Parliamentarians Boycott Lectures Over Power Blackout

The Parliamentarians of the Obafemi Awolowo University Students’ Union comprising of the Legislative and Executive arms of the Union today embarked on Lecture Boycott in order to show the students' displeasure over the Power Blackout on the University campus.

In response to about four days of total power blackout in the university community, an emergency meeting of the Parliamentarians was conveyed at the level of the Students' Union Building where the honourable Student Representative Council agreed unanimously with the Executives of the Union to commence an immediate lecture boycott today. The decision was not dragged at all as the Honourables believed the students have endured the hardship enough and it is no longer tolerable.

Just immediately after the meeting at about 10:00am, the Union leaders including the Speaker of the Parliament, the other members of the House Leadership and some honourables, the President of the Students' Union, the Vice President and other members of the Central Executive Council moved the aluta train to lecture theatres where lectures were taking place.

The first point of call was the ASUU Secretariat where the Union officers notified the lecturer body of the intended lecture boycott. The brief meeting ended as the Speaker came out to address the students informing them of the support of the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU). The train never left AUD 2 without recording its first class casualty as a class been handled by Dr Faleye of Department of English Language was boycotted. The Commercial Law(BUL301) class of the students of the Faculty of Law that was supposed to hold at AUD 1 could not hold due to the boycott too.

The Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library was also hit by the boycott as a meeting between the Union officers and the University Librarian ensured the Library was closed down. Faculty of Sciences too had its own share as lectures that were ongoing at Yellow House were disrupted. A Practical Class that was initially scheduled for 2pm at the Department of Botany could not also hold as a result of the Lecture Boycott.

Synagogue Building Collapse Was Controlled Demolition – Emmanuel TV

The Synagogue Church Of All Nation says the collapsed building in the church premises was a controlled demolition, demanding for an investigation into the matter.

A spokesman for a media outfit of the church, Emmanuel Television, Mr Ken Emeakayi, said footages from the CCTV in the church premises showed that a strange aircraft hovered over the building four times before it collapsed.

He told Channels Television on Monday that the aircraft might have been there to detonate explosive devices that may have been planted in the building prior to the collapse.

“We are investigating the incident for the world to know what actually happened. When you look at the clip you will see that it was not just the aircraft hovering. At the point of the incident, there was explosion.

“It is possible they were either dropped or planted and the aircraft will have to come and detonate it.

“The persons in the building said that the noise they heard suggested that it was an explosion.
“Those involved in the act may not have been aware of the security cameras.

“With modern technologies explosive devices could be detonated without a loud noise.

“There were about four explosives that were detonated in the building from the much the CCTv could capture and because we know that there would be fragments from the explosive, we are calling for an investigation,” he said.

The Emmanuel Tv spokesman said that the presiding priest, Prophet TB Joshua, could have been the target, explaining that the incident occurred after the same strange aircraft had hovered around a prayer ground where the pastor usually holds prayer sessions in the morning.

“A strange helicopter was hovering around the prayer mountain when the man of God was there. It was the time he was supposed to be at the mountain but he had left. They thought he was still there but he has gone back to the church.Collapsed Synagogue guest house Building.

“After the man of God left the prayer mountain, this same aircraft came to the church premises. The first time it was sighted was at 11:30am local time at a very low altitude hovering over this story building and we have clips.

“It was about 40 feet from the building. The same aircraft hovered about four times. At an interval of nine minutes, five minutes,” he said.

Mr Emeakayi said that the church had submitted the video clips to security agencies for investigation but that they had not received any news about how far the investigation had gone.

He dismissed allegations that the construction of the building did not follow standard rules, stressing that the church had followed every requirement.

There have been rumours that the approval for the building was for a fewer number of floors, but Mr Emeakayi said that the church had approval to erect a 12-story building in the place but had only stopped at six floors.

Contrary to the claims of the spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency south-west region, Ibrahim Farinloye, that members of the church prevented the agency from gaining access into were the building was, Mr Emeakayi said that the persons referred to as members of the church must be sympathisers.

He further asked the agencies investigating the incident to focus on the whole issue and not on an isolated case of building structure standard, insisting that their story about the strange aircraft and the controlled demolition should equally be investigated.

President Goodluck Jonathan had visited the site of collapsed building, promising to ensure that the cause of the collapse was investigated.

Take Online Courses From World's Best Universities For Free

Hello peeps. It would be bad of me to keep this in and not share it, i came across the great website through a colleague, he adviced me to check out the site instead of browsing the internet, chatting, facebooking and practically doing nothing meaningful.

What is edX?

