OAU Management Declares Two Weeks Mid-Semester Break For Students

The obafemi Awolowo University Management has declared two weeks mid-sesmester break for students.

In a Release made available to OAUPeeps News Agency, the management of the institution declared two weeks holiday after the management meeting that held Saturday, 26th March 2021. 

The Release read thus:

"This is to inform staff and students of the University that Management,at a meeting held today, Saturday,26th of March,2022, approved a Two-week mid-semester break for students beginning from Monday 28th,2022.

We wish students of the institution an enjoyable break."

OAUpeeps hereby advice all students to remain safe and keep updates for any further informations from the management.

OAU NUGA'22 Journey Comes To An End

It was a tough fight between OAU Giant and Unilorin players in the final match of this year 2022 NUGA's competition as the game ended in a goalless draw between the two finalists. Unfortunately, OAU Giants lost in a penalty shootout by 5-4. 

While OAU made history in some sports like cricket, badminton, swimming,judo,handball and basketball as the female basketballer won the gold medals

All OAU representatives will be moving back to Ife very soon as the NUGA'22 comes to an end on the 26th of March, 2022.

OAU Students' Union Gives Management Ultimatum Hours To Shut Down School If Crisis Is Not Solved

Following the protest that ensued in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife minutes after the announcement of Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire as the new Vice Chancellor of OAU by some aggrieved indigenes of the ancient city, the protesters on Monday went spiritual as some of them were seen in their full-blown traditional outfits

The protesters in the early hours of Monday blocked the main entrance to OAU and some strategic spots on campus including phase 2 gate and road 7 gate. Due to the fact that protesters are not happy about the emergence of non-ife indigene as the incoming Vice Chancellor of the institution. Prior to this protest, GREAT IFE STUDENTS' UNION

OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY, ILE-IFE has made a released that says 

"The Union strongly condemns the barbaric acts perpetuated by the protesters, including but not only beating and harassing members of our campus."

Based on the aforementioned, "the Union has demanded that the Management of the University, if the protests do not subside in 72 hours, should close the University until the crisis is over. Informing this decision is also the fact that the protesters are scaling up their affront on our University community and its immediate community where a large number of our members live. Without proactive measures to address this crisis, it is not impossible that the protesters will invade the campus at any time and further inconvenience the University community such that Union members suffer.

The Union, with all sense of responsibility and its revolutionary decorum, will keep Union members abreast of developments as they affect them. Union members are implored to stay out of harm's way. The Union cannot and will not be quiet over this issue – we cannot afford having Union members as casualties of this confrontation!"

Junior Chamber International OAU: Induction and Award Ceremony

The Junior Chamber International Nigeria, Obafemi Awolowo University Chapter inducted new members into the organization on Saturday 19th of March 2022. The event started by exactly  3:48pm with the recitation of the creed by both the inductees and members of JCI as a whole. The M.C of the occassion, Cooperate Emcee invited the dignitaries to the high table, he then as usual lightened the mood in the hall , after which was followed by a welcome speech by the president of JCIOAU Miss Feyisayo Awopetu. 

Mrs Oluwatoyin Atanda, the keynote speaker of the occasion graced the occasion virtually, she duly apologised for her absence from the induction. She mentioned a lot of things on JCI to advice and motivate the inductees to work harder. She stated “ JCI Nigeria will be 65 years old this year" what a wonderful speech she gave 

Professor S.S Okoya, the staff adviser came up and he stated how he was excited about the induction of new members into the association. He also said he was happy about the current president being a female due to the fact that he want females at the arms of affairs. He ended by congratulating the inductees.

Cooperate Emcee came up with up with more fun activities and giveaway to make the audience lively. A beautiful spoken words performance was presented by All I Memunat. The Erstwhile President of JCIOAU; Femi Adeyemo started off his speech with a brief story about himself while asking the inductees about what made them join JCI. Shortly after, the Induction started with the inductees who were well dressed coming out to recite the Creed and also read a section of the constitution.

Prof Lara Oradiay who was duly represented by Dr Adekoya admonished the new members to ensure they carry the roles of JCI; impact lives and give back to the society. She ended the speech with a charge for them saying “Be different like Daniel in the Bible”. Soon after Awards were offered to outstanding members of the association by the president. The Board members were introduced to the audience and the president gave vote of thanks

OAU NUGA'22 Journey

The Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) organizes university-level sports events in Nigeria. It hosts an interuniversity sports competition called the University Games. The first NUGA games were held at the University of Ibadan in 1966. Presently, there are over eighty universities as members of NUGA, both private and public owned.

NUGA approves fifteen different sporting events at the University Games: track and field, badminton, basketball, chess, cricket, handball, hockey, judo, soccer, squash, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, and volleyball, after which the games have grown overtime to sixteen

The Zone C Pre-Nuga which hosted the likes of

FUTA, AAUA, Uniosun, Elizade University, JABU, OUI, Redeemers University, Adeleke University was hosted by Obafemi Awolowo University, commenced on Sunday, 13th of February, 2022 and end on the 16th of February, 2022

Having completed and qualified from the Pre-Nuga , OAU Sportmen traveled from 16th of March, 2022,  from Ife to Lagos in order to represent the university in the Nigeria University Game Association that will be holding in Unilag

However, OAU was unable to transport all the Sportmen at once due to unavailability of buses to transport them at once. Sports like hockey, athletics,taekwondo were unable move  some were told to wait till Thursday 17th March, 2022.  due to the fact that there were no enough buses. This was made known to OAU Peeps News Agency Correspondent by Oluwanoni the Students' Union Director Of Sports

While some sports like cricket, badminton, swimming,judo,handball, basketball, football actually moved on 16th of March, 2022. Leaving ile-ife around 1pm and getting to Unilag Lagos State around 5pm, they were told to converge in a one-multipurpose Hall to do one of the Corona test which was ecountered with delays according to one of the Sportmen Orisunbade Tunde who confirmed the scenario. 

The 26th Unilag NUGA  started on 16th March, 2022  at University of Lagos which was said to have adequate, enough and good facilities to host the competitions.

Also the competitions will come to an end on the 26th of March 2022.

Biography Of OAU Newly Appointed Vice-Chancellor Prof Bamire Adebayo

The newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Bamire Adebayo Simeon is a native of Oyan in Odo-Otin LGA of Osun State, was born on 18th January, 1959. He started his educational life in Datus Preparatory School, Accra, Ghana and then had his secondary school education in St. Charles’ Grammar School, Osogbo in the 1972/76 period. He was admitted into the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife) to read Agricultural Economics in the Faculty of Agriculture where he completed his first, second and third degrees; Bachelor of Agriculture in 1985, M.Phil., in 1992, and Ph.D. in 1999. He had a joint sponsorship for his PhD programme by the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). His PhD thesis won him an award: “National Universities Postgraduate Thesis Award” in 2001.

