EXCLUSIVE: How A 200 Level OAU Student Was Murdered

A 200 level student of Obafemi Awolowo University, identified as Abiodun Babalola  has been reportedly murdered by armed robbers during a robbery attack in Ile-Ife at the early hours of Saturday. 22nd December, 2018.

OAU Peeps News Agency gathered that the victim, Late Abiodun Babalola  is a student from the department of Management & Accounting ,Faculty of Administration &  popularly known a TERMUR

It was gathered that the robbery attack which led to his murder occurred off-campus at Adam& Eve Hostel.

Speaking with OAU Peeps News Agency, Mr Funso Adegboye, the Ile-Ife Area commander Police  confirmed the incidence. He stated there was a robbery attack, the victim was injured ,rushed to the hospital but eventually gave up the ghost.

OAU Peeps New Agency gathered that the victim is not a resident of the hostel but slept in the hostel on Friday to participate in group discussion meant for SSC 202 Test scheduled to hold  the following day,Saturday,22nd December 2018.


According to an eye witness who pleaded anonymity , he stated that few minutes after the armed robbers had gained entrance  to the room , an argument occurred perhaps an interception with the robbers. In this process, he was hit with a cutlass on the head.

The eyewitness further stated that the victim should have survived it but a lot of irregularities played  after the incidence caused his death.

He stated that the irregularities started when there was no vehicle or patrol van to take him from the hostel to any nearby hospital.

" Both the Nigeria Police and the OAU security officials complained of faulty patrol van'' He emphasized.

He stated that the victim was first taken by a bike before the University Chief Security officer brought his private car to pick the Victim.

OAU Peeps News Agency gathered that the victim was first taken to the university health centre before being transfered to Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex around 3am.

It was confirmed the health officials at the OAUTHC didn't treat the case as an emergency as they kept asking for frivolities like money for blood,etc which left the victim to be unattended to for more than 5hours.

OAU Peeps gathered that the victim was finally attended to after  8am before he gave up the ghost around 9am on Saturday.

It will be recalled that this is not the first case of students not being attended to on emergencies at the university teaching hospital.

In a release by the executive council of  Nigeria Universities Accounting Students Association,OAU which was obtained by OAU Peeps News Agency, the executive council stated that it was a bad occurrence to have lost one of the archetypes in the association. They stated the  victim was a man of distinguished humanity before his  death & concluded by sending condolences to all affected friends & family of the Late Abiodun Babalola


Speaking extensively with the University Public Relations Officer, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju stated that it is a sad incident to the university community at large especially towards  this festive Period of the year.

In his words;" The university Vice Chancellor, his management team & on behalf of the university council,we are all sad to lose a student of the institution especially towards this festive period of the year".

  The University Public Relations Officer  thanked everyone that tried all their  possible best to save the life of the victim  and further added that this is not a right time to shift blame on anyone for the loss of the student stating that " Man Proposes but God disposes ".

He concluded by praying for the family and friends of Late Abiodun Babalola for God to console them and bear the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss.

Team Empower Emerges as Winner of OAU HULT PRIZE

Team Empower has emerged winners of the Hult Prize Oncampus Event in Obafemi Awolowo Univerisity along with runner ups Team Vanguard and Team Luminous.

Among 93 registered teams, 47 teams were shortlisted to pitch their business ideas solving youth unemployment to a panel of 15 Judges. Team Empower emerged the overall winner of the competition, closely followed by the runner ups Team Vanguard and Team Luminous.

Empower Health aims to be the largest cloud storage of medical information in Africa by providing a platform for accessibility of health records across medical institutions in developed and underdeveloped communities, creating over 10,000 jobs for youths in Nigeria by 2024 in the process.

The winning teams will go on to represent Obafemi Awolowo University at the regional finals(semi-finals) of the competition to get into the Hult Prize Accelerator and to get a chance to win the grand prize of $1,000,000.

BREAKING: OAU ‘sex-for-marks’ Lecturer, Akindele Sentenced To Two Years In Prison

A former lecturer of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Prof. Richard Iyiola Akindele, who was dragged to court for demanding sex to pass one of his students, Monica Osagie, on Monday was sentenced to two years in prison.

Akindele had earlier changed his plea from ‘not guilty’ to ‘guilty.’

The prosecutor, Mr. Shogunle Adenekan said all parties in the matter have reached a plea bargain and pleaded for a suspended sentence for the accused.

Ajayi Oluwafemi Emerges As NAOSS-OGUN President-Elect

Ajayi Oluwafemi, a student of the department of sociology and anthropology,faculty of social sciences  has emerged as the president-elect of the National Association of Ogun State Students ,OAU Chapter. This was made known to OAU Peeps News Agency through a release signed by the Electoral Commission of the aforementioned association.

The election which was held last thursday at Moremi Hall Car Park  saw Ajayi Oluwafemi Popularly known as EFEM CASTRO emerging as the president-elect against his opponent known as Oyeyemi Abass who is a law student & Popularly known as BAZZMAN

Ajayi Oluwafemi got 143 votes against Oyeyemi Abass who could only pull 75 votes out of the 232 Used Ballot papers by the Electoral Commission

Speaking with OAU Peeps News Agency after his victory, President-Elect Ajayi Oluwafemi  thanked the electorates for trusting & voting him in.

