There's More To Be Done: Newly Sworn Nassors President Charges Members of the Department

The National Association For Students Of Religious Studies, Obafemi Awolowo University chapter, has inaugurated new executive members to oversee the department's affairs for the 2022/2023 academic session.

In his inaugural address, the department's President, Comrade Akinnibi Miftahu Oyempemi, expressed his gratitude to the Nassorites for trusting him with the mandate to lead the department. He also showed appreciation to the department and past executives for their efforts in funding department activities and providing for students' needs. However, he emphasized that there is more work to be done.

He stated, "My fellow executives and I have made several promises to the students based on our manifestos, which I have titled the PROPELLER plan" Elaborating on the PROPELLER plan, he mentioned that it is centered on six agendas: Library Renovation, Freshers' Orientation, Religious Library Summit, Skill Acquisition Programs, Scholarship Provision, and Tutorials.

He further reaffirmed the executive members' commitment to an all-inclusive agenda for all students. He assured them that his fellow executive members would collaborate with all relevant units to ensure that students' voices are heard and that even the smallest complaints are addressed.

SayNoToFeeHike: Great Ife Students Demand

Amidst ongoing tensions and students' agitation over the past few weeks, which followed several inconclusive meetings between the university management and representatives of the Great Ife Students, Great Ife Students took to the University campus gate on Tuesday, October 3rd, to stage a peaceful protest. 

The primary basis behind this demonstration was the recent hike in school fees, with students demanding a substantial 50% reduction in the fees set by the university management.

During this protest, the students of Great Ife were observed brandishing placards bearing slogans such as #SayNoToFeeHike, #Let the Poor Breathe, #FeeMustFall, and #You paid 9k, You want Students to pay 90k, among others, in a collective display of their discontent.

According to the report, the Director of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department, acting as the representative of the Vice-Chancellor, took the initiative to address the assembled students, acknowledging their concerns...

In his statement, he disclosed that the ICT department currently faced a staffing shortage attributable to the prevailing 'Japa' phenomenon, which had adversely impacted the department's ability to expeditiously process Post UTME examinations. Consequently, this situation had led to delays in activating the installment payment feature on the student portal.

It was reported that, the Director assured the gathered Great Ife students that the installment payment feature would be fully operational by day's end, whereas, the Great Ife Students' primary demand, which is a 50% reduction from the initially proposed price, remains unaddressed by the university management...

Great Ife SRC Resumes From Recess: Conclude Constitution Of Standing Committees

The Great Ife Students' Union Students' Representative Council resumed from its recess after the Rt. Honourable Speaker Toheeb Ajadi announced to the Honourable members at the late hours of Friday, 18th November 2022 at the Awolowo Cafeteria should go on recess due to security reasons and interruption of power supply.

Recall it was earlier reported by OAUPEEPS News Agency that the SRC constituted the Budgetary and Finance, Transportation Management Commission at the floor of the house.

Consequently, the house resumed from its recess at the late hours of Saturday, 19th November 2022 to constitute the standing committees and the Judicial Council in accordance with the provision of the Great Ife Students'Union Constitution. 

The resumption of the recess which experience a low turn up by honourable members of the house received series of point of orders and reactions raised by honourable members of the parliament against the honourable Speaker of the house of being impartial in the proceedings of the house in accordance with the section 10 sub-section 4 of the Great Ife Students'Union Constitution. 

The house experienced a major setback as honourable members of the house were seen throwing shade at each other.  Another major setback was the agitation of equal representation of all faculties in the constitution of standing committees. The agitation which was powerfully spearheaded by a honourable Radical was faulted by honourable lev that the agitation is not backed up constitutionally.

However, the house proceeded to the constitution of the standing committee and the Judicial Council.

Great Ife SRC Goes On Recess Amidst Constitution Of Standing Committees

The Great Ife Students' Representative Council in its first business sitting for the 2021/2022 parliamentary session which held at the late hours of Friday, 18th November 2022 at the Awolowo Cafeteria constituted the Budgetary and Finance Committee, Transport Committee amidst other various standing committees which were to be constituted in accordance with the Great Ife Students' Union Constitution.

Junior Chamber International OAU: Induction and Award Ceremony

The Junior Chamber International Nigeria, Obafemi Awolowo University Chapter inducted new members into the organization on Saturday 19th of March 2022. The event started by exactly  3:48pm with the recitation of the creed by both the inductees and members of JCI as a whole. The M.C of the occassion, Cooperate Emcee invited the dignitaries to the high table, he then as usual lightened the mood in the hall , after which was followed by a welcome speech by the president of JCIOAU Miss Feyisayo Awopetu. 

