What We Know So Far About The Attempted Bank Robbery At Lagere

It was an unusual and tense atmosphere earlier today at the surbub area of the ancient town of Ile Ife - Lagere, as suspected armed robbers shot sporadically into the air, in what seems to be an attempt to rob banks in the area. Afterwards, the intervention of the Nigerian police force, Ile-Ife command foiled the attempt, the Police claims.

In a phone convrvsation with OAU Peeps News Agency, Funsho Adegboye, the Ife Area Commander said it was just an attempted robbery.

"There was no attack, it was an attempted robbery based on the information we got from the members of the public which is highly commendable," the Area Commander told us.



"As we got the information, we alerted our officers, we deployed them and we are able to pursue them. On sighting the Police, there was an open fire, in which one of the robbers sustained injury. We are able to dislodge them and we impounded the Toyota Sienna vehicle they brought," he added.

Laying to rest the insinuation that some banks in the area were attacked, a staff of Fidelity Bank who does not want his name in the print because he was not authorised to speak on the development said the bank was not attacked.

Reiterating this, the Ife Area commander confirmed no bank was attacked. He said "the quick intervention of the Police and quick reinforcement of the commissioner of police from Osogbo prevented what could have been a robbery attack. You know banks are concentrated in one area, so they were caught met with resistenace between Diamond and Fidelity banks."



The Police claimed that one of the suspected robbers sustained injury during the gunshot exchange.

The commander also noted that no casualty was recorded as no police officer was either injured or shot.

OAU Peeps also understands through investigation that the suspected robbers earlier lauched an attack around Damico Area, close to campus gate, of which the commander confirmed.

Accounts from eye witnesses who spoke with OAU Peeps confirmed there were gunshots and the suspected robbers later escaped through the Akarabata area of Modakeke town.

Minimum Wage: NLC Suspends Strike

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has called off the nationwide industrial action initially scheduled to commence on November 6 to further press for workers’ demand for new national minimum wage.

The President of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba, said this on Monday night in Abuja while addressing journalists at the end of a meeting of the tripartite committee set up by government to negotiate labour’s demand.

Organised labour had threatened to commence nationwide strike on November 6 should government fail to accede to its N30,000 minimum wage demand. The federal government had offered to pay N24,000 while some state governments are even offering less.

But briefing journalists on Monday night, Mr. Wabba said, “The tripartite negotiating committee this evening concluded its assignment. Agreement has been reached and also documents have been signed. The report will be submitted to Mr. President tomorrow by 4:15pm.

“Therefore, as organised labour, we want to use this medium to thank all the tripartite partners for their understanding and importantly for concluding this very national assignment.

“And having reached this position, and also the fact that the assignment has been concluded, organised labour also decided that the proposed industrial action is hereby suspended.

“Therefore, we thought this should be communicated appropriately without also any delusion or missing information.

“As the chairperson have said, mutual agreements have been reached and this will be make public tomorrow and we must appreciate the roles that organised private sectors have actually demonstrated and the attitude brought to this process and to members of the tripartite negotiating team.”


The Chairperson, Tripartite Committee, Amma Pepple, corroborated Mr Wabba’s claim, saying her committee had reached a truce and concluded its assignment.

“We are going to present our report to Mr President tomorrow at 4:15pm and he will reveal the figure that we have recommended,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, commended members of the committee for their time and commitment to the long and tortuous negotiation processes.

“I am confident that government will give expeditious consideration of the report tomorrow by Mr President and very soon the processes will be put in place to truly actualise your recommendations so that the status of our working populace will be enhanced and they would receive appropriate and commensurate payments for the services they offer to our nation and to the different sectors of our economy,” he said.

Government and labour had been at loggerheads over the demand for a new minimum wage. Labour says the minimum wage of N18,000 is paltry and no longer acceptable.

Nigeria Ordered to Pay $244 Million Damages for 1967 Civil War

 

 

Nigeria was ordered to pay 88 billion naira ($244 million) in damages to those affected by a 1967 civil war after failing to clear landmines and other explosives in the country’s southeast.
The government of Africa’s most populous nation must pay 50 billion naira to compensate war victims and a further 38 billion naira to state authorities to help rebuild damaged property, the Economic Community of West African States Court of Justice said Monday.
The three-year conflict was fought between the Nigerian government and the southeast state of Biafra.

NASU, SSANU, NAAT Suspend Strike

The non-teaching staff of Nigerian universities have suspended their strike.