EdX is a massive open online course (MOOC) provider and online learning platform. It hosts online university-level courses in a wide range of disciplines to a worldwide audience at no charge. It also conducts research into learning based on how people use its platform. EdX differs from other MOOC platforms, such Coursera and Udacity, in that it is nonprofit and runs on an open-source software platform.

EdX was founded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University in May 2012. There are currently 56 schools, nonprofits, corporations, and international organizations that offer or plan to offer courses on the edX website. As of 22 July 2014, edX has more than 2.5 million users taking over 240 courses online.

EdX courses consist of weekly learning sequences. Each learning sequence is composed of short (an average of 10 minutes each) videos interspersed with interactive learning exercises where students can immediately practice the concepts from the videos. The courses often include tutorial videos that are similar to small on-campus discussion groups, an online textbook, and an online discussion forum where students can post and review questions and comments to each other and teaching assistants. Where applicable, online laboratories are incorporated into the course. For example, in edX's first MOOC—a circuits and electronics course—students built virtual circuits in an online lab.

EdX offers certificates of successful completion, but does not offer course credit. Whether or not a college or university offers credit for an online course is within the sole discretion of the school. EdX offers a variety of ways to take courses, including verified courses where students have the option to audit the course (no cost) or to work toward an edX verified certificate (fees vary by course), honor code courses where students can either audit (no cost) or work toward an honor code certificate (no cost). In addition, in the fall of 2013, edX launched a pilot project to offer a special certificate in a subject area (called "XSeries Certificate") after completing a bundled set of 3-4 verified courses in that subject (cost varies depending on the courses).

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Go Through Drop Test (Video)

Apart from great technical specifications, one of the things most people consider when buying a smartphone is durability– ability to withstand accidental physical abuses. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus went on sale officially today in some parts of the world and surprisingly, we’re seeing drop tests already. A Youtube user named PhoneBuff uploaded a video showing how strong the phones are.

As predicted by a number of people, the iPhone 6 appears to be able to withstand the stress better than iPhone 6 Plus although both phones ended up with damaged screen.

iPhone 6 survived the back drop. Also when dropped on it’s side, it survived with a few scratches, however, the screen got damaged when dropped face down. That’s to be expected though.

iPhone 6 Plus on the other hand ended with with just a scratch when dropped on it’s back but the screen shattered during the side drop.

Below is the video:

If you know you’ve got ‘slippery fingers’ , drop things all the time and you’re planning to buying iPhone 6 Plus, perhaps going for iPhone 6 is a better idea judging by the video.

Nigerian Army Confirms Boko Haram Leader Shekau's Death (Photos)

The Defence Headquarters has released a statement claiming to have killed a man posing as the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau (or his impersonator) in an attack (both land and air) in Konduga Borno state between 12nd to 17th September. Find the statement after the cut...

Nigerian troops have been conducting coordinated air and land operations in furtherance of efforts at containing the terrorists in the North East part of the country. Somehow, it became apparent that the terrorists in continuation of their campaign of terror were determined to take over communities around Maiduguri which is their prime target.

There was therefore the need to ensure that communities such as Konduga were protected. It is noteworthy that the terrorists made not less than four attempts between 12 and 17 September 2014 to violate the security and enter Konduga to perpetrate their atrocities. Air and land forces were subsequently deployed to handle the situation.

The convoy of combat vehicles typical of terrorists’ mission that involves their top commanders, were fiercely engaged by the land and air forces. Several of the terrorists including some of their commanders lost their lives in the encounters which lasted an average of about 5 hours each.

The troops captured some of the terrorists and their equipment. In the course of those encounters, one Mohammed Bashir who has been acting or posing on videos as the deceased Abubakar Shekau, the eccentric character known as leader of the group died. Since the name Shekau has become a brand name for the terrorists’ leader, the Nigerian military remains resolute to serve justice to anyone who assumes that designation or title as well as all terrorists that seek to violate the freedom and territory of Nigeria.

On restoring normalcy after the encounter, inhabitants of the community who were victims of terrorists activities corroborated information on the identity of Bashir Mohammed alias Abubakar Shekau, alias Abacha Abdullahi Geidam alias Damasack etc. Indeed, the recent devastation on the leadership of the insurgents is attributable to the renewed commitment to the mission of eradicating terrorism in our country.

Meanwhile, a total of 135 terrorists have yesterday evening surrendered along with equipment to troops around Biu Local Government Area. A group of 88 submitted themselves at Mairiga/Bun – Yadi while another group of 45 terrorists were taken in around Mubi – Michika. They are all being interrogated and processed in conformity with the dictates of standard best practices.