Mrs Oluwatoyin Atanda, the keynote speaker of the occasion graced the occasion virtually, she duly apologised for her absence from the induction. She mentioned a lot of things on JCI to advice and motivate the inductees to work harder. She stated “ JCI Nigeria will be 65 years old this year" what a wonderful speech she gave 

Professor S.S Okoya, the staff adviser came up and he stated how he was excited about the induction of new members into the association. He also said he was happy about the current president being a female due to the fact that he want females at the arms of affairs. He ended by congratulating the inductees.

Cooperate Emcee came up with up with more fun activities and giveaway to make the audience lively. A beautiful spoken words performance was presented by All I Memunat. The Erstwhile President of JCIOAU; Femi Adeyemo started off his speech with a brief story about himself while asking the inductees about what made them join JCI. Shortly after, the Induction started with the inductees who were well dressed coming out to recite the Creed and also read a section of the constitution.

Prof Lara Oradiay who was duly represented by Dr Adekoya admonished the new members to ensure they carry the roles of JCI; impact lives and give back to the society. She ended the speech with a charge for them saying “Be different like Daniel in the Bible”. Soon after Awards were offered to outstanding members of the association by the president. The Board members were introduced to the audience and the president gave vote of thanks

Breaking: Obafemi Awolowo Sets To Host Pre-Nuga Games

The Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) organizes university-level sports events in Nigeria. It hosts an interuniversity sports competition called the University Games. The first NUGA games were held at the University of Ibadan in 1966. Presently, there are over eighty universities as members of NUGA, both private and public owned.

NUGA approves fifteen different sporting events at the University Games: track and field, badminton, basketball, chess, cricket, handball, hockey, judo, soccer, squash, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, and volleyball, after which the games have grown overtime to sixteen

However, just like other competition, there's always a preliminary stages whereby teams come together to play and in order to them to be qualified for the main event. 

Obafemi Awolowo University, set to host pre-Nigeria university games PRENUGA for Zone C. The tournament which will feature 16 games and 10 different universities. 

According to OAU Student Union director of Sports elects, he stated that "Obafemi Awolowo University will be hosting this year's edition of the Pre-Nuga games, slated to commence on Sunday, 13th of February, 2022 and end on the 16th of February, 2022. We'll be hosting the likes of

FUTA, AAUA, Uniosun, Elizade University, JABU, OUI, Redeemers University, Adeleke University".

Speaking to our Correspondent, Oluwanoni said OAU will be participating in all the sixteen sport of the Nuga games: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Football, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Scrabble, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis and Volleyball.

OAUpeeps gathered that the Pre-Nuga is  meant to  determine the institution which will be representing the zone in the official NUGA games tournament.

Strike: ASUU OAU Blows Hot, Vows To March Up With VC, Ogunbodede.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Obafemi Awolowo University Branch on Thursday, 3rd February, 2022 held a solidarity congress at the First Bank Lecture Theatre to discuss the situation surrounding the strike action. Recall that the Union had earlier this week declared an indefinite strike to protest the unpaid Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) for deserving members of the union.

In an interview with the Chairperson of ASUU, OAU Branch, Adeola Egbedokun, he stated that the Ibadan, Lagos, Akure and Benin zones came to the ASUU OAU congress in solidarity to fight injustice and maladministration in the university.

The Chairperson expressed further that "the Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede has not seen anything, this is just the beginning of the strike because the Vice Chancellor had declared a war and we would march up with him". The ASUU chairperson affirms that the strike is a local strike supported by the national body of ASUU.

When asked why the strike is peculiar, he replied that the Vice Chancellor has refused to listen to what ASUU said regarding the earned academic allowance. He added that "this is not the first time we will paid EAA in many Universities" and you can cross-check from other universities that the money was disbursed around 11th or 12th of December 2021 which 98% have paid before the end of 2021. "It is only OAU that has refused to pay till now owing to the fact that the VC is a member of an illegal group called CONUA".

The Chairperson further stated that anytime ASUU meets with the Vice Chancellor, he always question their actions as against CONUA's. He added that ASUU fought for the money and the Union should determine how the money should be disbursed.

He said that disbursement of the Earned Academic Allowance has always been based on the template submitted by ASUU, "so if the Vice Chancellor wants to give money to a union not known by the law he should use the Non-ASUU share". The Chairperson expressed that the VC should share ASUU's Earned Academic Allowance to the Union members.

