Apply For OAU Students' Union Scholarship For Indigent Students

The Students' Union of Obafemi Awolowo University has announced a scholarship scheme for the indigent students that are yet to pay their school fees.

Speaking with Journalists on Tuesday, July 29, the Students' Union leaders comprising of the Vice President and the PRO, they said the scholarship scheme was borne out of desire to ensure these indigent students pay up their school fees. They further said the scholarship scheme is been sponsored by some individuals, NGOs and bodies that will not be revealed now.


Interested applicants are to forward their applications to indelibleimpactscholarships@gmail.com or the form can be collected for free at the Students’ union building. The online should contain the applicant's names, matric number, address, department, parent/guardian address and phone number and also a statement indicating why you should be considered.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interview.

Faculty Of Agriculture Staff & Students Train In IITA

Twenty-two (22) members of staff and students of the Faculty of Agriculture, comprising five (5) staff of the Faculty SIWES Committee and eight (8) Internship Students; Three (3) staff members of the Department of Family, Nutrition and Consumer Sciences (FNC) and 6 students of the Department attended an intensive Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) training workshop on the processing of Biofortified Vitamin A Cassava into different products in the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan (see Pictures below).

This is as a result of the renewed collaboration between IITA and the University through the Faculty of Agriculture. The workshop was organized by HarvestPlus Programme, which is coordinated by both the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), and a part of the CGIAR (the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research) Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH) thathelps realize the potential of agricultural development to deliver gender-equitable health and nutritional benefits to the poor.


Staff and students of the Department of FNC and the Internship students in the Faculty have since been empowered to process Biofortified Vitamin A Cassava Flour into snacks, bread, gari and fufu which are now available at the HarvestPlus Shop donated to the Faculty by Mr. Pelumi Aribisala (An Alumnus of the University and a successful agribusiness entrepreneur). This is capable of providing huge opportunities for many people to enhance their potentials to generate income, employ others, and partner as entrepreneurs/Agribusiness Managers through the Vitamin A Cassava value chain.

The Internship team were led by 5 staff members: Dr. (Mrs) O. A. Yesufu (Chairperson, Faculty SIWES Programme), Dr. A. F. Agboola, Dr. (Mrs) B. O. Oyebanji, Dr. (Mrs) K. O. Bakare and Mr. O. Toromade; while the FNC team were led by 3 staff members: Mr. E. O. Fadeiye, Mrs. V. Fajolu and Mr. Omikunle.

Eligible Candidates must possess minimum of 5 Credits in 5 subjects at a maximum of two sittings including English Language (for ALL Courses), Mathematics (for Science-based and Social Science-based Courses) and Literature-in-English (for Law).

Whitney Houston's Daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown Dies At 22

Bobbi Kristina Brown, daughter of late singer Whitney Houston, has died aged 22, a family representative has said.

Kristen Foster said she passed away on Sunday surrounded by her family and was "finally at peace in the arms of God".

Brown was discovered face down and unresponsive in a bathtub on 31 January and placed in a medically induced coma. She never regained consciousness.

She was moved to a hospice in the city of Duluth, Georgia, a month ago after her condition deteriorated.

Brown was the only daughter of Houston and R&B singer Bobby Brown.

Whitney Houston was found dead in a hotel bath in Los Angeles in 2012.

The family posted a photo of Whitney with Bobbi Kristina as a baby on whitneyhouston.com with the following message:

"It is hard to say goodbye. On Sunday, July 26, Bobbi Kristina Brown made her transition peacefully. The family thanks everyone for their loving thoughts and prayers. As Bobbi Kristina would say: 'The wind is behind me and the sun is in my face.'"


"Bobbi Kristina Brown passed away July 26 2015, surrounded by her family," Ms Foster added.

"She is finally at peace in the arms of God. We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months."

Singer Dionne Warwick, Whitney Houston's cousin, described Bobbi Kristina as "a sweetheart".

"She will be missed, that's for sure. She was a good girl. She was a good little girl. She really was," she told Bravo's Watch What Happens Live.

Other stars paid tribute on Twitter, including Selma director Ava DuVernay, who said: "She seemed to be caught in the web of celebrity upon arrival. Twenty two years. A sad end. May the sister have peace now."

The BBC's Regan Morris in Los Angeles says Brown had dreamed of carrying on her mother's legacy as a singer and actress, and had a few small TV roles - but her career had not yet taken off.

In January, police said Brown was found face down in a bathtub in the suburban Atlanta home she shared with Nick Gordon, the man she called her husband. A police report described the incident as a "drowning".

Mr Gordon said at the time she did not appear to be breathing and lacked a pulse before emergency services arrived.

Brown was placed in a medically-induced coma and has been breathing with the aid of a ventilator.

OAU Professor Emerges New NSC President

The Nigeria Computer Society ‎(NCS) has elected Professor Sola Aderounmu as the next president of the information technology advocacy group for the next two years, (2015-2017).


Aderounmu, a Professor of Computer Science, from the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, who eventually emerged winner in an election conducted in Akure, Ogun State, shortly after the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of NCS, contested the position with the Chairman, Mobile Software Solutions, Mr. Chris Uwaje, who is fondly called the 'Oracle' of Information Technology (IT) profession.

