Does The Exam Really End? – Pope Jay

For those who have seen the teachers of the basic schools prepare when they have promotional examinations and some other exams, doesn’t it ever push you to wonder when the exams all end? We all get that “ordinary sign board, I no go read” syndrome after writing most major exams and I have often wondered if this feat is quite achievable considering the fact that reading is more of a subconscious activity and we often confuse it with studying which is more conscious and voluntary.

So you write WASSCE, NECO SSCE, UTME and POST UTME and you start to feel as though your exam days are over but in actual sense if you pass these exams, you are headed to one of the “House of Exams” and if your “House of Exams” happen to be Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife…Congratulations! Your Work has just begun!

You finally graduate from school (either by crook or credit), and it seems as though the exams are over but then you either choose to further your education (go back to the “House of Exams”), get a job (where you will be examined directly or indirectly from time to time) or become an entrepreneur (where unseen factors are examining you, your failure/success then determine whether you are another Warren Buffet or just another passerby). To cut the long story short, the exams don’t end. The examiners, scope, venues and forms of the exam; these are the things that change most times.

Having established this fact, an inference that can be drawn is; if the exams don’t end, the learning cannot too (except a man wants to keep on failing). However, one beautiful fact about learning is that unlike studying it does not only entail reading and so if you are not much of a reader (which you should also work on), there are other ways to learn that may seem more “interesting”; listening to audio messages on the topic, seeing demonstrative videos etc. By doing these things, you can actually develop yourself on a topic without opening a lot of books and on the long run you are preparing for one exam you might write in the future.

Most, if not all, of us Great Ife students just concluded exams and are presently recuperating and recovering lost blood but I simply want to implore and admonish us that in the midst of our eating and drinking, we should try to learn whatever we can. That movie you saw today, the book you started yesterday, the radio show you listened to might be the basis of your exam tomorrow. BE PREPARED!

OWSD 2015 Postgraduate Training Fellowships For Young Women

Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDC) at Centres of Excellence in the South. The Fellowship is offered to women scientists to pursue postgraduate research in a field of the natural sciences. Deadline for applications: 31 May 2015.

Programme Details

This fellowship programme is for female students from Sub-Saharan Africa or Least Developed Countries (LDCs) who wish to pursue postgraduate training leading to a doctorate degree at a centre of excellence in the South outside their own country.
- Please read the following information carefully before applying.
- Only women scientists from Sub-Saharan Africa and/or one of the Least Developed Countries can apply.
- Host institutions must be located in a developing country.
- Applications that are incomplete or illegible cannot be considered. Please make sure all the requested enclosures are submitted together with your application.

Purpose

With funds generously provided by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), OWSD has instituted a fellowship programme for female students from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), who wish to pursue postgraduate training leading to a PhD, at centres of excellence in the South (developing countries), outside their own country.
The general purpose of the scheme is to contribute to the emergence of a new generation of women leaders in science and technology, and to promote their effective participation in the scientific and technological development of their countries.
The specific aims of the scheme are:
  • To improve access to educational and training opportunities in science and technology for young and talented women graduates from Sub-Saharan Africa and LDCs.
  • To increase the scientific productivity and creativity of women scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa and LDCs.
  • To empower a new generation of talented women to assume a leadership role in science and technology and their application to sustainable development.