Prof. Bamire joined the Department of Agricultural Economics as Assistant Lecturer in 1992 and rose to the post of Professor in 2008. He was a Visiting Scientist at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan; the Vice-Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Obafemi Awolowo University in the 2007/2008 & 2008/2009 sessions; the Head of Department of Agricultural Economics for the 2010/2011 academic session and the immediate past Dean of our great Faculty - the Faculty of Agriculture, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

During his tenure as Dean (1st August, 2013 – 31st July, 2015), he embarked and completed laudable developmental projects in the Faculty through donations from his social capital network and amiable disposition to Faculty members, Alumni and friends of the Faculty. These projects include: resuscitating the Faculty water fountain which has now become a centre of attraction for film makers, drama and photography; changing the Faculty Committee Room to wearing a modern outlook; beautifying the Faculty and environment with flower gardens, paint markings of parks and lightings; refurbishing toilets attached to Faculty Committee Room, Soil and Land Resources Management Department, ground floor and landscaping the frontal part of the Faculty with the inscription of the Faculty name; restructuring of Faculty Agro-fresh Mart; renovating the Faculty Library; and many more. Prof. Bamire ran an open door policy and has proven to be consistently diligent, disciplined, resourceful, reliable and with good team spirit. He has a good insight and experience of best business practices that could contribute to system development, having served in various capacities in different committees and assisted tremendously in promoting academic and research programmes in his Department, Faculty and University as a whole. Prof. Bamire is computer literate with a good knowledge of the application of statistical and econometric tools.

Prof. Bamire Adebayo Simeon has also participated and still participates as Principal Investigator in different on-farm researches and as Resource Person in training programmes which have provided long-term interactions with farmers and non-farmers in their communities and business concerns. This is made possible through his long-time collaboration with scientists in the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) based in Ibadan, Nigeria; ILRI/DfID (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia); HarvestPlus/IFPRI (Washington, DC., USA); International Wheat & Maize Improvement Center (CIMMYT), Mexico; Makerere University (Uganda); United Nations University Institute of Natural Resources (UNU-INRA), Accra, Ghana; United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU- WIDER), Helsinki, Finland; AERC (Nairobi, Kenya), and African University for Cooperative Development (UADC), Cotonou, Benin Republic; among others. As a result, he has attended different national and international conferences and workshops relating to biodiversity and sustainable agricultural development and has participated in collaborative studies involving researchers from various disciplines on sustainable agricultural production. Prof. Bamire has participated in and written different technical reports that relate to practical work experiences in agricultural business and development in Nigeria and other developing nations. He also has more than fifty publications in local and international Journals, which are centred on field experiences on resource development and institutional support for smallholder farmers in rural and urban centres for enhanced food security and poverty reduction.

Prof. Bamire is a member of different professional bodies including the Nigerian Association of Agricultural Economists (NAAE) and Leadership for Environment & Development (LEAD). He is also a member of the Drought Tolerant Maize for Africa Project and Agribenchmark based in Germany.

He is a member of CONUA OAU 

Prof. Bamire is happily married to Dr.(Mrs.) Felicia Bosede Bamire and together are blessed with children.

Breaking:OAU Appoints New Vice Chancellor

The Governing Council of the Obafemi Awolowo University has announced Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire as new Vice-chancellor of the institution as the post will become vacant from 7th June, 2022.

In a meeting held by the council on 7th December, 2021. The post of the Vice-Chancellor was flagged off the process for the appointment of a new  Vice-Chancellor who is expected to assume duties on 7th June, 2022. In line with approval of the Council, the vacancy was widely advertised to compliance with relevant Statuses and Acts guiding appointment to the position. 

At a special meeting of 14th February, 2022. The council check out the Curriculum Vitae of the twenty applicants of which sixteen were shortlisted, having met the advertised criteria. Interaction all the sixteen candidates with Candidates began on Monday, 14th  2022 and ended on Wednesday, 16th 2022. 

After the interaction of the sixteen candidates before the Joint Council and Senate Selection board, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, a Professor of Agricultural Economics from the faculty of Agriculture Obafemi Awolowo University ile-ife has been appointed the new Vice-Chanclellor of the institution in line with the provision of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provision) (Amendment) Act as amended. 

 

Popular Yoruba Actor Attends Linguistics OAU Freshers' Induction

 The popular Yoruba Actor, Chief Kola Oyewo graced the Induction Ceremony of the New Intakes of the Linguistics and African Languages Students’ Association in grand style. 

The ceremony which was held on Thursday, March 10, 2022, at Pit theatre, Obafemi Awolowo University had many prominent personalities in attendance.

The veteran actor, who was awarded for his impact on the progress of Yoruba Language and culture in the society, was asked to do “Iwure” where he prayed that the inductees have a smooth run in their academic pursuits.

He implored the inductees to make good use of the opportunity of getting educated as there are people who do not have such opportunities.

"Focus on what you have come to do in OAU, don't let frivolities take over your time," he urged.

In his remarks, the Head of Department, Professor Fabunmi, who was also awarded, noted that any student who wants to graduate well will put in a great effort from the first year. 

 “Don't say that you will start to put the effort in year 2 or 3,” He charged.

 The Director of Culture, Abidemi Abeeblah while expressing his joy, appreciated God for the success of the ceremony and gave kudos to the lecturers, guests, awardees, and the new intakes for their maximum cooperation.

“To the best of my knowledge and people's remarks, I think this Induction is the best so far,” he added.

In the same development, the president of the department, Ojetola Ridwan said, “ The induction ceremony has been an avenue for lecturers to pray for the students and also, emphasize how languages and cultures are interrelated. It has been the practice of the department for a long time."

“Through the induction, students discover their talents. We have some students in part 4 now who discovered their talents when they had their induction,” He affirmed.

According to Semilore Adesite, one of the inductees, “ The induction ceremony was a very interesting program and an eye-opener to the understanding of our cultural heritage. The teamwork of everyone produced an interesting and eye-catching event for everyone and even the guests.”

 Kolawole Azeez Opomulero, Samuel Ibikunle, Bababunmi Obanimi were also awarded. 

 A student of the department, Bababunmi Obanimi who was awarded as the best cultural female student extended appreciation to the association and beseeched inductees to be well behaved and face their studies.