The Defence Headquarters applauds the gallantry of the Nigerian troops who have remained undaunted and professional in prosecuting this campaign against terror. The keen interest exhibited by our neighbours and allies is commendable and we appreciate them. All allies in the war against terrorism are hereby assured of the Nigerian military’s resolve to maintain momentum in the efforts to decimate and defeat terrorists. The invaluable efforts toward achieving sustainable peace and victory against the terrorists are highly appreciated.

Statement signed by Defence spokesperson, Maj. Gen Chris Olukayode

Election Petition Tribunal Reports Divide NAOSS Congress

The Congress of National Association of Ondo State Students(NAOSS) ended in an unusual manner today as Congressmen failed to make resolutions on pending issues. A Congress that was called by the President of the Association was meant to hear the report of the Election Petition Tribunal earlier constituted to look into the alleged forgery perpetrated by the new President among other things.

Akeremale Oluseun a.k.a Oluomo, the NAOSS President was already presiding over the Congress until the Chairman of the Election Petition Tribunal, Hon. Banji raised an observation that the President is under investigation and so, he does not have the right justification to preside over the Congress. The Congress was quick to adopt the observation and the President had to step down for the Vice President to preside over the Congress. This decision did not go well with some Congressmen as they believe the President could only be disallowed in such manner only if he had been impeached.

With continued unrest amidst Congressmen in what looks like divided line of interests among them over the matter of the rumoured impeachment of the President, the congress atmosphere was electrified as they started to exchange words.

Intensed arguement started when Honourable Akin, the Fajuyi Hall Chairman and a NAOSSite raised the issue of constitutional adherence to the membership of the Election Petition Tribunal that was set up in an observation turned motion. Eminent, a 2014 presidential aspirant of the OAU Students' Union in his response insisted that there was an agendum yet unattended to which was the motion for the adoption of the last minute and request for counter motion and as such, no motion should be treated.

The General Secretary who was eventually delegated by the Vice President to preside over the Congress lost control of it as arguements got heated up and some Congress men including the Election Petition Tribunal chairman insisted that the Congress be adjourned based on what he perceived as a Congress without agenda.

A credible source privy to our correspondent explained the underlying reason for the commotion and attributed it to the decisions that the Election Petition Tribunal took. It said the Election Petition Tribunal had earlier resolved to impeach the President and at thesame time swear-in a new president without the knowledge of the remaining Executive Members and also the Congress that constituted it. According to our source, the Tribunal had gone ahead to swear-in the runner-up of the presidential election of the Association that brought Oluomo in as the President.

Despite pleas from popular student leaders, AY Toes and Hon. Phenomenon who were congressmen for amicable resolution of the pending matters irrespective of any self interest, the Congress failed to reach a decision on the matter as the General Secretary had to adjourn the Congress till Thursday, 27th September, 2014 on the basis he described as popular demand.

It will be recalled that Akeremale Oluseun a.k.a Oluomo in the last Congress was accused of forging the signature of Mr Iwakun Niyi, the President of his Local Government Association on the Reference letter he tendered to contest in the election that brought him in as the president. Akeremale Oluseun a.k.a Oluomo has since then debunked the allegation and described it as a false and a criminal accusation against him which amounts to slander and defamation of his character.

'Ibikunle Plans 'Maradonic' Congress' -Student

By Emeka Chukwudi

Mr Ibikunle Isaac ‘Maradona’ is up to it again. Information from reliable sources reveals that the President is secretly planning to call an unpopular Congress of students, today, Monday 22nd September, 2014. The essence of this unannounced, unpopular Congress plans is to ensure that mass of students are not informed regarding the Congress, while Ibikunle secretly mobilizes his cult-friends to beat up students who dare speak against his impunity and ineptitude. My source informed me that Ibikunle and RBT had held a secret meeting at Asherifa with some known cultists, who are notorious for terrorizing the area. The meeting had resolved that Ibikunle’s men should deal with anyone who raises question on Ibikunle’s at the Congress.

It should be noted that Awoites accosted Ibikunle last Sunday, and demanded that he calls a Congress meeting of students on several issues ranging from suspension, review of the fee-hike struggle, welfare conditions and clarifications on the activities of some officers of the students’ union. Clearly there is clear indication that the recent actions of Ibikunle have earned him an obvious vote of no confidence among the majority of students. Hence, the possibility of impeaching him at any Congress meeting is very high. In a recent event, Ibikunle had ordered that Braggar, another cultist loyal to Ibikunle, should beat up a fresh student at his residence in Awo block 8, claiming that the student intruded his restricted residential area. Of course Ibikunle was nearly beaten in Awo hall, when the rumour was confirmed by Awoites themselves – Ibikunle had to flee Awo alongside his dangerous-looking bandits called security.

