NANCE: Campus Editors Hold Summit In Grand Style

The National Association of Nigerian Campus Editors held her annual campus editors summit between 26th and 28th of April, 2018 at Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa.

The summit had in attendance delegates from different Nigerian institution.

The Editor In Chief of bloomgist.com, Mike Ikenwa took the participants a three-day workshop which involved cooperative discussions and opportunities to share perspective on issues related to journalism.

Also, Sodiq Oyeleke, a reporter with Punch Newspaper taught the participants on the core elements journalism and ways of avoiding being victimised by the university authorities which has become so rampant in Nigerian institution.

Mojeed Alabi of New Telegraph Newspaper, however challenged the students Journalists to do beyond reporting but rather focus on developmental stories that will expose the ills and odds of the society for a positive change. Mr. Alabi enjoined the students to network and renew their confidence in the cause of carry out their duties.

The Managing Editor of The Nation Newspaper, Lekan Otunfodunrin who gave out books written by him to campus editors advised that the students must begin to make use of the new media because the world is fast transforming.

Mr. Wale Abideen, the President of Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists however, spoke on the need to use investigative journalism to make impact in the society. "Journalism is opening that thing, someone else do not want open. If it is good, why didn't the fellow want it open", he argued.

The NUJ Vice Chairman of Osun Council, Kehinde Ayantunji concluded the summit by giving in-depth analysis on using campus journalism to link the town and gown in addressing developmental challenges.

Speaking after the summit, a participant, Toyosi Opeoluwa was quoted saying: "I wish we had more time to talk and learn from these great teachers. Thank you to NANCE for giving us the opportunity to learn the rudiment of journalism outside our classroom", she said.

Also, according to a release signed by the association President, General Secretary and Public Relations Officer; Omole Isaac, Jonathan Oladimeji and Adejumo Kabir respectively, they promised to continue to serve as important link between the campus editors and full fledged editors in Nigeria with strong allegiance to their motto: "truth conquers all"

Federal Goverment Declares Tuesday Public Holiday

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, May 1, 2018, as a public holiday to celebrate the 2018 Workers’ Day.

The Minister of Interior, Lt Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd.), who disclosed this in Abuja on Friday, congratulated Nigerian workers on their loyalty, the strength of character, hard work, sacrifice and dedication to building a greater Nigeria.

The minister in a statement by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr. M. Umar, appreciated “the central role workers play in government activities and decisions, and for keeping faith with the present administration in its resolve to build a better Nigeria.
” Dambazau solicited the continuous support of Nigerian workers in government’ s effort to re- position the economy and uphold the shared legacy of all Nigerians. “The minister wishes all Nigerian workers a successful May Day celebration,” the statement said

"No Change In Resumption Dates"- OAU DSA

With few days left to the resumption date of academic activities in Obafemi Awolowo University for the 2017/2018 session , the university management has ascertained against the rumours of change in resumption that there is no change as earlier proposed.

Speaking today with OAU Peeps News Agency, the University Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. I.A Aransi affirmed that the resumption date for the fresh students and returning student remains April 29 and May 13 respectively with lectures commencing May 14,2018.

Sex Scandal: OAU Vice Chancellor Confirms Suspension Of Alleged Lecturer

Audio Conversation: Obafemi Awolowo University Suspends Professor Richard I. Akindele

The Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has received and considered the interim report of the Committee set up to investigate the allegation of sexual harassment revealed in a recent audio recording.

In the interim report submitted to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, Professor Richard I. Akindele, of the Department of Management and Accounting, is now established to be the lecturer in the controversial “marks for sex” audio recording. The female voice has also been identified as that of Miss Monica Osetobe OSAGIE, a Postgraduate Student on the Master of Business Administration Regular programme.

Although the Investigative Committee had invited both Professor Richard I. Akindele and Miss Osagie, only Professor Akindele had appeared before the Committee, while Miss Osagie is yet to appear or make any representation. The report indicated that many other witnesses appeared before the Committee and gave useful evidence. The University is making efforts to ensure that Miss Osagie appears before the investigative committee so that it can hear her side of the case and promptly submit its final report.