Other dignitaries present at the ceremony are, Prof. Salawu, Prof. Opefeyitimi, Prof. Ogunwale, Dr Jayeola, Mr Olodude and some parents of the inductees.

EXCLUSIVE: We Will Be Providing Buses For The Road 7 Axis Residence, President Reform Reveals His Plans To Great Ife Students

 Following the inauguration and swearing into office of the Union officers that held on Wednesday, 9th March 2022. The inauguration which came after six months that they were elected and voted into office. 

The Great Ife Union President, Comrade Olayiwola Festus Folahan, Reform in an exclusive interview with the Association of Campus Journalist on Thursday 10, March 2022 discusses his plans and agenda for the Great Ife Students’ Union.

Speaking about how his first day in office looks like, he said " Well, i don't think i have any extraordinary feelings because this is the sixth month after election and which have been doing activities as the Union President". He further explained that before the inauguration, they have been attending to the needs of students when called upon and all this have been doing from there pocket to fulfill there own quota toward the development of the Great Ife Students' Union. 

Speaking on speculations that flew around during his campaign that he was a member of the left organization, he answered "the question is that is that who's a leftist?" he further went on to say he doubt if he has heard of the word leftist before. 

Speaking on the first thing that he wants to tackles as the president, he said "the transportation issues especially for the Road 7 axis, which he acknowledged that the residents of the Road 7 axis are going through a lot of transportation issues because they are always stranded so many times, both in the morning and in the evening. He however promised that his administration will see to it that a bus is made available for them to transport them to and fro at lesser prices which will be monitored by the students' Union and ensure that all the activities are properly watched. 

Consequently he said, the executive body are one irrespective of anything happen and they do things in accordance to their plans and they come together and have meetings everyday to make sure they annex their ideas and be able to present it to the Great Ife Students and also, the major priority of the executive body is the welfarism of the students. He further assures that the Welfare Director of the Union is working on the issues of price exploitation going on on campus.  

Dealing with external forces most especially those that have the outlook of "God-fatherism" in relations to how the Union was proscribed the last time. He said he doesn't think the Union was proscribed because of "God-fatherism" but because of bad leadership crisis. However, he said he's not a fan of Godfatherism although he has mentors who advises him and he also has the freedom to weigh every advice given to him and decide which one to use and which one to blot on because they are advice and not like "Godfathers" who wants to impose their idea on someone. 

Speaking on how to keep the Union finances strong, the president acknowledged every students is a financial member of the Union on the virtue that there's a union due that have been paid by every students to the school account and as representative of the students, it is their responsibility to demand for the union due and send it to the union account so as to be able to use it for the Union activities after which they will be a monthly report of the money spent by the Union and also the audit committee from the Students' Representative Council will also help in the check and balances because the Great Ife Students Union is a democratic system. 

In order to see to the fact that the welfarism of the students at all halls of residences are been maintained and adequately taken of, the hall executives are mandatory to send reports to the office of the President and also whenever there are issues reported to the Central Executive Council, a call is put through to the hall executives to confirm what's exactly going on in the hall of residence. 

In relations to getting justice for Heritage which the President made mention in his speech on the inauguration and swearing in day, he affirmed that the case in the court of law and the Union is watching keenly to ensure that the justice is

 justifiable. 

Speaking on the application of Scientific Maximum Shishi, the President said it will be replaced with application of community service however, parading of offenders will still be in place because while applying SMS on offenders, you have to put in place the health status of the individual. He however commended the student that was assaulted by the town-igboro driver for doing a nice job of snapping him and the plate number of his bus and every students should also emulate this habit so has to make judgment faster. 

Sending message to the generality of Great Ife Students', he said "I will firstly like to appreciate Great Ife Students' for entrusting us with this position and we also solicit for their continuous support Truthfully, Great Ife students have been helpful in all ramifications. So, we will also advise them to keep up with what they’ve been doing and also as Great Ife implies that Great Ife remains Great Ife that there are many things that we do outside Great Ife and that helps us to stand out, we should also continue in this lane with our best, we will do what is good at the interest of the Great Ife students. OAU Fixes New Date For Matriculation

The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, has announced a new the matriculation date for the matriculation which was earlier postponed till further notice.

Recall it was earlier by OAU Peeps News Agency that the Matriculation which was to hold scheduled to hold on 9th March 2022 was postponed indefinitely. 

However, in a Press Statement made available to OAU Peeps News Agency stated that the Matriculation is now scheduled to take place on Monday,14th March,2022 between 2PM and 6PM.

Matriculating students are advised to collect their academic gowns at their faculty Secretariat and check for when they're are scheduled for their Matriculation.

SPEECH DELIVERED BY OLAYIWOLA FOLAHAN FESTUS “REFORM”, THE PRESIDENT, STUDENTS’ UNION, OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY, AT THE INUAGURATION/SWEARING-IN CEREMONY OF THE ELECTED STUDENTS’ UNION OFFICERS ON TUESDAY, 8 MARCH 2022, AT AMPHITHEATRE, OAU, ILE-IFE

The Visitor, the Chancellor, the Pro-Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, the Dean of Division of Student Affairs, all other principal officers of the University, guests, academic and non-academic staff unions, groups, the press, ever conscious, vigilante and progressive Great Ife students; all protocols duly observed.

I want to thank Almighty God for making this day a reality. There are countless reasons for my thanksgiving but I want to state two out of them. For one, thanking God for this day is informed by certain occurrences in the past six months which have made it seem as though today would never come. Another reason is that, ladies and gentlemen, it is exactly 5 years and 2 days since the previous President of Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University delivered his inaugural speech. My wish, hope and prayer is that may we continue to witness a day like this every session.

There is no doubt that today will go down in the history of the Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University (Great Ife Students’ Union) as, so far, the end of the longest of beginnings in the Students’ Union. Beyond the popular and the unpopular stories and heresies of the past six months, the most important thing is to reclaim and sustain the values and philosophies that bespeak us as IFE (Intellectual Fighters for Emancipation), the culture that makes us an enviable academic lineage of honorable men and women within and outside Nigeria.

The mantle of leadership that I and other officers of the Union officially take up today is a generational assignment, a major yet microcosmic instance of leadership from which the over 30 000 students of this University have impatiently and laboriously waited to benefit from. I daresay that the impatience is true, by extension, for all other Nigerian students and Nigerians who directly or indirectly benefit from our Union’s valiant pursuit of a better and open society. The uneasy wait is over.