The staff, members of three unions, NASU, SSANU, and NAAT, announced the suspension of the 11 days old strike on Thursday.

Sam Ugwoke, the national president of the Joint Action Committee of three unions, announced the suspension at a media briefing in Abuja.

Mr. Ugwoke said the strike was being suspended for a month to allow the government meet their demands.

He enjoined government to “ensure compliance” with agreements reached with the unions.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how the government and the staff reached an agreement after several hours of meeting in the early hours of Thursday.

At the meeting, a memorandum of understanding was signed with the federal government delegation led by the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige.

Mr. Ngige had earlier said both parties produced “collective agreement of action” after the meeting.

ASUU Strike: Lecturers Reach Agreement With Nigerian Govt

The striking university lecturers, ASUU, have agreed to consider the federal government’s offer and suspend their strike.

The agreement comes after 12 hours, 30 minutes of a closed door meeting between ASUU and a government delegation in Abuja.

The leadership of ASUU, however, said though it accepted the proposal presented by the government, it will take the proposal to its members and get back to the government in a week.

Biodun Ogunyemi, the national president of ASUU, told journalists after the meeting that the union will come back after one week to take its final decisions.

“Now we have some concrete proposal that we will take back to our members for consideration,” he said.
On his part, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, said ASUU’s demands have been addressed and the union will get back to the government in a week after consulting with its principals.

The meeting started 1:38pm on Thursday and ended 2:15 a.m. on Friday.

ASUU Refuses Meeting With Federal Government

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has shunned a meeting scheduled with the Federal Government on Tuesday to address the concerns raised in an earlier agreement between them for which ASUU has been on strike.

ASUU President, Biodun Ogunyemi told newsmen that the education body had submitted a proposal to the federal government and is yet to receive a reply from FG, hence, would not attend any meeting with it until the union gets a reply.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige had called the meeting and those expected were the Ministers of Education and Finance, Mallam Adamu Adamu and Mrs. Kemi Adeosun respectively, Chairman, National Income Salaries and Wages Commission, Executive Secretary National Universities Commission and the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba.

A statement signed by Samuel Olowookere, Deputy Director, Press in the Ministry of Labour and Employment in Abuja had read thus: “In furtherance of efforts at resolving the lingering industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, will tomorrow (today) by noon meet with the President and Executive of ASUU.

“Government delegation at the meeting will include Minister of Education, Minister of Finance, Chairman National Income Salaries and Wages Commission, Executive Secretary National Universities Commission and the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC.

“The minister recalled that ASUU had earlier promised during the last meeting held on Thursday, August 17, 2017, to take the offer of the Federal Government back to its members and get back to the Federal Government within a week. “Senator Chris Ngige calls on ASUU to show good faith as the Federal Government had already demonstrated commitment to addressing the grievances of the Union.”

When Vanguard contacted the National President of ASUU, Prof. Abiodun Ogunyemi, on his phone, yesterday, on the position of the strike, he simply said that the union was still consulting and that whatever was the outcome of the consultation would be made available to the public.

ASUU had declared an indefinite strike two weeks ago, citing FG’s failure to implement agreements reached with the union in 2009.

Ogunyemi, while calling for the strike said during the strike, there shall be no teaching, no examination and no attendance of statutory meetings of any kind in any of the union’s branches across the country.

However, after its meeting on Saturday, Ogunyemi said the body would attend a subsequent meeting only after it has received a reply from the federal government.

He said ASUU had met, discussed the new offer from the FG and submitted a proposal to the government but is yet to receive any response

BROADCAST BY PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI, MONDAY, AUGUST 21, 2017

My dear citizens,

I am very grateful to God and to all Nigerians for their prayers. I am pleased to be back on home soil among my brothers and sisters.

2. In the course of my stay in the United Kingdom, I have been kept in daily touch with events at home. Nigerians are robust and lively in discussing their affairs, but I was distressed to notice that some of the comments, especially in the social media have crossed our national red lines by daring to question our collective existence as a nation. This is a step too far.

3. In 2003 after I joined partisan politics, the late Chief Emeka Ojukwu came and stayed as my guest in my hometown Daura. Over two days we discussed in great depth till late into the night and analyzed the problems of Nigeria. We both came to the conclusion that the country must remain one and united.

4. Nigeria's unity is settled and not negotiable. We shall not allow irresponsible elements to start trouble and when things get bad they run away and saddle others with the responsibility of bringing back order, if necessary with their blood.