The Chairperson said that on 20th January, 2022 ASUU held a meeting with the Audit Unit where the Vice Chancellor told them he was going to take computation for verification and since that day there has not been any official communication or documentation from the Vice Chancellor on the outcome of the verification that was carried out. He added that the office of the Vice Chancellor should be more responsible in communicating officially to every stakeholder in the University.

When asked to react on what the University Management said that academics was going smoothly on campus and does it means that the impact of the strike was not felt. The chairperson expressed that "no lecture is going on on OAU campus and whatever the information the University is feeding the public is all lies and they are deceiving parents". He urges parents to visit the university to assert the level of destruction the university administration has brought upon the university".

When challenged that some classes held lectures, the chairperson stated that "any class that held is been organised by the cohort of the Vice Chancellor".

ASUU members after the congress took to the roads and academics environment and academics environment of OAU campus, chanting in protest of their unpaid Earned Academic Allowance.

Lectures Still Continues, No Cause For Alarm: OAU Management React To ASUU Strike

The management of obafemi Awolowo has reacted to the strike embarked on by the Academic Staff Union Of Universities OAU Chapter.

Recall that it was earlier reported on OAU Peeps News Agency on 31st of January 2022 how the Academics Staff Union Universities Obafemi Awolowo Chapter embarked on an indefinite strike following the resolutions of an emergency congress. 

However in a statement issued by the University PRO, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, a copy of which was sent to OAU Peeps News Agency. In the statement, the management of the school has maintained the stand that lectures still continue amidst the class

STRIKE ACTION: LECTURES STILL ONGOING IN OAU, NO CAUSE FOR ALARM.

The attention of the Management of  Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, has been drawn to a circular issued by a section of the academic staff, ASUU, calling on its members to go on strike, beginning from Monday, 31st January, 2022. 

The University Management is using this medium to inform the general public, particularly our students, their parents or guardians, that overwhelming majority of the academic staff in OAU are NOT ON STRIKE neither do they have the intention of going on any strike action. In actual fact, lectures are on going and students are being attended to by lecturers in their respective departments.

A release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that in view of this, parents, guardians, alumni and friends of the University are assured of uninterrupted academic calendar, as our students are advised to go about their normal academic activities because there is no cause for concern or alarm.

In addition, the University Management wishes to appreciate majority of our lecturers who have the interest of the students at heart, and have been teaching and attending to students.

OAU Management Make Move To End Strike, Summon Academics Staff To Emergency Meeting

Following the declaration of indefinite strike embarked upon by the members of Academic Staff Union of Universities,ASUU, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU chapter, the management of the institution has summoned the presence of the academics staff of ASUU OAU Chapter to a meeting scheduled to hold on  Tuesday 1st of Febuary 2022 to clear up the lingering issues at hand. 

Recall that it was earlier reported on OAU Peeps News Agency on 31st of January 2022 how the Academics Staff Union Universities Obafemi Awolowo Chapter embarked on an indefinite strike following the resolutions of an emergency congress. 

However, the management of Obafemi Awolowo University has made move by summoning the academics staff of the university to an emergency meeting through a memorandum which was signed by the acting director in the office of the vice-chancellor, Isaac Adejuwon and written on the instance of the vice-chancellor, to invite all academics staff of the university to an emergency meeting with the university management holding on Tuesday, 1st February, 2022.

Great Ife Students' Union Speaks On Security Issues, Matters Arising And Steps The Union Is Taking

The Great Ife Students' Union  Central Executive elect led by Comr. Olayiwola Folahan Festus popularly known as Reform has taken action regarding security issues and other matters arising on campus. 

In a Press Release  from the office of the PRO-elect, the President-elect addressed students in the various hall of residence on an announcement that was made on Sunday 30th of January 2021. 

Speaking to the students in different halls of residence, the President-elect called on all students, both fresh and returning, to be more security conscious. 

He further charged the fresh students not to yield to the antics of thieves and perpetuators of other social vices by being more security conscious and assured the students of the readiness of the union officers-elect to swifty intervene in any issue that affects their welfare.

Furthermore, speaking on the welfarism of students, he said consultation are being made on the issue of water scarcity  with a sense of urgency so that adequate water supply is restored as soon as possible. Students were however implored to exercise patience as the issue is being resolved , as it is expected that there will be water supply in the affected Halls very soon. 

OAU Management Serves Students Letters Over Protest

The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University, in a response to the peaceful protest staged by the students of the school has served query letters to students who were considered "leaders of the struggle".

 

Recall that the peaceful protest was staged as a result of the death of a student, Miss Adeshina Aishat who died at the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital, Ile Ife, where she was referred to by the university’s health centre. The Management thereafter shutdown the school on October 2nd, 2021 while exams were ongoing for over a month and was later reopened November 5th for students to finish their examinations after the committee constituted by the school to carry out investigations submitted their reports.