In his essential work, The Wretched of the Earth, renowned political philosopher, Frantz Omar Fanon, wrote: “Each generation, must, out of relative obscurity, discover its mission, fulfill it, or betray it”. The underlying message of this quote makes me wakeful. It has made me ask myself several questions. I ask myself, what this generation that I belong to is. I ask myself what our mission is and if we have discovered it. I ask myself if we are fulfilling it or betraying it.

My endless but critical ruminations and observations have not failed to provide me results. I am convinced that this generation is a generation of game changers, innovators, exemplary leaders; men and women who will leave indelible marks on the sands of time. But these are not the only attributes of this generation. This generation is, in spite of its wealth of creativity and brilliance, a generation of youths who are challenged on all spheres of life. This generation is one that is laboriously growing in an atmosphere toxically charged with economic, political, religious, ethnic tensions.

Without mincing words, the mission of this generation is not undiscovered. The mission of this generation is to primarily wean itself off the challenges that confront it. The secondary assignment of this generation is to become the genesis of a better society and a beacon of hope for those coming after it. However, none of these can happen without education. As Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.

Ladies and gentlemen, obviously, this generation has not fulfilled its mission. Yet, it cannot be said that this generation has failed its mission. The fulfillment or the failure of the mission of this generation is going to be a product of our collective efforts, including that of the older generation. But, I must say, that by virtue of the trust that the students of this University reposed in me and other Students’ Union officers in the widely adjudged freest and fairest OAU Students’ Union elections held in August and September 2021 (over six months ago), the students of this University have done one important part of the job of fulfilling the mission. While the cooperation of Union members will be needed at every point in this journey, the bulk of work lies with us the elected Students’ Union officers and the authorities of this University. And it is on this note that I will go into explicating some of the problems that I and my team have noted and owe the students of this University the solving of them:

STUDENT WELFARE

A minister and renowned author, Myles Munroe, in his seminal book, In Pursuit of Purpose, said: “When the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable”. I want to state it here clearly for those who are here now and those whom history will extend my words, that one of the major purposes of any union is to, where lacking, retrieve the welfare of its members, sustain and improve it. The Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo recognizes student welfare as its purpose and for the said purpose, it shall stand intolerant of any abuse of power or resources that undermine the welfare of students.

When the welfare of students on OAU campus is discussed, certain issues come to mind more easily:

A. Transportation:

One of the major challenges we encounter on OAU campus is transportation problem. The transporters have at different times taken the advantage of the absence of Students’ Union to extort and exploit students with indiscriminate hike of fares. It is rudely surprising that many of them have still not come to term with the reinstatement of the Students’ Union and the powers it has to kick against all hike, extortion, and all other inconveniences they put students in. Some of them now have the effrontery to even go as far as harassing and assaulting students. It is time these issues stopped.

Solving the transportation problems is not by quick fixes. One of the best ways to address this issue is for the university to release all Students’ Union busses that are in their possession to us. We will run an independent Students’ Union transport system with lesser transport prices, especially when students are unceremoniously left stranded by transporters as some of them did on February 23 this year. Of course, my team and I are open to more ways of resolving the problems.

The current transportation issues on campus have prompted us come up with reasonable but temporary prices per destination on campus. We currently have enforcement teams in place to check anyone who violates the price list. These teams will work with all relevant authorities within the Students’ Union and the University at large. I am confident that with all our efforts harnessed at solving the transportation problems, we shall overcome.

B. Academic Welfare:

The primary goal of students of OAU is to graduate in flying colours. However, this is fast becoming nearly impossible for so many students. It is not often that students do not want to excel, it is that the system frustrates their efforts. There have been several reports of laboratories in bad condition, victimization, compromised tests, late release of results, and lecture theatres unconducive to learning, to mention but some of the problems. The internal and external strikes continue to be academic impediments for students. It is no wonder that our university that used to top rankings before now struggles to rank closer to some Nigerian and foreign universities it used to outclass.

The Students’ Union will optimally use its academic committee to cater for students’ academic welfare. The committee shall focus on taking active roles in bettering the academic welfare of students. The Students’ Union will be taking preventive and corrective measures to address the issues. Bound by the Code of Conduct of the University and other legal internal and external instruments, the Union, through its officers, fixes its eagle eyes on all persons concerned, from teaching to testing to grading and releasing of results, to ensure a better academic welfare for students.

C. Health Centre

The health centre delivery is not satisfactorily enough. The Students’ Union, in a bid to take active part in upping the healthcare system, shall establish the Students’ Union Health Committee. This committee is meant to work with the health center and other relevant authorities to receive complaints from students, amongst others. The Union will, in resolving any issue, explore all options. The Union expects openness, regards and a high level of responsibility from health workers. Health is wealth, they say; let us collectively not waste this irreplaceable blessing. There shall be no tolerance for anything contrary. 

D. Buttery

It is now commonplace on OAU campus that some butteries extort students by selling commodities at high prices compared to what is obtainable at market. We have challenged some of them in the past and we will not relent in our effort to compel them to sell at even prices. The Welfare Director, whose office shall be actively involved in all issues earlier raised, shall also gallantly lead the efforts here. A committee that he heads will enforce the union regulated prices and address matters arising from the butteries.

E. Accommodation

Getting a comfortable accommodation is one of the most difficult challenges that students face. Students have been exposed to many problems, in their efforts to secure accommodation, especially off campus. There are numerous issues of extortion, harassment, insecurity, theft, all because students are looking for comfortable places to stay. The Students’ Union will not fold its arms while Union members suffer in the hands of agents and landlords.

Just recently, the Students’ Union lost another of its members – Heritage Ajibola. Heritage fell into a septic tank at her hostel, Bvers Suites. The accident which claimed her life was preventable but, with what has been discovered, the Management of the Suites were lacking in properly maintaining a safe environment. For Heritage Ajibola, justice must be done!

The Students’ Union has noted that it is imperative to wade in on issues of welfare of students not only campus but also off campus. There are many extortionist landlords and agents around. The Union will take adequate measures to check them. Anyone that fails to yield to our consultative and consolidating efforts is choosing our confrontation.

SECURITY

For over two decades, OAU holds the record of having a cultism-free campus; this record must not be allowed to break. This is a legacy we enjoy on OAU campus today, thanks to our comrades past. This must be religiously protected for the succeeding generations to benefit from. We implore the Security Department of this University to not relent in its efforts. Beyond and around OAU campus, it is public knowledge that safety of lives and properties is gravitating towards being an unaffordable commodity.