Conditions

The scheme provides fellowships to young female students from Sub-Saharan African countries and/or LDCs, to enable them to pursue postgraduate studies leading to PhD degrees at centres of excellence (renowned research institutions/universities). The institute must be in a developing country other than the applicant's home country.
The fellowship is offered to carry out postgraduate research in the natural, engineering and information technology sciences. Each fellowship will be offered for up to three years and will cover the following:
- Travel expenses to and from the host institute;
- A monthly allowance to cover accommodation and meals while in the host country, the amount of which will be determined in consultation with the host institution;
- Refund of visa costs;
- A contribution for medical insurance;
- Attending one international conference/training course during the period of the fellowship;
- On a competitive basis, attending of scientific communication and proposal writing workshop.
An applicant who has already registered or who wishes to register as a PhD student at her home institute can choose a sandwich option, whereby part of the research programme is undertaken at a host institute in another developing country. In this case the fellowship provides support (travel, accommodation and living expenses) only while at the host institution. The minimum period abroad is six months. The fellowship does not provide support while the applicant is at the home institute.
Alternatively, an applicant can enroll as a full-time research student at an institution outside her country, in this case the fellowship will provide support (travel, accommodation and living expenses) for 3 years.
The host institution will be expected to provide the necessary facilities such as tuition, training, supervision, laboratory supplies etc.
Accompanying persons are not eligible for support.

Host Institution

This is a South-South fellowship scheme, promoting scientific exchange among young researchers from developing countries. While applicants must come from a more restricted list of least developed countries (see list above), host institutes can be located in any developing country.
N.B. To be considered for selection, applicants must provide a preliminary acceptance letter from at least one host institute (see sample in the application form).
  • Applicants should select up to three host institutes outside their home country that are centres of scientific excellence in the applicants' chosen field. The three host choices must be located in different countries (e.g. three host choices all located in South Africa would not be eligible).
  • A list of recommended institutes by scientific field is available on www.owsd.net or by email request to fellowships@owsd.net
  • Institutes not on the OWSD list may also be considered if there are supporting letters and recommendations.
  • To be eligible to apply, applicants must identify a prospective supervisor willing to work with them and apply for preliminary acceptance at the chosen host institute. See “guidelines for selecting a host institute” on page 9.
  • To request preliminary acceptance at the chosen host institute(s), applicants should contact the chosen host institute(s) or prospective host supervisor with the following documents:
  1. Updated CV;
  2. Short research proposal (2-3 pages);
  3. Sample preliminary acceptance letter (see sample ohttp://www.uct.ac.zan page 10), requesting admission at the host institute under the OWSD fellowship;
  4. For sandwich option only: No Objection certificate from the Head/Director of their home institute (see sample on page 11).
Acceptance could be facilitated by selecting from one of the institutions that has an agreement of collaboration with OWSD:
a) The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), China. For a full list of CAS institutes see  http://english.cas.cn/institutes/;

AIT Free To Cover Buhari's Activities -APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that all accredited media organizations in the country, including the African Independent Television (AIT), are free to cover the activities of the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the incoming Buhari Administration will not discriminate against any media organization, irrespective of its role during the electioneering campaign leading up to the recent polls.

It however enjoined all media organizations to observe the highest level of professional standards in carrying out their duties.

”There is a Code of Ethics guiding the practice of journalism in Nigeria, and this demands every journalist to ensure a strict adherence to the highest levels of ethics and professionalism in carrying out their duties.

”There must be repercussions, within the realms of the law, for media organizations which have wantonly breached the Code of Ethics of the journalism profession and turned themselves to partisans instead of professionals. But such repercussions will not include barring any accredited media organization from covering the activities of the President-elect,” APC said.

"Buhari's Restriction On AIT: Undemocratic, Unpresidential And Unacceptable"

By Solomon Tonye

My heart was filled with grief after reading the Vanguard Report titled "Hate campaign: Buhari fights back, bars AIT from covering his activities".

The question that stroke through my mind was "Can this be be justified in any sane democracy?".

It appears like Muhammadu Buhari is yet to come to terms with the present day democratic dispensation that he is bound to lead for the next for years or he is just acting naive. Perhaps the Daura-born General wants to bring back Decree 4 through the back door or he is out to fight any media organisation that he considers to be his adversary. Whatever be the case, Nigerians will not allow anyone to tamper with the freedom of media as provided by the 1999 Constitution.

President-elect Muhammadu Buhari need to be reminded that Sections 22 and 39 (1)(2) (quoted below) specifically made provision for Press Freedom.

