Sex-For-Marks: Sacked OAU Lecturer To Remain In Custody, Court Rules Today

The Federal High court sitting in Osogbo on Tuesday declined the bail application of an ex-lecturer with Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Professor Richard Akindele.

Akindele was earlier arraigned by Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for allegedly demanding sex in exchange for marks from Monica Osagie, a postgraduate student of the institution.

The presiding Judge, Justice Maureen Onyetenu at the last proceedings adjourned for definite trial and hearing application for bail but asked that Professor Akindele be remanded in prison.

At the hearing on Tuesday, the ICPC counsel, Kehinde Adetoye, told the court that they were ready to open the case for trial and had a witness in court out of six witnesses.

However, the trial could not go on because the lead counsel for ICPC was absent in court due to some other official assignment and he wanted to personally conduct the case.

The defence counsel, however, moved the application for bail which the ICPC counsel objected to.

The court then ordered that the facts alluded to in the counter affidavit of the prosecuting counsel needed to be corroborated with evidence.

The judge then adjourned till 17th of December to enable all parties to produce evidence alluded to in the affidavit.

If you are planning a cruise on a yacht, then, most likely, you have already decided which exotic places you want to visit. However, choosing an appropriate vessel for a cruise is not always easy!

Our experts know what to look for when choosing a suitable yacht!

Do you want to buy a luxury yacht at a reasonable price? Visit https://jiji.ng/275-yachts! An excellent choice of modern luxury yachts as a gift for you or for business from real sellers!

Material

Aluminum, pluses:
● durable body;
● excellent microclimate in the cabins;
● well protected from lightning;
● no osmosis.

Aluminum, minuses:
● expensive internal insulation;
● significant time required for the construction of the yacht;
● large consumption of materials.

Fiberglass, pluses:
● absorbs noise better than aluminum;
● preferable for small boats;
● small repair costs;
● relatively light weight and high speed;
● easy maintenance.

Fiberglass, minuses:
● insufficient body sturdiness.

What is better: a monohull or a catamaran yacht?

A monohull, pluses:
● occupies less space in the port;
● when overkill, they return to their normal position automatically.

A monohull, minuses:
● the internal layout of a single-hulled vessel is almost always the same, which means it is quite boring;
● significant sludge that leads to an increased risk of running aground.

Catamarans, pluses:
● almost no tilting;
● large under-deck volumes;
● insignificant sludge;
● easy maneuvering in harbors;
● they move fast, with a slight tilt, and cope with the waves perfectly.

Catamarans, minuses:
● are charged with higher port taxes;
● the threat of overturning during sudden strong squalls.

Suitable length
A modern 34-foot yacht provides the crew (especially the one consisting of a few members) with space and amenities much better than a 12-meter yacht from the past.

The minimum size of a cruise yacht is explained by a different reason - how the yacht can maneuver in the sea. Therefore, the region where you are going to use the yacht is very important. If it’s the Baltic sea with its short waves, then 35-feet can be considered sufficient length for the yacht. In the Mediterranean the optimal length is 40 feet. As for the Atlantic, the best yacht for calm and safe swimming can be the one at least 42 feet long.
Anyway, the size of the yacht is directly related to its speed.

In conclusion, let's say that preparing a yacht for long voyage is not an easy task. However, as they say, where there's a will there's a way!

Get Help Worldwide Registration, Login & How It Works

Rich people focus on opportunities. Poor people focus on obstacles,” & “The speed of your success is limited only by your dedication and what you're willing to sacrifice” ― Nathan W. Morris

Just like someone wrote, many walk pass opportunities without recognizing them, and that was how I ignored several invitations to become a pioneer member of MMM Nigeria and I called it scam and said it was a networking business. As of now, the government has continued to discourage people from partaking in the scheme because it is a bubble and a ponzi scheme, but the bitter truth is that, those who started early enough in the previous year, 2016 have their financial freedom testimonies to share. To break jaws, MMM went on break in December and has proved critics wrong by a promised gallant return this January.

[TO REGISTER CLICK HERE or visit http://goo.gl/Ta9bTk]

Are you selling MMM to me? No, I have taken time to study its operation and I noticed some parts of its structure that would make it not too sustainable. Parts of those lapses are too many people enjoy unnecessary benefits, ones money is tied down for too long (30 days) and loose regulations guiding participating members and their enforcement.

All of these have been corrected and improved on in ‘Get Help Worldwide’. Before you shrug and say, which ponzi scheme is this again?, I want to tell you emphatically and authoritatively that it is VERY real and working. I registered in December and wanted to be sure of what I was told too. I have friends who have been into this since last year October and they are making the promised MONEY!!! Bonus: Infact, once you register via the link I will drop, I will share with you the secret on how you can get paid about 3 times in a month with single unit money. For example, if you have just N50,000... You’ll get the percentage increase three times within 30 days. It is very real!

Now let me introduce you to Get Help Worldwide (GHW)
GHW is a community of people providing each other financial help on the principle of gratuitousness, reciprocity and benevolence. In GHW you don’t have to make contracts or pledge your property, there are no lenders and no debtors. Everything is very simple: One participant asks for help – another one helps.

The only thing that GHW demands from its participants is to be honest and kind to each other. You ask for financial help when you need it, you give financial help when you are able to do it.

[TO REGISTER CLICK HERE or visit http://goo.gl/Ta9bTk]

How does it work?
After you register, you create the willingness to provide help and your order will be created, your money start growing immediately, it takes GHW about 20 – 25 days to match you with a participants when you will pay the person and get confirmed and when your order gets to 30 days you can create an order to get help and you will be matched within 1 hours of creating the order. Note: What this means is that your money will only be out of your hand for just 5 – 10 days.