With all this, Ibikunle cannot resist calling a Congress of students because he cannot live peacefully with Awoites, who are politically vigilant and greatly detest his recent atrocities. But instead of making the Congress popular so that he can clear the air on several issues indicting him, and to fashion way forward on several issues bedeviling the union too, especially the issues of welfare and suspension of eight students’ activists, Ibikunle has only decided to maneuver attendance so that such meeting would not be effective. This is one of the maradonic and ‘hide and seek’ games which Ibikunle has been playing with Great Ife students since the beginning of his administration.

Students should recall that when school was opened recently after the forceful closure, Ibikunle told students that he would conduct referendum instead of calling a Congress of students. He argued pathetically that Congresses are not well populated. Of course this is a lie. The low attendance that has been recorded in Congresses so far is as a result of the inefficiency of the Ibikunle’s administration and the dearth of publicity, given the ineptitude of Bamidele. Now, the individuals who so much ‘want’ well-populated Congress meeting do not want to mobilize for it.

Wayforward: Students should taunt the permutation and the maradonic play of this treacherous union leadership by going en masse to the Congress venue. Great Ife students must insist that Ibikunle be moderated openly for his connection in the Awo beating. He should give a full report of the state of the union and the increment struggle, especially the issues exposed by the Vice President of the Union. Students must be vigilant of the Cultists, who Ibikunle has mobilized to disrupt the Congress meeting. Any suspicious person should be questioned.

Africa Development Bank Young Professionals Program

African Development Bank – In September 1964, a group of Africans met in Khartoum, Sudan, to ratify the multinational agreement to set up the African Development Bank. They were representing the continent’s newly formed twenty-five governments. They had the same mission and bore the same hope. Their hope was to see the new institution contribute to the continent’s development and unity.

By this act, Africa was taking its destiny into its own hands in the early 1960s. From the very early stages, and often with reference to major market networks of pre-colonial Africa, its leaders had designed the institution so that it would be one hundred percent African. Africa wanted to be in charge of its own destiny and wanted to be distant from the ideological and linguistic divides of the time. Thus, the African Development Bank (AfDB) was created.

Nigerian Professional Football League Week 27 Round Up

Three of the premier league teams whipped their opponents silly in Match Day 27 which produced 27 goals in matches decided on Sunday where the home teams enjoyed 100 percent wins

ENUGU RANGERS 1-0 WARRI WOLVES

The Flying Antelopes celebrated their second consecutive with another narrow win over the Seasiders at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Sunday evening with Christian Obiozor scoring the only goal of the tie in the 20th minute from the spot. It was his second goal in the last two games - the match winner against Dolphins at the same stadium during the mid week.

The triumph took Rangers’ points haul to 37 from 27 games and they have left the relegation zone to a much safer haven on the log while Wolves are still on 40. The Coal City side would wish to extend their winning streak in Umuahia where they are travelling to for the mid week match while Warri Wolves will seek redemption at home to Dolphins.

SUNSHINE STARS 3-1 ABIA WARRIORS

The Akure Gunners returned to winning ways again after their close loss to Warri Wolves last Wednesday with a comfortable 3-1 home win over Abia Warriors. Goals from Dele Olorundare, Tunde Adeniji and Musa Newman in the fourth, 32nd and 68th minutes sent Sunshine to 40 points from 27 games. Abia Warriors however got a consolation goal through their highest scorer, Peter Onyekachi who benefitted from a slopping defence to nod his side only goal in the 81st minute. Both clubs have 40 points from 27 points but the Akure sides are lower by virtue of inferior goals difference to the Umuahia team.

Sunshine will have a mountain to climb when they visit FC Taraba in Jalingo while Abia Warriors will want to return to winning ways at home to Enugu Rangers on Wednesday.

GIWA FC 2-0 FC TARABA

Two goals from the penalty spot converted by the Jos Elephant’s leading scorer, Ibrahim Shuaibu handed Giwa FC all points at the expense of the Jalingo Boys in Jos’ Rwang Pam Stadium on Sunday.

FC Taraba came all out to put behind them their unimpressive results since the Week 22 tie that they defeated Kaduna United, they have played five games thereafter without a win. They are owed four months’ salary among other bonuses. The loss has plunged them into the relegation zone. They must dust themselves up on Wednesday if they want to get their first win in six games against Sunshine Stars in Jalingo while Giwa FC will also hope for the best when they visit Uyo as guests of Akwa United.

Giwa have 41 points to stay in the top five from 27 matches while FC Taraba’s loss has taken them into the bottom four with 33 points from 27 matches.

KANO PILLARS 1-0 AKWA UNITED

The Sai Masu Gida notched up another crucial home win to keep alive their hope of winning the league for a third consecutive season. They pinned stubborn Promise Keepers by a lone goal at the Kano Pillars Stadium on Sunday evening.