Press Freedom In Nigeria's Constitution
Section 22 of the Nigerian 1999 constitution states that: “the press, radio, television and other agencies of mass media shall at all times be free to uphold the fundamental objectives contained in this chapter and uphold the responsibility and accountability of the government to the people.”

Section 39(1) States that "Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference.
Section 39(2) further went on to say "Without prejudice to the generality of subsection(1) of this section, every person shall be entitled to own, establish and operate any medium for the dissemination of information, ideas and opinion."

Buhari Should Remember His Words on Press Freedom
At his interactive session with members of Newspapers Proprietors of Nigeria (NPAN) and Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) on March 17, 2015, he pledged to uphold Press Freedom and to be a friend of the Press. In his own words...

“Concerning the Decree 4 of 1984, I have to assure you that the time for that is over. That was part of military administration and dictatorship, but I have also promised you that I am now a converted, and converted democrat. Therefore, I want to assure you that I am going to be a friend of the media and this time, I will work well with you as friends and partners in the development of the nation, and that is my promise to you.”

“I want to give you my full assurances that in this democratic dispensation, I will ensure that the Nigerian Constitution is upheld. This includes respect for the media, respect for the right to free expression and freedom of speech. I have said elsewhere that I cannot change the past. But I can change the present and the future. Dictatorship goes with military rule as do edicts such as Decree 4"

"...I will continue to promote the consolidation of democracy in our great country, Nigeria, by guaranteeing that the media’s freedom is not compromised in any way. I give you my full assurances that the Nigerian media will be free under our APC government.”.

The Unfortunate AIT Restriction
It is a unfortunate that President-elect Muhammadu Buhari that claimed to be a "reformed democrat" throughout the electioneering period will take the ignoble decision of preventing AIT from covering his activities even before taking oath of office. It is also unfortunate that the man that pledged to be a friend of the media will issue restricting order on a law abiding corporate citizen and a legally recognise media house. Buhari is expected to treat all members of the Media in the most appropriate manner. He should remember that the rights of the media as enshrined in the Constitution is not subject to change via Presidential desire. If he hasn't been told, he should be aware that his restriction on AIT is undemocratic and can never be tolerated in any sane democracy. If the President-elect has anything against AIT, he should seek redress in court. He may not like AIT as a media outfit but he should allow them conduct their duties unfettered as long as they operate within the ambit of the law.

Finally, let me remind President-elect Muhammadu Buhari that Nigerians are looking up to him to fulfil his numerous electoral promises. We will not tolerate any form of impunity or "executive rascality" whether from him(as President) or from any officer of his incoming government.

God Bless Nigeria

Last Year Reduction In OAU School Fees Effected In New Payment Structure

The N3,000 reduction in school fees of Obafemi Awolowo University students following a protest that greeted the astronomical increment in the same fees last year has finally been effected as promised by the university management.

Students of the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Environmental and Design Management and Faculty of Technology will now pay N24,700 as against the N30,700 they paid last year. The University management promised to shed the N3,000 deduction in the fees last year to the payment for the new session (2014/2015 academic session). So the supposed new fees structure payable this new session which is N27,700 eventually got reduced by the N3,000 deduction of last year. Now, the students are expected to pay N24,700.

Also supposed to be affected by this development are students of the College of Health Sciences and Faculty of Pharmacy. Just like the other faculties affected, their students should now pay N27,700 as against the N33,700 they paid the last time. As at the time of filing this report, we are yet to verify the reduction in their own fees.

In the meantime, the school e-portal is now opened for undergraduates to start paying for the 2014/2015 academic session.

It will be recalled that the Ibikunle-led 2013/2014 parliamentary session led the Students' Union to confront the increase in schools fees and in a Press Statement on Sunday, August 23, 2014 counted the further reduction of N3,000 as parts of the gains of the struggle against school fees hike.

Ondo Deputy Governor, Ali Olanusi, Impeached

The Ondo State Deputy Governor, Ali Olanusi, was impeached on Monday morning by members of the state House of Assembly.‎

Twenty two of the 26 members of the Assembly supported the impeachment of the Deputy Governor, who recently moved from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.