""The mandate given to me will not be abused.  I will need their maximum support in discharge of my duties as stated in my manifesto. The executives are not complete without them. In this administration, NAOSS will be for all , we will try and impact them and leave memories with them."" He further added

However, the runner up for the Presidential position,Oyeyemi Abass has  stated that he is not happy with the electioneering process by the Electoral commission.

 While speaking with OAU Peeps News Agency, he stated that the election was rigged. He further stated that some non-indegene of Ogun state voted in the election.

However, the Electoral Commissioner, Honourable Adebisi Ibitokun  negated what the runner up of the Presidential position stated.

While speaking with OAU Peeps News Agency , he stated  that  the commission  conducted a free and fair election.
"How is that possible?? Does that means NON OGUN students has Ogun state Certificate  of Origin,  Ogun State Birth certificate ,NAOSS Ogun OAU CHAPTER Annual Due receipt, jamb admission letter showing Ogun state as state of Origin. "" He further stated.

The Electoral commission Chairman added that there was no irregularities from the electoral commission before, during and after the election.

While reacting to the allegation by his runner up, President-Elect Ajayi Oluwafemi stated that his runner up reaction is natural and  that won't stop him from holding BAZZMAN as a brother and a friend.

 ""Abass oyeyemi is a friend and brother. He contested not because of power but his quest to serve humanity. The two of us cannot occupy the seat that's why one has to earn it and the other has to learn. He is not a looser. He congratulated me after the election.  My administration will be incomplete without him. "" Ajayi Oluwafemi concluded.

An Open Letter to OAU Vice-Chancellor

Mr. Vice-Chancellor Sir,
It is no gainsaying that I have always done all I could to engage you personally as regards happenings in the University community most especially issues relating to the well-being of students. As usual, I write you this letter with all sense of humility, patriotism and without any malice, bitterness, anger or personal antagonism despite the fact that on many occasions, you have repeatedly infringed on our fundamental rights as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as Amended), African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with some of us being victims of your high-handedness all in a bid to maintain a reasonable level of silence within the rank and file of students in the face of anomie we have found ourselves.

Sir, it is pathetic that upon your assumption of office as the Vice-Chancellor of the University with the belief that you were divinely anointed, you embarked on a dismal journey of silencing all form of opposition and subject a reasonable number of students into serious hardship in response to their refusal to be gagged. It is instructive to note that I write you this open letter as one who has cried out on many occasions on issues affecting students and staff of the University at great personal peril and the aim of this letter is to take this issue into the public space for the general public to be aware of the wave of illegality being blown on OAU campus and to also cause you to reverse your decision on the suspension of Students’ Union activities in the University which is against all known laws.


Sir, I have in the last two years of your administration studied you with keen interests and I have come to realise that you are basically testing the patience of the mass of students in the University thereby mistaking the silence of students as regards the appalling state of things to mean acquiescence which has caused you to act in scant regard for the dignity of students in the University community ranging from the suspension of students’ activists who dare to speak up without recourse to Section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as Amended) and Article 7 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.


In view of your past activities, most especially the way and manner you colluded with the deluded and paranoia administration of the last Union leadership, one can easily deduce that you intentionally acted the way you did in order to set the Union on the path of destruction. It would be recalled that I personally wrote to you during the course of the pandemonium caused by the #2.5million which you disbursed for the last Union executive without parliamentary ratification that you should cease disbursing money without parliamentary ratification in order for us not to descend to a state of anarchy and that you should investigate how the #2.5million was spent, but, it is so appalling that rather than yield to the content of the letter, you choose to disburse another tranche to the executive council till the fracas reached its peak.


It is very obvious that you have been able to escape public scrutiny through manipulation and mis-representation despite the fact that what we were bedeviled with as a Union were caused by you. It is a sad commentary on University administration, governance and democracy that despite the fact that the blind eyes you turned to the reality of the issues confronting the Union then caused us to be where we are today, you have, at the slightest opportunity advised students to keep praying for Union activities to be restored as if it is a spiritual dealing expected to fall from the heavens. This in itself is an insult on the collective intelligence of students in the University.


Sir, you must be reminded that the continued suspension of Union activities on campus is a derogation of our godly and Constitutionally recognized Right to Freedom of Association and Assembly which derogation is a contravention and an assault on the provisions of Article 9, 10 and 11 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act, 1981 a Treaty-turned-Act which does not accommodate derogation in any form and Section 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as Amended). As a matter of fact, based on the authority of the Supreme Court in Abacha V. Gani Fawehinmi and other plethora of cases, you cannot find any justifiable defense either in the provisions on derogation, Section 45 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as Amended) or in the powers conferred on the University management, Section 34 and other similar provisions of the University of Ife Law 1970 and Obafemi Awolowo University (Transitional Provisions) Act 1975 because of the doctrine of pacta sunt servanda.