Interest
For local currency (Naira), you’ll get 30% increase in 30days including the days you waited before you got matched.

For Bitcoin, you’ll get 50% increase including the days you waited to get matched.

Registration Bonus Ranges for Local Currencies are as Follows;
(1.) 4,000 Registration Bonus — if you have contributed from 15,000 to 149,000.
(2.) 10,000 Registration Bonus — if you have contributed from 150,000 to 649,000.
(3.) 20,000 Registration Bonus — if you have contributed from 650,000 and above of your Local Currency.

GUIDERS/SPONSORS Bonuses
Like I said earlier, this is one flaw in MMM that GHW has corrected, there are NO Guiders/Sponsors in this Platform. This platform has been DESIGNED TO LAST FOREVER and therefore does not support the excess payout privileges of Guiders which drains the system.

The System ONLY Supports/Allows REPRESENTATIVES who are given extra 5%-10% of their Provide Help Offer in Addition to their 30% if they are participating in Local Currency or 50% if in Bitcoin in 30 days depending on how hardworking they are.

How to register
TO REGISTER CLICK HERE or visit http://goo.gl/Ta9bTk

Via the link above, you'll create an account, but remember to use davospeaks@gmail.com as your ‘Referral E-mail (Optional)’

Lest I forget, for the tip to make 3 times your money within 30 days, send me a mail via ‘ghwfriends@gmail.com’ with the subject ‘GHW Referred: 3 times turn’. Please include the name you registered with and your e-mail in the mail.

Here Is What You Need To Know About the Health & Farming Benefits Of Chicken

Chicken may be rightly considered one of the most popular foods all over the world. Just think: besides its delicious taste and nutritional properties, chicken wins, because millions of people don’t eat pork or beef because of the religious beliefs or health conditions. Chicken is “universal” in this aspect.

Health benefits
They are numerous. Besides being a rich source of proteins, vitamins and minerals, chicken possesses other important qualities, including cancer prevention.

1. Protein: Protein plays a very important role in human’s diet – it is a building material for muscles. High level of protein in chicken makes it one of the main sources of this element.
2.Vitamins and minerals: Vitamins of B group prevent skin disorders, cataracts, boost immunity and regulate digestion. They also improve nervous system, preventing migraines and heart diseases, lower cholesterol and protect from the diabetes. Vitamin A is precious for the vision. Vitamin D strengthens bones and helps with calcium absorptions. Iron is useful for hemoglobin formation and helps to prevent anemia. Phosphorus helps to deal with general weakness, takes care of bone health, brain functioning, and metabolism.
3. Weight: Protein is effective in reducing weight. It is one of the reasons, why chicken is included in the majority of dieting programs.
4. Blood pressure: After studies of a diet for people with hypertension, researchers found out that chicken consumption is useful for lowering blood pressure.
5. Reduced cancer risk: Chicken, as well as fish, reduces the risk of developing colorectal cancer, unlike red meat.
6. Cholesterol: As chicken contains lower amount of saturated fats, consumption it reduces risk of cholesterol accumulation.
7. Cold: The tastiest way to cure someone, who caught a cold, is to give them some chicken soup. It guarantees relief from the congested nose and a sore throat.

Chicken farming
In the second part of the XIX century, household chicken farming grew from a part of a bartering system to the full-scale farming business.

Nevertheless, the best and the tastiest chicken are those that grow on your own farm. Even keeping some chicken in the backyard will result in numerous benefits. You can reduce food waste, get a natural fertilizer and regularly consume fresh eggs.

Chicken doesn’t need much space. If you can let them out of your garden, a small cage will be enough.

Chickens are very easy to look after. This occupation doesn’t require much time or effort. Some species, those that are wasted for meat in the first place, don’t even need “freedom”: you can keep them is a small cage and just provide with enough food.

In general, the best way to learn how to look after chicken is to buy some for your own household and find everything out in practice.

Why You May Consider Disposing Your BlackBerry Phone Before 2016 Ends

By Adetula David

If you say Mark Zuckerberg, the owner of Facebook has placed Blackberry on a time-bomb of irrelevance, you may not be totally far from the truth though no one knows the last card Blackberry has in stock to play to salvage its ‘dignity’.

During the first quarter of this year (2016), it was announced that WhatsApp and Facebook will no longer support Blackberry Operating System (OS), including Blackberry 10. WhatsApp was the first to cut support in an official announcement on February 26 this year. According to a Release commemorating WhatsApp seventh year anniversary, it saw the need to develop with the fast developing interface of mobile devices, hence, the need for WhatsApp to look ahead to the next seven years and focus more on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use.

“As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use. So, by the end of 2016, we will be ending support for WhatsApp Messenger on the following mobile platforms: BlackBerry, including BlackBerry 10, Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Android 2.1 (Éclair) and Android 2.2 (Froyo) as well as Windows Phone 7.1” the Release stated.

Photo credit: bidnessetc.com
The simple reason given for this is that the future expansion of the app’s features cannot be contained by the capabilities of those devices.

Just about a month later, Facebook also announced that it will also drop support for BlackBerry making it almost hard for any person willing to manage the first straw think twice and deeply. With this, it means BlackBerry users will have to use the mobile version of the website to log on the social network.

In a reaction to the development, one of BlackBerry’s officials said it is extremely disappointed with Facebook’s decision to discontinue support for its app. Even as the WhatsApp support to BlackBerry and the above listed platforms is billed to end by 2016, no specific period has been stated for the Facebook support to end, though there are insights that both supports may be terminated at the same time.