Uwaje, however lost gallantly to the computer professor.

Although there were initially protests over some provisions of the new electoral guidelines released barely three days‎ to the elections, but the National Executive Council (NEC) and members of NCS, reached a compromise before proceeding with the elections.

Prof. Aderounmu polled 88 votes to defeat Uwaje who gave good account of himself rallying 62 votes.
Uwaje who accepted the election results in good fate, said although he put up a good fight, but lost gallantly to Aderounmu.


The incoming president takes over from Professor David Adewumi, whose tenure ended immediately after this year's AGM.

Prof. Aderounmu,‎ a fellow of the Nigeria Computer Society, was the Vice President to Prof. Adewumi. He is also the Director, Information Technology and Communications Unit of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The astute computer scientist with professional accomplishments, has promised to pursue various agenda to reposition NCS for the benefits of IT practitioners, the academia and the nation at large‎.

Mrs. Veronica Owolabi who garnered 105 votes to defeat Mr. Emmanuel Emecheta who got 44‎ votes, becomes NCS Vice President, while Mr. Jide Awe, the former Chairman, Publicity Committee, was elected as Chairman, Conferences Committee.

Aderounmu who thanked the entire NCS members for given him the mandate to direct the affairs of NCS in the next two years, listed his priority agenda to include leading the NCS to the path of more advocacy, research and development in IT and establishing more physical presence for the Computer Society.

He said NCS, under his watch, would pursue various programmes to engender IT penetration in rural areas and the use of indigenous software.

Breaking News: NASU Suspends Demonstrations, Resumes Work

A yet to be firmly established report has it that the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) has called off her demonstrations and thus directed her members to resume work.


Efforts to confirm the development proved abortive as the phone of the NASU chairman was off. However, the Students' Union PRO, Ojedokun Emmanuel a.k.a Immanuel Kant via one of the Union platforms confirmed the report.

A TRUE LIFE STORY
The time space between my admission into the great ife and my resumption into the institution is a part of my life I may never forget. In between these two monumental occasions was a holiday that was long and at the time unwanted. A long ASUU strike and an uneven calendar was the excuse that kept me at home for almost 13 months even though JAMB had told me that I had been admitted. However, when the holiday became quite boring and almost unbearable and acting upon the advice of family and friends, I got a job.

How I got my first job is another day’s story but one reason why my job was so spectacular was that it was in line with the course which I had just been admitted to study in the university; Pharmacy. I got a job in a community pharmacy as a sales attendant, what most Nigerians considering my masculine gender would refer to as a “Sales Boy”. My job description as a sales attendant was quite simple; I would simply sell Over the Counter (OTC) drugs, assist the pharmacist in dispensing prescriptions and behind the counter drugs. However, being a “student” of pharmacy at the Premier School of the noble profession, the superintendent pharmacist ( I hope he reads this) took me as his son and understudy; He told me things I would learn in school and most importantly, the things I wouldn’t learn in school (I am eternally grateful Sir!).

One of the extras that my professional father taught me was how to use the sphygmanometer, the device used to check blood pressure, and in a few months, I was efficient enough to check the blood pressure of customers whenever the Superintendent pharmacist wasn’t around or was busy. My newly acquired skill allowed me become friends with a lot of customers; most especially the older age group. Men and women in their forties and above would come to my “office” and I would check their blood pressure and relate it to their medication; stop a medication, reduce dosage or refer to the superintendent pharmacist. In the course of doing these things, I had to listen to their problems, struggles and issues that they felt had raised their B.P and try calming them. My little and newly acquired knowledge plus my OAU admission letter provided a basis of the confidence that my new friends had in me.

One of the friends I made during this time was Mr. Fagbemi. Mr. Fagbemi was an elderly man whom I predict to have been in his late fifties when I met him, He was one of the few Nigerians that believed that a high blood pressure was not a spiritual attack and so being more prone to this condition due to his age, he would come to the community pharmacy at a regular interval to check his Blood Pressure and eventually we became friends. Whenever he came around, we would wander off into a lot of topics; from the saddening state of the nation to the prestige of the Obafemi Awolowo University and he would show me glimpses into the times past and tell me stories of the late Obafemi Awolowo and other National Icons. I loved attending to Mr. Fagbemi because there was never a dull moment with him and every moment was enlightening but like quite a number of Nigerians, Mr. Fagbemi’s blood pressure was not so beautiful.

Mr. Fagbemi was whom you could describe as an average Nigerian; He lived in a rented apartment in a rural city in Ikorodu, He could afford three meals a day but couldn’t afford the luxury of being choosy with the meals, He perhaps had to send something back home being a ‘Lagosian’ in the family. Perhaps, it was his daily stress combined with his aging body that made his blood pressure go over the fair limit more often than usual and in the face of this, he had to be on steady medication.