A viral Facebook post shows a query letter dated 7th of January stating the offence supposedly committed by the students during the protest and has been given 48 hours to respond to query stating reasons why he shouldn’t be punished for the alleged offence.

Speaking to the recipient of the viral query letter, Bolade Omoyemi, a student of the departments Dramatic Arts said “ I was not at the protest ground on the first day the protest started because I got to know about it late, but I joined the second day and I have not done anything that can warrant a query letter from the school”. 

However, claims that some students in the Faculty of Law and the Departments of English and Literary Studies have also been served query letters was debunked as the concerned students confirmed that they haven't received any official letters from their respective faculties and departments so they don’t have a say on the current issue.

Also, Anonymous sources revealed that some of the elected student union officers have also been served query letters. A "student leader" who doesn’t want his name in prints affirmed that the query letter has been served to them. In his opinion, the query letter is an avenue for them to defend themselves before any further steps will be taken by the school on the issue.

Meanwhile, the query letters served to the students are not well received by the student community who see the actions taken by the school as downplaying the effort of students in fighting for rights and common interest of their colleagues.

Angola Hall Of Residence Executives Elects Caught And Parade A Thief For Stealing

Barely days after the resumption of fresh students into the various hall of residences, the Angola hall of residence executives elects under the leadership of the hall chairman-elect: Timilehin Samuel popularly known as S&T apprehended a thief in the early hours of January 10, 2022. 

Speaking to our correspondent, the Chairman-elects of Angola hall of residence narrates how the thief was apprehended. 

In his report, he said the apprehended thief claimed to be a graduate of this institution but was not. He was apprehended around 2 am on January 10, 2022. 

The apprehended thief was said to have come in through the main gate entrance of Angola hall and went directly to block J and K and stole about four different phones and power banks. He was however apprehended with the collective hands of the Angola hall of residence in conjunction with the security men in Angola hall in the thick forest of Angola hall of residence. 

Sending messages to the occupant of Angola of hall, the General Secretary of Angola hall of residence sends message to Angolans to keep their belongings very well. 

The apprehended thief has however been paraded by Angola hall executive elects

 

OAU Vice-Chancellor Attacked By Hoodlums In Ife

The Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi  Awolowo University , Professor Eyitayo Ogunbodede was attacked on Monday by some hoodlum in Ife community who launched a violent attack on him and his team of entourage. 

According to Nigeria Tribune, the trouble started when the vice-chancellor led his team to the institution's land which was said to have been taken over by some Ife community, but his intention to assess the occupation part of the land proved abortion as the visibly charged Ife youths went berserk and ordered every occupant of the vehicles in the vice-chancellor entourage to remain in their vehicles or be killed. 

With the vice-chancellor in entourage were members of the Nigeria Union of Journalist(NUJ), the chief security officer of the institution, the university public relation officer, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, management of the institution amongst other  

One of the security men of the institution has reportedly been matched by the hoodlums who shot sporadically into the air to scare the university community members. 

Reacting the the incident, the vice-chancellor of the institution, Professor Ogunbodede, condemned the development and described it as inhuman but however said the institution would not cede the land to the community. 

He however said the institution would always ensure that peace reigns between the university and members of the community.

OAU Management Speaks On Increase In Tuition Fees

The community of Obafemi Awolowo University was thrown into confusion at late hours of December 16th 2021 over the release of the increase in the tuition fees to be paid by returning students. 

Recall that the fees for the fresh students who will be resuming for the new session 2021/2022 academics session were increased. 

However, speaking to OAUpeeps News Agency correspondent in a phone conversation, the PRO of the School Mr Olanrewaju Abiodun urged students, parents and guardians to disregard the unfounded rumour of an attempt to increase the tuition fees for the returning students.

Speaking to our correspondent concerning the release, he said "I'm not aware of that and have not been beeped when I'm beeped, i will get back to you" 

Giving Back To The Union: Ay-Fab Promise To Replace National Flag At SUB

Former Faculty of Arts President Adewale Ayo Waliyu popularly known as Ay-Fab has promise to replace  the National flag at SUB in celebration of his convocation. 

Ay-Fab who will be graduating from the department of History made this known to the Electoral committee chairman FM Castro who made this known via his WhatsApp status 

Speaking to our correspondent, Ay-Fab said the electoral committee chairman met him on the  evening of Wednesday 8th of December 2021 and said it jokingly to him that the National Flag at SUB should be changed and since it is for the Union and the God can cover it, he decided to take it upon himself.