The motion for his impeachment was moved by the majority leader, Ifedayo Akinsoyinu, from Ondo West 11 and seconded by Olatunji Dauro from Owo 11‎.

The Speaker, Jumoke Akindele, subsequently ruled that all government property in the custody of the Deputy Governor be retrieved by the Permanent Secretary of the Deputy Governor’s office.

The Assembly had last Tuesday (April 22) served an impeachment notice on Mr. Olanusi.

The Assembly, in the notices signed by 20 of its 26 members, accused the deputy governor of alleged gross misconduct.
Some of the allegations levelled against him include financial misappropriation, absenteeism from official duties and causing disaffection in the state cabinet.

The Majority Leader, Ifedayo Akinsoyinu, representing Ondo West Constituency 2, moved the motion, which was seconded by Yinka Banso, representing Akoko North West Constituency.

The Speaker, Jumoke Akindele, presided over that sitting. The House said its action was in consonance with the 1999 Constitution.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Kunle Olujuigbe, said the process would be transparent. Mr. Olanusi had two days before the March 28 presidential election defected to the All Progressives Congress from the Peoples Democratic Party.

He, alongside his boss, Governor Segun Mimiko, had left the Labour Party, on which platform they were elected, for the PDP.

Only last week, apparently due to his defection to the APC, Mr. Olanusi was assaulted by suspected thugs who tried to stop him from entering the Government House.

Gov. Mimiko Appoints Lasisi Oluboyo As The New Deputy Governor Of Ondo State

Ondo state Commissioner for Agriculture, Lasisi Oluboyo has emerged as the newly appointed Deputy Governor in Ondo state following the early Monday morning impeachment of Ali Olanusi by the state House of Assembly.

At a resumed hearing this morning in Akure, the state House of Assembly announced that the state governor, Olusegun Mimiko has sent Mr. Oluboyo’s name to them for ratification.

SMS: The Pain Or The Shame -Pope Jay

SMS: The Pain Or The Shame -Pope Jay

 One of the traditions of the Students of the great Ife that has endured the times is the Systematic/Scientific/Serious Maximum Shishi simply known as SMS; the SMS is a form of punishment in which the person or people involved in the crime is/are “paraded” around the halls of residence most times beaten at each hall or at intervals in the journey. This punishment is usually the consequence of quite a number of crimes on campus ranging from Physical assault, rape to even petty theft to mention a few.

  Since my entry into this great citadel of learning and culture, I have disagreed with this punishment. I have only seen it as a form of jungle justice only justified by the idea that our predecessors had not deemed it fit to scrap this violent act. However on reading George R.R Martins’ fifth sequel in the Song of Ice and Fire book series whose movie is popularly known as “The Game of Thrones”, I saw a form of punishment that was somewhat similar to our very own SMS: Queen Cersei’s Walk of Shame. In this form of punishment, the criminal who in the book’s context was Queen Cersei walked a particular distance naked and the people of the town (King’s landing) though not allowed to touch her made jest and threw different things at her.

On Wednesday, 15th of April, a thief was caught in Angola Hall. The case was a spectacular one because the thief and his preferred victim were actually the best of friends. I would summarize the event in a story;

  Ade and Sola were very close friends; they met at tutorial centre  while both preparing for the entrance exams of the Obafemi Awolowo University and both eventually gained admission to study English and Public Administration respectively. Ade got accommodation in Angola Hall and Sola in ETF hall but perhaps due to the serene nature of ETF and the more liveliness of Angola, Sola was almost always at Angola. In fact, he became more of an “Angolan” than most legal occupants of Angola.