For BlackBerry users, we do hope that you will find this development manageable else you may consider disposing your BB phones before the value drastically drops by 2016 end.

Health Tips For The Hot Weather

The hot season is a period, were there is extreme hotness and heating in the climate. It is very important to stay healthy during the hot season, because there are a number of heat-related diseases that could occur during such period.

Also, during such periods of extremely hot weather, you can also get uncomfortable and sweat a lot.

The climate seems to get hotter each year.

How can you avoid the illnesses associated with this hot weather? How can you generally stay healthy this hot season? Stay tuned.

Diseases associated with hot season
They are also known as heat-related diseases.
These are diseases that occur when or due to extreme heat in the environment. They include:

1. Heat cramps.
2. Heat exhaustion
3. Heat Stroke
4. Heat Rashes
5. Meningitis (can be worsened in cases of severely hot weather).

They are certain groups of people who are at higher risk of getting sick.
These include: Aged persons who are 65 years or more, young children 4 years or less, obese people, people with heart diseases or mental illnesses.
Now, the question is how do you stay healthy
during this hot weather.

Health tips for hot weather
There are so many things you should do if you want to survive the hot season healthy and happy. These tips will not just help you avoid the heat-related diseases, but also remain very comfortable despite the hot climate.

1. Stay hydrated at all times
In this period you should drink more water than the way you normally do, and also don't wait until you get thirsty to drink water .
Drink plenty of fluids apart from water. Dehydration is the common factor of heat-related diseases. Don't take alcohol it can induce dehydration.
So remember to stay hydrated always.

2. Avoid too much sun exposure
Reduce the amount of time you spend outside, especially during midday when the sun is hottest.
In cases where you need to be out, you should use a light umbrella.

3. Eat lighter meals
Eat foods that are not heavy, reduce the intake of carbohydrates. Eat more salads, fresh vegetables and fruit.

4. Wear light clothes
This is not the time for fancy suites and tie. Cloths that are light weight and loose fitting prevents you from excessively sweating and keep your body cool. Don't wear black or dark colored, as they absorb heat. Instead you should put on lightly colored clothing.

5. Take your bath more than once a day
Have a regular shower in a day to keep your body cool and sweet.
It doesn't matter how many times you do shower, just make sure it's not just once in a day.

6. Stay in a well ventilated place
You should always stay in places where there is adequate air. Especially
where your young children sleep . Don't rely on just your fan for air. Open the windows, make good use of hand fans.

7. Exercise
Exercising should be during the early hours if the day. Exercising regularly can help reduce sweating.

8. Avoid or reduce using oily creams and moisturizers.

They will only keep you hotter and increase sweating.

9. Don't leave your children locked up in a car.

What about the illnesses?
In case you get sick from the heat (which I earnestly hope doesn't happen). You should watch out for these symptoms.

• Yellow urine
• Nausea
• Headaches
• Extensive sweating
• Muscle Cramps
• Dizziness
• Reddish rashes, mostly on the neck or upper chest, or in the elbow and under the breasts.

What you should when you get these symptoms are:
1. Apply powder to keep the affected areas dry in cases of heat rashes.

2. In cases of muscle cramps, you should massage your limbs to ease the cramps and apply pressure with ice packs.

3. If it gets serious, see your doctor immediately. Also, when there is an emergency you should call the nearest emergency center.

Thank for reading. I'd love to read your comments.

Without A Cabinet, Nigeria Is Stuck 'On Hold' - Reuters

Seven months after Muhammadu Buhari was elected president on a promise to "fix" Nigeria, a policy vacuum has brought decision-making to a halt, hampering everything from national budget planning to new roads and art exhibitions.

Late on Thursday, the Senate ended yet another session screening Buhari's ministerial candidates without giving its approval, leaving Africa's biggest economy with no government since the former military ruler took office on May 29.

With political wrangling in full swing, lawmakers will need at least another week for more vetting. After three weeks, only half of Buhari's 36-strong lineup has got the green light.

Buhari has launched the first steps to reform the oil sector in Africa's biggest producer and fight graft, which is blamed for most of the nation of 170 million people living in poverty despite Nigeria's vast energy wealth.

But some of his high-flying plans are gathering dust in rudderless ministries while entrepreneurs and businessman look on in vain as Africa's biggest economy reels from the decline in crude prices.

"We support Buhari's change but ministers need to get appointed and start working," said Chidubem Nnajiofor, whose computer shop has been struggling to pay for imports because of central bank currency controls imposed to protect the naira.

"You cannot get dollars even if you have a letter of credit."

BUDGET DEFERRED
The 72-year-old president has won praise for a bailout of federal states and audits designed to root out graft but, with the economy flatlining, investors wonder why he took four months to name a cabinet of familiar political faces.

"For a while, one could say that transparency reforms introduced by the new government and the state government bailout possibly trumped the appointment of a cabinet," said Razia Khan, Chief Economist, Africa, at Standard Chartered Bank.

"As we get closer to the budget cycle deadline and important decisions on subsidies and taxation need to be taken, the absence of a cabinet will likely become more glaring."

Parliament typically tables the annual budget in November but there is no draft yet for a planned supplementary budget for this year, let alone a proposal for 2016. Discussions are likely to take longer than normal because of the need of spending cuts.

The lack of a government has hampered even basic ministry work such as aid projects or state-sponsored art exhibitions. Business people and diplomats have been dealing with undersecretaries who are afraid to sign off on anything.

"No political decisions are being taken at the moment at ministries," said a Western diplomat who asked not to be named.