Pillars maintained their three points’ cushion at the top with 47 points from 27 matches and are unbeaten in the last three games both home and away. Akwa United’s 39 points from 27 matches is only good enough for the mid table placement. Pillars will go in search of more away points against wounded Bayelsa United in Benin City while Akwa United are at home to Giwa FC.

ENYIMBA FC 4-0 BAYELSA UNITED

The People’s Elephant put up one of their best performances of the season to defeat hapless Bayelsa United 4-0 at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba on Sunday.

The Aba Millionaires’ players didn’t click into the game early but when they eventually gathered their thoughts they became unstoppable with their fans urging them up at the stands.

Enyimba started the avalanche of goals in the 44th minute through Amanfor Chimezie whose shot was adjudged to have gone in before desperate Restoration Boys’ defender cleared to safety. The goal angered Bayelsa United’s players and they refused to continue play for some time. The time wasted by the visitors over their protest of the Enyimba’s opening would later haunt them because the home team increased the lead during the first half stoppage time. The referee added seven minutes.

Further goals by Anaezemba Nzube and Emeka Nwana in the 55th and 90th minutes were the icing on the cake for Enyimba. The Aba giants are still third with 43 points from 27 games after the top two: Kano Pilars and Nasarawa United bagged maximum points in their own home games. Enyimba visit very unfriendly environment at katsina Ala against Lobi Stars while Bayelsa United will be doing themselves and their current conquerors a lot of good if they are able to pin Kano Pillars in Benin.

NEMBE CITY 2-1 LOBI STARS

The Yenagoa side scooped another important win at their adoptive home in Omoku when they beat Lobi Stars 2-1 at the Krisdera Hotel Stadium on Sunday.

Lobi’s Farouk Umar’s goal almost on the dot of the halftime was a merely consolation as the Makurdi side failed to recoup the lost points at home to El Kanemi Warriors. Nembe have 27 points from 27 games to prod the league table while Lobi are still on 38 points from as many matches. Nembe will come to Owerri as guests of Heartland while Lobi will welcome Enyimba to Katsina Ala on Wednesday.

EL KANEMI WARRIORS 2-1 HEARTLAND FC

It was the first of the double header played on Sunday in Kano with the Sai Masu Gida’s tie with Akwa United the second. The Borno Army were able to hold on to beat the Naze Millionaires. They were able to curtail the spirited effort of Heartland till the final blast of the referee’s whistle.

El Kanemi are presently on 39 points from 27 matches. They have been able to overcome their slow start to the season and the point earned away to Lobi-the second in two seasons has helped to take the Maiduguri to the mid table. Heartland will aim for maximum points at home to Nembe City where they will hope to improve on their 37 points from 27 games. El Kanemi will travel to Ibadan as guests of wounded Crown FC.

KADUNA UNITED 5-0 CROWN FC

The Crocodile Boys thumped their direct relegation zone opponents 5-0 at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Zaria on Sunday to move them a bit clear of relegation zone. Siman Yusuf’s hat trick aided the club’s biggest win of the season after the Ajilete Boys were totally outclassed by Garuba Lawal inspired Kaduna United.

They have 33 points from 27 matches and they are out of the bottom four for the first time in recent times. Crown’s problem got deepened by the emphatic loss as they still second from bottom with 30 points from as many games. Crown must not only beat El Kanemi Warriors but also must win well to equalize their scandalous away loss to Kaduna United. Kaduna United will pay Sharks a visit in Port Harcourt. Both games come up on Wednesday.

NASARAWA UNITED 2-0 SHARKS FC

The Solid Miners huffed and puffed but they still got the job done at the Lafia Township Stadium on Sunday with a 2-0 home win over the Blue Angels. The Port Harcourt team sized up their hosts but it couldn’t prevent them from going down 0-1 at halftime before Tony Edjomariegwe netted the insurance goal to hand maximum points to Nasarawa United and also kept the side’s second spot on the log with 44 points.

It was another disappointing outing for Sharks who fast fading after a promising season under Gbenga Ogunbote. Sharks have 38 points from 27 games and they will be at home to Kaduna United on Wednesday. Nasarawa United have a date with Gombe United who are condemned to win at home if they do not want to continue to flirt with relegation zone.

DOLPHINS 2-0 GOMBE UNITED

The Port Harcourt Dwellers had the penalty of Chizoba Ahamefula and the individual brilliance of Emem Eduok to thank for their maximum points victory over the Desert Scorpions. Gombe United matched them toe for toe till the final 20 minutes when they were reduced to 10 men after Austin Ekpoma was showna red card for dissent. Not long after the home team got a penalty which was converted by Ahamefula before the goal of Eduok sealed maximum points.