In the early parts of March, Sola lost his phone when he travelled home and as time and true investigation would later unfold he then decided to steal his friend’s phone and Laptop. When caught, he later claimed that he did this because his friend made jest of him when he lost his phone. Ade who was very close to heaven after losing these valuables did not lose faith.
  He continued to search and at a point wanted to try out a more traditional approach (“ti ese ile bo” as the yorubas would say) in his search. Things however took a miraculous turn when on Wednesday, 15th April 2015 Angola Hall’s Chairman elect, Ekiti as he is popularly known, took up the case; politely demanding statements from the room mates and further conducting searches. It was one of this searches that led them to Sola’s room in ETF where they were to search his bags, Sola however in his cleverness led them to search another man’s bags making them believe that they were his. The truth caught up with him when the rightful owner of the bags saw them and challenged them, eventually showing them Sola’s bag where the valuables were recovered.

  I learnt that he was dealt with appropriately at the level of the Students Union Building but where my confusion came was when it got to the point of tradition taking its course in form of the SMS; the ones handling the case made us know that he couldn’t withstand any more beating as his health had deteriorated drastically and this I agreed with but where I didn’t quite agree was the part where he wasn’t made to suffer the shame that came with stealing.
  Over time, I have actually come to see that SMS as it were isn’t just about the physical pain and just like in George Martin’ s book; the SMS is our Walk of Shame. Showing the thief’s face to the public, people shaking heads as he was paraded, the whispers whenever he walked by thereafter… these were integral parts of the punishment.
 Having debated with quite a number of people about the SMS over time, I have seen that it may not be entirely removable from the OAU students’ community but perhaps we could adjust the Modus Operandi of this generationally handed down weapon against crime and social vices, perhaps we could make it less Violent and More Psychological; after all we are the

"Buhari Has Drawn The Battle-Line With South-East, South-South" — Intersociety

There is urgent need for the leadership of the All Progressives Congress to ferry and register its President-Elect, Retired Major General Muhammadu Buhari, for intensive training at the National Democratic Institute based in Massachusetts Avenue in Washington DC, USA or its equivalent elsewhere in overseas. This public call of ours is of uttermost public importance following blunders inherent in Mr. Buhari’s recent public comments following his presidential emergence in the highly divisive and ethnicised presidential poll. The President-Elect’s comments are also found to be highly ethnical, divisive, sectional, vindictive, undemocratic and unfriendly to rule of law and due process. The totality of these is against the spirit and letters of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, which the President-Elect will swear to uphold, abide by and enforce at all times come 29th May 2015.

Apart from promising Nigerians heaven and earth when sworn in, the President-Elect also completely lacks democratic pedigree needed to blend and bind and smoothly govern highly multi ethno-religiously divided country called Nigeria. For instance, it is correct to say that the President-Elect is notoriously ignorant of the sanctity of the ballot box and the need to respect and uphold same at all times. Till date, the President-Elect has not ceased in making provocative, divisive and vindictive remarks against the electoral decisions of Nigerians who voted for political parties other than his APC particularly the voters of the South-East and the South-South geopolitical zones. He is also very bitter and unhappy with the pattern of voting in Lagos State where his party – APC – was given a hot chase by his opponent party – PDP – with difference of 160,000 and 150,000 votes in favour of his party against his opponent party in the Presidential/National Legislative (792,000 votes for APC & 632,000 for PDP) and the Governorship/State Legislative polls (811,000 votes for APC & 659,000 for PDP) respectively.

The President-Elect must have expected a one party voting pattern in Lagos State in total disregard to the irrevocable rights of the citizens of Nigeria to vote freely and conscientiously not minding the ethno-religious backgrounds of their preferred candidates. Mr. Muhammadu Buhari has also continuously made highly negative references to the voting and its patterns in “the South” particularly the South-East and the South-South geopolitical zones. Each time he speaks, he describes the voting in the area as “a sham” on account of the massive rejection of his APC by the people of the two zones. In his recent press interviews to a number of foreign news agencies including the BBC Hausa Service, he made same negative and provocative comments. In his interview last Saturday (11th April) after his voting in Daura, he singled out for extensive attacks the South-South and the Southeast including the states of Edo, Rivers and Imo where his party governs no thanks to defection (in Rivers and Imo states).

