University Of Ibadan Students Take To Twitter To Call For Vice Chancellor's Removal

Students of the University of Ibadan have since taken to the social media to agitate for the removal of the school’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Abel Olayinka. The students created a hashtag #Olayinkamustgo has been trending on Twitter since the early hours of Monday, 30th of May, 2016. The agitation was a response to the arrest of two past union leaders, Tokunbo Salako, and Babatunde Badmus, presumably on the orders of the VC.

Babatunde Badmus (BB) took to the official Facebook page of University of Ibadan students’ Union on Monday, May 30, to inform the public that he and Tokunbo Salako have been arrested and detained at Sango Police station, Ibadan, on the directive of the University of Ibadan’s Vice Chancellor.

In an interview with Tokunbo Salako, he narrated how the event unfolded to the SaharaReporters. “I was sitting at the Students Union Building (SUB) when the university’s Chief Security Officer (CSO) came with about 20 security men and asked what I was doing in the building and then ordered the security men to arrest me, but the security men were reasonable people and would not arrest me. When he (CSO) saw that his boys did not obey him, he then held me by my trousers; that was when I pushed the CSO back.

All of them (security men) then carried me to their office. We were outside when BB came. The VC then called the police to come and arrest me. BB followed me to Sango. Students’ union excos and other Students joined us at Sango police station while we were still writing statements. We were transferred to Iyaganku Police station but before then, the VC called the DPO of Sango police station that she should detain me and BB till tomorrow. The DPO told him that she would inform the commissioner of police. The Commissioner of Police then ordered that we be released immediately. The commissioner appealed for calm, and promised to address us tomorrow.” He narrated.

According to a special release by the Students Union government, a meeting had been scheduled to hold by 10 am on Monday, May 30th at the SUB where Tokunbo Salako was arrested. The leadership of the Students Union has called out to its members for a meeting again, tomorrow at SUB by 10 am. This, obviously, is in defiance to the school management’s decision to shut down the school.

The University of Ibadan has been shut down since April 26th, 2016 after a two-day protest against what the students perceived as unjust rustication of Tunji Epketi Micheal aka MOTE, a 500 level student of Petroleum Engineering.

On Thursday, November 19th, 2015, Mote had joined a protest led by the residents of Independence Hall in University of Ibadan. The residents of Independence Hall were reported to have protested about the lack of water and power in the hall. The protest led to the rustication of Mote for two semesters.

In a bid to resolve the issue and reopen the school, the management of the University of Ibadan called for a meeting between the university management and parents. This was also communicated through the VC’s Facebook page. The meeting has been scheduled for June, 7th 2016.

Tokunbo Salako and Babatunde Badmus are postgraduate students at the Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan. It is also worthy of mention that the post-graduate students are not affected by the school's closure hence, the two union leaders did nothing wrong being in the University premises.

Drama Unfolds As Olamide Answers Motherland's Beckon

The Afrika Amphitheatre was definitely the place to be on Monday, the 30th 2016, as popular indigenous musician; Adedeji Olamide, popularly known as Olamide Badoo visited the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife.

The show which hosted Olamide was organised by Motherland Beckons, an organisation which is said to reach out to Africans in Diaspora. However, the show had quite the dramatic touch as just before it began, a faction of Students caused a scene claiming that the ticket fees of the show was too expensive for a University community. It took the intervention of the security Unit of the University to salvage the situation even though the popular "Awo Boys" eventually had their way.

The show featured performances from a number of acts; Anu, the Lady Ekwe and Olo Omidan Bata who both thrilled the audience with their percussion skills and a number of other indigenous acts. Some upcoming OAU acts also graced the stage of the event.

However, when it was time for the star of the night to perform, the audience as expected went into an uncontrollable frenzy. Despite the efforts of the security officials on stage with the act, some persons were still untameable which eventually led to fights breaking out around the stage where the Abule Sowo crooner was performing. The fights left Olamide upset which led to his unexpected exit from the stage but this was not before he treated the audience to several of his hit songs. It is also worthy to note that this would not be the first time the YBNL Boss is visiting Obafemi Awolowo University and he made this clear when he obeyed popular"Dobale" tradition of the Institution.

We would hope following the turn out of events, this would not be his last visit to the Institution.

OAU Freshmen Commence Orientation Programme

Sequel to the resumption of the freshmen of the Obafemi Awolowo University, the orientation programme organised for the freshers by the Division of Students Affairs commenced on Monday, 31st May, 2016.
The fresh students who were firstly initiated into OAU proper with the recitation of the great Ife anthem were filled with ecstasy as they sang the anthem with enormous zeal. The programme then featured a welcoming address from the Vice Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Afolabi and an address from the Acting Dean of Student Affairs, Dr (Mrs) Durosinmi. The orientation programme also featured some other notable speakers who spoke on various topics affecting the undergraduate.

However, the programme which is slated to hold for a week would continue till the freshers begin their ICT training. Meanwhile, some Faculties have commenced their registration processes even as a number of Freshmen still remain unable to secure bedspaces.

Europa League Final 2016: St. Jakob-Park Debacle

As Jonas Eriksson blew his whistle to signal the end of the second 45minutes in St. Jakob-Park Basel, Switzerland, a quarter of the 38,512 spectators erupted to celebrate the victory of the three times Europa league winner - Sevilla.  Tears trickled down the cheeks of some Liverpool players who had anticipated to go into the history book at Anfield after 'hitting the post' in their second finals of the season.  For Liverpool, It was a tough showdown with the Liga Copa del Rey runner-up; a match officiated by a refereeing crew which after a drug test admitted to puffing hallucinogenic drugs.

Jonas Eriksson reportedly told UEFA doping officials he inhaled about “one gram of K2" before kickoff. Though the English side enjoyed a quick-witted first 45 minutes where blatantly palpable - egregious - fouls were not called as the officials who were patently under the influence of the narcotic changed the rules of the game allowing the match see four very obvious hand balls not counted.  An instance of such was the Daniel Sturridge perfectly weighted pass that Grzegorz Krychowiak reached down and batted away.  Jonas Eriksson said "I SAW A THOUSAND LIFETIMES IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE", "I TALKED TO GOD, I AM MY OWN FATHER".

The final whistle in Basel saw Sevilla clinched the trophy the third consecutive time.  After successfully turning UEFA Champions League final into a Liga Madrid derby, Real Madrid trumped their city rival to lift their 11th UCL title.