Upon resumption to school, I left home, my job and my new friends to continue in my academic pursuit. However, anytime school was on break or ‘strike’, I would go back to my job and friends and one thing that made the stress of my job bearable was the company of these beautiful people. In May 2015, I was home on holiday and, as had become my custom, I went to sell drugs. On a fateful day as I sat in the pharmacy where I worked, waiting for the next customer, a neighbor brought me the saddening news that Mr Fagbemi had passed on.

I never got to know what caused Mr. Fagbemi’s death or his burial arrangements but I learnt that he had slumped at a friend’s place and upon getting to the hospital, the doctor pronounced him already dead and his family took him home for his burial. In my solitary mourning for my friend, I began to think of what might have taken Mr. Fagbemi’s life as no proper autopsy was performed; perhaps his blood pressure had gone too high or maybe that witch in his village had finally decided to become so villainous.

Even with his death Mr. Fagbemi still taught me a lesson, he showed me the role of the community pharmacy in the present Nigerian Health system. The Community pharmacy in Nigeria plays a vital role in the Nigerian Health system; it is the first link of an average Nigerian with the entire system. Whether a simple headache or terminal cancer; an average Nigerian would go to the Chemist’s Shop around the corner before he goes to a hospital for quite a number of reasons. Simply put, the community pharmacy is the first aid box of the society and in the Nigerian Society, all the majority ever gets for their illnesses is this first aid just because they cannot afford quality treatment. In Nigeria, the Community Pharmacy is not just an average Nigerian’s first link with the health system, for some like Mr. Fagbemi, it is the only solid link they ever get with the Nigerian Health system.

JAMB 2015: 7,817 Applied To Study Medicine In OAU

If the statistics on the website of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Boards (JAMB) is anything to reckon with, no fewer than 7,817 students who wrote the 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Exam (UTME) applied to study Medicine and Surgery in Obafemi Awolowo University.


The Department of Accounting had the second highest applicants with 5,554 followed closely by the Faculty of Law that had 5,049. Department of Education and French recorded the least number of applicants with only a person seeking admission to the department.

LATEST AS REGARDS RESUMPTION
The leadership of the Students’ Union having witnessed the development on the University campus today and having critically observed a relatively peaceful and serene environment with vehicular movement, light, Water and health Centre back in full operation.

The Union hereby suggests that since:

Barricades are no longer in place and there is vehicular movement.

Light and water and other welfare apparatus such as the Health Centre in fully operation.

With the HOPE that the above mentioned instrumentalities will be intact and unhampered with. We therefore Suggests that students should resume without fear or doubt in them.

In a meeting with leadership of NASU early today, they posited that their strike actions continues until their earned allowance is been paid.

We also hereby demand for the immediate payment of the 64-months earned allowance of the NASU workers so that our students will not continue to be victims of any social and politico phantasmagoria and be inimically subjected to undue academic and economic quagmire.

The students’ union also takes cognizance of the lectures that held today. We have been relating with the Academic Staff Union of University on the issue and assure quick resolution.

NASU Ends Congress, Adopts Motion Ground As New 'Office' For 'Revival'

The Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), Obafemi Awolowo University chapter has just finished her congress which started 09:37am this morning and come out with a resolution to continue with their initial resolve which is for her members not to return to work until their demands are met.

Over 300 members of the NASU stormed the Motion Ground right at the front of the Senate building today to discuss the next line of action on their agitation for the payment of their 64 months earned allowance. Some of these members have arrived the Congress venue as early as 7:30am. The University management had directed them to return to work on or before today which they obviously defied.

The resolutions reached by the NASU after their congress include:

1.) To continue with their demonstrations until their demands are met. At least, the payment of 30 months out of 64 months earned allowance will make them return to their work places.

2.) Demand the University Management to implement their allowances using the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) as contained in the document where the Federal Government advised University Managements.

3.) NASU will reply the Ooni of Ife and other notable individuals mediating the matter of their members' position following today's congress.


On a lighter mode, some members agitate that the NASU should put forth a query letter to the Vice Chancellor and Registrar for not coming to work today despite the free flow of vehicular movement.

The Chairman of the NASU, Comrade Oluwole Odewumi however announced that for the time being, the Motion Ground has been adopted as their new main office and they will all resume their daily for their 'revival' after which they will engage themselves in various duties as the 'Spirit' leads them.

The University remains scanty as most of the students are yet to resume back to campus despite the Management's announcement of resumption of academic activities. This, according to those on campus is not unconnected to the militarization of the University main gate which many feared could lead to something unpalatable today. Some classes however held today even with very low turn up by available students.

When our correspondent contacted the Students' Union Public Relations Officer, Ojedokun Emmanuel a.k.a Immanuel Kant to know what the Union will do regarding classes and reported tests that held today and those that will hold tomorrow whereby majority of the students are absent as a result of the Union's advice for them to delay resumption, Immanuel Kant said the Union believes that even if the Management has announced resumption, they did not mean tests and lectures will start immediately. He however said the Students' Union will make clarity on this and state the Union's position in a subsequent Release by the Union Leadership.