Even when the Senate clears Buhari's nominees, ministers will have to wade through reams of documents that have piled up on their desks over the last half a year before getting down to work.

ONE-MAN SHOW?
Many Nigerians support Buhari's cause to fight graft. Most people in the country struggle to make ends meet while a globe-trotting elite has enjoyed an oil bonanza.

To the delight of many, foreign airlines are reporting a slump in first-class bookings as high-rollers take care over displays of wealth, and noticeably fewer private jets jostle for space at Abuja's airport.

But in the absence of ministers, reforms aired before the election - such as curbing food imports to boost domestic farming - are stuck on the drawing board, and without any consideration for their consequences.

For example, if steel imports are curbed, as has been mooted, Buhari may have to drop some infrastructure projects because local steel output is insufficient, executives say.

The cabinet delay is also sowing confusion and intrigue, according to political insiders, with some ministers on the cabinet list telling friends which portfolio they have landed, only to call back later to say they are not so sure.

Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, head of state oil firm NNPC, is expected to become junior oil minister with Buhari maintaining oversight of the sector.

Buhari - by his own admission not an economist - has tasked his deputy president, Yemi Osinbajo, a commercial lawyer, with overseeing economic policy. Osinbajo has said dollar curbs are only a short-term measure to preserve currency reserves.

But the wider paralysis is blocking nearly all government spending, putting a big brake on growth.

"It's only when government starts embarking on capital projects that there is money," said Joel Mtsor, who runs a printing firm in Abuja that relies on government work.

"Nothing is happening - no workshops, no seminars. As I speak there is no printing company today that is busy," he said.

"South Africa Forgets History Quickly And Hastily Tears The Page Of Brotherhood"

Foreigners must go because they get jobs than the land owners said the Zulu king was a wrong, too fragile thing to say of a leader. He made a generational mistake. The South African citizens have committed a foul really too great to be accepted, their government illogical and non-future minded. Because of this, we have never stopped crying, the regret has never stopped. In a country partly born out of the 27 years imprisonment of Nelson Mandela, a man respected, helped and desired by the whole world, this foul is too great to be accepted.

This has reflected that South Africa has neglected the fact of how she was born and where she comes from but should have respected the love and the strive that shifted Nigerians to their shore. South Africa has no great concern about what we could all achieve, about what the future holds if we could live together. South Africa has quickly forgotten their history and hastily tears the page of brotherhood. To this their brutal nature, it means Mandela’s ideal even born out of great pain made no meaning to South Africa. How too soon do South Africa forget the moment of apartheid, how too soon do a country neglect her history resulting to an unacceptable brutality towards fellow African brothers. Indeed an absolute misbehavior of South Africa towards Nigeria in recent times even to xenophobic level.

Once upon a time
Lived a continent a united fabric
Innocent like the soaring eagle
Just a jump across the wall
Our indefinable crude quality
Garnished with chronic wickedness
Country firing their friends
Even when our feet are tired
A continent got fueled by blood
An unanswered cry
Africa shutting down
A hope yet found in South Africa
Xenophobia in South Africa

Sometimes, we want to defend Africa, we want to argue for Africa against the whole world that a hope yet found in the past Africa’s generation has been born. We want to say Africa has a new ideal and proper tenets but sometimes too this is difficult to do when an unexpected country misbehave not just against herself but against the fellow black brother, when a man chopped off the other guy’s head, cut off his ear, maimed him or get him blind all because he was a foreigner working hard. We all fought for apartheid but what exactly can we call this imbecilic idea? But yet when the South Africa’s idea is truly ill, I can still say Africa has grown quickly and well beyond the ideas of brutality the South still struggles with, something like xenophobia.

This behavior of South Africa has tutored us so many things, enough to bring out our machetes and riffles against the country but the brilliancy of a continent that I AM MY BROTHER’S KEEPER that they had turned down must be upheld here in Nigeria. What they had forgotten is that brotherhood is greater than our joint singular passion; it is a joint force of love and peace but how too soon they forget good behavior.

Many Nigerians could have desired a true retaliation born out of right passion. I understand that pain, I respect it because it is real, because it is true and because it is right but must not be executed for the principle of love to get it true meaning. South African jobs were not stolen; they were given out of free will to deserved and fitting Nigerians, a highly respected idea that South Africa is great till the power in the ill words of the Zulu king broke through our audacity that South Africa is exceptional.

Xenophobia for this occurrence is not perfect if it is a concentrated feeling of dislike, it would be accepted as a simple bad idea but also being the fear of people from other country, it is not. When South Africa has conquered has real fear, the white domino, is the fear of Nigerians on their shore quite a real one as well? There is nothing to fear in a black Nigerian foreigner that has lived with you without war or chaos in South Africa if not the fear of elders like the Zulu king that are still bent on breaking down a hopeful future Africa is struggling to build, announcing that love can’t take us anywhere great. This is not xenophobia, it is more than xenophobia, it is real brutality without a perfect explanation, a reopened sore of a continent, a generational mistake but we must be calm.

Nigerians must keep that ideal that riffle is not the best answer or hatred is an answer but true friendship and the world must know that our potentials are best achievable only through this. Hoping South Africa is still great enough to accept her mistakes and apologize.

Does The Exam Really End? – Pope Jay

For those who have seen the teachers of the basic schools prepare when they have promotional examinations and some other exams, doesn’t it ever push you to wonder when the exams all end? We all get that “ordinary sign board, I no go read” syndrome after writing most major exams and I have often wondered if this feat is quite achievable considering the fact that reading is more of a subconscious activity and we often confuse it with studying which is more conscious and voluntary.