Interestingly Sir, you would recall that you became the Vice-Chancellor of the University through the coordinated struggles of both students and staff of the University against the emergence of the former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayo Salami, but, it is quite embarrassing that your emergence has signaled a clampdown on dissent and students’ unionism from the suspension of Great Ife Students’ Union to the suspension of students’ activists to the extent that you employed a new method of suspending students’ activists (deactivation of e-portals) without being invited to face any panel which is a gross violation of the Right to Fair Hearing as provided for in Section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as Amended) and Article 7 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights as well as a plethora of High Court rulings deprecating such act based on the protection given to the principle of fair hearing and presumption of innocence of the accused.


Sir, it cannot be over-emphasised that the essence of students’ unionism on campus is to protect the interests of students and bring about radical change by consistently engaging those in the position of authority while proffering way-forwards to societal ills and most importantly, demanding for the proper funding of the educational sector, but, it is so shameful, preposterous and incredulous that you have always mistaken our demands for something else and also denied us the benefits of fair hearing despite the fact that the Constitution guarantees this right with numerous decisions of Courts affirming same without taking any sincere attempt to ever look at our grievances and also solve the problems that led to them in avoiding future occurrences.


Meanwhile, as the University’s Vice-Chancellor, you have continually poke a finger in the eye of the law while placing yourself high above the law neglecting the fact that the University itself is a creation of the law and is expected to act within the purview of the law. Ironically, you have consistently punished students that have chosen to act in total disregard for the strange laws that appear inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution being introduced in the University which include placing ban on the gathering of students and criminalising articles that do not suit your perception.


It is very important to note that by suspending Union activities on campus and describing the gathering of students as illegal, you have been able to show the extent to which your administration holds with disdain, the recognition of the fundamental rights of students in the University which is not expected in a University that prides itself as an incubator of knowledge. The irony of the suspension of Great Ife Students’ Union was that there was no need to suspend the Union, but, to simply punish those that were involved in the fracas as the suspension of the Union in itself is a clear violation of students’ right and this has also not stopped students from organising themselves to discuss issues as it affects them and to also interfere on issues relating to the general well-being of students which you have consistently answered by slamming students concerned with suspension.


Sir, you need not be reminded that Freedom of Association and Assembly, Freedom of Expression and Right to Fair Hearing are expressly internationally recognized rights, and, as re-echoed by the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, William Stuart Symington in October this year while delivering a convocation lecture at the University of Ilorin when he noted that injustice and disregard for the rule of law are worse than stealing of public funds, you are ordinarily painting a bad image of the University amongst the comity of Universities and you are basically at the edge of taking us back to the ugly days of the military where Vice-Chancellors would do everything possible to kill dissent and gag a larger percentage of students all in a bid to produce zombies as graduates.

Though, you may not take me serious because you have misrepresented some of us to be never-do-well which you have always echoed at different occassions, but, it is very important for me as a student who holds you in high-esteem and who have been adhering strictly to the University matriculation oath sworn to in good faith and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which is the groundnum ever since I was matriculated to write you this letter in order to intimate you that what you perceive as peace does not represent peace as a volcano has already being gathered within the rank and file of students in the University which might erupt and consume everyone sooner than later. It is interesting to note that students are gradually losing patience and in avoiding a situation whereby the academic calendar that is being stabilised by your administration would not be truncated, it is expected of you, Sir, to recognise and show respect for the rights of students in the University. Sir, we live by the Credo of the Spanish Civil War that; it is better to die on one’s feet than live on one’s knees. The truth remains that, as a student and like other students too, I am not comfortable with the situation of things in the University.

Sir, I have not written this to embarrass you or drag you into the mud, but, as a student who has exhausted all internal remedies, I write this with no expected verbal response but for you to see reason(s) to correct the irregularities in the University. I sincerely hope that this letter would meet you well and that, it would cause you to, as a matter of exigency, necessity and urgency recognise students’ rights as it is legally justifiable and expedient.

Strike: FG & ASUU Meeting Ends Inconclusive, Adjourned Till December 17

Another meeting between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) ended on Monday night without an immediate resolution of the dispute.

The meeting which held at the Federal Ministry of Labour was to find a lasting solution to the ongoing strike by the university lecturers.

At least four other meetings have been held between both parties before Monday’s since the strike commenced on November 4.

While addressing journalists, the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, said the meeting has been adjourned to December 17.

Mr Ngige said the federal government is taking all necessary steps to address ASUU’s demands.

Mr Ngige had earlier appealed to the striking lecturers to ensure that Monday’s dialogue yields results that will lead to ending the strike.

”The strike is five weeks old today and it is not in anybody’s interest. We will ensure the needful is done,” he said.

Meanwhile, the ASUU chairman, Biodun Ogunyemi, said the union will await the next adjournment date to see how far the federal government will deliver on its promises before it will take a decision on whether to suspend the industrial action.

The union embarked on the strike on November 4 over the poor funding of Nigerian universities and non-implementation of previous agreements by the government.