In the mean time, the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU), OAU branch will hold a congress by tomorrow. It is not clear if it is directly connected to the campus situation but speculations have it that it is. A member of NASU who spoke with us confirmed that the ASUU has pledged her solidarity to their struggle right from its beginning. He further said the ASUU OAU branch will not mind joining them once their national body gives them the green light to do so.

02:19pm: NASU Congress yet to reconvene but members are coming back to Motion Ground.

The submissions offered so far by members before going for break points to the indication that they are not ready to settle for less. Members admonished themselves to be strong and not weary. The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) was there to cover the Congress at the level of Motion Ground. Our correspondent from the main gate reported that the University PRO, Mr Biodun Olanrewaju was there and he told us that the actions of the NASU were not warranted. Congress to resume by 1:00pm. 11:17am: Congress embarks on a break. To reconvene by 1pm for the chairman's position following several submissions from members.

10:41am: A lot of differently coloured police officers are still at the school gate. Many will think they actually withdraw them all from the Boko Haram war field just for this face-off. All hands on deck while some folded on chest as we await NASU’s action(s) after their ongoing congress.

10:23am: NASU congress still ongoing. Members sing revolutionary songs. Vehicular movement is not disrupted.

09:58am: Chairman of the NASU, Comrade Odewumi confirms that the Presidency is now aware of the crisis. He admonished members to be united. He said they are still making their some findings at the moment.

09:39am: NASU Congress finally starts with opening prayers.

09:20am: The men of the Police Force gear up for eventuality as they barricade the exit to the express road (the one leading to Ibadan express road from gate after the Oshogbo road) and also sing their revolutionary songs. Over 200 NASU members are at Motion Ground. Congress should start any moment from now.

Pastor Kumuyi's Visit To Ile-ife Postponed Indefinitely

The earlier announced visit of the popular Nigerian televangelist and preacher, Pastor W. F. Kumuyi to Ile-Ife scheduled for Tuesday 21st - Wednesday 22nd July has been postponed indefinitely. No detailed reason was however given for the postponement.


The General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor W.F. Kumuyi on Sunday July 12th and Monday July 13th held a crusade in Akure, the Ondo State Capital. The crusade tagged : “Akure Mid-Year Miracle and Revival Crusade”.

OAU Battles ABU, Others At Olumide Oyedeji Intercollegiate Basketball Championship

All is set for the Eight-Team Olumide Oyedeji Intercollegiate Basketball Championship billed scheduled for Mobolaji Okoya-Thomas Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, from 19 to 27 September.


Four top teams selected from the last Nigeria University Games are: Ahmadu Bello University, University of Lagos, Federal University of Technology, Minna and Obafemi Awolowo University; while top two teams at the last Nigeria Polytechnic Games: Lagos State Polytechnic and Auchi Polytechnic; and the top two teams at the last Nigeria Colleges of Education Games: Niger State College of Education and Federal College of Education, Technical, Gombe.

After the draw, which was held in Lagos on Tuesday, OAU, ABU, Niger COE, and LASPOTECH were drawn in Group A, while FUT Minna, UNILAG, FCOE Gombe and Auchi Poly were drawn in Group B.


According to the Technical Director of the championship, Biola Shomala, after the first round, the top two teams in Group A would play the top two teams in Group B in a crisscross format to produce the finalists.

Oyedeji, a former captain of D’Tigers, told journalists at the draw that the championship, which he initiated, was aimed at promoting education and basketball.

The former Orlando Magic player said the championship would be another platform for promoting basketball in Nigeria, apart from the annual Olumide Oyedeji Basketball Camp, which would be held between August 31 and September 5.

The championship will be sponsored by the Olumide Oyedeji Foundation in partnership with Honeywell Flour Mill.

OAU Gate Militarized Ahead Of NASU-Management Tuesday Showdown

Just like most students have tagged it, if you call it 'impending mess', you may be right. If you call it a 'show down', you may be right and if you call it a 'face-off', you may be right as well but something is certain in Obafemi Awolowo University come tomorrow Tuesday, 21st July, 2015, the Management of the institution and the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) are ready to weigh muscle after both parties failed to reach a common ground in the just concluded weekend.

This evening saw the main entrance of the University militarized as armed men of the Nigerian Police Force have embarked on a parade and prepare for tomorrow's eventuality. Obvious with them are Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) and Patrol Vans. Aside these, there are speculations that men of the State Security Service (SSS) are within the University for similar reason.

As at the time of this report, it is not clear what they intend to do tomorrow but an average OAU student thinks they are there to dismantle NASU's possible barricade and lock-down at the school gate tomorrow.

Since July 3, members of the NASU have held the University community to a stand still as they demonstrated to agitate for the payment of their 64-months earned allowances. The Management has also since then responded that they are yet to receive the fund for that purpose from the Federal Government.






The lack of a Nigerian Minister for Education has been explained by critics as a major factor deteriorating the issue. A student of the institution who pleaded anonymity said "If Buhari has appointed a Minister for Education, he or she should be the one to intervene in this matter. How can Nigerian number one university be shut down for more than two weeks because of a claim that the FG has been indicted and nothing has been said by them. That is too bad."