The dominance of the Spanish league is now like the luminescence of the moon which can't be shielded. As the English teams struggle to clamber up the league of top clubs in Europe, The Spanish teams had climbed to the top taking part in all competitions across the continent.  This is the third time Spanish teams would be clearing the tables leaving nothing left for others to compensate their travels.

When Liverpool football club arrived Merseyside, there were no open roof buses to convey them; their defeat to the Copa del Rey runner-up is the fifth consecutive final their newly appointed manager, Jurgen Kloop would lose.

While it continue to look as if the city of Liverpool is alone in their mishap, or as if Jurgen Kloop tribulation had just continued, I see the country that presently inhabit the duo to have added to its adversity and might strictly be affected by the loss in the long run.  One tenable repercussion had been the non-participation of more than four English teams in Europe most elite competition whereas the Spanish empire have been having five representatives over the last 2 years.

The failure of Liverpool squad to replicate the night at Istanbul; Jurgen Kloop's unlucky kismet with finals; Jonas Eriksson misinterpreted vision and St. Jakob-Park debacle all accumulated to add salt to English football's injury.

Before You Release Your Release...- Pope Jay

Before anything, I would firstly want to welcome the fresh students of the great Ife to campus. I would hope that you come to terms with the fact that you are “bloody freshers” soon enough, for any true process of education begins with an acceptance of ignorance. I wish you prosperous days in the Obafemi Awolowo University and a success in your academic pursuit.

One thing I have come to learn and perhaps love about the great Ife is her spirit of activism. You would rarely find a student or staff who does not have a pinch of activism in him/her. Even the artisans and traders who have only come to make a living on the grounds of OAU cannot be exempted; this is perhaps why cases of the popular “Town gboro” going on strikes would not sound totally strange. A consequence of this spirit of “alutaism” is a corresponding high number of releases on campus. By releases, I do not refer to the ecstatic discharge that is often sequel to the pleasurable act of coitus and I am not sure I would author any article on such profane philistinism any time soon. “Releases” in the context of this topic simply refers to different forms of writing; most especially the kinds we read on our campus.

The rate at which the quality of these releases are declining are quite saddening. These days, the only things we get to read are slandering headlines and long epistles of libel and the only times when we get to read some worthy ideas and informative process, one might end up with an headache from the alarming use of English in such articles. I have and still read a number of commentary articles and by some OAU lecturers on several topics; Barr. Sola Adegbite of the Faculty of Law, Professor Remi Sonaiya of the Faculty of Arts, Pharm ‘Lakunle Jaiyesimi and Professor Adebayo Lamikanra and some others. I believe the works of these ones and many others even beyond OAU should set a standard for the upcoming writers. Very many times, I marvel at some of the pieces of Professor Lamikanra, he is the kind of author that would insult you in a way that makes you want to be insulted because eventually, you might not understand the insult but understand the joke (and sometimes vice versa).

In conclusion, I would advise that authors on campus, especially the ones who claim to be activists of the pen and even other writers be cautious of the kind of releases they make.There is always the need for proof reading and editing. We all should strive to improve ourselves both grammatically and in the ideals our write-ups represent. In summary, before you release your release please ensure it is worthy of release.

Full Text Of President Buhari’s Anniversary Speech

My compatriots,

It is one year today since our administration came into office. It has been a year of triumph, consolidation, pains and achievements. By age, instinct and experience, my preference is to look forward, to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead and rededicate the administration to the task of fixing Nigeria. But I believe we can also learn from the obstacles we have overcome and the progress we made thus far, to help strengthen the plans that we have in place to put Nigeria back on the path of progress.

We affirm our belief in democracy as the form of government that best assures the active participation and actual benefit of the people. Despite the many years of hardship and disappointment the people of this nation have proved inherently good, industrious tolerant, patient and generous.

The past years have witnessed huge flows of oil revenues. From 2010 average oil prices were $100 per barrel. But economic and security conditions were deteriorating. We campaigned and won the election on the platform of restoring security, tackling corruption and restructuring the economy. On our arrival, the oil price had collapsed to as low as $30 per barrel and we found nothing had been kept for the rainy day. Oil prices have been declining since 2014 but due to the neglect of the past, the country was not equipped to halt the economy from declining.

The infrastructure, notably rail, power, roads were in a decrepit state. All the four refineries were in a state of disrepair, the pipelines and depots neglected.

Huge debts owed to contractors and suppliers had accumulated. Twenty-seven states could not pay salaries for months. In the north-east, Boko Haram had captured 14 local governments, driven the local authorities out, hoisted their flags. Elsewhere, insecurity was palpable; corruption and impunity were the order of the day. In short, we inherited a state near collapse.

On the economic front, all oil dependent countries, Nigeria included, have been struggling since the drop in prices. Many oil rich states have had to take tough decisions similar to what we are doing. The world, Nigeria included has been dealing with the effects of three significant and simultaneous global shocks starting in 2014:

A 70% drop in oil prices.
Global growth slowdown.
Normalization of monetary policy by the United States federal reserve.

Our problems as a government are like that of a farmer who in a good season harvests ten bags of produce. The proceeds enable him to get by for rest of the year. However, this year he could only manage 3 bags from his farm. He must now think of other ways to make ends meet.

From day one, we purposely set out to correct our condition, to change Nigeria. We reinforced and galvanized our armed forces with new leadership and resources. We marshaled our neighbours in a joint task force to tackle and defeat Boko Haram. By the end of December 2015, all but pockets and remnants had been routed by our gallant armed forces. Our immediate focus is for a gradual and safe return of internally displaced persons in safety and dignity and for the resumption of normalcy in the lives of people living in these areas.

EFCC was given the freedom to pursue corrupt officials and the judiciary was alerted on what Nigerians expect of them in the fight against corruption. On the economy, in particular foreign exchange and fuel shortages, our plan is to save foreign exchange by fast tracking repair of the refineries and producing most of our fuel requirements at home. And by growing more food in Nigeria, mainly rice, wheat and sugar we will save billions of dollars in foreign exchange and drastically reduce our food import bill.

We resolved to keep the Naira steady, as in the past, devaluation had done dreadful harm to the Nigerian economy.