182 Bag First Class As OAU Holds 43rd Convocation Next Week

About 182 graduates will receive First Class degrees at the 43rd convocation of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, out of 13,492 graduating students.

The chairman of the ceremonial committee, Oluseye Bolaji, made the disclosure on Wednesday in Ile-Ife.

Mr Bolaji, a professor, said that the convocation would involve graduates of the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 academic sessions.

He added that the event will hold between December 11 and 14,2018

Mr Bolaji added that the convocation lecture entitled, “University Education in Nigeria: Revisiting the Ife Dream,” would be delivered by a retired professor of History and Second Republic senator, Banji Akintoye.

The committee chairman also said exhibition of research activities carried out in the faculties and units of the university would be unveiled as part of the activities during the convocation.

OAU wins First Bank-Sponsored Ethics Challenge

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has won the national finals of the 2018 Ethics Challenge of the CFA Society Nigeria sponsored by First Bank of Nigeria Plc.OAU emerged winner ahead of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and University of Nigeria (UNN), which came second and third respectively.

Speaking at the Gala Night and 2018 Charter Award Dinner of the CFA Society Nigeria where the winner of the competition that involved 15 universities was announced, the Society’s president, Banji Fehintola, commended First Bank Plc for supporting the contest.

Fehintola, while also thanking the bank for its unwavering commitment to ensuring entrenchment of ethics in the finance and investment sectors, said “ethics are important. They’re  the cornerstone of our industry and we wanted to pass this message on so three years ago, we started running the ethics challenge for university students.

We started with two; had seven last year and 15 universities this year. The competition ran in Lagos and Abuja and all the credit goes to First Bank Plc, our sponsors for increasing the scope of the contest to promote ethics amongst Nigerians”.

Sex-For-Marks: Sacked OAU Lecturer To Remain In Custody, Court Rules Today

The Federal High court sitting in Osogbo on Tuesday declined the bail application of an ex-lecturer with Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Professor Richard Akindele.

Akindele was earlier arraigned by Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for allegedly demanding sex in exchange for marks from Monica Osagie, a postgraduate student of the institution.

The presiding Judge, Justice Maureen Onyetenu at the last proceedings adjourned for definite trial and hearing application for bail but asked that Professor Akindele be remanded in prison.

At the hearing on Tuesday, the ICPC counsel, Kehinde Adetoye, told the court that they were ready to open the case for trial and had a witness in court out of six witnesses.

However, the trial could not go on because the lead counsel for ICPC was absent in court due to some other official assignment and he wanted to personally conduct the case.

The defence counsel, however, moved the application for bail which the ICPC counsel objected to.

The court then ordered that the facts alluded to in the counter affidavit of the prosecuting counsel needed to be corroborated with evidence.

The judge then adjourned till 17th of December to enable all parties to produce evidence alluded to in the affidavit.

OAU Sport Council Releases Fixtures For The Inter-hall Football Competition

The Sport Council of Obafemi Awolowo University has unveiled the fixtures for the forthcoming 2017/2018 Inter-hall football competition which expected to debut on Saturday, 24th November 2018 and expected to end on Wednesday, 4th December 2018.

The competing Hall teams are divided into group A and B. Group A includes Fajuyi Hall, Quarters and ETF Hall while group B consists Awolowo Hall, Town, Postgraduate Hall, Angola Hall.

2019/2020 PTDF Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship Application Is Currently Ongoing

2019/2020 OVERSEAS POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME UNDER PTDF STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS IN UK, GERMANY & FRANCE

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), the Federal Government agency with the mandate of developing indigenous human capacity and petroleum technology to meet the needs of the oil and gas industry, invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for Overseas MSc and PhD Scholarships to institutions under its UK, Germany and France strategic partnership initiative. Successful candidates will be awarded scholarships to study in these countries commencing in the 2019/2020 academic session.

The Scheme
Under this scheme, candidates are invited to apply through PTDF to specific programmes at the partner institutions in any of the countries (full list of sponsored courses is available below). The award includes the provision of flight tickets, payment of health insurance, payment of tuition and bench fees (where applicable) as well as the provision of allowances to meet the costs of accommodation and living expenses. The programmes will also include language classes to aid scholars settle into their new environments.


Selection Process, Criteria & Requirements
PTDF scholarships are highly competitive and only candidates who are outstanding across the board are selected. A selection committee will be constituted to assess applications using the following criteria;

- Academic merit as evidenced by quality of degrees, full academic transcripts, other professional qualifications acquired, and relevant publications (where available) to be referenced by applicants
- Awards for leadership and/or academic excellence (where available).
- Membership of professional bodies
- The viability of the study/research plan.
- Applicants are required to make a case for their scholarship by submitting a statement of purpose (maximum 500 words) stating the reason(s) they want to undertake the study, the relevance of the proposed study to the oil & gas industry and its expected impact on national development.