Students of the University have earlier been directed by the University management to resume for academic work starting from tomorrow. The Students' Union in a counter Release issued out advised students of the Institution to stay off the campus until the whole issue has been resolved.

OAU Post-UTME Form Is Finally Out, See Details On Application & Schedule

The 2015 Post-Utme Screening Exercise of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife will take place on Saturday, August 8, 2015 by 12noon in various centres in Ile-Ife. All candidates are expected to be seated latest by 11:00am.

Candidates who chose OAU as their 1st or 2nd choice and scored 200 and above in the last UTME are eligible to participate in the exercise. Also, Direct Entry candidates who chose OAU as their 1st or 2nd choice are to register and come for the screening exercise on thesame date.

All candidates should register online on eportal.oauife.edu.ng or oauife.edu.ng. To register, each candidate will require a scratch card available at the sum of Three Thousand Five Hundred Naira only (N3,500.00) from any of the under-listed banks and locations.

NASU Strike: OAU Students Advised To Delay Resumption

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife have been advised by her Students' Union to observe the outcome of Tuesday and Wednesday's face-off between the University Management and the NASU before resuming back to campus.

In a Release signed by the President and the Public Relations Officer of the Union, Akande Omotayo a.k.a TY and Ojedokun Emmanuel a.k.a Immanuel Kant respectively, the Union stated reasons why it is imperative for students of the institution need not rush to resume from their mid-semester break. The Release however did not state what position the Union will take on already fixed tests and practical sessions for the two days since the University Management has announced Tuesday 21st July for resumption.

OFFICE OF THE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER AS REGARDS RESUMPTION

While the University management has the prerogative as the constituted authority to decide on closure, breaks and resumption, the smooth running of an ivory tower is dependent on the collaborative effort of all the component stakeholders. Our University stakeholders include the Principal Officers (the University authorities), Academic staffs, Non Academic Staffs and the students (the major stakeholders), the contribution of any of the afore-mentioned cannot be undermined.

The University management issued a circular dated 16th July, 2015 announcing the resumption of students from the Mid-semester break. NASU, in its release dated 17th July 2015 assert the continuation of its industrial action against the non-payment of their 64 month earned allowances and promised to entrench practical actions in the event that their strike is not called off on Tuesday. This was corroborated in the crucial meeting between the leadership of NASU and Students' Union earlier today. In the eventuality that the NASU strike is not called-off on/before Tuesday. The leadership of the Union on the following grounds;

1. That the continued industrial action might ground vehicular movement, thus, making it strenuous for our students coming from different parts of the nation with their bags and baggage's conveying themselves from campus gate to their various halls of residence.
2. That the likelihood of a physical confrontation between NASU, Students, State Security and the University authority should not put our students to become victims of seen and unforeseen circumstances.
3. That prior to the announcement of resumption the main cause of giving a mid-semester break (NASU Strike) has not been addressed.
4. That the continuation of NASU strike is likely to prevent the full operation of the health Centre, and jettison academic and environmental welfare condition.

OUR POSITION
The Students' Union hereby ADVISES that students should stay back at home, to observe the outcome of Tuesday and Wednesday's Nasu/Management face-off.

Ooni Meets OAU Management, NASU As Tuesday’s Impending Mess Looks Averted

What vast majority of students have tagged the ‘impending mess’ that may result from the disagreement between the Management of Obafemi Awolowo University and the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) may have been averted following the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade in the matter today.

 The members of the NASU had initially threatened to come out in ‘flying colours’ on Tuesday should the Management fail to listen to their demands. This was in reaction to the Circular by the University Registrar directing the Union members to return to their work places next week Tuesday of face disciplinary measures.

The Ooni of Ife in a meeting involving both parties this afternoon (Saturday, 18th July, 2015) sued for peace after listening to the University Management whose team was led by the Vice Chancellor himself and also the NASU led by her Chairman, Comrade Wole Odewumi.

 Comrade Odewumi confirmed the Union’s meeting with Ooni  of Ife to OAU Peeps News Agency tonight and he said he has promised to take the King’s message to his members on Tuesday during their Congress.

 “We’ve been there... Ooni begged us to be patient that the money has not been released by the Federal Government... We told them that we are not saying whether Government gave them money or the Government did not give them money. Where they got the money to implement the ones they have been paying, the responsibility allowance, they should find means of getting the same money that will cater for the generality of workers.”

When asked if the NASU is now ready to back down and shift ground considering Ooni’s  plea, he said he has already called a Congress and he will relay the plea to his members. He however maintained that the Vice Chancellor has not changed his tone as he insists on disciplinary measures should the NASU fail to obey the directive issued out some days ago.

 The University’s position since the NASU members started their demonstrations has been that the Federal Government is yet to remit the fund required to pay the NASU members and as such, no means to meet their demand.

With this, no substantial position can be inferred as relating to the fate of students should they return to campus on Tuesday as announced by the school authority but considering the status of the intervener, many believe the NASU is most likely to shift ground. The Students’ Union has however promised to come forth with a position after they get the briefing from the meeting of the Management and the NASU with Ooni of Ife. The Union leaders had earlier met with the NASU leadership earlier today on the same issue.