The Committee observed that a prima facie case of inappropriate relationship with the female student had been established against Professor Richard I. Akindele. The Vice-Chancellor, having carefully and dispassionately considered the report, also came to the conclusion that a prima facie case of serious misconduct had been established.

Having regard to the gravity of the offence for which Professor Richard I. Akindele is found to be prima facie liable, the Vice-Chancellor, in line with the Code of Conduct for the University Community and acting under all the laws and regulations of the University enabling him in that regard, has directed that Professor Richard I. Akindele be suspended forthwith from the University, pending the final determination of the disciplinary case against him.

Under the provisions of the relevant Statute of the University, an academic staff can only be dismissed from service or have his or her appointment terminated only when the matter on which consideration is being given has been investigated by a Joint Council and Senate Committee, and the staff has appeared before the committee with his or her counsel, if so desired. This procedure is the minimum requirement of the law and regulations of the University. It should therefore be noted that the suspension of Professor Richard I. Akindele is on the basis of the findings of the Investigative Committee that he is prima facie liable, and this decision will abide, pending the final determination of the case by the Council of the University.

We will like to reiterate that OAU will continue to do everything legally and morally acceptable in pursuance of its avowed commitment to zero tolerance for sexual harassment, intimidation and, or coercion.

Bishop Oyedepo Storms OAU For Special Miracle Service

The Special Miracle service, an event scheduled to hold on the 17th and 18th of April 2018, concluded successfully today. It was a crusade organized by the Obafemi Awolowo Campus Christian Mobilization Committee in conjunction with Winners Chapel, Lagere branch.

The special service was graced by the founder of the Living Faith Church, also known as  Winners Chapel- Bishop David Oyedepo, who was the invited minister for the program. The program which started at some minutes after 4pm at the New Crusade Ground, OAU was attended by a large crowd of people who came to partake of the apostolic visitation, as well as dignitaries of the institution such as the Vice Chancellor and other professors from different faculties.

Bishop Oyedepo who preached on the topic "understanding our Root in the supernatural" through Isaiah 7vs 14 stated that Miracles are Ordained to be following the great Ife community.

He further centered on validating miracles as an unexplainable act of God in the affairs of men. He also emphasized what it takes to trigger the supernatural and experience signs and wonders as a way of life as Christians.

He concluded with  prayer sessions for the university, the city, the state and the country at large, as well as the Church in Nigeria.

Also at the event is the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede  who welcomed and thanked Bishop Oyedepo for the visitation. He also thanked the congregation and the organizers for making the programme a success.

The final session of the crusade held the next morning and was concluded with another sermon, which centered on more nuggets of the faith.

Finally, it was promised by the University Joint Christian Mission that similarly eventful programs would be scheduled to hold subsequently during the course of the year to further pray for continuous peace and progress of the great Ife community.

OAU Sex Scandal: Probe Committee Recommends Suspension Of Lecturer

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has reportedly suspended Prof. Richard Akindele, whose telephone conversation in which he demanded for sex from a female student was recorded and released on social media, Punch newspaper has reported.

A member of the probe committee set up to look into the matter, who pleaded anonymity confided this to our correspondent in Osogbo on Wednesday.

He said the committee recommended the suspension of the professor in a report of the committee set up by the university to probe the matter and to authenticate the veracity of the telephone conversation, where the lecturer demanded to have sex with the student five times before he would upgrade her mark from 33 to a pass mark.

In the leaked telephone conversation, the female student, who our correspondent gathered was a postgraduate student doing her Masters in Business Administration, initiated a call and asked the professor about their earlier discussion on the matter.

The member of the committee said, “The committee recommended the indefinite suspension of the professor pending the time the final report will be ready. The committee established a prima facie case against the professor. But note that this is the interim report of the committee.

“The committee invited the professor and the female student. We identified the student and invited her, but she did not appear. Only the professor honoured our invitation. I don’t want to tell you what he said on the telephone.”

The committee member said the lady was an MBA regular student and added that the final report would be submitted after the lady might have appeared before the panel.