Requirements

MSc
- A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) qualification in their first degree or a Second Class Lower (2.2) with relevant industry experience
- Must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC)
- Must be computer literatePossession of 5 O/level credits including English Language

PhD
- Must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC)
- Must be computer literate
- A minimum of Second Class Lower (2.2) in their first degree and a good second-degree certificate;
- Must submit a research proposal relevant to the oil and gas industry (of not more than 5 pages) to include: Topic, introduction, objective, methodology and mode of data collection (go to http://ptdf.gov.ng/scholarship-page/ for format)
- Applicants must also include their master’s degree project

This is to inform the aspirants of the Obafemi Awolowo University that the merit list for the 2018/2019 admissions has been released.

We therefore urge candidates to follow the procedure below to check their admission status

OAU: Court Remands 'Sex-For-Marks' Lecturer In Ilesha Prison, Adjourns Case

Prof. Richard Iyiola Akindele, the former lecturer with Obafemi Awolowo University, accused by her student, Monica Osagie, of demanding sex to pass her has been remanded in prison custody.

Akindele was arraigned on Monday by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission before Justice Maureen Onyetenu of a Federal High Court, Osogbo, on four counts bordering on alteration of age and demanding sex to pass his student.

A Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo remanded Akindele in prison custody.

Dressed in all-white attire, Akindele, pleaded not guilty to all the four counts pressed against him.


The charge reads: “That on 16th day of September, 2017 or thereabout, you corruptly asked for sexual benefits for yourself from one Monica Osagie for a favour that would be thereafter shown to her by upgrading her academic record from fail to pass, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 8 (1)a and 2 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission Act 2000.

“That you solicited sexual benefits from the victim on 16th of September, 2017 or thereabout for a favour to be given to you, the act contrary to and punishable under Section 18 (b) of the ICPC Act.

“That you deliberately concealed evidence, with the intent to remove parts of the conversation between you and the victim, contrary to Section 15 (1) and (2) of the ICPC Act.

“That you falsified your age by saying, under interrogation, that you were born on April 19, 1961, while in your personal file retrieved from OAU, you claimed you were born on April 19, 1959, an act contrary to and punishable under Section 25 of ICPC Acts, 2000.”

Addressing the court, the senior legal officer, ICPC, Kehinde Adetoye, said the prosecution was ready for definite hearing of the matter.

Defense counsel, Francis Omotoso, who appeared with two other lawyers, however, observed that the name of the counsel that signed the charge sheet of the case was not marked.

He said three names were listed, but the one that signed the charge sheet among the three was not marked.

Responding to the observation, Adetoye explained that Ebenezer Adenekan, the lead counsel for the ICPC, signed for other counsel involved in the matter.

Asked by the court if ready for definite hearing of the matter, the defense counsel, after initially declaring readiness for hearing, pleaded for more time to study the charge sheet.

He said the prosecution only served him 30 minutes before the sitting commenced.

Reacting to the claim, prosecution counsel, Ayantoye, said that for weeks, he made efforts to reach the defendant and serve him, adding that Akindele could not be reached through his mobile line.

Although the defense counsel made oral application for bail for the defendant, Justice Onyetenu insisted on an affidavit.

She subsequently adjourned the matter to Tuesday, November 27, 2018 for definite hearing and remanded Akindele in prison custody.

What We Know So Far About The Attempted Bank Robbery At Lagere

It was an unusual and tense atmosphere earlier today at the surbub area of the ancient town of Ile Ife - Lagere, as suspected armed robbers shot sporadically into the air, in what seems to be an attempt to rob banks in the area. Afterwards, the intervention of the Nigerian police force, Ile-Ife command foiled the attempt, the Police claims.

In a phone convrvsation with OAU Peeps News Agency, Funsho Adegboye, the Ife Area Commander said it was just an attempted robbery.

"There was no attack, it was an attempted robbery based on the information we got from the members of the public which is highly commendable," the Area Commander told us.



"As we got the information, we alerted our officers, we deployed them and we are able to pursue them. On sighting the Police, there was an open fire, in which one of the robbers sustained injury. We are able to dislodge them and we impounded the Toyota Sienna vehicle they brought," he added.

Laying to rest the insinuation that some banks in the area were attacked, a staff of Fidelity Bank who does not want his name in the print because he was not authorised to speak on the development said the bank was not attacked.

Reiterating this, the Ife Area commander confirmed no bank was attacked. He said "the quick intervention of the Police and quick reinforcement of the commissioner of police from Osogbo prevented what could have been a robbery attack. You know banks are concentrated in one area, so they were caught met with resistenace between Diamond and Fidelity banks."



The Police claimed that one of the suspected robbers sustained injury during the gunshot exchange.

The commander also noted that no casualty was recorded as no police officer was either injured or shot.

OAU Peeps also understands through investigation that the suspected robbers earlier lauched an attack around Damico Area, close to campus gate, of which the commander confirmed.

Accounts from eye witnesses who spoke with OAU Peeps confirmed there were gunshots and the suspected robbers later escaped through the Akarabata area of Modakeke town.

World Bank Selects OAU, 15 Other Nigerian Universities As African Centre of Excellence

World Bank has selected sixteen (16) Nigerian universities as African Centre of Excellence.