So you write WASSCE, NECO SSCE, UTME and POST UTME and you start to feel as though your exam days are over but in actual sense if you pass these exams, you are headed to one of the “House of Exams” and if your “House of Exams” happen to be Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife…Congratulations! Your Work has just begun!

You finally graduate from school (either by crook or credit), and it seems as though the exams are over but then you either choose to further your education (go back to the “House of Exams”), get a job (where you will be examined directly or indirectly from time to time) or become an entrepreneur (where unseen factors are examining you, your failure/success then determine whether you are another Warren Buffet or just another passerby). To cut the long story short, the exams don’t end. The examiners, scope, venues and forms of the exam; these are the things that change most times.

Having established this fact, an inference that can be drawn is; if the exams don’t end, the learning cannot too (except a man wants to keep on failing). However, one beautiful fact about learning is that unlike studying it does not only entail reading and so if you are not much of a reader (which you should also work on), there are other ways to learn that may seem more “interesting”; listening to audio messages on the topic, seeing demonstrative videos etc. By doing these things, you can actually develop yourself on a topic without opening a lot of books and on the long run you are preparing for one exam you might write in the future.

Most, if not all, of us Great Ife students just concluded exams and are presently recuperating and recovering lost blood but I simply want to implore and admonish us that in the midst of our eating and drinking, we should try to learn whatever we can. That movie you saw today, the book you started yesterday, the radio show you listened to might be the basis of your exam tomorrow. BE PREPARED!

"Buhari's Restriction On AIT: Undemocratic, Unpresidential And Unacceptable"

By Solomon Tonye

My heart was filled with grief after reading the Vanguard Report titled "Hate campaign: Buhari fights back, bars AIT from covering his activities".

The question that stroke through my mind was "Can this be be justified in any sane democracy?".

It appears like Muhammadu Buhari is yet to come to terms with the present day democratic dispensation that he is bound to lead for the next for years or he is just acting naive. Perhaps the Daura-born General wants to bring back Decree 4 through the back door or he is out to fight any media organisation that he considers to be his adversary. Whatever be the case, Nigerians will not allow anyone to tamper with the freedom of media as provided by the 1999 Constitution.

President-elect Muhammadu Buhari need to be reminded that Sections 22 and 39 (1)(2) (quoted below) specifically made provision for Press Freedom.

Press Freedom In Nigeria's Constitution
Section 22 of the Nigerian 1999 constitution states that: “the press, radio, television and other agencies of mass media shall at all times be free to uphold the fundamental objectives contained in this chapter and uphold the responsibility and accountability of the government to the people.”

Section 39(1) States that "Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference.
Section 39(2) further went on to say "Without prejudice to the generality of subsection(1) of this section, every person shall be entitled to own, establish and operate any medium for the dissemination of information, ideas and opinion."

Buhari Should Remember His Words on Press Freedom
At his interactive session with members of Newspapers Proprietors of Nigeria (NPAN) and Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) on March 17, 2015, he pledged to uphold Press Freedom and to be a friend of the Press. In his own words...

“Concerning the Decree 4 of 1984, I have to assure you that the time for that is over. That was part of military administration and dictatorship, but I have also promised you that I am now a converted, and converted democrat. Therefore, I want to assure you that I am going to be a friend of the media and this time, I will work well with you as friends and partners in the development of the nation, and that is my promise to you.”

“I want to give you my full assurances that in this democratic dispensation, I will ensure that the Nigerian Constitution is upheld. This includes respect for the media, respect for the right to free expression and freedom of speech. I have said elsewhere that I cannot change the past. But I can change the present and the future. Dictatorship goes with military rule as do edicts such as Decree 4"

"...I will continue to promote the consolidation of democracy in our great country, Nigeria, by guaranteeing that the media’s freedom is not compromised in any way. I give you my full assurances that the Nigerian media will be free under our APC government.”.

The Unfortunate AIT Restriction
It is a unfortunate that President-elect Muhammadu Buhari that claimed to be a "reformed democrat" throughout the electioneering period will take the ignoble decision of preventing AIT from covering his activities even before taking oath of office. It is also unfortunate that the man that pledged to be a friend of the media will issue restricting order on a law abiding corporate citizen and a legally recognise media house. Buhari is expected to treat all members of the Media in the most appropriate manner. He should remember that the rights of the media as enshrined in the Constitution is not subject to change via Presidential desire. If he hasn't been told, he should be aware that his restriction on AIT is undemocratic and can never be tolerated in any sane democracy. If the President-elect has anything against AIT, he should seek redress in court. He may not like AIT as a media outfit but he should allow them conduct their duties unfettered as long as they operate within the ambit of the law.

Finally, let me remind President-elect Muhammadu Buhari that Nigerians are looking up to him to fulfil his numerous electoral promises. We will not tolerate any form of impunity or "executive rascality" whether from him(as President) or from any officer of his incoming government.

God Bless Nigeria

SMS: The Pain Or The Shame -Pope Jay

SMS: The Pain Or The Shame -Pope Jay

 Image result for oau ife

 One of the traditions of the Students of the great Ife that has endured the times is the Systematic/Scientific/Serious Maximum Shishi simply known as SMS; the SMS is a form of punishment in which the person or people involved in the crime is/are “paraded” around the halls of residence most times beaten at each hall or at intervals in the journey. This punishment is usually the consequence of quite a number of crimes on campus ranging from Physical assault, rape to even petty theft to mention a few.