The President-Elect’s perceived primordial sense of reasoning and judgment totally makes it very difficult for him to pause and ask: “Why are the people of the South-South and the South-East both home and outside rejecting my party and candidacy at polls and how can they be pacified for the sake of united, purposeful and prosperous Nigeria?”

It is extremely important to state here that those gifted and equipped to govern well in multi ethno-religious democracy should fundamentally x-ray and see the electoral decisions of the ethnic nationalities against them as early warning signals that must be bottled and removed from transforming into triggers of intractable socio-value conflict and other disturbances now or in future.

Conversely, under the President-Elect and its party, the reverse is grossly the case. For instance, while the two referenced polls in the South-East and the South-South zones are “a sham” in the eyes and perception of the President-Elect and his Party – APC; those held in the North are seen by them as “very credible”. In Mr. Muhammadu Buhari’s interview under reference, he saw nothing wrong in the polls held in the North, but saw everything wrong in those held in the South. That millions of voters in the North who voted in the two polls are under-age children do not amount to poll rigging in the eyes and perception of the President-Elect and his party; likewise other widespread complaints of electoral malpractices in his zone and the South made against his party and its agents.

In a recent interview with the Channel’s Television, the out-going governor of Kano State, Mr. Musa Kwankwaso, admitted that “Almajiris” (millions of uncared and abandoned children in the North) were used to vote out President Goodluck Jonathan.” Despite the fact that the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act of 2010 totally ban and forbid children under the age of 18 years from voting, the likes of the President-Elect sees nothing wrong in it criminally, morally and socially. The international observers have also turned blind eyes over the issue and concentrated in the South. The Northern political leaders including the President-Elect appear worried over efforts to educate and develop the “Almajiris” and prefer using them for political violence and roguish and illegitimate voting for the purpose of grabbing democratic powers. This can be inferred from Gov Kwankwaso’s statement under reference.

In Rivers State, over one million, four hundred thousand votes went to the opponent party (PDP) of the President-Elect while a paltry number went to his party – APC following the referenced Presidential poll. As expected, the President-Elect and his party described it as “a sham and massive rigging”. Again, in the governorship poll held in the state, another one million plus votes went to the party opposing the APC and the same labeling rented the air. Rivers State is a state under APC control by defection with all security apparatus under its fold. The referenced state’s out-going governor ascended to governorship through judicial coronation. The State as APC State by defection; is also reported to have bankrolled recent APC State and national polls owing to its status as the richest oil state in Nigeria. Lagos State is also said to be the second APC sponsor state. It is important to state here that the loss of the two polls in Rivers State by the President-Elect and his party-APC is likely to go beyond allegations of widespread rigging.

The President-Elect and his party-APC are also very intolerant, undemocratic and alarmist. Their constant reference to poll results where they lost as “sham” and “widely rigged” is not only a case in point, but also despicable and condemnable. For instance, when the President-Elect and his APC was in a verge of winning the presidential election, incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan called and congratulated him and conceded defeat; when Mr. Samuel Ortom of APC was in a verge of winning the Benue State gubernatorial election, incumbent Gov. Gabriel Suswan of PDP called and congratulated him in advance.

When Mallam Nasir El-Rufai of APC was in a verge of winning the Kaduna State gubernatorial election, incumbent Gov. Mukhtar Yero of PDP called and congratulated him in advance; when Mr. Bindo Mohammed Jibrilla of APC was in a verge of winning the Adamawa State governorship poll, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu of PDP who came third, conceded defeat and congratulated him; when incumbent Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State and his APC was in a verge of winning the governorship poll, former Governor Alao-Akala of LP called and congratulated him in advance; when incumbent Gov. Ibukunle Amosun was in a verge of winning the Ogun State governorship poll, Mr. Gboyega Isiaka of PDP called and congratulated him in advance.