The Centres include ACE in ICT Driven Knowledge Park, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

Others are: Centre for Oilfield Chemicals Research (CEFOR), University of Port-Harcourt; ACE for Genomics of Infectious Diseases, Redeemer’s University, Ede; and ACE on Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria

ACE in Reproductive Health and Innovation went to University of Benin; Centre for Dryland Agriculture, Bayero University, Kano; and Centre for Food Technology and Research (CEFTER), Benue State University, Makurdi.


ACE in Applied Informatics and Communication was given to Covenant University, Ota; Centre for Public Health and Toxicological Research (PUTOR), University of Port Harcourt; ACE for Sustainable Power and Energy Development, University of Nigeria Nsukka.

ACE on Technology Enhanced Learning (ACETEL) was given to National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN); and ACE in Future Energies and Electrochemical Systems (ACE-FUELS), Federal University of Technology, Owerri.

The rest are: ACE on New Pedagogies in Engineering Education (ACENPEE), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; ACE for Drug Research, Herbal Medicine Development and Regulatory Science (ACEDRHMDRS), University of Lagos.

ACE for Mycotoxin and Food Safety was given to Federal University of Technology, Minna;and Center for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP), Bayero University, Kano.

NAN also reports the 12 countries participating in the ACE impact project are Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Senegal , Niger, Djibouti, Guinea, Togo and Gambia.

Africa Centres of Excellence for Development Impact (ACE Impact), also known as ACE 3, resulted from the gains and successes recorded with ACE-1 and 2.


ACE-3 aims to work better across sectors, with more industry collaboration.

It aims to simplify flow of funds and support more policy harmonization initiatives in higher education across the region

The broad objective of ACE Impact is to increase quantity, quality and development of relevant postgraduate education in selected universities through regional specialisation.

FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 20th November 2018 as public holiday to mark the Eid-El Maulud celebration.

This was announced by the Minister of Interior, Lt Gen (rtd) Abdulrahman Dambazau, on Tuesday in a statement signed by the permanent secretary, Dr. M.B Umar.

He urged all Muslim faithful to align themselves with the prophet’s teachings which border on piety, charity, tolerance and peaceful co-existence, among others.



Dambazau also called on all Nigerians to uphold these virtues, with a view to overcoming the current national challenges facing the country.

He assured that “the Federal Government remains committed to the unity of the country and as such, will put adequate structures on ground towards ensuring that the forthcoming general elections are credible, free and fair.”

AFCON Qualifier 2019: South Africa To Challenge Nigeria Today

The Bafana Bafana of South Africa have been booked to face the Super Eagles of Nigeria at 2pm today, Saturday, 17th November, 2018 at Johannesburg.

Both aforementioned teams are leading the table of the Group E. Nigeria with 9 points, South Africa with 8 points, Libya with 4 points and Seychelles with 1 point.

The Super Eagles are hoping to win the match for straight qualification because they lost their last match against South Africa 2 goals to nil in 2017 on Nigerian soil.



According to Rohr in Dailypost news, the French-German coach of the Super Eagles thinks the match will be a bit difficult but he hopes for a win or draw.

"We are expecting a difficult match but a good result. We are targeting qualification which means we need at least a point but we go there to win the game as we do always.

”If it is only a draw, it will be enough because we will surely qualify with one point.” said Rohr.

The match is expected to be a tough one for both teams. Nevertheless, there will either be  a win, a lose or a draw.

ICPC Set To Arraign OAU Sex For Mark Professor In Court

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is set to arraign a former lecturer of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Professor Richard Iyiola Akindele, at the Federal High Court, Osogbo.

Mr Akindele was accused of demanding sex from one of his students, Ms. Monica Osagie, in order to upgrade her academic result.

In a statement by the spokesman of the commission, Rasheedat Okoduwa, Professor Akindele will be docked on Monday 19th November 2018, on a 3-count charge having been accused of using his position as a lecturer in the Department of Management and Accounting to demand for sexual benefit from a student and fraudulently upgrade her result in Research Method course which she supposedly failed in 2017.

The Commission says that his actions were contrary to Sections 8 (1) (a) (ii), and 18 (d) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 and are punishable under the same sections.



One of the counts reads, “That you, professor Akindele, on or about the 16th day of September, 2017 at Ile-Ife did corruptly ask for sexual benefits for yourself from Ms. Monica Osagie on account of favour to be afterwards shown to her by you in the discharge of your official duties as a lecturer in the Department of Management and Accounting, Obafemi Awolowo University, to wit; altering her academic grades in the course with code MBA 632- Research Method from fail to pass; and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 8(1)(a)(ii) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.”

The 57-year-old professor has asked for plea-bargain having admitted guilt. He also cited ill-health as a factor that may make him unable to stand the rigours of prison life, notifying the Commission through his lawyer, Omotayo Alade-Fawole.

He pleaded that his prayers for plea-bargain be considered, more so as he was already serving punishment for his offence having been sacked by the university.