OAU Post-UTME Update

Despite the appalling reputation of Obafemi Awolowo University of being a school prone to frequent strike actions, thousands still register and sit for the university's post utme. This year does not promise to be an exception as many have sought for forms to register. Among these are predegree students who really have to sit for the examination before they are given admission.
Several dates have been speculated, the most rampant and recent being the 8th and 22nd of August 2015. However, the school website, at the time of compiling this report, had nothing relating to the sales of Post Utme forms. This comes as predegree students prepare to write their final examinations from the 21st to 25th of July.
It is advised that prospective students stay calm and wait for the school to officially announce the sales of form rather than risk falling into the hands of dubious people.

A Careful Peep At OAU NASU And School Management

Under the big banner of my personal nefelibata as I would love to put it, I would love to make a peep beyond the common rain that is pelting which has sent many back inside their various houses. Although there are others with me here with some cover of different looks covering

their heads to see the real intentions behind the rain that keeps roaring this mean on OAU ground.

The federal government is the rain cloud, NASU is the rain that pelts persistently now - pattering the face of the OAU ground bigly the ways it feels like and the ground that entertakes the rain is the OAU administration and or ASUU by extension. The students, they seem to never have existed at all afore in the drama but they are bearing much of the brunt somehow. The blows exchanged twixt the nada visible bodies take better surfaces on the faces of the students whether they

know it now or not.  Therefore, should Nasu keep on with all this, the school administration has the ground to gulp all their efforts very fine without a titch bruise on their fine faces but the students have no much or such bases. We have students that have just resumed that have not gone far with their outlines, some are in their final session andn for the fact that no one wants to spend all their tiny times in the world in some varsity, they want to finish and go practise in the real world; it disheartens when 4 sessions when calculated in the end turns out to be 6 or 5, 7 because of strikes, necessary and unnecessary ones.

There are out-going students whose results have not been released till date, how would they make their ways out to meet the requirements for NYSC program that is kind of mandatory in this state. I spoke with an alumna who is not a full one yet, a law student, he said what is delaying them - law students, now is some results that have not yet been released. I do not think releasing them will be easy now when things are not functioning fine even when it was, it was not so what do you expect? Students bear the pains too not just the Nasu staffs, if not the bigger cut of it. Yes, am much concerned about the students, I would not be if they are not the future of tomorrow. If things keep on going this manner over and over then where on earth is there future we bloviate about? Under this umbrella of mine in the heavy rain that keeps getting mean further and further I would love to use the lib I have earned under the constitution of this country to divulge the resolves I have garnered having a deep peep behind the mean pitter-pattering rain happening this mean: Nasu need there allowances and need it now because they have been hoodwinked by the federal Government and the school administration or management this far, the Vice Chancellor is beginning his long term leave soon which will be sequelled with the incoming of a new one sooner this season or in the next and if they

are not answered receiving it in the future might be hard to experience, majority of them leave on loan and it is this allowance thing they receive that usually help them up when the salary has been cut to few thousands of naira, the believe the school has the money but that it has been bagged into some privy account and lastly, it is going about in the disguise perhaps of rumour that the money was

hauled into one of the accounts of one of the big heads at the senate. The rain now is becoming much more angrier in the face and my umbrella has all ready lost its stance, lest I pretend to further having more peep at the powering force behind this ceaseless rain, that irked-up thunder approaching does its tearing thing by having me turn to naught.

There goes an ana that, '' big beasts no matter how tactical and crazy they dance vying, should they hold down the snail that always move on its lahar next to their cold noses and not lose their tails''. The school management has called back students to resume halls of residence on the 21st July. NASU said "we have not started anything, we are just beginning". Students are sore-confused.

Management Will See Us In Flying Colours On Tuesday –NASU OAU

In reaction to the Circular issued by the management of Obafemi Awolowo University directing members of the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) to resume work on or before next week Tuesday, the Union has said the management will get a desired response very early on Tuesday morning.

Aggrieved by the direction of the university management, the NASU chairman, Comrade Wole Odewunmi has ruled out the possibility of his members resuming back to work on Tuesday if the Management does not accede to their demands. In a telephone chat with our correspondent, Comrade Odewunmi asserts the NASU’s position as situation currently stands.

“Our reaction to it (Circular) will come next week Tuesday by the grace of God as early as possible because we have got the paper and we have prepared our own too.

“There is nothing of such (possibility of compliance to the management’s directive). On Tuesday morning, as early as possible, the University authority will see the NASU in flying colours... They will see us in flying and thick colour.

“I can promise you that on Tuesday morning, in this school, they will know that the NASU is part and parcel of this university.”

Comrade Odewunmi also denied reports that the NASU OAU has written to the Federal Government on the matter. According to him, the Union wants to exhaust all means to get to the desired point.

The NASU Chairman also confirmed their meeting with the Ooni of Ife. He said the meeting with Ooni allowed them to concede power and water supplies for 3 days. Comrade Odewunmi further denied reports credited to the University Public Relations Officer, Mr Biodun Olanrewaju that the Police dismantled their barricade. He said his members never mounted any barricade since they returned from the meeting with Ooni of Ife and as such no barricade was dismantled.