The Security Committee of the Students’ Union, under my watch, shall vigilantly work to keep our dear campus even safer for students. It is indeed worrisome that we continue to record cases of stolen phones, laptop and other gadgets. Theft is now rampant on campus. The Security Committee will ensure that, if not eliminated, the crimes will be fought to a logical end.

As a union, in matters of security, ours is a long list of partners to work with. Our first partnership remains with the members of our union whose sense of collective responsibility and personal vigilance will assist the union in discharging its duties. We shall work with Nigeria Police Force, Director of State Security and other sister agencies to tackle all security issues within and also, very importantly, off campus.

I must not forget to mention that Mr Adegoke Timothy’s death is a tragedy that the Union cannot get over without seeing done for him. The Students’ Union is keenly watching the process of getting justice for the late gentleman. Our stand remains the same: anyone responsible for the death of Mr Timothy Adegoke must face the wrath of the law.

A. Zero Tolerance To Cultism

OAU as an anti-cultist institution is not an accident. Some of our past heroes paid the supreme price that make us enjoy peace and tranquility on campus. The memories of July 10 1999 Massacre continues to linger on. The gruesome killing of the then Secretary-General of the Union and four other Union members has become an unintended and hurtful sacrifice that our community paid men and women of the underworld. We cannot afford to see them invade our campus again.

It is the fact that we do not have to fear that there some unwanted elements lurking in the dark that all of us, men and women, can traverse this beautiful campus at any time of the day and night. Hardly is there any other higher institution of learning that shares this glory with Great Ife. We must see it as the duty of our lives to keep is a cultism-free campus.

It is not that cult-like activities have not been discovered over the years; it is that such activities have always been repelled. I want to say here, Great Ife, Articulate Ife; that Great Ife remains Great Ife; there shall be no entertaining cultism in my time. Anyone here or elsewhere who nurtures such thoughts as championing cultism on OAU campus should discard such thoughts. You cannot stand the wrath of Ife.

B. Assault And Sexual Harassment

The motto of our University proclaims it as a place of learning and culture. It is highly condemnable that anyone would engage in such socially unacceptable behaviors as assault and sexual harassment in our campus. In this intellectual space we all occupy, no one must introduce hooliganism under any pretext. The Union condemns at all criminal activities, including assault and sexual harassment. It is great that the University has an Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy in place but even greater is to see the full enforcement of the policy at all times.

Greatest Ife, Articulate Ife, let us be reminded that Great Ife students do not engage in physical combat. We are IFE - Intellectual Fighters for Emancipation. From experience, most of the students experience physical attack from transporters and menial workers on campus. To those who have taken physical assault and bullying as their hobby, we say to you today, “Time up!”. And if you do not listen now and you continue in the act, our piece of aluta all oppression for you is coming to discipline you and give you the Great Ife senses.

Before I round up, I will like to wish all women here and all over the world a Happy International Women's Day. Indeed women are phenomenal. The elders say “obinrin ni iyo aye” – women are the salt of the world. This saying is a pointer to the essence and importance of women. May the world be kinder to women.

CONCLUSION

My aim is to protect all the students and defend our constitutional right as enshrined in the Great Ife Students’ Union constitution and University code of conduct. I will stand for and uphold at all times the principle of rule of law and also display all levels of transparency and accountability which is the bedrock of democratic Unionism. I will offer leadership driven by empathy and capacity, strength and sagacity, faith, hope and confidence. I will not be indifferent or turn a blind eye to real concerns of Great Ife students.

For me, the union we deserve is one that will be a source of pride to all Great Ife Students, one that will be respected and admired in other Universities across Nigeria, Africa and the world. It should be a union that can hold its own and stand tall anywhere in the world.

The inauguration and swearing in ceremony  of the students'  union Officers held 8th of March,2022 at Afrika Amphi Theatre. students came to express their joy and celebrate with the newly inaugurated officers of the Students' Union.

Speaking to ACJOAU correspondent, the  PRO of the union Comrade Ogunperi Taofeek Olalekan, Tao said, "I contested because i recognized the fact that there's a communication gap between the University authority and the students and one of his agenda bridge the gap between the students and the University authority" 

The PRO  further said that he's working on communication channel from traditional one to the new media, to ensure students get information, not only promptly but correctly.  He also promised to give out correct information to students no matter the pressure or external influence either from the management or any body that may surround it as he called himself an "image maker" and can never and will never yield to external factors as his allegiance is to students alone. 

Speaking on the issue of dissemination of fake news, he said, "as the spread of fake news cannot be prevented,the best thing to do is to have an official website that can be trusted by the students to give out not accurate but prompt information" 

He also assured the students that has interest in broadcast journalism as mass communication seems to be an approved course on campus now,that if there is going to be a need to form an alliance with the school's radio station (Great FM) to help students grow in that platform and build up their career, he as the PRO would make it happen.

Speaking on the Great Ife Students' Union social media handles, the PRO said, "if not for the unfortunate incident of October 1st 2020, "i had already planned on releasing official handles of the union and was waiting for this moment even while waiting i still tried to do something, and the official handles of the Union will be released in couples of hours"

Speaking further on how he planned to work with ACJOAU he said , " I think i am the closest officer to ACJ because i am the PRO and i am going to be  the chairman of the press committee which  means he will be talking to the Press much more than anybody else". As an independent body on Campus, ACJ comes in as a partner in progress and working together officially is for progress and not to politicize ACJ in the dissemination of information from the union to the students.

Lastly, there is the usual tradition of giving out information to the students on campus which is the physical means of going to different halls of residence, the PRO promised to use numerous platforms to disseminate accurate information including the physical means as students would tend to trust them more if the information were been given out physically other than the virtual means though he would use both the digital and domestic channels of reaching out to the students. "We can't sit in Sub and project information, i have been meaning to go out and give official and physical announcement"

I Want Them To Concentrate On The Welfare Of All Students And Not Some Personal Aggrandizement: OAU VC To Union Officers

Tuesday, 8th of March, 2022 is a day to be remembered amongst the students of Obafemi Awolowo University as the Students' Union Officers were finally  inaugurated and swore into office after six months of waiting.

It was a large ceremony held at the Afrika Amphitheater where students came to express their joy and celebrate with the newly inaugurated officers of the Students' Union.

Speaking to ACJOAU correspondent, the Vice-chancellor of the institution, Prof. Eyitope  Ogunbodede, with regards to the newly inaugurated Students Union. He expressed his delight over the event where he said, "this is the first time in the history of OAU where the SU election went smoothly without a petition".

Speaking further, he said "On our side as management, we have also tried to introduce some kind of leadership training in some of these things we are doing which we think can assist”. He mentioned that  Student Union is very different from what it used to be before, hence, people have to learn for the progress of the universities.