Ms. Osagie had earlier expressed a lack of confidence in the capacity of ICPC to give her a fair hearing.

According to the commission, the public announcement of the professors impending arraignment is in fulfillment of its promise to the public to avail them of the outcome of the investigation in due time.

OAU Management Retreat: Ogunbiyi Charges Workers On Productivity

The Chairman of the Governing Council of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile- Ife, Dr. Yemi Ogunbiyi, has charged all categories of staff to do everything within their power to ensure that the glory of the University is restored and make it   even more glorious so that the dreams of the founding fathers  in establishing the University in the first place would not be distorted.


Dr. Ogunbiyi gave the charge at a three – day retreat organized by the Governing Council for all the Principal Officers, Provosts of Colleges, Dean of Faculties, Heads of the Departments and Units, Union Leaders and other stakeholders in the University. He stated that though there were many problems confronting the University, none should remain insurmountable given the caliber of intellectuals in different departments domiciled within the University.

A release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that Dr. Ogunbiyi frowned at the current system in operation in the University which makes documents that could be treated with dispatch to be unnecessarily delayed, stopping at so many tables, thereby frustrating their intended purposes; or a situation where the Vice-Chancellor is unnecessarily over-burdened by being made to attend to every document. He wondered how the Vice-Chancellor would find time to attend to other pressing matters, particularly the aspect of fund-raising. The Chairman, thereafter, counseled the Bursary, Registry, Audit and all other necessary departments and units of the University to do a mini retreat for their staff and impart them with the outcome of the main retreat so that the entire University system would be running smoothly

Going down memory lane, he highlighted different achievements which made then University of  Ife, (now Obafemi Awolowo University) the  cynosure of all eyes as the Centre of Excellence to include  the numerous academic laurels won by staff and students in competitions within and outside the country, spectacular breakthrough in researches in virtually all faculties, medals won in both Local and International Sports competitions and other forms of attraction particularly the horticultural excellence of the landscape and architectural  masterpiece of the buildings; urging the crop of the current staff not only to maintain the standard but to also build on its  enduring legacies.

The Council Chairman, then, tasked all the participants to come up with suggestions, comments and innovations that would bring about rapid transformations to Obafemi Awolowo University and make it a truly “ Great Ife” in all ramifications.

Welcoming the participants, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, enjoined them to justify the purpose of the retreat by concentrating fully with open mind and putting into practice all that they would learn within the three days, stressing why the retreat was taking place at a resort, in a serene environment, away from academic and administrative distractions of their respective offices.

He appreciated the Chairman of Council and his team for their thoughtfulness in bringing out the idea of the retreat and for believing in the ingenuity of staff to bring about the desired turn around for the overall development of the University.

In a highly incisive, soul-searching and thought-provoking lecture, titled: THE NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY SYSTEM : IN SEARCH OF EXCELLENCE AND GLOBAL RELEVANCE,  a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Olufemi Bamiro, urged Universities to rise up and occupy their pride of place as problem solvers and produce graduates who would intensify researches into finding solutions to myriad of problems confronting the society. According to him: ”A service intensive university, as distinct from the seemingly narrow perception of a world class university, applies and also imbibes in its graduates, research-driven world-class thinking to the analysis and provision of solutions to the socio-economic problems of a nation state, thereby guaranteeing her sustainable development and a place of pride in the comity of nations”. 

Professor Bamiro enumerated the expectations of the society from the University and urged its leadership to be up-and-doing in order to justify the confidence reposed in it; advising those in the academic, administrative, and technical organs to devise means and innovations that would make life more meaningful to their immediate environments.

The Professor of Mechanical Engineering, while alluding to a 2017 submission of the Global University Network for Innovation which emphasized that “Universities face a dual and potentially conflicting responsibility to address both the local demands of society based on the race for global competitiveness and local and global demands to contribute to a more equitable and sustainable society at local and global levels”, said OAU should redouble its efforts and compete with other Universities in the quest for pragmatic solutions to the problems bedeviling the Nigerian-nation and the African continent as a whole.

Professor Bamiro, who recalled that OAU had a retreat few years ago with the theme: “Policy Frameworks for Transforming OAU to World-class University status”, commended the University for the conscious efforts made since then in the evolution process, adding that transforming into World-class University is a desire that is gaining currency all over the World now as a measure of excellence in the global intellectual space.

He therefore enjoined all the participants to regard the retreat as the drawing board for charting the plan that will reposition the University on the pedestal to its rightful and leadership place in the comity of World’s renowned Universities.

Circular To The University Community

The attention of the University Management has been drawn to the rumours being widely circulated that the students of the University are expected to vacate the campus.

We wish to assure all students that the University Academic Calendar for the 2017/2018 Academic Session is very much on course. As there are no plans to compel students to vacate the campus until the end-of year holidays, all members of the University community must be unanimous in the resolution to ensure that the Calendar remains sacrosanct.

The University Management therefore enjoins all students and staff to continue their normal activities in line with the University’s approved guidelines.

The University Management will like to assure all staff and students of their welfare and safety at all times.