With this, the NASU seems not to have subscribed to the same page with the management yet. The question on the lips of many Great Ife students since the news of resumption date announcement filtered out has been; will lectures really resume on Tuesday when the NASU is yet to be settled? Tuesday is about four (4) days away from now.

OAU Management Berates NASU, Orders Members Back To Work

The Obafemi Awolowo University authority has described the recent demonstrations by members of the Non Academic Staff Union, NASU over their unpaid 64 months accumulated allowance as ‘total disregard for constituted authority’ and ‘recalcitrant’ and thereby directed them to resume work.

In a Circular signed by the University Registrar, D. O. Awoyemi, the university management has expressed dissatisfaction over the continued demonstrations by the NASU stating that despite several appeals, meetings and entreaties to the Union by the University Management, the Pro-Chancellor of the University, the University Governing Council and the Oni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade, the NASU executives have refused to show understanding. The University management has also described their absence from work during their protests as illegal.

Members of the NASU have however been directed in the same Circular to return to their duty posts on or before Tuesday, 21st July, 2015. Failure to comply with this directive, the University authority has vowed to take appropriate disciplinary measures against erring members.

Efforts to reach the Chairman of the NASU, Comrade Odewunmi to know the current position of the NASU proved not too fruitful as he was on the wheel while we called in. We promised to call him back.

It will be recalled that members of the NASU started the agitation for the payment of their 64 months earned allowances since Friday, July 3 thereby disrupting academic, administrative and economic activities within the University community.

The management of the Obafemi Awolowo has announced the resumption date of the 2014/2015 Harmattan mid-semester break. The resumption has been stated for Tuesday, 21st July, 2015.

Male Presence At Alumni Hall During Odd Hour Stirs Controversy

The peace and serenity of yesterday's night was disrupted as a shouting match ensued between two girls who both reside in Block 3 of Alumni Hall. A disgruntled lady was heard chanting the slogan 'Alumni Queens, come out!' at about some minutes past 10:00pm.

The lady (name withheld) said she heard a male voice from the next room at an odd hour which was not supposed to be and she reported to the hall chairperson.

This morning, the lady who reported the matter and the hall chairperson claimed that the accused lady was being rude which the accused denied after all. The accused girl claimed she already admitted her fault but the other girl raised her voice which she did not feel comfortable with. 'I admit that I was wrong but the guy was already leaving. I was looking for a jacket to wear so I could see him off. That was why he was here at 10:02pm." the accused narrated.

As at the time of filing this report, the hall security man (on morning duty) has intervened. He advised them to be well behaved because males were not supposed to be in the hostel by that said hour. He said their major responsibility there was for their security.

Dr. Deji Adejobi Was Shot Dead By Suspected Assassins

The serene atmosphere at Obafemi Awolowo University OAU, Ile-Ife was on Tuesday night shattered as a lecturer in the department of Agricultural Economics of the institution, Dr. Deji Adejobi, was killed by suspected assassins at his residence located at The-Dawn area, near the Ife toll gate in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

According to Adejobi’s gateman (names withheld), who recounted how the incident took place said the assailants trailed the deceased to his house at exactly 10:10 on Tuesday evening and shot him twice after shooting into the air to scare the residents of the community.

Also, one of the children of the late lecturer, Oyin Adejobi, in an emotion laden voice narrated how her father was murdered in cold blood.

“As we finished our evening prayer at 10:05 pm, Daddy drove into the compound. Then I overheard an argument between the gateman and some strange people. I quickly looked from the window and I saw another black car that entered our compound together with Daddy’s car. Our gateman was querying the occupants of the other car but they hit him and ordered him to lie down.

“The men in the black car came out before daddy could alight from his car and one of them shot into the air. Two of them advanced to daddy’s car while others came inside. Grandma started begging those that came inside to spare our lives. Suddenly, we heard gunshot twice from the outside.

“The assailants left at 10:20 and took daddy’s car away. I overheard daddy begging them that they should not take him away. When they left, we thought they took him away and we started praying for the safety of daddy without knowing that he had been killed. When the police came, they saw his lifeless body in the flower”, Oyin explained .

The younger brother of the deceased who is also the Public Relations Officer PPRO for Ogun State Police Command, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi described the death of his brother as very pathetic.

The Police Public Relation Officer for Osun State Police Command, Mrs Folashade Odoro while confirming the incident said the command has commenced investigation into the matter and assured that the police would fish out the killers.

The Public Relation Officer of OAU, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju also said the death of Dr Adejobi was very unfortunate, adding that the management, staff and students of the university were very sad about the development.

Olanrewaju regretted that it was unfortunate that university lecturers have become the target of kidnappers, armed robbers and assassins. He warned that the trend is dangerous for education system in the country.

Management Yet To Receive NASU’s Earned Allowances From FG –OAU PRO

In the heat of the ongoing NASU’s demonstration in Obafemi Awolowo University over the nonpayment of her members’ 64 months earned allowances, different allegations have been raised including that the school management has received the money meant for that purpose from the Federal Government but has refused to pay.