Furthermore, I supported the monetary authority’s decision to ensure alignment between monetary policy and fiscal policy. We shall keep a close look on how the recent measures affect the Naira and the economy. But we cannot get away from the fact that a strong currency is predicated on a strong economy. And a strong economy pre-supposes an industrial productive base and a steady export market. The measures we must take, may lead to hardships. The problems Nigerians have faced over the last year have been many and varied. But the real challenge for this government has been reconstructing the spine of the Nigerian state. The last twelve months have been spent collaborating with all arms of government to revive our institutions so that they are more efficient and fit for purpose:

That means a bureaucracy better able to develop and deliver policy
That means an independent judiciary, above suspicion and able to defend citizen’s rights and dispense justice equitably.
That means a legislature that actually legislates effectively and
Above all; that means political parties and politicians committed to serving the Nigerian people rather than themselves.
These are the pillars of the state on which democracy can take root and thrive. But only if they are strong and incorruptible. Accordingly, we are working very hard to introduce some vital structural reforms in the way we conduct government business and lay a solid foundation on which we can build enduring change.

An important first step has been to get our housekeeping right. So we have reduced the extravagant spending of the past. We started boldly with the treasury single account, stopping the leakages in public expenditure.

We then identified forty-three thousand ghost workers through the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information system. That represents pay packets totalling N4.2 billion stolen every month.  In addition, we will save Twenty-Three Billion  Naira per annum from official travelling and sitting allowances alone.

Furthermore, the efficiency unit will cut costs and eliminate duplications in ministries and departments. Every little saving helps. The reduction in the number of ministries and work on restructuring and rationalization of the MDAs is well underway. When this work is complete we will have a leaner, more efficient public service that is fit for the purpose of changing nigeria for the good and for good.

As well as making savings, we have changed the way public money is spent. In all my years as a public servant, I have never come across the practice of padding budgets. I am glad to tell you now we not only have a budget, but more importantly, we have a budget process that is more transparent, more inclusive and more closely tied to our development priorities than in the recent past. 30% of the expenditure in this budget is devoted to capital items. Furthermore, we are projecting non-oil revenues to surpass proceeds from oil. Some critics have described the budget exercise as clumsy. Perhaps. But it was an example of consensus building, which is integral to democratic government. In the end we resolved our differences.

We have, therefore, delivered significant milestones on security, corruption and the economy. In respect of the economy, I would like to directly address you on the very painful but inevitable decisions we had to make in the last few weeks specifically on the pump price of fuel and the more flexible exchange rate policy announced by the central bank. It is even more painful for me that a major producer of crude oil with four refineries that once exported refined products is today having to import all of its domestic needs. This is what corruption and mismanagement has done to us and that is why we must fight these ills.

As part of the foundation of the new economy we have had to reform how fuel prices had traditionally been fixed. This step was taken only after protracted consideration of its pros and cons. After comprehensive investigation my advisers and I concluded that the mechanism was unsustainable.

We are also engaged in making recoveries of stolen assets some of which are in different jurisdictions. The processes of recovery can be tedious and time consuming, but today I can confirm that thus far: significant amount of assets have been recovered. A considerable portion of these are at different stages of recovery. Full details of the status and categories of the assets will now be published by the Ministry of Information and updated periodically. When forfeiture formalities are completed these monies will be credited to the treasury and be openly and transparently used in funding developmental projects and the public will be informed.

On the Niger Delta, we are committed to implementing the United Nations Environment Programme report and are advancing clean-up operations. I believe the way forward is to take a sustainable approach to address the issues that affect the delta communities. Re-engineering the amnesty programmes is an example of this. The recent spate of attacks by militants disrupting oil and power installations will not distract us from engaging leaders in the region in addressing Niger Delta problems. If the militants and vandals are testing our resolve, they are much mistaken. We shall apprehend the perpetrators and their sponsors and bring them to justice.

The policy measures and actions taken so far are not to be seen as some experiment in governance. We are fully aware that those vested interests who have held Nigeria back for so long will not give up without a fight. They will sow divisions, sponsor vile press criticisms at home and abroad, incite the public in an effort to create chaos rather than relinquish the vice-like grip they have held on Nigeria.

The economic misfortune we are experiencing in the shape of very low oil prices has provided us with an opportunity to restructure our economy and diversify. We are in the process of promoting agriculture, livestocks, exploiting our solid mineral resources and expanding our industrial and manufacturing base. That way, we will import less and make the social investments necessary to allow us to produce a large and skilled workforce.

Central Bank of Nigeria will offer more fiscal incentives for business that prove capable of manufacturing products that are internationally competitive. We remain committed to reforming the regulatory framework, for investors by improving the ease of doing business in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the first steps along the path of self-sufficiency in rice, wheat and sugar – big users of our scarce foreign exchange – have been taken. The Labour Intensive Farming Enterprise  will boost the economy and ensure inclusive growth in long neglected communities. Special intervention funds through the Bank of Agriculture will provide targeted support. Concerns remain about rising cost of foods such as maize, rice, millet, beans and gari. Farmers tell me that they are worried about the cost of fertilizers, pesticides and the absence of extension services. The federal and state governments are on the same page in tackling these hurdles in our efforts at increased food production and ultimately food security.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the increasing role that our women are playing in revitalizing the agricultural sector. Modern farming is still hard and heavy work and I salute our Nigerian women in sharing this burden. In this respect I am very pleased to announce that the government will shortly be launching the national women’s empowerment fund, which I have approved to provide N1.6 billion in micro-finance loans to women across the nation to assist in rehabilitating the economies of rural communities, particularly those impacted by the insurgency and conflict.

With respect to solid minerals, the minister has produced a roadmap where we will work closely with the world bank and major international investors to ensure through best practices and due diligence that we choose the right partners. Illegal mining remains a problem and we have set up a special security team to protect our assets. Special measures will be in place to protect miners in their work environment.

For too long, ours has been a society that neglects the poor and victimizes the weak. A society that promotes profit and growth over development and freedom. A society that fails to recognize that, to quote the distinguished economist Amartya Sen “ poverty is not just lack of money. It is not having the capability to realize one’s full potential as a human being.”

So, today, I am happy to formally  launch, by far the most ambitious social protection programme in our history. A programme that both seeks to start the process of lifting many from poverty, while at the same time creating the opportunity for people to fend for themselves. In this regard, Five Hundred Billion Naira has been appropriated in the 2016 budget for social intervention programmes in five key areas. We are committed to providing job creation opportunities for five hundred thousand teachers and one hundred thousand artisans across the nation. 5.5 million children are to be provided with nutritious meals through our school feeding programme to improve learning outcomes, as well as enrolment and completion rates. The conditional cash transfer scheme will provide financial support for up to one million vulnerable beneficiaries, and complement the enterprise programme – which will target up to one million market women; four hundred and sixty thousand artisans; and two hundred thousand agricultural workers, nationwide. Finally, through the education grant scheme, we will encourage students studying sciences, technology, engineering and maths, and lay a foundation for human capital development for the next generation.