  Since my entry into this great citadel of learning and culture, I have disagreed with this punishment. I have only seen it as a form of jungle justice only justified by the idea that our predecessors had not deemed it fit to scrap this violent act. However on reading George R.R Martins’ fifth sequel in the Song of Ice and Fire book series whose movie is popularly known as “The Game of Thrones”, I saw a form of punishment that was somewhat similar to our very own SMS: Queen Cersei’s Walk of Shame. In this form of punishment, the criminal who in the book’s context was Queen Cersei walked a particular distance naked and the people of the town (King’s landing) though not allowed to touch her made jest and threw different things at her.

On Wednesday, 15th of April, a thief was caught in Angola Hall. The case was a spectacular one because the thief and his preferred victim were actually the best of friends. I would summarize the event in a story;

  Ade and Sola were very close friends; they met at tutorial centre  while both preparing for the entrance exams of the Obafemi Awolowo University and both eventually gained admission to study English and Public Administration respectively. Ade got accommodation in Angola Hall and Sola in ETF hall but perhaps due to the serene nature of ETF and the more liveliness of Angola, Sola was almost always at Angola. In fact, he became more of an “Angolan” than most legal occupants of Angola.

In the early parts of March, Sola lost his phone when he travelled home and as time and true investigation would later unfold he then decided to steal his friend’s phone and Laptop. When caught, he later claimed that he did this because his friend made jest of him when he lost his phone. Ade who was very close to heaven after losing these valuables did not lose faith.
  He continued to search and at a point wanted to try out a more traditional approach (“ti ese ile bo” as the yorubas would say) in his search. Things however took a miraculous turn when on Wednesday, 15th April 2015 Angola Hall’s Chairman elect, Ekiti as he is popularly known, took up the case; politely demanding statements from the room mates and further conducting searches. It was one of this searches that led them to Sola’s room in ETF where they were to search his bags, Sola however in his cleverness led them to search another man’s bags making them believe that they were his. The truth caught up with him when the rightful owner of the bags saw them and challenged them, eventually showing them Sola’s bag where the valuables were recovered.

  I learnt that he was dealt with appropriately at the level of the Students Union Building but where my confusion came was when it got to the point of tradition taking its course in form of the SMS; the ones handling the case made us know that he couldn’t withstand any more beating as his health had deteriorated drastically and this I agreed with but where I didn’t quite agree was the part where he wasn’t made to suffer the shame that came with stealing.
  Over time, I have actually come to see that SMS as it were isn’t just about the physical pain and just like in George Martin’ s book; the SMS is our Walk of Shame. Showing the thief’s face to the public, people shaking heads as he was paraded, the whispers whenever he walked by thereafter… these were integral parts of the punishment.
 Having debated with quite a number of people about the SMS over time, I have seen that it may not be entirely removable from the OAU students’ community but perhaps we could adjust the Modus Operandi of this generationally handed down weapon against crime and social vices, perhaps we could make it less Violent and More Psychological; after all we are the

"Buhari Has Drawn The Battle-Line With South-East, South-South" — Intersociety

There is urgent need for the leadership of the All Progressives Congress to ferry and register its President-Elect, Retired Major General Muhammadu Buhari, for intensive training at the National Democratic Institute based in Massachusetts Avenue in Washington DC, USA or its equivalent elsewhere in overseas. This public call of ours is of uttermost public importance following blunders inherent in Mr. Buhari’s recent public comments following his presidential emergence in the highly divisive and ethnicised presidential poll. The President-Elect’s comments are also found to be highly ethnical, divisive, sectional, vindictive, undemocratic and unfriendly to rule of law and due process. The totality of these is against the spirit and letters of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, which the President-Elect will swear to uphold, abide by and enforce at all times come 29th May 2015.

Apart from promising Nigerians heaven and earth when sworn in, the President-Elect also completely lacks democratic pedigree needed to blend and bind and smoothly govern highly multi ethno-religiously divided country called Nigeria. For instance, it is correct to say that the President-Elect is notoriously ignorant of the sanctity of the ballot box and the need to respect and uphold same at all times. Till date, the President-Elect has not ceased in making provocative, divisive and vindictive remarks against the electoral decisions of Nigerians who voted for political parties other than his APC particularly the voters of the South-East and the South-South geopolitical zones. He is also very bitter and unhappy with the pattern of voting in Lagos State where his party – APC – was given a hot chase by his opponent party – PDP – with difference of 160,000 and 150,000 votes in favour of his party against his opponent party in the Presidential/National Legislative (792,000 votes for APC & 632,000 for PDP) and the Governorship/State Legislative polls (811,000 votes for APC & 659,000 for PDP) respectively.

The President-Elect must have expected a one party voting pattern in Lagos State in total disregard to the irrevocable rights of the citizens of Nigeria to vote freely and conscientiously not minding the ethno-religious backgrounds of their preferred candidates. Mr. Muhammadu Buhari has also continuously made highly negative references to the voting and its patterns in “the South” particularly the South-East and the South-South geopolitical zones. Each time he speaks, he describes the voting in the area as “a sham” on account of the massive rejection of his APC by the people of the two zones. In his recent press interviews to a number of foreign news agencies including the BBC Hausa Service, he made same negative and provocative comments. In his interview last Saturday (11th April) after his voting in Daura, he singled out for extensive attacks the South-South and the Southeast including the states of Edo, Rivers and Imo where his party governs no thanks to defection (in Rivers and Imo states).

The President-Elect’s perceived primordial sense of reasoning and judgment totally makes it very difficult for him to pause and ask: “Why are the people of the South-South and the South-East both home and outside rejecting my party and candidacy at polls and how can they be pacified for the sake of united, purposeful and prosperous Nigeria?”