Gombe United are back in the relegation zone yet again after their back to back losses and they must beat visiting Nasarawa United on Wednesday to start their operation stay in the elite division campaign. They have 32 points from 27 matches while Dolphins are fourth with 42 points from 27 games. Dolphins will tackle Warri Wolves on Wednesday in one of the star matches of the mid week games.

Rumour Of Shekau’s Death Spreads

In a related development, rumour of the death of the sect’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, and some of his commanders in the battle with troops in Konduga was spreading across Borno State, as of the time of filing this report.

Shekau’s reported death is contained in the account of some of the survivours of an attack of the sect on Mainok on Friday, as they said they were afraid of returning to the town “because we are told the insurgents are mad as a result of the killing of their leader, Abubakar Shekau, in Konduga.”

Reports reaching Sunday Tribune in Maiduguri, the state capital, indicated that over 300 people were killed when the insurgents attacked Mainok market on that Friday in what was believed to be a retaliation of the leader’s death as villagers were in the peak of trading on the market day.

A local, Modu Jakana, who narrowly escaped that attack, told Sunday Tribune that the insurgents came in from all angles, “shooting the people as if they were exchanging fire with the military. We don’t know how we escaped, but we were so lucky. They were so determined to kill everybody. I saw so many corpses while we were running for dear lives. At the main road, vehicles that were on top speed also killed so many people as there was confusion everywhere.

“This morning, some of our people told us that over 300 people, including some of the insurgents, were killed because we learnt that the military came and engaged them in a fierce fight.

Students' Union Leaders Speak On Outage of Power And Water Supply

FROM THE LEADERSHIP OF THE UNION

REPORT ON THE RECENT OUTAGE OF POWER AND SUPPLY OF WATER EXPERIENCED IN THE UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY

With due civility and veneration, I salute the courage, the doggedness, especially the perseverance and maturity Great Ife students displayed throughout the period in which the university community was devoid of supply of power and water supply became a race up and down the hills. Following actions and reactions that trailed the period, it is considered exigent that a detailed report be given for the sake of proper information.

The ugly situation the university community found itself since Tuesday, 16th of September, 2014, was as a result of a national grid fault at Oshogbo distribution plant. The fault led to outage of power at Oshogbo, Ife, Ilesha and Ondo which definitely did not exclude OAU campus. As at Tuesday, the welfare officer of the Union, Ojogbon, inquired from various concerned offices on campus to know the cause of the outage and the above reason was given. He, with immediate effect issued a release, informing students of the cause of the development as it is expected of an accountable.

The Union on Wednesday, took to further actions in search of the root of the matter and further went on to demand alternative means of power supply from the university management. The university has three generating sets which are not working. The union demanded their immediate resuscitation as students cannot continue in that condition. The hiked fees were said to be to cushion running cost of the university and as such, emergency situations like this should have been prepared for. The Union readily ensured that supply of water was on going using alternative power generating set to pump water and use of water tankers to supply water by putting necessary pressure on the Water section of the university’s department of works. Having reached this point, the P.R.O, Bamidele, therefore, went on to update students in their halls of residence about the state of the matter. The management on Wednesday promised that alternative means of supply of power will be sought.

The unbearable persistence of the situation till Thursday, spurred the union to move on to OAU maintenance department PHCN distribution centre at Ajebandele and the distribution plant at Oshogbo to get a clear view of the situation. It remains part of the guiding principle of the current union leadership to ensure that all truth and falsity are established on all matters before actions are taken. In due course of these moves, it was discovered that engineers have been recruited to trace all the distribution lines throughout the span of the plant’s coverage area. The Oshogbo plant General Manager informed the union leaders that as soon as the whole matter is resolved, light will be restored. He gave assurances of Thursday evening. The union leaders also went to the sites where the tracing was being done. On return to Ife, the management called the union leaders to a meeting where the DVC Academics, Prof. Ayobami Salami on behalf of the Vice Chancellor and the Management expressed regrets about the disheartening situation and promised to provide any form of alternative as soon as possible ranging from fuelling of hostel generators and rotational running of faculty generators to ensure constant provision means of charging phones and reading at the academics area. The union at the meeting however, rejected this arrangement insisting that the university generating sets be repaired regardless of the financial implication of the repair.

The meeting with the University management did not fail to address issues of students who were suspended due to issues of bedspace racketeering especially those that were only suspected to wish to do so. The Union appealed that the University should restore their studentship. Likewise students who have problems with gmail verification and registration but they paid during normal registration also had their matter tendered before the meeting. The Union demanded that the offices of the DVC Academics, DSA, Directorate of Academic affairs and the Computer Centre swing into action on this as quickly as possible as the Union cannot afford the intended exploitation as the affected students are being asked to pay late registration fee.