I would like to pay a special tribute to our gallant men and women of the armed forces who are in harm’s way so that the rest of us can live and go about our business in safety. Their work is almost done. The nation owes them a debt of gratitude.

Abroad, we want to assure our neighbours, friends and development partners that Nigeria is firmly committed to democratic principles. We are ready partners in combating terrorism, cyber crimes, control of communicable diseases and protection of the environment. Following on the Paris Agreement, COP 21, we are fully committed to halting and reversing desertification. Elsewhere, we will intensify efforts to tackle erosion, ocean surge, flooding and oil spillage which I referred to earlier by implementing the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report.

We are grateful to the international community notably France, the US, UK and China for their quick response in helping to tackle the recent Ebola outbreak in our sub-region. We also acknowledge the humanity shown by the Italian and German governments in the treatment of boat people, many fleeing from our sub-region because of lack of economic opportunity. We thank all our partners especially several countries in the EU.

We appreciate the valuable work that the UN agencies, particularly UNICEF, ICRC, the World Food Program have been doing. We must also appreciate the World Bank, the Gates Foundation, the Global Fund and Educate A Child of Qatar for the excellent work in our health, education and other sectors.

Fellow citizens let me end on a happy note. To the delight of all, two of the abducted Chibok girls have regained their freedom. During the last one year, not a single day passed without my agonizing about these girls. Our efforts have centred around negotiations to free them safely from their mindless captors. We are still pursuing that course. Their safety is of paramount concern to me and I am sure to most Nigerians. I am very worried about the conditions those still captured might be in. Today I re-affirm our commitment to rescuing our girls. We will never stop until we bring them home safely. As I said before, no girl should be put through the brutality of forced marriage and every Nigerian girl has the right to an education and a life choice.

I thank you and appeal to you to continue supporting the government’s efforts to fix Nigeria.

The popular OAU student blogger and member of the Association of Campus Journalist, OAU, Mr Lukmon Fasasi has become the first President of the National Association of Nigerian Campus Editors. The association which had its first elections at its recently concluded national Convention comprises of Student Journalists and editors nationwide wide.

The Association had been under the leadership of a Caretaker committee with Mr Olanrewaju Oyedeji being the chairman of this committee. In his handover speech, Mr Oyedeji beseeched the newly elected Executives to further strive for the growth of the body and ensure it continues to remain immune to external political influence.
However, Mr Fasasi was not the only OAU student to be elected to the NANCE executive council has Mr Omole Isaac, popularly referred to as O'zik, Mr Oyetunji Ridwan, Publications Manager of OAU Peeps News Agency, and Mr Okeowo Olasunkanmi also won the seats of Public Relations Officer, Secretary General and Treasurer respectively.

Ife Shuttle Bus Drivers (Town-Igboro) Release New Bus Fare Scheme

The shuttle bus drivers in Ile-Ife town on Friday 27th May, 2016 released new bus fares scheme. The new fares, which is a slight increase to the current fares, has become effective with immediate effect. It would be recalled that the shuttle bus drivers in Ife on Friday 27th May, 2016 withdrew their services throughout the town for a whole day in order to meet and discuss the new fare structure. The upward review of fares has been attributed to the recent increase in the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and Diesel.

Following controversies that the popular music star, Adedeji Olamide, popularly known as Olamide Badoo, would be performing at the Amphitheatre, OAU, the Abule sowo crooner has taken to his instagram page to confirm his presence at the event. The event which is tagged; “Olamide Live In Ife” is said to hold in the Amphitheatre, OAU on Monday, 30th May, 2016 with Regular tickets selling for N500, VIP for N5000, Table for 4 for N35,000 and Table for 10 selling for N75,000.

However, most stale students have expressed their disappointments as they would not be able attend the show considering the fact that the stalites of the hosting institution are yet to resume.

NANCE Convention Kicks Off Today

The first ever Convention of the National Association of Nigerian Campus Editors would kick off today, 27th May, 2016 at the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Kwara State.

The Association which was birthed in the year 2015 to further help foster quality Campus Journalism in Various campuses nationwide have been under the leadership of Olanrewaju Oyedeji, who has served as its acting Chairman since conception. However, one of the major programmes of the convention is its first general elections in which some Campus Journalists of the Obafemi Awolowo University are contesting.

A number of distinguished persons and veteran Journalists are also expected to be present at the convention; Mr Dele Momodu, Sam Omatseye, Governor Ahmed Abdul Fatai amongst others.

OAU Wins Yusuff Ali Moot And Mock Competition

The Faculty of Law of the  University of Ilorin was defeated by the Faculty of  Law of the Obafemi Awolowo University yesterday, Wednesday 25th of  may, in the finals of  the Yusuff  Alli Moot and Mock competition that held at the University of Ilorin

The Faculty of Law, OAU, were said to have dazed and dazzled the audience and other competing Universities by the forensic eloquence coupled with a top-notch knowledge of moot and mock trial displayed by Ehimosan Olukolade and Otuyiga Olasunkanmi of Team OAU during the mock trial.

Obafemi Awolowo University evicted Lagos State University at the moot which qualified them for the mock trial.

The climax of the mock trial was when the Judges stood up to give standing ovation for both counsels representing Obafemi Awolowo University while giving their final addresses.

Other students in team OAU are  Adeniyi Ayomiposi and Akindolire David who represented TeamOAU  in the debate and Tijani Taofeek and Agboola Elijah. 

When asked, one of the students that represented the Obafemi Awolowo University in the Moot and Mock trial, Otuyiga  ‘Sunkanmi, how he felt about team OAU’s feat and he had this to say;

“Hmm, I feel good! … It was my debut moot and also my first mock experience… Its  an awesome feeling to have won my first moot and mock competition”.

The Portuguese left home at 2.50pm on Thursday and concluded talks at a central London hotel, agreeing to succeed Louis van Gaal as the new boss at Old Trafford.

Sky Sports News HQ broke the news at 5.20pm after Mourinho returned home half an hour earlier with documents in his hand and a bottle of red wine, having met with United's executive vice chairman Ed Woodward to complete the deal.

Full Text Of Buhari's Children Day Message

I heartily greet and felicitate with all Nigerian children on the occasion of this year’s Children’s Day celebration.
I seize the opportunity of this year’s celebration which comes just two days before the first anniversary of the present Administration, to reassure our children and youth that we remain fully committed to fulfilling our promise of a better Nigeria for all of our people.

