OAU Matriculates 7,500 Students

The first day of September, 2016 remains a day to remember, especially for students of Obafemi Awolowo University, who are currently in their first year; the day saw them officially pronounced and made bonafide students of the institution by the authorities.

Yesterday, the matriculation ceremony of the fresh students held inside Amphi Theater, and it is the first since the appointment of Professor Anthony Elujoba as the Vice Chancellor last month. The ceremony started at about 10:00am with the procession led by the Acting Vice Chancellor, who was represented by the Chairman Committee of Deans, Professor Adeagbo Amusan.

While addressing the matriculated students, the Acting Vice Chancellor said they should count themselves lucky as 19,741 aspirants applied to be admitted and just 7,500 of them were offered the limited spaces. He further reminded them of the essence of their oath form and emphasized that the university management is against any form of vices, including examination malpractice, cultism and sexual harassment.

Lamenting the rate at which the institution is being shut down, the university number one said he would need the support of everyone so that the academic calendar can be brought back on track and at the same time reverse the bad image the school possesses.

He concluded his speech by praying for the matriculated students and used the same medium to inform them that their good welfare which has improved as evident in all halls of residence is still paramount to him.

Recall, the university had given a lecture-free day to the students in order to allow for their full participation in the event. This is the first in many years; before now, students are made to attend classes and/or laboratory on the same day when they are matriculated.