It is extremely important to state here that those gifted and equipped to govern well in multi ethno-religious democracy should fundamentally x-ray and see the electoral decisions of the ethnic nationalities against them as early warning signals that must be bottled and removed from transforming into triggers of intractable socio-value conflict and other disturbances now or in future.

Conversely, under the President-Elect and its party, the reverse is grossly the case. For instance, while the two referenced polls in the South-East and the South-South zones are “a sham” in the eyes and perception of the President-Elect and his Party – APC; those held in the North are seen by them as “very credible”. In Mr. Muhammadu Buhari’s interview under reference, he saw nothing wrong in the polls held in the North, but saw everything wrong in those held in the South. That millions of voters in the North who voted in the two polls are under-age children do not amount to poll rigging in the eyes and perception of the President-Elect and his party; likewise other widespread complaints of electoral malpractices in his zone and the South made against his party and its agents.

In a recent interview with the Channel’s Television, the out-going governor of Kano State, Mr. Musa Kwankwaso, admitted that “Almajiris” (millions of uncared and abandoned children in the North) were used to vote out President Goodluck Jonathan.” Despite the fact that the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act of 2010 totally ban and forbid children under the age of 18 years from voting, the likes of the President-Elect sees nothing wrong in it criminally, morally and socially. The international observers have also turned blind eyes over the issue and concentrated in the South. The Northern political leaders including the President-Elect appear worried over efforts to educate and develop the “Almajiris” and prefer using them for political violence and roguish and illegitimate voting for the purpose of grabbing democratic powers. This can be inferred from Gov Kwankwaso’s statement under reference.

In Rivers State, over one million, four hundred thousand votes went to the opponent party (PDP) of the President-Elect while a paltry number went to his party – APC following the referenced Presidential poll. As expected, the President-Elect and his party described it as “a sham and massive rigging”. Again, in the governorship poll held in the state, another one million plus votes went to the party opposing the APC and the same labeling rented the air. Rivers State is a state under APC control by defection with all security apparatus under its fold. The referenced state’s out-going governor ascended to governorship through judicial coronation. The State as APC State by defection; is also reported to have bankrolled recent APC State and national polls owing to its status as the richest oil state in Nigeria. Lagos State is also said to be the second APC sponsor state. It is important to state here that the loss of the two polls in Rivers State by the President-Elect and his party-APC is likely to go beyond allegations of widespread rigging.

The President-Elect and his party-APC are also very intolerant, undemocratic and alarmist. Their constant reference to poll results where they lost as “sham” and “widely rigged” is not only a case in point, but also despicable and condemnable. For instance, when the President-Elect and his APC was in a verge of winning the presidential election, incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan called and congratulated him and conceded defeat; when Mr. Samuel Ortom of APC was in a verge of winning the Benue State gubernatorial election, incumbent Gov. Gabriel Suswan of PDP called and congratulated him in advance.

When Mallam Nasir El-Rufai of APC was in a verge of winning the Kaduna State gubernatorial election, incumbent Gov. Mukhtar Yero of PDP called and congratulated him in advance; when Mr. Bindo Mohammed Jibrilla of APC was in a verge of winning the Adamawa State governorship poll, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu of PDP who came third, conceded defeat and congratulated him; when incumbent Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State and his APC was in a verge of winning the governorship poll, former Governor Alao-Akala of LP called and congratulated him in advance; when incumbent Gov. Ibukunle Amosun was in a verge of winning the Ogun State governorship poll, Mr. Gboyega Isiaka of PDP called and congratulated him in advance.

Conversely, when Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of PDP won the Enugu State's gubernatorial election, Mr. Okey Ezea of APC called for cancellation of the results on account of alleged malpractices; when incumbent Gov. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo of PDP won the Gombe State governorship the APC supporters burnt down an Emir’s Palace; when Sen. Gyang Pwajok of PDP was taken an early lead in the Plateau State governorship poll, Mr. Simon Lalong of APC, who eventually won, called for outright cancellation of the poll; when Mr. Udom Emmanuel of PDP won the Akwa-Ibom State governorship poll with 996,000 votes, Mr. Umana Umana of APC who scored 89, 000 votes called for cancellation of the entire election.

Further, when Mr. Nyesom Nwike of PDP was in a verge of winning the Rivers State governorship poll, incumbent Gov. Rotimi Amechi called the election a sham and demanded for outright cancellation of the entire exercise; when Gov. Peter Ayodele Fayose and his PDP swept most, if not all the seats in the State House of Assembly in Ekiti State, APC cried foul and alleged malpractices and called for cancellation of the poll; and when Gov. Olusegun Mimiko and his PDP won majority seats in the Ondo House of Assembly, the APC rejected the outcome and called for cancellation of the exercise. This is just to mention but a few.

In all, the truth about the just held 2015 general elections in Nigeria is that while the projected explosion of widespread violence was avoided owing to political maturity and civility of Igbo race and the country’s minority ethnic nationalities that were demographically and systematically rigged; the referenced polls fundamentally failed the litmus test of international best practices. As it stands now, three governorship polls have been declared inconclusive owing to poll malpractices and INEC’s gross incompetence.

The polls generally speaking, have been marred by ethnic and religious divisions, political exclusion, mass disenfranchisement, under-age voting, ethno-religious balkanisation, scientific rigging using electronic technology configured along ethno-religious segregation, widespread rigging, violence, as well as impartiality and gross incompetence on the part of Independent National Electoral Commission. Truly speaking, the roguishness associated with the 2015 general elections in Nigeria is comparable in most respects with the 2007 general polls. The 2011 polls, other than its post poll violence; remains the best among the Nigeria’s highly tainted civilian-to-civilian polls of the immediate past.