On this happy occasion for our children, I reaffirm my belief that it is the right of every Nigerian child to have access to quality and affordable education, as well as healthcare and other basic necessities for a good life, in a peaceful and secure environment.
The good health and well-being of Nigerian children remain a top priority on our agenda for national development and we have demonstrated our strong commitment in this regard with the allocation of N12.6 billion in the 2016 budget for vaccines and programmes to prevent childhood killer diseases such as polio, measles and yellow fever.

Other measures in the 2016 budget, such as the school feeding programme for children at a cost of N93.1 billion, will ensure that more children go to school and enjoy the fun of learning and growing together with their peers.

Despite the current economic and funding challenges facing our dear nation, my administration will continue to do all within its powers to achieve better living conditions and greater access to quality healthcare and education for all our youth.
It is a thing of joy that on this year’s Children’s Day, we can also celebrate the safe return of one of the Chibok girls, Amina Ali Nkeki and many other abducted women and children who have been freed from the clutches of Boko Haram by our gallant troops.

I assure all Nigerians and friends of the country, once again, that my administration will not rest on its oars until the ungodly terrorist sect is totally eliminated from our country.

As peace gradually returns to the insurgency-ravaged North-Eastern States, the Federal Government will continue to work diligently to ensure the rapid and full reintegration and rehabilitation of all internally displaced persons, including orphaned children in the region.

We will also sustain and strengthen ongoing actions to protect children more effectively from violence, child-labour, child-trafficking, forced marriages and other related offences.

In return, I urge you all to imbibe and exhibit in greater measure, the virtues of hard work, diligence, discipline, honesty, prudence, selflessness and patriotism which are essential for the actualisation of our vision of a truly great nation.
The world now looks up to our dear nation, Nigeria as an exemplary model of democratic ideals after the smooth transition that brought our Administration to power.
You, our children and youth have a very significant role to play in ensuring that our democratic institutions of governance are continuously nurtured, improved and strengthened to underpin national development and prosperity.

Despite the indefinite suspension of the Students Union of the Obafemi Awolowo University, some renovation work have been observed in her Students Union building. The building which houses the office of the President of the Union, the Security Room, some other important offices and business establishments was noticed to wear a new look as most walls around the building had been repainted and some floors on the inside tiled. There are speculations that the renovation was done by the Division of Students Affairs in preparation to Usher in a new administration for the Union. However, efforts to reach the Dean and Vice Dean of Students Affairs proved abortive as their offices remain clogged by complainants having issues with bedspace allocation.

We would hope the speculations come out true as the Students community continue to remain improperly represented without an umbrella body.

FG Declares Monday Public Holiday

The Federal Government has declared Monday, May 30, 2016 as a public holiday to celebrate the 2016 Democracy Day.

Making the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, the Minister of Interior, Lt Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd), assured Nigerians that with the signing into law of the 2016 Appropriation Act, the country would witness a “New Deal” with its full implementation, especially of the Social Intervention Programmes aimed at improving the living conditions of the populace.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Bassey Akpanyung, he minister was quoted as saying, “Dambazau congratulates Nigerians on the attainment of one year in office of President Muhammadu Buhari and enjoined all to continue to support the President in his sustained effort in building a peaceful, enduring and democratic legacy.

“The minister wishes all Nigerians a happy Democracy Day celebration.”

"OAU VC Makes Personal Phone Number Available To All Students"- SLAN

Student Leaders’ Alliance of Nigeria (SLAN) has passed a vote of confidence on Prof Bamitale Omole, outgoing Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The group, which comprised former students’ union leaders, condemned the recent attacks on the VC, saying the people behind them knew nothing about university administration.

In a statement by SLAN’s international coordinator Oluwaloseyi Babaeko, the group said Omole deserved commendation for improving the academic standard of the university, which global rating increased under his leadership.

Babaeko, a masters student at the School of Politics and International Studies at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, said: “The call for the arrest and probe of Prof Omole shows desperation for vendetta among the faceless people, who do not like developments brought about by the outgoing VC. Their argument is not only shallow; it is laughable, baseless and lacks merit.”

He continued: “The propaganda against Prof Omole shows that the faceless people have no knowledge of history. Rather, Prof Omole deserves our respect and prayers. The misguided elements want to disparage and destroy the hard-earned reputation of Prof Omole through their parochial agenda. We condemn such act in its entirety.”
Babaeko said the VC runs an open-door policy and makes his personal phone number available to all students.

“For those of us who have been following and monitoring the activities of the VC, we are pleased to say it anywhere that Prof Omole has done well in administering OAU, despite the time frame. We plead with the VC to forgive those wicked individuals who want to rubbish his name. Prof Omole should act like a father,” he said.

SLAN also called for improved funding for the university, saying OAU needed resources to maintain its academic standard it appealed to the VC to reinstate all suspended students’ leaders.

Falz, Simi Others To Storm Ife This Weekend

Following the postponement of the Ife Fiesta, the organizers of the programme seem to have re-arranged and repackaged the Fiesta to give all VIPs and attendees the best of what Ile-Ife has to offer. DSA Releases Registration/Renewal Requirements For Campus Associations

The Division of Students Affairs has released the list of requirements for registration/renewal of associations/clubs/societies/fellowships on campus.

The official release;

DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS
OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY, ILEIFE, NIGERIA.

REQUIREMENTS FOR REGISTRATION/RENEWAL OF REGISTRATION OF CLUBS/SOCIETIES ASSOCIATIONS/ FELLOWSHIP GROUPS 2015/2016 SESSION

1) Typewritten application to be addressed to the Dean, Division of Students Affairs preferably on Letter headed paper of the association.
2) A copy of the constitution of the Association/bye laws including the objectives of the society relevant to its operation on campus is to be attached (CLEAN COPY PLEASE).

(3) List of executive members, typed separately, indicating their NAMES, DEPARTMENTS, FACULTIES, REG NUMBERS, PARTS, POSITION HELD, SEX AND RESIDENTIAL ADDRESS ON CAMPUS OR OFF CAMPUS AND TELEPHONE NUMBERS are also to e forwarded. The list must take cognizance of spread amongst years of study. This is to allow for continuity and sustainability.