Light was restored Thursday evening consequent upon the pressure the union mounted on all concerned quarters. OAU having been given priority, the supplied power reached all hostels and academics area but a fault somewhere on the University campus led to the tripping-off of hostel light at about two instances. The Union joined the electrical workers in the midnight in tracing the fault. The union leadership on Friday morning further pressurized the workers at the maintenance department so as to speed up correction of faults. The supply of power had to be ceased from both academics and hostel areas in order to speedily correct all faults being a product of the union’s pressure. Light was restored in the evening on Friday but some halls were still affected and as such the union did not rest until the faults were totally corrected and normalcy was restored everywhere in the University community.

The constitution of Nigeria provides that the welfare and security of the people shall be the priority of every government. As such, the union will always put at it fore the welfare and security of all its members at all times. We tender sincere appreciation to all Great Ife students for bearing with us through this period of hardship.

Amandla Awetu… Nothing shall discourage us

Bamidele Oludare J. Ibikunle Isaac M.

Obafemi Awolowo University 2015/2016 Admission Thread

Hi great minds! I am sure some students' hope is not yet gone but so many aspirants' hope may have been dashed in a way since all the cut-off marks for 2014/2015 admissions are out. We are still expecting the lists though but it better we start planning for 2015/2016 UTME and processes in order to ease things.

The issue of right subject combination for UTME registration will be our top concern for now because we could see many got that wrong this year and it might cause some their choice course. So share this posts with friends on Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp and other social media to get more oeople in. Goodluck friends as we discuss.

Ibikunle, Bamidele Accused Of Beating Up A Fresher

Thursday evening at Awolowo Hall in Oba Awon University could be described as one of the most action packed night in this semester as Bamidele was on the verge of been paraded and served ‘maximum shishi’ by Awoite for allegedly slapping a student.

It all started Thursday evening when Ibikunle and some other members of the CEC, SU came to Awolowo Hall as usual to make announcement. Awo boys in what looks like accumulated frustration and anger over the 5 days power blackout and epileptic water supply refused to listen to the Union president and boo him as he continually tried to speak. No sooner, many Awo boys who were upstairs before came down and got into hot arguement with Ibikunle and other Union leaders. Suddenly, there was an uproar and clamour from one end of the clustered students that Bamidele, the SU PRO slapped someone. Immediately, many Awoites who were already angry started to shout and intensely call for Bamidele trial at the level of Awolowo Cafe for allegedly slapping someone.

The surprise was never revealed until when Bamidele was eventually dragged to Awo Cafe after so much repelling forces allied to the Union officer that was against the clamoured trial. The call was made that the slapped person should come up and explain what actually transpired and led to him been slapped. Surprisingly, the person who was slapped could not be found. Did Bamidele then slap a ghost? Or Is the person slapped afraid to come out? That is a yet to be answered question.

At this point, my mind was already creating a scenario of a similar situation in a law court. Since Bamidele’s alleged victim could not come up, Bamidele is definitely free from any punishment and could no longer be held culpable for any offense with no genuine evidence which was the slapped person in that case. The Students’ Union PRO was eventually freed after some students mounted the podium to testify that Bamidele did not slap anyone.

Remember, the issue of the Blackout and epileptic water supply brought this brouhaha in place. As if the Season 1 was not enough, about 10 minutes later when the Union officers had all left, a young man was up narrating his ugly ordeal in the hands of the Central Executive Council members a day ago. He accused Ibikunle, Bamidele, Comrade Oye and two others for gang-beating him up as he mistakenly find his way to the officers’ block of residence. In the words of this young man who identified himself as a fresh student of Microbiology, he said he mistakingly got to the floor where Ibikunle and co stay in his search for a facebook friend called Stanley. According to him, all his efforts at convincing Ibikunle and co proved abortive as they seized his phone and landed him heavy beating.

He was about explaining how he was been taken to the Toilet probably to be locked up when Awoites started shouting SUB! They resolved to go and storm the Students’ Union Building to demand for explanation from the accused Union leaders. On getting to SUB, Ibikunle and other Union leaders were not there. The aggrieved students then decided to lock up the SUB and chanted that they no longer need a Union since it was already been made a government which was not supposed to be. Our efforts to reach Ibikunle himself in other to confirm these allegations proved abortive as he was not picking up his calls.

In similar vein, the total blackout on campus extends to 6 days today as the Power was flashed for some minutes in some Halls of Residence while others remain in darkness.