During an interview by OAU Olofofo, the University Public Relations Officer, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju has denied the reports that the school management has received the earned allowances meant for NASU members but refuses to pay.

“Well, the NASU protest, by virtue of what the constitution says, every union, every society, every organization has the right to protest. But the basis of that protest must be genuine and objective. NASU claims that the federal government has paid the money to pay annual allowances. But to the best of my knowledge, with apology to the NASU, the federal government has not paid a dime to the school administration.

“Let me add that the annual allowances are not peculiar to OAU. The non-payment of these allowances is not peculiar to OAU. All federal universities have not been paid these allowances. If you go to federal university, Akure, University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, University or Benin, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Ilorin. All of them have not been paid these annual allowances. But you know, OAU believes in militancy and thinking that we are the champion of the masses, but the management says that by the moment the federal government pays their money, the university authority would begin implementation immediately.

The University PRO further claims that NASU’s earned allowances have accumulated over 64 months but said the management does not have the financial muscle to pay them independently.

“Nobody is disputing that (64 months allowances accumulation). If you put that money together, the university cannot have means of paying it. It is the federal government that entered into agreement with them. It is the federal government that entered into agreement with NASU, SSANU, NAAT and ASUU. And it is the same federal government that can give the financial backing to the terms of agreement. You will agree with me that they are not fighting the university management per say, they are fighting that the university management should find way of paying this annual allowances. Not that the federal government has paid this money but they are telling the university management to find way and means of paying this money to them. And we say no, no. All of us will get this money including the Vice Chancellor but what are saying in essence is that, it is the federal government that has financial muscle that could give kits to what they are demanding for. And basically speaking, if you want the federal government to pay this money, I am of the opinion that they should have directed this energy to Abuja and not OAU.

Also speaking on the current break the students have been mandated to proceed on, Mr Olanrewaju said that the school was not closed rather, a mid-term break was given. He further stated that the university management will recall the students once it considers it appropriate.

“We never close the university. We told you that we gave you 'mid-semester break... I have issued this mid-semester break circular for more than four times since I have assumed the duty of PRO of the university. So, for most of you who are in part one, two or three here, you will say in your set, we have never heard of 'mid-semester break'. Now, if you graduate and leave the school and another set comes in, part one, two or three. If there is scenario that would make us to ask them to go on a mid-semester break, they would be claiming what you are claiming. So, nobody can link us to the history among all of you here, nobody. So, more than two or three times, I have issued it myself. So we have done it on several occasions not once, not twice. So, I am in the better position to tell you and not you to tell me. For you not to have had it doesn't mean that it has never happened on this campus. During Prof. Fabode era, the immediate past Vice Chancellor, we did it twice. During Prof. Makanjuola era, we did it once. So, what are you saying?” the PRO said.

Id-el-fitr: FG Declares July 17, 20 Public Holidays

The Federal Government has declared July 17 and 20, 2015 as public holidays to the mark sallah celebration.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Abubakar Magaji who made the declaration on Tuesday in Abuja, enjoined all Muslim faithful and Nigerians in general to extend the spiritual benefits of Ramadan, which include love, peace and sacrifice for the development of the nation.

He also urged Nigerians to support the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari “in his determination and sustained efforts towards building a peaceful, united and virile nation.”

Magaji further urged all Nigerians, both at home and abroad to use the occasion to pray for peace and unity across the nation.

The Permanent Secretary wished Nigerians a happy and joyous celebration.

Naira Drops To A Record Low: N241 Against The Dollar

The naira hit another record low of 241 against the dollar at the parallel market on Monday as the Central Bank of Nigeria’s restrictions on foreign exchange sale fuelled unofficial trade in dollars, Reuters reported.

The ban on importers from accessing the Nigerian foreign exchange markets for the importation of 41 items had led to the volatility of the naira-dollar exchange rate at the black market.

Since June 23 when the new forex rule became operational, the naira has fallen by 10.5 per cent from 218 to 241 against the greenback.

Foreign exchange dealers said the artificial scarcity of the United States currency still pervaded the market.

The new forex rule had led to huge demand at the parallel market, causing dealers to hoard the dollar in anticipation of further fall in the naira
Economic analysts had said the CBN needed to devalue the naira to allow the local currency achieve an equilibrium price against the dollar.

The central bank had however said it would not be focusing on the thinly-traded parallel market when determining the exchange rate, adding that people preferred to use the unofficial market for undocumented transactions.

Foreign investors had been on the sideline, waiting for the CBN to devalue the naira before investing in naira-denominated assets.

Local and foreign analysts had predicted that the naira might hit 250 against the dollar at the parallel market any time soon if the artificial scarcity trend continued.

The central bank appears to be in a fix as the spread between the official and parallel market continues to widen by the day.

Meanwhile, stocks fell to a more than three-month low and the naira on Monday, Reuters reported.

The local bourse, which has the second-biggest weighting after Kuwait on the MSCI frontier market index, dropped for the ninth consecutive day as investors shed banking, consumer and oil shares.