About the ASUU strike, the VC mentioned that the management was not happy about this plight, saying, "but we're happy that the students are still benefitting despite all the happenings”. 

Concerning the current division between lecturers in the  university, he said "when I entered this university, I knew exactly when I was going to graduate and I graduated the very time I was supposed to graduate, not a day later, and that is what I want for my students”

He made  mentioned of  his expectations for the current Student Union, saying, "what I expect from them is something that will be of benefit to all students, I want them to concentrate on the welfare of all students and not some personal aggrandizement or promoting themselves and things like that”

He expressed his thoughts warning the SU not to be very careful to avoid being sucked into the general political space in the country. He said, "this is Student Union and it's not based on political parties and they must see it that way”.

He had concluded the interview saying ”I have decided to come here because this is very important to me, so you have to prioritize... we are building the future and whatever you do can make or mar the progress and future of quite a number of students, so you're not just leading yourself, you're leading 30,000 students and whatever you do can either promote them or permanently damage them and this, to me, is very important and that is why we're all here”.

Throughout My Tenure, The Constitution Will Be Strictly Adhered To- Speaker SRC GISU

Six months after the Great ife Students' Union Election which Cut across the HEC, CEC, and SRC produce leader in every arms of the government. The long anticipated inauguration and swearing in of the Students' union Representatives held today at the Africa Amphitheatre and it remains a good news that the union has been reinstated officially and can now commence their duties.

Speaking to ACJOAU correspondents the Speaker of the SRC RT, Hon. Ajadi Toheeb speaks on how he feels about the swearing in and the things he wants to put in place as he assumes his office. 

In his words,he expressed his joy on having the union back in board "The inauguration is something we all have been waiting for. There are series of challenges our Union had experienced before now and thank God we had our inauguration today and now union is back" 

Speaking on how he intends to keep the executive arm in check, he said "of course, the speaker of the house is the custodian of the Great Ife students' union sacrosanct Constitution and it is my responsibility to ensure that all SU officers discharge their duties in accordance with the Constitution"

Speaking further, on how he would handle the case of an honorable that is defaulting and what sanctions would be placed on such honorable. He said "My responsibility is to ensure that any activity the union will engage in will be in line will the provision of the Constitution"

The speaker reiterated that , throughout his time in office, he would ensure that the Constitution is strictly adhered to and no action would be taken outside the Constitution.

Breaking: OAU Postpones Matriculation Till Further Notice

The obafemi Awolowo University has postponed the 2021/2022 Matriculation ceremony which was earlier scheduled for Wednesday 9th March, 2022 until further notice. 

In a release made available to OAU Peeps News Agency by the University Spokesman Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju confirms that the matriculation has postponed and students are hereby advised to continue attending their lectures and other academics activities. 

The Statement reads thus: 

The authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, have postponed the 2021/2022 Matriculation ceremony,  earlier scheduled for Wednesday, 9th March, 2022, until further notice.

A release by the Director, Academic Affairs, Mr. Murtala Agbaje, and made available by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that the new day and date will be communicated to the general public, especially to those concerned in due course.

The University Management has decided to postpone the Matriculation ceremony in the interest all.  We, therefore, apologise for any inconvenience  this postponement might have caused.

Students are, hereby, advised to continue attending their lectures and other academic activities.

The Transportation Dilemma On Campus: Who Is To Be Blamed?

The hike in transportation prices around the OAU community has become a sore topic for all students of this great institution, especially for the large percentage of the student populace that stays off campus.

Even when the prices of transportation were not this high, students were struggling to pay the transportation prices. After the increase in hostel prices off campus, it seems the spirit of extortion has spread from hostel owners to the motorcyclists and bus drivers.

They do not understand the basic fact that we are students, and a large number of these students do not have the financial means to meet up to these excessive prices. Speaking with some of these motorcyclists and bus drivers, they are not even remotely apologetic, showing that they have little to no care about the students and our well-being.

They need to understand the fact that most students are still receiving money from their parents and there are self-sponsors as well. The little pocket money received from parents is still used to pay the outrageous transport fare. Taking a look at a student who stays in Mayfair, after paying huge money for rent, will still have to pay #200 to go to campus everyday, #1000 if he goes to school five days a week and that's #5000 a month. Let's assume he was sent #10000 every month, so HALF of his monthly allowance will go to transport fare every month and it might even be more than that. How do you expect such a person to feed? And we are crying that the number of yahoo boys on campus is increasing daily. For those staying in areas like Damico or Modomo where you almost always have to get a motorcycle to carry you to campus gate, the price is even more!

Not every student is from a rich home, and even if we are, are we expected to be spending money anyhow? This issue is making most students to start looking for accommodation on campus which is not provided since the spaces in hostels of residence are not enough. 

The Union of motorcyclists and bus drivers will be ready to say that the hike in price is as a result of increase in fuel price and scarcity as well. Looking at it, if we decide to calculate all the profits they will make if they don't increase transportation price and increase only the number of passengers, it will cover up for the hike in fuel price. But now, they increased the transportation fare and they still carry 4 passengers per seat which is not fair AT ALL! Most students have decided to start stabbing some classes due to increase in transportation price. What consequences does this pose to the students' academics in general? 

Ife should be a student community, but it often feels like it is an area where the locals try as hard as they can to extort students and make them feel as uncomfortable as possible. 

Whose fault is it now, the transporters or the school who fail to provide enough accommodation? Or do we go all the way up the ladder and blame the President of our great country Nigeria? I mean, if there was no fuel scarcity, then the prices might not have been increased. But knowing how Ife bus drivers and motorcyclists work, it was only a matter of time before all these prices were increased. Is it not just last year that the price of bus movement from campus gate to campus was increased to #50. How much longer before we have to start paying double that?

It is with a heavy heart that I write this article because I am witnessing the plight of so many students. This excessive milking of OAU students for theirs and their parents’ hard-earned money needs to stop!

Driver Who Assaulted A Student Banned From OAU Campus For Two Weeks

Following the  assault of a student from the department of Quantity Survey, the driver with the plate number DTN 869 XA (OSUN) has been banned from working on OAU campus for the next two weeks. 

Recall it was earlier reported by OAU Peeps News Agency that a driver assaulted a student on Wednesday, 2 March 2022 and the Great Ife Students' Union has made it known that tougher approach will be used to make sure that the driver is punished. 