In view of these, therefore, we wish to state firmly that although the short-term negative outcomes or consequences of the 2015 general elections in Nigeria appeared bottled in terms of projected immediate large scale explosion of violence; there are still long term aspect that must be escorted and cocooned at all times. We seriously doubt the competence and statesmanship potentials of the President-Elect and his party in handling them.

For the President-Elect to handle the referenced long term triggers, he must be made to change his present vengeance or vindictive and primordialist dispositions. In view of his perceived lack of statesmanship, his Party-APC and its foreign backers must come to his rescue by offering him thorough tutorship in democratic principles including political tolerance, rule of law, respect for voting rights and sanctity of the ballot box, respect for civil liberties, due process and multi ethnic democratic governance and ethno-religious and cultural pluralism.

As the President-Elect, Mr. Muhammadu Buhari, ought to be a statesman and father of all to be able to govern smoothly, happily and prosperously a country like Nigeria, which has over 250 ethnic groups and multi religions to its credit. The President-Elect also ought to be fair and accommodating in his referenced public comments. Open exhibition of ethnic, sectional, religious and political disdain against other ethnic nationalities through unfair and primordialist public comments particularly directed against those that voted against him and his party; constitutes a political battle-line with far-reaching consequences both in short term and long terms. When a people feel threatened, culturally, economically and religiously, they can do anything to repel it no matter their size and geopolitical landscape.

The President-Elect ought to have congratulated all Nigerians for successfully voting the candidates and parties of their choice and conscience irrespective of their geopolitical landscapes and ethno-religious groupings. If he thinks that the 2015 general polls in Nigeria were rigged in whole or in part; he should have avoided making sweeping and inciting public comments and implored and allowed the rigged to seek their mandate recovery from poll tribunals.

Interestingly, in all his public comments, he did not see any foul play involving his party-APC in the referenced two polls. In other words, it is only the PDP and others, excluding the APC that rigged in the 2015 polls. The fact that some INEC returning officers with pricking conscience have publicly revealed how they were forced by APC chieftains in places like Oru East LGA of Imo State to write results in favor of their candidates including Gov Rochas Okoroacha; does not mean anything to the President-Elect or constitute rigging. Mr. Buhari’s condemnation of poll rigging should have been made across board including riggers in his party. Till date, the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who once revealed that “election that brought him into office was rigged” is still seen in many quarters as a conscientious statesman and a major contributor to Nigeria’s anti poll rigging therapy.

To avoid disasters of leadership hovering around the President-Elect, which may explode during his Presidency, we pray his party – APC – and its foreign backers in USA and Europe to quickly ferry the President-Elect to the National Democratic Institute in USA to be drilled and mentored in democratic governance and principles.

Interestingly, till date, there are no records of the President-Elect attending any local or international workshop, seminar or fellowship on civil governance, democracy and rights related issues. All his records started and ended with the military. As closed as China is in its politics, its President, Mr. Xi Jinping (62), who was born on 15th June 1953; attended the United States’ Department sponsored International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) (on democracy, good governance & rule of law) 29 years ago at the age of 34.

•Being text of a statement issued today in Onitsha by Intersociety, signed by Emeka Umeagbalasi (Board Chairman); Barr Uzochukwu Oguejiofor-Nwonu (Head, Campaign & Publicity Department); Barr Chiugo Onwuatuegwu (Head, Democracy & Good Governance Programme); and Barr Obianuju Igboeli, Head, Civil Liberties & Rule of Law Programme. 2015 General Elections; A Momentous Feat For Our Democracy

By David Adetula

2015 GENERAL ELECTIONS; A MOMENTOUS FEAT FOR OUR DEMOCRACY!

Congratulations to the people's General Muhammadu Buhari on his victory in the 2015 #NigeriaDecides. He has taught me and many other Nigerian youths the essence of resilience and doggedness in pursuit of success and excellence. I have been bothered and I remain bordered about the 'old wine in new skin' who surround #GMB. These ones are dangerous creatures in sheep clothings who are more than capable of turning Buhari against the masses in record time. Sai baba needs to be very careful!

Hmmm, I do not really know how best to describe President Goodluck Jonathan now but with all sincerity and honesty of heart, the much needed foundation for our democratic setting has been laid today. Big thanks to #PGEJ. Despite all odds, I will remember Jonathan for giving us relatively free & fair elections and passing the #FOI bill into law. These amongst many other things he gave us. I personally laughed when you said your ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian, but I was shocked when I heard he called the General even before the final result announcement. All I can say for now is God bless you Mr President and I wish you God's best in your future endeavour.

...and to the real victors of today, we Nigerians! I celebrate with my fellow patriots who gallantly stood by and remained undaunted in the agitation and pursuit for democratic manifestations. You voted and your votes counted real good for the very first time. Congratulations #Nigeria.

If there is a request I wish to make now from Nigerians this day, it is, that the feat of our democracy that has been achieved tonight must be fervently and jealously sustained by us at all cost. Let these leaders know that your Voter Card is now permanent. Like the Yorubas will say 'Pason ti a fi na iyale n be lori aja fun iyawo' meaning 'the cane we used in flogging the first wife is still on the ceiling for the second wife'.

Finally, I proudly join numerous Nigerians today to celebrate the success of our democracy. I now hope the preachers of division and violence in Nigeria in 2015 (including US) can now eat humble pie. I am indeed very glad we will start getting it right from now on.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