Minimum Wage: NLC Suspends Strike

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has called off the nationwide industrial action initially scheduled to commence on November 6 to further press for workers’ demand for new national minimum wage.

The President of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba, said this on Monday night in Abuja while addressing journalists at the end of a meeting of the tripartite committee set up by government to negotiate labour’s demand.

Organised labour had threatened to commence nationwide strike on November 6 should government fail to accede to its N30,000 minimum wage demand. The federal government had offered to pay N24,000 while some state governments are even offering less.

But briefing journalists on Monday night, Mr. Wabba said, “The tripartite negotiating committee this evening concluded its assignment. Agreement has been reached and also documents have been signed. The report will be submitted to Mr. President tomorrow by 4:15pm.

“Therefore, as organised labour, we want to use this medium to thank all the tripartite partners for their understanding and importantly for concluding this very national assignment.

“And having reached this position, and also the fact that the assignment has been concluded, organised labour also decided that the proposed industrial action is hereby suspended.

“Therefore, we thought this should be communicated appropriately without also any delusion or missing information.

“As the chairperson have said, mutual agreements have been reached and this will be make public tomorrow and we must appreciate the roles that organised private sectors have actually demonstrated and the attitude brought to this process and to members of the tripartite negotiating team.”


The Chairperson, Tripartite Committee, Amma Pepple, corroborated Mr Wabba’s claim, saying her committee had reached a truce and concluded its assignment.

“We are going to present our report to Mr President tomorrow at 4:15pm and he will reveal the figure that we have recommended,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, commended members of the committee for their time and commitment to the long and tortuous negotiation processes.

“I am confident that government will give expeditious consideration of the report tomorrow by Mr President and very soon the processes will be put in place to truly actualise your recommendations so that the status of our working populace will be enhanced and they would receive appropriate and commensurate payments for the services they offer to our nation and to the different sectors of our economy,” he said.

Government and labour had been at loggerheads over the demand for a new minimum wage. Labour says the minimum wage of N18,000 is paltry and no longer acceptable.

Omoyele Sowore To Storm OAU For Town Hall Meeting On Tuesday

The Presidential  aspirant of the African Action Congress in the forthcoming 2019 election is set to hold a meeting with the generality of students and staffs of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife,Osun state.

The meeting which is slated to hold In the institution's Oduduwa hall at exactly 12:00pm on the 6th day of November is expected to create a round table discussion  between the Aspirant and the students to ask and answer questions pertaining to politics and the Nigerian system.

Omoyele Sowore who will be contesting under the aegis of African Action Congress as the flag bearer is the convener Of TAKE-IT-BACK  movement and the Publisher of Sahara Reporters.

Sowore was also one time President of the University of Lagos Student union.

It would be recalled that the aspirant has been holding Town hall meetings in all major towns in Nigeria.

After OAU Peeps Investigation, Department Of Local Government President Impeached Over Embezzlement Of Funds

The National Association of local government Students (NASLOGOS),OAU Chapter has impeached their president  over embezzlement of funds, OAU Peeps can report authoritatively.

This decision was reached at a congress held last thursday which was fully graced by most students of the department that
Mr Akinkunmi Sodiq Opeyemi should be relieved of his duty.

This is coming after OAU Peeps News Agency, revealed after investigations how Akinkunmi Sodiq Opeyemi single-handedly embezzled over 0.5million Naira belonging to the association.

This had lead to a congress  and  consensus reached immediately for his impeachment.

Speaking with OAU Peeps Afolabi David, the public relation officer of the association confirmed the impeachment of the president at the congress.

According to him the impeachment of the president was at first a demand by the panel before it was moved as a motion in the congress.
 
 "The only thing i can say is the deed has been done and the president has been impeached. ""- the P.R.O. said.
   
 He further said" Well it was according to the constitution and according to what was recommended by the panel set up, the panel demanded that the president be impeached then it was moved as a motion by the congress men."

However, while speaking with OAU Peeps News Agency, the speaker, Saliu Abdulrauf expressed his disappointment in a leader whom according to him was well trusted and respected.

" He was impeached for misconduct and misappropriation of funds,embezzlement of funds by the president who we all trusted. When we found out he was involved in such an act, I was really surprised." Rauf said

"However the vice president should be taking  over leadership although students are clamouring over her incapability." He added

OAU Peeps News Agency gathered  that there's  a kind of perceived controversy amidst  the students of the department on the capability and efficiency of the Vice President who according to the constitution is expected to replace the impeached president.

In an interaction with a student who pleaded anonymity with OAU Peeps News Agency, she expressed disbelief in the capability and capacity of the Vice president if allowed to assume power.
"A diplomat student over BSC?"  She questioned.

Students of the department had been earlier bewildered by how the  president of the association had singlehandedly embezzled the association funds using fraudulent means as reported.

It should be recalled that in an earlier report that the embattled/impeached  President, Akinkunmi Sodiq had already confessed to the university investigative department after being drilled of  his fraudulent activities and affirmed been guilty singlehandedly excluding other executives