5. Every Nigerian has the right to live and pursue his business anywhere in Nigeria without let or hindrance.

6. I believe the very vast majority of Nigerians share this view.

7. This is not to deny that there are legitimate concerns. Every group has a grievance. But the beauty and attraction of a federation is that it allows different groups to air their grievances and work out a mode of co-existence.

8. The National Assembly and the National Council of State are the legitimate and appropriate bodies for national discourse.

9. The national consensus is that, it is better to live together than to live apart.

10. Furthermore, I am charging the Security Agencies not to let the successes achieved in the last 18 months be a sign to relax.

11. Terrorists and criminals must be fought and destroyed relentlessly so that the majority of us can live in peace and safety.

12. Therefore we are going to reinforce and reinvigorate the fight not only against;

· elements of Boko Haram which are attempting a new series of attacks on soft targets

· kidnappings, farmers versus herdsmen clashes,

· in addition to ethnic violence fuelled by political mischief makers. We shall tackle them all.

13. Finally, dear Nigerians, our collective interest now is to eschew petty differences and come together to face common challenges of;

· economic security,

· political evolution and integration

· as well as lasting peace among all Nigerians.

University Students Protest Unfair Treatment By Lecturers

Students of the Federal University, Oye - Ekiti on Monday staged a serious protest in the university environment. The students accused Dr. Dosu Malomo , who is the Ag. Dean of  Students ’ Affairs in the university to have been collecting N500 each from some students for tutorials without issuing them receipts.
The main gate of the university was barricaded to protest against the extortion by lecturers in the institution.

The blocking of the main gate of the institution prevented the academic and non-academic staff members from entering the campus and also destabilises normal activities.

As part of the students' protest, they also  demanded that the institution authorities put necessary machinery in motion that would facilitate the conduct of student union elections.

The speaker of the student representative council, Victor Akinnibosun then that they students' will not sit for the 2016/2017 second semester examinations until the SUG was inaugurated. The students also demanded for the immediate removal of Dr Malomo and the reinstatement and extension of the tenure of the outgoing Dean , Students ’ Affairs, Dr Olugbenga Adeyemi.

While the protest was still ongoing,  Akinnibosun and Dr Olugbenga Adeyemi jointly briefed the students on some resolutions reached after a brief meeting has been held between the duo and the university management. They said that the meeting had agreed to extend the tenure of Adeyemi as Dean, Students Affairs until the end of 2017.

The management also promised to refund the alleged money collected from students for tutorials from Tuesday, July 25, and the conduct of student union election in the next three weeks.

Dr Adeyemi advised the protesters to go back to their hostels and homes in peace and return for normal lectures on Tuesday.
The gate to the institution was later opened for business of the day around noon .

Court Orders Forfeiture Of Properties Of Former Nigerian Petroleum Minister

A Federal High Court based in Lagos State has ordered the interim forfeiture of an estate in Banana Island area of the Lagos state linked to former Minister of Petroleum, Mrs Deizani Alison Madueke.

According to reports, Mrs Diezani and her cronies have fraudulently siphoned about $11Billion from offshore processing agreements (OPAs) popularly known as oil swap. The report also stated that during her stay in office, Nigeria lost about $50 billion in the petroleum sector.

The court also ordered the forfeiture of money that been fraudulently siphoned by the former Minister during her stay in office.

Justice Chuka Obiozor who presided over the case made the forfeiture order after listening to an exparte application brought by the Head of Legal of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) Mr Anselm Ozioko.

A directive has also been given to the EFCC to publish the court orders in newspapers so that any interested party who does not want the money to be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government could appear in court within 14 days.

Reports also made it known that the former minister will be ready to name over 200 accomplices who helped and participated in the alleged fraud.

The case was adjourned to August 7, 2017 for anyone interested in the property and funds to appear before him.

Kogi State Governor Threatens KSU With Sack Letter

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has announced the proscription of the Kogi State chapter of the Academic staff union of Universities (ASUU) with immediate effect.
The governor announced the proscription on Wednesday after an emergency State Executive committee meeting.
He then called for an immediate resumption of lecturers to academic activities or be sacked with immediate effect.

The governor said his decision became necessary as all efforts to make members of the institution see reasons to call off their over six month-old-strike action had failed.

62,140 Candidates To Rewrite UTME On First July

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) yesterday said that 62,140 candidates, who had issues with late registration, biometric non-verification and cancellation of results would have to rewrite the examination.