(4) List of membership i.e all members of the association (indicating their NAMES, DEPARTMENTS, FACULTIES, REG NUMBERS, PARTS, POSITION HELD, SEX AND RESIDENTIAL ADDRESS ON CAMPUS OR OFF CAMPUS AND TELEPHONE NUMBERS.

(5) Letters (NOT on Association letter-headed paper) from TWO Senior Staff Adviser including their Phone No. & email address, duly signed, indicating their willingness to serve (OR) to continue to serve in the caseof renewal of registration at the beginning of each section. The Staff advisers should be responsible for the conduct of members of the club/societies for the appropriate session.

(6) A photocopy of the last letter of Renewal with the Division of Students’ Affairs should be attached

(7) Registration/Renewal of Faculty/Department Association shall be subject to recommendation from the Dean of Faculty/Head of Department as appropriate. Similar, Religious Association shall be subject to recommendation from the appropriate Religious Body on Campus or within the Country.

(8) Any Club/Societies/Associations/Fellowships Group that pastes its poster in unauthorized places other than Notice boards will have itself to blame as it stands the risk of forfeiting its chance for registration/renewal.

(9) It should be noted that application for renewal of registration of Clubs/Societies/Associations/Fellowship Groups at the beginning of every session should be accompanied with Audited Account, indicating income expenditure and balance, duly signed by TWO members of the executive including Treasurer/Financial Secretary and approved by the chairman, Audit Commitee of the Association with Date. The Audit Report MUST be counter signed  by the advisers and/or Head of Departments.

(10) A copy of the minutes of meeting where the decision was taken to audit the Association’s account passed as correct auditing should be attached to the application.

(11) Please be informed that a notice of at least; One Month be given for any programme that will bring outsiders into the University, and permission would be withheld from any Club/Society/Association/Fellowships that fails to meet this condition. Also copy of the letter of acceptance from the person invited for your programme should  be attached with your application to hold a programme.

Accommodation Clearance Deadline Released

This is to inform all freshmen and final year students who were successful in securing an accommodation that the deadline for the bedspace payment & clearance has been set by the Division of Students Affairs.

As stated in the allocation letter, after payment, you to print 3 copies of the letter of allocation and sign as an indication of your acceptance and take them to the warden for room allocation.
Failure to comply with this directive on or before June 7, 2016 implies you do not accept the offer and the space will be declared vacant and will be re-allocated to interested students. Keep a copy of the signed form, leave a copy with the warden and submit the last copy to Division of students Affairs.

Prophet T.B. Joshua Speaks On Food Scarcity: "You Have Not Seen Anything Yet”

On Sunday May 22, 2016, T.B. Joshua of the Synagogue Church Of All Nations (SCOAN), made some shocking revelations on his Emmanuel TV station concerning Nigeria and the world at large. The ‘prophet’ spoke on many issues including the recent EgyptAir crash, African politics and agriculture, even warning of a terrorist attack in the United Kingdom.

He read out a transcript of the prophecies he had given during his New Year’s Crossover Service, highlighting particularly the national food scarcity. On each point read, he expanded further, detailing what Nigeria and Africa are to expect in the nearest future.

FOOD SCARCITY
“There will be large scale scarcity, shortage of food. As a state, country, continent, we have to go back to the farm to arrest, to alleviate the forthcoming situation”, he read.

Further expanding on the details of the prophecy, he said, “It is only a ‘shortage’ that you are experiencing now; you have not experienced ‘large scale'.”

Giving further insight, he proclaimed, “This one that I am saying now, ‘scarcity’, ‘large scale’, it's a proverb. Whatever you can do from now till December - all of your money you will use to buy food - you will not have enough to buy.”

Advising those in the real-estate business he said,

“If you are the type planning to build a house now, stop it for the mean time. If you are in the business of buying land, stop it for the mean time - look for another business. Stop it for the mean time until February next year. Use that money on the need of people now.”

Giving a sombre warning, he said, “I'm preparing you. Get ready; lager scale scarcity is coming!”

In the last few days, Nigerians have woken up to the stark reality of the rising food scarcity. Several reports were released on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday detailing the extent of the current national food woes. Tomato ebola, violence from fulani herdsmen, missed harvests and rising transportation costs have all been attributed as the cause of the food shortage and spiralling food prices.

On the rise of "tomato ebola", Kaduna state agriculture commissioner, Manzo Daniel, said:

"This is only the beginning of a disaster if we don’t take drastic measures because the disease is fast spreading across the north.”

NIGERIA'S ECONOMY
On the economic plight Nigerians are facing, Joshua read from his beginning of year prophecies:

“The president will do everything to reject devaluation of the naira – which is a good idea from a good leader. But there will be overwhelming pressure which he will not be able to resist. Nigeria, we are in a valley. The future is crying for help.”

Expanding on the ‘valley’, Joshua said:

“I explained that we are in a valley but it is not the valley of the shadow of death. There is no snake or scorpion, it's different. When you are in the valley you will cry and cry but you will still get out of the valley.

“You have to continue to cut your coat according to your size. Don't just continue to spend your money on something that won't be able to help you. Spend your money on something that the whole world will be looking for - food, shelter.”

AFRICAN POLITICS
Moving on the political climate in Africa, Joshua noted:

“African leaders should quickly arrest the political situation. 50% of counties that do elections, at least 45% of them will face crisis. More African countries will be under siege by terrorists because of pros and cons in choosing leaders. Mishandling of electoral processes will create a conducive atmosphere for terrorists.”

UK TERROR WARNING
Joshua also claimed to have seen an attack in the United Kingdom. He said:

“Pray for the United Kingdom like the railways, people, and crowds where people gather because I'm seeing some funny people in their country. But I am seeing with prayer and proper security it will be avoided but there will be a sign or trace that this happened but it will not happen the way that it was supposed to have happened but they will know that something happened there.”

The day following Joshua's warning, 27 schools had to close nationwide in the UK due to a bomb scare. Apparently, anonymous repeated calls were made to each school, warning of explosive devices. The callers told the receptionists that "if the school called the police the bomb would be detonated immediately". The threats continued on Tuesday with more schools being evacuated.

ANOTHER PLANE INCIDENT
On the Egypt Air crash, Joshua said:

“Egypt has happened and the other one I am seeing is very close and I am going to say the country and the place. This one that I am seeing now is bigger than the one that happened. This one is very close now.

Every airport security must be tight. You should be careful who you employ to fly as a pilot or flight attendant because they too will apply for this kind of job and they will be patient enough; if it is one or two years they will be patient until the achieve their goal.”