Microsoft Student Essay Contest: Cyberspace 2025

Microsoft Student Essay Contest: Cyberspace 2025
Cybersecurity is a policy priority for many governments, yet there is limited understanding of how policy choices made today will impact a country’s cyberspace tomorrow. The growth in cyberspace predicted in the next decade is driven and shaped by a number of external factors, many of which can be amplified or influenced by public policy choices. Societal responses to immigration challenges, educational and workforce needs, trade liberalization, as well as international cooperation to resolve cyberconflict will shape the future of cyberspace across both developed and emerging economies. Successful policies must balance enabling innovation and advancing cybersecurity.
Microsoft seeks original research on the future of cyberspace and its associated cybersecurity policy challenges from university students at any stage in their educational development. What will be the main cybersecurity issues at stake, and what decisions can policymakers make today to ensure a robust cybersecurity landscape in the future?

Microsoft Student Essay Contest: Cyberspace 2015

Topic

Specifically, research should address one or more of the following questions.
  • What will be the priority cybersecurity issues in 2025, and why?
  • Who are the priority stakeholders in securing cyberspace (for example, industry, governments, NGOs, and so on)? What new entrants may there be? How will their roles evolve leading up to 2025?
  • What should be the primary objectives of these stakeholders? Where there are conflicting objectives, such as national versus international policies, how should they be reconciled?
  • What are the priority actions that should be taken by stakeholders to improve cybersecurity by the year 2025?
  • What impacts will ensuring or failing to ensure cybersecurity have on societies and economies in the year 2025?

FROM THE LEADERSHIP OF THE UNION.

THROUGH THE OFFICE OF THE WELFARE OFFICER.

As at 3,50pm of Tuesday 16th of Sept., 2014.

On the current power outage and shortage of water supply in OAU.

Let me first of all commend Great Ife Students for their patience ever since this development.
Since midnight today, we have been experiencing power outage on this campus which led to shortage of water supply as claimed by 'head of Dam'.

The leadership of the union, through the president and the welfare officer, made due consultation to the power and water units of university. We later gathered that the power outage originated from Osogbo main distributing unit and work is on to ensure that this abnormal situation is corrected as soon as possible and its possibility, as Claimed by Head of Electricity, will be today, tuesday 16th.

On the issue of shortage of water supply
The Head of Dam promised supply of water by means of alternative power supply pending the restoration of power from main source.

As we patiently await the supply of power soonest, remain great.

'Jonathan Will Not Interfere With The Current Investigation Against Ali Modu Sheriff'

We have noted with surprise, the unnecessary hue and cry raised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other bigoted critics of the Jonathan Administration over the claim that the President is “hobnobbing” with the former governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff who was recently accused by the Australian, Stephen Davis of being one of the chief sponsors of the terrorist group, Boko Haram.

The totally erroneous basis for that charge was the spurious claim that Senator Sheriff accompanied President Jonathan on his recent trip to Ndjamena as a member of his entourage.

Although Senator Sheriff himself has already given the lie to that claim through his Media Adviser, the Presidency wishes to affirm, for the purpose of emphasis, that the former Borno State governor was not on President Jonathan’s delegation to Chad.

In keeping with President Jonathan’s commitment to transparency and openness in the conduct of government business, names of the key members of his delegation were announced a day before his trip to Ndjamena.

They included the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd.), the Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed and the Director-General of National Space Research and Development Agency, Prof. Seidu Mohammed.

As can be easily verified from the complete list of members of the Presidential entourage to Chad which was also circulated on Sunday and never changed, Senator Sheriff’s name was not on it. The only other persons on the list were the President’s aides, security personnel and journalists.

The APC and others who rushed to condemn President Jonathan for a non-existent indiscretion would have found, if they took the least trouble to double-check, that there was absolutely no factual basis for their accusation.

Those who associate with Senator Sheriff know that he has longstanding interests in Chad and often spends a lot of his time there. He happened to be in Ndjamena at the time of President Jonathan’s visit and joined other Nigerian residents of the Chadian capital in coming to the airport to welcome their President.

That was the full extent of his participation in the visit and it was also at Ndjamena Airport that the pictures which formed the basis of the bogus allegation of President Jonathan hobnobbing with an “accused sponsor of terrorism” were taken.

The former Governor’s presence in Chad was certainly not at President Jonathan’s instance and he did not participate in any of the President’s discussions with President Idriss Deby or his other engagements in Ndjamena.

President Jonathan is fully aware of the allegation made against Senator Sheriff by Stephen Davis. That allegation is already being investigated by the security agencies who will make their findings known to the public in due course.

The President assures all Nigerians that he has not willfully taken any action that could prejudice the outcome of that ongoing inquiry.

He seizes this opportunity to reassure the nation once again of his total commitment to doing all within his powers to bring all identified and verified sponsors of terrorism to justice, and ending the menace of violent extremism in the country.