The board said the rescheduled examination would hold on 1st of July 2017 across the candidates’ centres.

JAMB Registrar Is-haq Oloyede spoke yesterday after a meeting of the board’s management with chief external examiners and other major stakeholders on the conduct of 2017 UTME, at its headquarters, Bwari, Abuja.

Oloyede said the meeting candidates approved the cancellation of the results of 1,386 candidates for examination
He added that these candidates would not be allowed to rewrite the examination.

The JAMB registrar said: “The meeting approved the cancellation of the results of 1,386 individual candidates found culpable of examination malpractice. The cancellation of results of 57,646 in centres-induced malpractice. The cancellation of the two results of the 666 candidates engaged in multiple examinations.

“The meeting also agreed on the rescheduling of examination for candidates of centres with mass malpractice, but who are deemed innocent, biometric non-verification machine related issues, late registration, four lost sessions in three centres due to malfunctioning of three servers at the centre and incomplete results.”

According to him, the meeting also approved the delisting of 48 computer based test centres from participating in JAMB examination because of various infractions.

The 62,140 cancelled results include 57,646 candidates in centres-induced malpractice, 3,811 late registration, and 683 candidates who had biometric challenges.

“The meeting approved the suspension of 24 computer based test centres for one year due to technical issues. These centres would not participate in the 2018 unified tertiary matriculation examination but they can be reconsidered for 2019 and above.

The delisting of 48 centres from participating in the board’s examination in future as a result of serious technical deficiencies, extortion, organised examination malpractices and other damaging infractions,” he added.

INEC Begins Voter Registration Nationwide

   Voter Registration across the country begins today, 27th April 2017. According to the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, "the exercise would be held throughout the 774 Local Government Areas of the country. He therefore advised Nigerians who are 18 years and above to take advantage of the opportunity and not disenfranchise themselves. He also urged registered voters who were yet to collect the Permanent Voter's Cards (PVCs) to visit the commission's office where they registered to collect them.

          INEC Secretary in Niger State, Aliyu Bungudu said that the voter registration would be conducted in public places for ease of access. He also solicited the support of politicians, traditional and religious leaders in mobilizing the populace to participate in the exercise.

          The exercise would take place on weekdays (Monday - Friday) from 9am to 3pm excluding public holidays. INEC also stated that it was a criminal offence to register more than once.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Registrar/Chief Executive Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, during the opening ceremony of a strategic planning retreat on the monitoring, supervision and evaluation of 2017 UTME stated that candidates writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) this year would spend two hours instead of three hours.

He said the reduction in exam time was in line with international best standards and practices where no candidate is kept in an examination such as UTME for more than two hours. In his words: “We are going to reduce the duration of the examination for this year’s UTME. You cannot keep children of this age for three hours. For their age, the maximum time you can keep them is two hours. So, we are considering the reduction in the time they spend because once it is more than two hours you can’t expect that they will retain their presence of mind.”

Oloyede added that out of 13 commercial banks and the Nigeria Postal Service that have signified interest in the sales of the admission forms, only nine have paid for the number of application documents they required in the first instance. NLC To Protest On Thursday 9th February Over Dire Economic Situation In Country

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, has stated that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in collaboration with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) will stage a protest over the state of things in Nigeria on Thursday January 9, 2017.

The protest which is tagged ‘National day
of action against corruption and for good
governance’ will hold simultaneously in Abuja and Lagos.

According to Wabba, Thursday would be
marked with marches and rallies. The unions will also seize the opportunity to submit a petition containing a list of demands to the government at the Presidential Villa and National Assembly.

Workers and Nigerians are expected to gather as early as 7am at the Unity
Fountain, Abuja from where the protest will head to the Federal Secretariat, the National Assembly and to the Presidency.
The NLC president,  Comrade Ayuba Wabba argued that the need for good governance in the face of recession and the negative effect of free for all multiple exchange rate regime necessitated the protest.

He also said that issues to be addressed in the protest also include an upward review of minimum wage and payment of salaries.

Non-Academic Staff Unions Of Universities Suspend Warning Strike

The Non-academic staff unions of Nigerian universities on Thursday in Abuja suspended its 5-day warning strike.

The unions are the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Non–Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the unions announced the suspension in a communiqué.

The communiqué was jointly signed by Mr Sani Suleiman, President (NAAT), Mr Solomon Alfa, Vice-President (SSANU), Mr Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary (NASU).