In a Press Statement made available from the office of the PRO-Elect, Comrade Ogunperi Taofeek Olalekan, Tao has made it known that the driver has been banned from OAU Campus for two weeks, paid a sum of ten thousand naira for medical bills of the assaulted student and also write a letter of apology to the student which include the avowal that he will never perpetuate such socially unacceptable behavior again. 

The Union however commend the security department of the Union and the Leadership of the driver's association for their cooperation in ensuring that the assailant driver was brought to book. 

Union members are however encouraged to always draw the attention of the Union to any issue which may undermine their welfare and safety and were assured that their welfare and safety are paramount interest of the Union and the Union shall always do its best at ensuring them.   

Between FASA and SATIRE, Who Won?

Over the last few months, silence has been a dominating feature of the Faculty of Arts Students’ Association even when the association doesn’t have an administration and also amidst corruption allegations.

However, their consciousness has resurrected after a few lines of satirical paragraph directed to the leader (s) of a faction (s) in the association went viral.

To begin with, some students who found it complicated to decipher the satirical part of the story which has generated this uncontrollable uproar has only proven the widespread claim that the association only boast of orientation but is not oriented. And any student who writes to counter the above will do a favour of “further acknowledgement”.

With the uproar that the article garnered, it is easy to deduce that FASAites have a lot to unveil, the rationale behind their silence remains blurry. How will students of one of the acclaimed politically oriented associations be silent when their voices need to be heard?

Daily, FASAites have always demanded accountability in silence. They murmur the mismanagement of the administration of that time (2019/2020) while they continually cannot have their voice heard. “For how long will FASAites remain mute and watch as the association deteriorates?” This question birthed the SATIRE.

 

The Faculty of Arts Student Association will only need to prove its status subsequently for a few lines paragraphs of SATIRE has revealed how fragile her mightiness has become.

To the “pro-corruption faction” who celebrated the innocence of their leader, it is high time they revisit the definition of SATIRE. To the “anti-corruption” faction who understood the SATIRE, this is a win for the progress of FASA.

On this note, like Muhammad Ali, SATIRE has stung the face of FASA. Make-up or bleaching oil can not garnish this face again, except there is an instantaneous change.

Students' Union To Take Tougher Approach At Ensuring Assailant Town-Igboro Driver Is Punished

The Great Ife Students' Union has made their stand on the town-igboro driver that assaulted a student of the department of quantity survey on Wednesday, 2 March 2022. 

Recall it was earlier reported by OAU Peeps News Agency that a town-igboro driver assaulted a student after failing to drop him at the agreed destination which they agreed on before leaving Banking Area. 

In a Press Release that was made available to OAU Peeps News Agency, the union  the report of a   student that was assaulted by a Town-Igboro driver. 

The Union in its statement said: "This afternoon, the Students' Union received the disturbing report of a Town-Igboro driver assaulting a student. The Students' Union condemns totally this uncivil and destructive behavior of the said driver. The Union considers this as a red flag for the peace of our University community and especially the safety of Union members that must not be taken with levity.

From the accounts of the victim, the Union has gathered that there were altercations over transportation issues between the driver and the students he was conveying in his bus from Bank Area to AP. The driver, because of the altercations, decided to drop all the students at Mayfair. Because of this driver's behavior, the student assaulted said he photographed the plate number of the bus for the purpose of reporting what the driver did. The student was afterwards threatened so that he could delete the photograph. Seeing that he refused to delete it, the driver assaulted the student with three punches in the face.

The assaulted student came to SUB, still hurting from the pains inflicted on him by the driver. Based on the report and the evidence of assault already photographed, the Union immediately conducted a search at the bus stops to fish out the driver but he had absconded. The Union has since then mandated the drivers' association to provide the said driver.

For the Students' Union, failure of the drivers' association to provide the assailant driver is tantamount to provoking the Students' Union to take a tougher approach at ensuring that the driver is adequately punished for the assault he perpetuated. The Union insists on and is working towards swiftly ensuring that the assailant is punished."

Town-Igboro Driver Assaults Student

A Quantity surveying student, Siyanbola Pelumi, of Obafemi Awolowo University narrated his unfortunate encounter with a bus driver today Tuesday, 2nd March 2022.

In his report, he narrated how a bus driver with the plate number Osun DTN-869XA gave him three blows on his face after snapping his plate number for refusing to drop him at the agreed destination.

In his statement he said, "I have been hearing of students been assaulted by Drivers and bike men, today I was a victim..

I boarded a bus from Banking area calling A.P/MAYFAIR, which I entered going to A.P.

The man in an aggressive and unrespectful manners have had different nonchalant and unimpressive conversation with students in the bus, which he even said different words against the SU Officers and the students at large anytime  the students complained about the inconveniences they have been making students passed through.

On getting to Mayfair the man in an aggressive manner told the passengers that he is not going to A.P again that he will drop everyone at Mayfair. On hearing this, immediately stood against it and that led to an arguement between myself and the bus driver. He  turned back at Parakin Junction at Mayfair.

Furthermore, immediately I alighted, I gave him his money and took a picture of the bus plate number, he came  down  from the bus threatening me to delete the picture I already took, where I told  him I won't, he even threaten to break my phone. The next thing I heard was blows on my face, imagine, *Three blows on my face*.. I decided to be diplomatic and had severe arguement with the man without any physical contact.

After the whole brouhaha in town, I came back to the SU building to make report of the whole scenario. We have since been looking for the man on  campus but all to no avail .

If this man is seen any where please do well to get to the S.U. executives or the Security committees.. HE IS NOW DECLARE WANTED

Speaking to our Correspondent, Mr Niyi a town-igboro driver said the case is been taken care of by the town-igboro drivers' association as the chairman has went to town to settle the case and to make sure the culprit is dealt with according to the law of the association which bound even bus drivers to fight themselves talkless of fighting students. 

When asked if the issue will be brought to the students' Union building, he said it won't as adequate punishment will be passed on him and he might not be chanced to enter campus again. 

Take It Back Campus Movement Express Disappointment In Union Officers

Due  to the rate at which price exploitation on campus has increased, coupled with sudden hike of transportation fees and ASUU strike, a press statement was released by the "TAKE IT BACK CAMPUS WING MOVEMENT, OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY BRANCH, ILE-IFE"  during the early hours of Wednesday, 2nd March, 2022  calling out the union to come out and fight for the rights of the students and stop hiding behind the guise of “ELECT”. The Statement of the Press Release read thus:

"No doubt, this present days has been so harsh on the Great Ife Students', with a sudden hike on the transportation fee, increase in commodity prices, and to worsen the matter, ASUU strike. These are very hard times which calls for an action from the Great Ife Students' Union, however, unfortunately, the union has become so handicapped that it can't even help matters.