The cleric dishes out national and international predictions on a regular basis, using the platform of his Sunday services, broadcast live on his Emmanuel TV.

While some embrace his prophecies, upholding him as an end-time prophet, others are highly sceptical. Despite mixed reactions to his prophecies and purported miracles, Joshua has a huge following worldwide, with his YouTube Channel having over 350,000 subscribers and 2.2million following him on Facebook.

Breaking News: Wabba Led NLC Suspends Strike

The Ayuba Wabba faction of the Nigeria Labour Congress has suspended an industrial action called to resist the new price of petrol.

The leader of the union announced the suspension on Sunday.

It came after an emergency meeting of its organs – the National Working Committee and the National Executive Committee.

At the meeting, talks were focused on the strike and the way forward.

Pump price of petrol was increase from 86.50 Naira to 145 Naira by the Federal Government on May 11.

The 67.6 per cent increase had angered the labour union, with the union saying it was insensitive.

Ponmile Pelumi, a student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ileife has once again proved the uniqueness of some certain people in their fields. Pelumi, a student in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts created an oil on canvas painting of a view in the Adekunle Fajuyi Hall of residence.

The painting which he shared on his social media platforms have since then gone viral in the online community of the University with many not even believing that the painting is not a photograph.

Commenting on the picture, Mr Damilola said; "The painting just looks so real and detailed, it captures everything; from the light bulbs in the hall to the ever studious nature of the Students of OAU". However, in an exclusive chat with OAUpeeps on the inspiration for the Painting, Mr Pelumi said;
"One major thing is the architecture...the strong building. Also, the way students move from their different rooms to the water point to fetch water irrespective of their class, wealthy family or poor, all just have to get their buckets and fetch. Also there's no boss anyway, all just have to queue to get water.
Also, the water point is where students meet and discuss. Reading of articles or posters too is not left out, being pasted at the water point; Sug stuff, Religious stuffs, Buying of "fufu", megabytes "data for sale", phone for sale. A lot happens at the water point.
Despite the fact that water hardly runs in the blocks. The wise students get up early or late in the evening to fetch water. If they don't, they have no option than to get pure water but we all know thats for the rich.  Others have got to go to classes without taking their bath. The water point is my center of Focus.  The school management should help restore all the spoilt water pipes and tanks in different hostels. 
The bright light bulbs in the buildings are just my own personal input, most are damaged. In the 70s I guess Electricity was constant and available. It's a way of passing out a message that we need constant Electricity."

OAU Freshmen Still Unable To Secure Accommodation As Resumption Approaches

A good number of the Freshmen of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife, still remain unable to secure Accommodation despite resumption being less than a week away. It would worthy to note that the initial activation for accommodation request for the Freshmen was done on the 24th of April, 2016. However, the accommodation especially for female freshers was allegedly said to have been deactivated less than 48 hours after, with the accommodation request access for the male students lasting a few days more.
  Again, the University announced the reactivation of the portal for the Freshmen to secure Accommodation on the 20th of May, 2016 giving most the young abecedarians some hope. However, claims have risen that the said activation barely lasted for more than fifteen (15) minutes as majority of these students remained Unable to secure bedspaces after the said activation and there are also some other claims that the portal was only activated for some departments.

It should also be recalled that the Division of Students Affair had earlier made a release indicating that there were about 9,500 bedspaces for 7,500 freshers and perhaps more finalists (ignoring other classes of students entitled to accommodation). This is perhaps why the freshers are experiencing these serious problems. We hope the University Management through the Division of Students Affairs is able to manage the situation soon enough as a high number of these Freshmen remain without accommodation as their Resumption fast approaches.

76 OAU Workers To Be Sacked By The FG

No fewer than 106 workers of University Staff schools in the country have been allegedly sacked by the Federal Government.

Another 76 members from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, Osun State were also said to be on the waiting list for disengagement.

This was disclosed yesterday at the SSANU’s ongoing NEC meeting at the Michael Imoudu National Institute for a labour Studies, MINILS, Ilorin, Kwara State.

The Deputy President of SSANU, Comrade Moses Adeniyi-Aogo, who represented the President of the association, Comrade Samson Ugwoke said that the staff of university staff school at the OAU may be given the way out next month by the Federal Government.

Damaged Bus After Accident

Four students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, died in a road accident on the Akure-Ilesha expressway in Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State on Saturday.

The spokesman of the Police Command in Ondo State, Mr Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident and said that 11 others sustained various degrees of injuries.

The students were returning from Ibadan after attending a religious programme.

Joseph further confirmed that the remains of the students were deposited at the Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Akure, where those injured were hospitalised.

No fewer than 15 students were in the Hiace bus when the accident happened.
The police spokesman said that preliminary investigation had revealed that the accident involved a Hiace bus carrying the students and a motorcycle.

“The accident happened when the bus’ driver lost control while trying to avoid the motorcycle that suddenly appeared on the highway.

“The bus somersaulted several times after trying to manoeuvre its way,’’ Joseph said.

He said policemen and marshals of the Federal Road Safety Commission were at the scene to assist the deceased and those injured.

Mr Segun Oladele, President of the FUTA chapter of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), who also confirmed the deaths, said that those injured were responding to treatment.

Fresher's Accommodation Request Reactivated

Following the inability of many Freshmen to obtain Accommodation on campus, the Portal has been reactivated today, 20th May, 2016 for further request by the freshmen. However, as at the time of compiling this report, some female students are still unable to secure bedspaces. We hope the portal would also be reactivated for the generality of the fresh female students soon enough.

Wabba’s NLC, TUC Insist On Strike; Say Court Order Is Black Market Injunction

The National Industrial Court, NIC, sitting in Abuja, yesterday, stopped the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Unions Congress, TUC, from embarking on strike today.

This came as Organised Labour and its civil society allies, yesterday, vowed to go ahead with the planned indefinite strike from today to make government reverse the N145 per litre pump price of petrol, despite the restraining order by the court.

Meanwhile, Senate, yesterday, threw its weight behind President Muhammadu Buhari’s hike in the price of fuel to N145 per litre from N86.50

Organised Labour’s position came on a day president of a faction of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Mr. Joe Ajaero, said Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, and others would not join the strike.

Consequently, the Wabba faction and the Federal Government, yesterday, agreed to set up a joint technical committee to review the new fuel pump price template of N135-N145 within the next two weeks and also work towards reviewing the current national minimum wage of N18, 000.

President of the National Industrial Court, NIC, Justice Babatunde Adejumo, in a ruling, yesterday, restrained the labour unions from going on strike, pending the determination of a suit the federal government lodged before it.