However, the Public Relations Officer of the OAU, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, when contacted on the telephone, told our correspondent that he would find out to know if the report was ready and get back. But he had yet to do that as of the time of filing this report.

The Vice Chancellor of the OAU, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, had, on Sunday, told our correspondent that the report of the committee would be ready on Wednesday and that it would be released to the public.

It will be recalled that the the lady had released a telephone conversation she allegedly had with the professor; and the lecturer was heard demanding sex with the lady.

The lady eventually rejected the condition given during the conversation.

National Merit Award – For applicants from Non-Host communities

Requirements/Eligibility
To qualify for consideration, applicants MUST be:

Registered Full TIME undergraduates in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions
Certified 100 level students at the time of application (Only students admitted in 2017/2018 academic session)

- 200 level students and above
- Current beneficiaries of similar Awards from other Companies and Agencies

Surrounded By Wizards, What Does One Become?

A review of Olawale “Brymo” Asimi’s Oso Album

“Depth is a function of a listener’s individual interpretation” The half true words of the one of the many friends with whom I have had a conversation over the depth of Brymo’s latest piece of art. Interestingly, my friend belongs to the school of thought that believes that Brymo is not as deep as he sounds. Trying to quote him, “Brymo only takes advantage of the slow typical rhythm that by default gives any listener the first impression that embedded within such rhythm is quality”.

Certainly my friend is not the only peddler of this perspective to Brymo’s art and interestingly, Oso is an album that tempts any true fan of the Carpenter’s son to explore this opinion. The album which is about 38 minutes long like others before it contains 11 tracks and although the similarity in tempo and rhythm make it all seem like one very long song, the dissimilarities in themes allows a listener a means to distinguish each track from others and even some previous of his previous work. The album explores a number of themes; from the basic characteristics of the human nature to the usual Brymo’s style of preaching virtues and sending messages to past, present and posterity.

Oso is the Yoruba word for “Wizard” and while the controversy continues to exist on the depth of Brymo’s lyrics, Oso might just have certified the Band; The Lagos Touts, as wizards of their craft. Good enough lyrics or not, the acclaimed touts manage to give every track a vehicle that by itself gives the average listener goosebumps, gaining enough attention to allow Brymo wow (or not) such listener. Of course, Brymo also gracefully takes full advantage his natural Baritone to even further hold that attention, and indeed, while this might be good enough for some, especially first timers, for fans who have followed the albums of Brymo, appreciating the improving depth of the artist and his art over the years, there is that tendency to expect more from Oso.

Another interesting thing about Oso is its nomenclature. At the mention of a “Wizard”, magic is expected and while this nomenclature might be Brymo’s way of declaring his latest work as magic, the only seeming relationship between the name of the album and its content comes in “Olumo”, the tenth track of the album. In Olumo, Brymo sings fondly of the literary icon Wole Soyinka, whose surname translates to “Surrounded By Wizards” and just might be the source of the name of the album. Even though Brymo goes on in the song to pay homage to former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo; the acclaimed gnome of Owu and in the final moments of the song; the Royal father of the home of the famous Olumo rock. In anyway, the mystery of the name “Oso” is certainly one of the selling points of the album.

The album opens with “No Be Me”, a song that reminds us of the limitations of man in the control of his circumstances and perhaps the frustration that might accompany these limitations. The beauty of “No Be Me” lies in the way Brymo is able to relate sub-themes like love and corruption amongst others to sell the larger theme of the song. “Mama” comes immediately after and lasts for about 1 minute within which Brymo quickly sneaks a message to his mother on how things have really not changed since his birth. “Heya”, which as at the time of this review is the only song with a video comes in third on the album and as much as the video of the song did cause controversy, the song is a testament to the above average songwriting abilities of Brymo. The words embedded in Heya, like its video send a message that requires some mental effort from an interested listener to discern. And it only gets better in “Patience and Goodluck” as the artist plays with the names of the former first couple of the country but yet manages to make serious music from his pun.  