It is disappointing, that while students are made to face hardships like this, we have union leaders who can not exhibit the purpose for which they were elected by students, on the excuse of not being inaugurated. Great Ife Students' Union leaders have been making use of the title "elect" for months now and have being hiding like a baby behind this title to run away from her duty. We find this so unfortunate that students are being left to cater for themselves.

Recently, we felt a little glimpse of light was about to show on the state of the union, when we started seeing a release claiming the Union leaders will be inaugurated on March 3,2022 - at least we will do away with the excuse of "elect". Only until today, the Association of Campus Journalists, in a news, reported that the inauguration had been postponed, funny enough, it was postponed with no definite date!.

This is a total mockery of the Great Ife Students' Union, that in a time like this where Students are in dire need of their union, to take prompt actions on matters that are affecting them, the management refuse to speed up the inauguration of leaders that were duly elected by students into different positions. The postponement is condemned in all ramifications and we enjoined the Great Ife Students to speak up against this.

However, it is also important to display, without mincing word, a total disappointment in the union leaders who have failed woefully in representing the union. In a time where  union of other universities are making release concerning ASUU strike, we have union leaders who do not deem it fit to make any progressive stand over the ASUU strike, not even a single release to intimate Students about why some lecturers are on strike and why some are not and provide way forward in that line. We have a union who could not demand Justice for Heritage and cowardly, buried down the justice cry for Heritage, Great Ife, we have union leaders who stylishly avoid having intellectual engagement with the bus drivers over the sudden hike in the transportation price. To mention but little, are the countless exhibit of incapacity that this union leaders have displayed, all ok the excuse of "elect".

We hope to make it clear to the union leaders, that the students do not invest their precious time to vote them in, only for them to start hiding under the "elect" title, hence avoiding struggles that needs their actions. Great Ife Students need their union now, more than ever, and we need a vibrant union that will represent us boldly, not a toothless union!.

We encourage students to stat calling out their elected honorables out in different faculty and department, pointing out their failures right into their face. The Union is our strength and as our strength, it can't be week.

Let's not forget the words of Frantz Fanon that said "Every Generation, out of relative obscurity, finds it's mission, to betray it or to fulfil it".

Speaking to our correspondent the PRO Elect of the Union, Comrade Ogunperi Taofeek Olalekan, Tao said  "The elected officers of the Union have not been hiding. You will recall that we have been making various efforts about issues that concern students, including but not only welfare and security issues. We have made several and widely circulated releases on those issues. All such releases can be found on the Telegram channel of the Students' Union (https://t.me/greatifestudentsunion). 

Particularly, on the issue of transportation, not only have we been able to put in place an instant solution, which is the provision of a ₦30 Marcopolo bus which helped eliminate the transportation impasse, we have actually regulated the costs of transportation of motorcycles which had gone as high as ₦250 before. Yes, we know there are still many problems to resolve on transportation, especially with the Town-Igboro drivers. We did acknowledge this in our most recent release published on Sunday, 27 February 2022 (please check).

We are not relenting in our efforts. We are not hiding. We are doing all that we do, regardless of the fact that inauguration has not been done, using our resources because we are committed to upholding the mandate the students gave us, despite all challenges that doing so come with. For us, there is no compromising the principles and cultures of our esteemed Union."

Students' Union Inauguration And Swearing Ceremony New Date Revealed

The Electoral Commission of the  Great Ife Student's Union has announced the new date for the inauguration and swearing in of the elected officers. 

Recall that  it was earlier reported by OAUPeeps News Agency that the inauguration date which was earlier stated for 3rd of March, 2022 has been postponed and a new date will be communicated shortly. 

However, in a statement made available to the OAU Peeps News Agency by the Electoral Commision of the Union. The inauguration and swearing-in ceremony of the Union Officers will now hold on Tuesday, 8th March 2022 at Afrika Amphitheater by 12:00PM Prompt.  

FASAOAU: Is It True That The President Embezzled?

The road to FASA remains dusty.

 Tell those who wish to tread this path to avoid putting on white garments.

Otherwise, they should be ready to get dirty.

When there is fire on the mountain, what’s foreseen of anyone is to either find a panacea or abscond. Here, what they do is maintain a “siddon look” stance as the fire munches deeper while they comfortably patronise beer parlours and lavish the limited resources that are not theirs on “shapes and bottles”. A financial boost for the seller, but to the detriment of the progress of a larger audience, the students.

The puzzle besieging the Faculty of Arts Students’ Association, Obafemi Awolowo University, has invariably inflicted a headache for the genius that even a typical student wouldn’t try cracking. A friend who has lost hope in the association would always say, “This puzzle doesn’t deserve our Time “. To me, it is worth whatever time we have dedicated to demanding a change. 

We can no longer afford unnecessary postponement of elections at the expense of limited resources, which the association can direct to a productive cause. It has to stop. As the world develops, civilization refines culture, and so,  if not conducting an election once is the norm, we can easily improvise to not conducting at all. 

The association gets praised for being politically oriented, with an outstanding record of participation within and beyond. Meanwhile, the praise, to me, is just irony. You know, students are productively busy these days; they have got a lot to do that, they would unrepentantly call Buhari “Putin” just to have their way. So, what’s the honour of being politically inclined while everything has always ended inadequately?

“Godfatherism” 

“Godfatherism” has always been an existing imbroglio in the political terrain of Nigeria. It’s a problem that has spread across all levels, including FASAOAU. While Osun APC is having a hard time because a godson wants to become a godfather, there are also claims that FASAOAU is an abode for graduates who won’t stop tampering with the political configuration of the association. Obviously, they have programmed the association in a certain way that debugging would seem impossible soon. They are political leaders and they have plenty of sons and daughters in the faculty.

During elections, there are permutations from one department to another, and the thought would be that it is for the progress of the association. However, circumstances have proven that whatever permutations taking place in the association is not always in the interest of the students but those who don’t want to leave the Association and their godsons and daughters.

Is It True That Our President Embezzled?

Seriously, I don’t know why students have tarnished the image of our darling President. They claim that he has embezzled, yet they could not prove it. What is wrong with FASAites? When are they going to realize that our president is as holy as a Nigerian politician? Yes, Nigerian politicians are a truthful set of people. Keeping their campaign promises is the least of their achievements.

Our president has done everything to improve the association by stimulating an atmosphere of unification. He has left it better than he met it. Just that he doesn’t have a successor.