Justice Adejumo further ordered all the parties to maintain status quo until the legal dispute was settled.

The order followed an ex-parte application filed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN.

Determined to abort the planned strike action, the AGF approached the NIC, begging it to restrain the labour unions from “shutting down the nation”.

Relying on Section 14 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, the Federal Government insisted that it would not be “in the national interest” for the NLC and TUC to proceed on nationwide strike over the fuel price increase.

Malami argued that no amount of damages could serve as compensation, if the labour unions were allowed to shut down the economy.

Contending that the balance of convenience was in favour of the government, the AGF prayed the court to determine “whether the respondents (NLC, TUC) have complied with the laid-down condition precedent for embarking on strike.”

The AGF also prayed the court to determine “whether, indeed, there exists in law and, in fact, the basis of which the respondents’ total closure of the economy can be justified”.

He told the court that the respondents met on Saturday and issued a communique wherein they gave government a three-day ultimatum to reverse the decision increasing fuel price.

He said the respondents, aside from threatening to shut down the country, if government failed to reverse the fuel price increase, also threatened to close down all government offices, seaports, airports and markets.

The AGF argued that ordinary and law-abiding citizens would be subjected to hardship, if the respondents were allowed to go ahead with their threat.

He said the government was left with no alternative but to seek the intervention of the court.

Besides, Malami told the court that he got notice of the communique on Sunday and quickly filed an originating summons, a motion on notice and an ex-parte application to determine whether NLC’s decision was justified in the circumstance.

He insisted that “great and irreparable damage” would be done against the nation and “ordinary and law-abiding citizens”, should the court refuse the ex-parte application.

Though neither NLC nor TUC was represented in court, Justice Adejumo granted the ex-parte motion, even as he ordered the service of all the relevant court processes on the respondents.

The restraining order against the respondents will lapse after seven days.

However, Organised Labour and its civil society allies, incensed by government’s decision to seek rederess at the NIC in the midst of a negotiation, yesterday, vowed to go ahead with the planned indefinite strike from today to make government reverse the N145 per litre pump price of petrol.

Senate backs fuel price hike
The Senate, while sympathizing with Nigerians over the hardship caused by the increase in the price of petrol, however, urged government to urgently begin implementation of palliatives contained in the 2016 Appropriation Act passed by the National Assembly in the overall interest of Nigerians.

The Senate also asked Buhari’s government not to relent in its continued dialogue with organised labour and other stakeholders as a way of resolving issues around the increase to avoid grounding the system as well as impose more hardship on the people.

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over yesterday’s plenary, said: “The Senate in a closed session deliberated on the increase in the pump price of PMS by the Federal Government and the threats by Organised Labour to embark on a nationwide strike over the matter and resolved as follows: “That we sympathise with ordinary people of Nigeria on the hardships they are going through.

“The Senate will engage the Federal Government to find sustainable ways of improving the welfare of the people of Nigeria.

“That we call on government to continue to engage organised labour and other stakeholders to resolve issues in order not to ground the system and impose more hardships on our people.

“That government should immediately start to implement palliatives or palliative measures contained in the 2016 appropriation act passed by the National Assembly.”

It’s black market injunction —Wabba’s NLC, TUC
Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, faction, led by Ayuba Wabba, alongside TUC, and Joint Action Front, JAF, at separate meetings in Abuja and Lagos, described the restraining order by NIC as a black market injunction.

Leaders of Wabba faction of NLC and TUC, at their emergency National Executive Council, NEC, meeting in Abuja, insisted that once the strike commences today, only the joint NEC of NLC and TUC could call it off.

Although newsmen waited anxiously to be briefed on the outcome of the NEC meeting amid the court order, leaders of both bodies left the Labour House, Abuja, venue of the meeting without talking to journalists.

However, Vanguard sources at the meeting said NLC and TUC were infuriated that, while government was on one hand negotiating with them, its officials were on the other hand, seeking a black market injunction, and threatened to use the strike to make a statement to the government.

One of the leaders, who attended the meeting but spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Our decision not to suspend the strike was further fuelled by today’s (yesterday’s) injunction by the Industrial Court, restraining us from proceeding on the strike expected to begin tomorrow (today).”

Corroborating the position of Wabba-led NLC and TUC, Pro-Labour Civil Society Groups, Joint Action Front, JAF, vowed to disregard the restraining order.

According to the Secretary of JAF, Abiodun Aremu: ‘’The mass action is on! Let them come with the injunction, we would disobey whatever injunction they are coming up with.”

No strike — Ajaero
Meanwhile, Factional President of NLC, Joe Ajaero, yesterday, faulted the restraining order by NIC stopping the planned strike and mass protest.

Ajaero, while reacting to the restraining order by the President of NIC, Justice Babatunde Adejumo, contended that it was wrong for the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to have gone to court over a matter that parties were already on a negotiation table.

He equally wondered why the President of NIC would give an order on an ex-parte application without putting the other party on notice as was the practice.

Ajaero said: “This was not the first time a court would try to stop labour action. If you could recall, when Comrade Adams Oshiomhole was the president of NLC, there was a court order against planned strike by NLC and TUC, which Oshiomhole described as a black market injunction.

“It was very wrong for the Attorney General of the Federation to have gone to court while parties in this case, the federal government and Labour, were already on the negotiation table.”

“Ajaero restated his earlier position that labour could not have mobilised sufficiently enough for today’s strike without exhausting all avenues for settlement.

“When we spoke with you yesterday (Monday), we insisted that there was no way we could mobilize, sensitize and even start an action tomorrow (Wednesday).

''That we would rather negotiate and it is only when the negotiations might have collapsed that we take the option of going through any action.

“On the basis of that, we agreed that a committee should be set up to, among other things, look at the issue of minimum wage; look at the issue of N500bn social investment; look at the issue of setting up or reconstituting the PPPRA board and review the N145 new pump price of petroleum product.

‘’The committee is to report back in two weeks time. I won’t like to drag it more than this than to say this is the summary of the agreement reached.,” he stated.

Ajaero, however, insisted that his faction, including NUPENG, PENGASSAN, NUEE, among others, would not go on strike over fuel price hike by the Federal Government.

He spoke after his faction’s meeting with federal government officials ended early , yesterday morning. This was a few hours after the meeting with Ayuba Wabba’s faction ended.

The meetings, which ended without conclusion, were in session at press time last night. They started late yesterday evening.