“God Is In Your Mind” takes the listener on a journey that is certainly deeper than the superficial. Somehow, the track puts the magic in your mind and allows you to find it. “Time is so kind” and “Entropy” then give way to “Money Launderers and Heart Breakers” which does its best to remind us of our immediate society and our roles in bringing it to its current state. The last three tracks of the album; “Olanrewaju”, “Olumo” and “Ba’nuso”, which unsurprisingly seem to rank as most listeners favorite come in Yoruba language with “Olanrewaju” seemingly preaching virtues to posterity, “Olumo” praising the past (the ones closest to the past) and Ba’nuso advising the present.

Oso, due to its unique brevity, is the kind of album that is conveniently put on repeat. Although some of the songs on the album share similar themes and delivery methods that came on the Klitoris album, the less content of the Oso album which is becoming a trademark of Brymo prevents the overload that often gives a listener an excuse to not fully absorb one song before moving onto another. And as much the argument of depth exists, I believe that the major basis of comparing the depth of Brymo’s art is Brymo’s art. To say Oso is not deep is to say Merchants, Dealers and Slaves or Klitoris or Tabula Rasa is deeper. For indeed, only a few other Nigerian musicians peddle art at that depth!

Exploring the alternative postulation of the nomenclature of the album, perhaps the album did get its name from the sage: “Oso yinka”. Or in another adventurous attempt at seeing where the name comes from, perhaps it’s a testimony of the wizardry of the Lagos touts: Brymo’s acknowledgement of the wizardry that surrounds him and its effects on him because really, when surrounded by wizards, what else can one become?

Official Statement By The University Over OAU Lecturer-Student Sex Scandal

The attention of the authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife has been drawn to an audio recording, now trending on the social media, of a telephone conversation ostensibly between one Professor Akindele and a female student of the University. The recording suggests that the lecturer was demanding sex in return for grade which clearly amounts to sexually harassing the lady.

Since the matter came to our notice, the University has begun the process of identifying the characters involved in this apparent breach of its regulations, the Code of Conduct for the University Community and the Anti-sexual Harassment policy, in full compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations and procedures of the University. To this end, the University has set up a high-powered committee to investigate the allegation and submit its report within one week. Anyone found culpable will be dealt with decisively.

I wish to assure the general public that Obafemi Awolowo University has zero tolerance for sexual harassment. The University considers sexual harassment as a serious offence contrary to its Code of Conduct for the University Community and against the Anti-sexual Harassment Policy of the University. It is totally and morally reprehensible, and the University will never condone such act by any staff or student.

Once again, I wish to reiterate that no one found culpable of this serious misconduct of sexual harassment will go unpunished.

Embassy Of Ireland In Nigeria #PeaceWriteNow Writing Contest 2018

2018 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. The Agreement, ratified in both Ireland and Northern Ireland in May 1998, has played a very significant role in creating peace on the island of Ireland since that time.

This year the Embassy of Ireland in Nigeria undertook the #Road2Peace programme in collaboration with Likeminds. This involved travelling to six institutions of higher learning to speak about the Northern Ireland Peace Process and discuss current challenges in Nigeria. We listened to many young Nigerians who shared their thoughts, ideas and hopes for sustainable peace and dialogue and asked what they could do.

On this journey, we heard many young voice but we want to hear more. This is why to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, the Embassy has launched the #PeaceWriteNow Writing Contest.

Interested candidates should write an essay on the broad theme "Fostering Sustainable Peace and Dialogue in Nigeria". Entrants are invited to focus on the role that they can play to foster sustainable peace. Areas of interest could be youth empowerment and discussion of the Good Friday Agreement. The deadline for entries is 17:00 Friday April 20th.

The top five selected essays will receive prizes as follows:

1st Prize: €500 cash grant for books.
2nd Prize: €250 Cash grant for books.
3rd Prize: €100 cash grant for books.
4th Prize: A book on peace building signed by the Ambassador and a certificate of appreciation.
5th Prize: A Certificate of Appreciation.

The Embassy will host an event in early May where selected participants will be invited to read from their essays.

A selection of essays may also be published in a short book. Any author of an essay selected for publication will be contacted in advance and will receive a copy of the publication.