Others are: Dr Jamila Suara, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education and Permanent Secretary in Labour and Employment Ministry, Mr Clement Illoh.

The Deputy General Secretary of SSANU, Mr Festus Ajayi, read the communiqué to newsmen at the end of the meeting with the Federal Government.

“The meeting urged the members of JAC to suspend its ongoing warning strike.

“JAC agreed to suspend the strike with effect from Friday, Jan. 20.

“After due consideration by the leadership of JAC, they agreed to convey the outcome of the meeting to their respective congresses to suspend the strike”, he said.

The communiqué stated that on the issue of Earned Allowance that any arrangement by government in this regards should involve all workers and employees in the university system.

It also stated that on the judgement of the National Industrial Court (NIC) on staff schools in the universities, there was urgent need to put the university system on notice to avoid further termination of teachers’ appointment.

The communiqué noted that a committee will be inaugurated by next week to look into the issue of corruption in some of the universities.

Ajayi urged the Federal Government to ensure that they do not renege on the 2009 agreement as reaffirmed in the just concluded meeting.

Illoh, who represented the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, commended the unions for their understanding.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the unions had declared a five – day warning strike effective from Jan. 16.

Federal Government Begs SSANU, NASU, NAAT To Suspend Strike

FG has pleaded with the non teaching staff unions in the universities that embarked on strike yesterday to suspend their action in the interest of the nation.

The three University unions, the National
Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, Non Academic Staff Union and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU started a five-day warning strike yesterday over the inability of the Federal Government to implement the 2009 Agreements with the
unions.
The Joint Action Committee, JAC, of the unions in a statement issued in Abuja, stated that the warning strike had become necessary to make government take necessary action to fully implement the 2009 FGN/Non-Teaching Staff Unions Agreements it freely entered into with the unions.

The Federal Government through the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige in a statement appealed to the three unions to suspend their action in the interest of the nation.
Ngige said, “I wish to assure that the Federal Government is ready and willing to fully dialogue with the members of these Trade Unions, operating under the umbrella of Joint Action Committee. Government has already opened an unhindered channel of communication with all stakeholders and shall maintain this.

The Federal Government therefore, expects that the Trade Unions should suspend the strike before the re-scheduled meeting (January 18, 2017) to make way for untrammeled discussions. “It is important for Trade Unions to embrace dialogue in the pursuit and attainment of the economic and social interests of their members anchored on equity and natural justice.
“I hence thought it necessary to remind the
Trade Unions that there is nothing like a “warning strike” in our National Industrial Relations System, NIRS, a strike is a strike and is subject to all the rules governing strike in the world of work.

“Accordingly, the provisions of Section 43 of the Trade Disputes Act, CAP. T8, Laws of the
Federation of Nigeria, LFN, 2004, will apply
regarding the law of “no work no pay by workers/employees notwithstanding any other circumstances in any section of the Act.

“Once more, I wish to appeal to the trade unions to embrace dialogue as the Federal Government is fully committed to peaceful resolution of what the unions termed “Full Implementation of 2009 FGN/Non – Teaching Staff Union’s Agreement.”

(Well, I hope, the members of the System will forgive us for that. 😊)

It''s related to the hysteria raised by the authorities and the mass media around MMM. By joining forces, they''ve managed to nearly give the members of the System a heart attack and have frightened them out of their wits. Poor souls don''t know what to expect. Will we open again or not? 😊)

This is why we''ve decided, considering the situation, to reach out to the members, reassure and cheer them up by opening a little earlier. After all, Together We Can Change The World! 😊)

Here we go.

1. As of this notice, MMM resumes its usual operation. You can now create your GH-requests.

2. However, it''s obvious that panic will reign in the first few days after the re-opening of the System. We’re likely to be deluged by GH-requests. Therefore, we''re going to make gradual paybacks by setting internal output limits. In other words, we will only pay a certain amount per day. Please, be prepared to wait for a couple of days. We are certain things will then calm down, and the System operation will return to normal.

We''re the ones setting the limits, so it''s completely under our control, and we are not expecting any emergencies in principle. Have no fear and go on about your business as usual. 😊)

As the System is socially oriented, we will make paybacks to the poor and the economically disadvantaged in the first place: it means to the members with small PH amounts. The richer can wait. Moreover, we''ve warned you repeatedly to only provide help with amounts that are not critical for you. Therefore, if these large amounts are not critical for them (the richer), they can wait a few days. No need to be tragic about it. 😊)

This is the way it''s going to be.