Conversely, when Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of PDP won the Enugu State's gubernatorial election, Mr. Okey Ezea of APC called for cancellation of the results on account of alleged malpractices; when incumbent Gov. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo of PDP won the Gombe State governorship the APC supporters burnt down an Emir’s Palace; when Sen. Gyang Pwajok of PDP was taken an early lead in the Plateau State governorship poll, Mr. Simon Lalong of APC, who eventually won, called for outright cancellation of the poll; when Mr. Udom Emmanuel of PDP won the Akwa-Ibom State governorship poll with 996,000 votes, Mr. Umana Umana of APC who scored 89, 000 votes called for cancellation of the entire election.

Further, when Mr. Nyesom Nwike of PDP was in a verge of winning the Rivers State governorship poll, incumbent Gov. Rotimi Amechi called the election a sham and demanded for outright cancellation of the entire exercise; when Gov. Peter Ayodele Fayose and his PDP swept most, if not all the seats in the State House of Assembly in Ekiti State, APC cried foul and alleged malpractices and called for cancellation of the poll; and when Gov. Olusegun Mimiko and his PDP won majority seats in the Ondo House of Assembly, the APC rejected the outcome and called for cancellation of the exercise. This is just to mention but a few.

In all, the truth about the just held 2015 general elections in Nigeria is that while the projected explosion of widespread violence was avoided owing to political maturity and civility of Igbo race and the country’s minority ethnic nationalities that were demographically and systematically rigged; the referenced polls fundamentally failed the litmus test of international best practices. As it stands now, three governorship polls have been declared inconclusive owing to poll malpractices and INEC’s gross incompetence.

The polls generally speaking, have been marred by ethnic and religious divisions, political exclusion, mass disenfranchisement, under-age voting, ethno-religious balkanisation, scientific rigging using electronic technology configured along ethno-religious segregation, widespread rigging, violence, as well as impartiality and gross incompetence on the part of Independent National Electoral Commission. Truly speaking, the roguishness associated with the 2015 general elections in Nigeria is comparable in most respects with the 2007 general polls. The 2011 polls, other than its post poll violence; remains the best among the Nigeria’s highly tainted civilian-to-civilian polls of the immediate past.

In view of these, therefore, we wish to state firmly that although the short-term negative outcomes or consequences of the 2015 general elections in Nigeria appeared bottled in terms of projected immediate large scale explosion of violence; there are still long term aspect that must be escorted and cocooned at all times. We seriously doubt the competence and statesmanship potentials of the President-Elect and his party in handling them.

For the President-Elect to handle the referenced long term triggers, he must be made to change his present vengeance or vindictive and primordialist dispositions. In view of his perceived lack of statesmanship, his Party-APC and its foreign backers must come to his rescue by offering him thorough tutorship in democratic principles including political tolerance, rule of law, respect for voting rights and sanctity of the ballot box, respect for civil liberties, due process and multi ethnic democratic governance and ethno-religious and cultural pluralism.

As the President-Elect, Mr. Muhammadu Buhari, ought to be a statesman and father of all to be able to govern smoothly, happily and prosperously a country like Nigeria, which has over 250 ethnic groups and multi religions to its credit. The President-Elect also ought to be fair and accommodating in his referenced public comments. Open exhibition of ethnic, sectional, religious and political disdain against other ethnic nationalities through unfair and primordialist public comments particularly directed against those that voted against him and his party; constitutes a political battle-line with far-reaching consequences both in short term and long terms. When a people feel threatened, culturally, economically and religiously, they can do anything to repel it no matter their size and geopolitical landscape.

The President-Elect ought to have congratulated all Nigerians for successfully voting the candidates and parties of their choice and conscience irrespective of their geopolitical landscapes and ethno-religious groupings. If he thinks that the 2015 general polls in Nigeria were rigged in whole or in part; he should have avoided making sweeping and inciting public comments and implored and allowed the rigged to seek their mandate recovery from poll tribunals.

Interestingly, in all his public comments, he did not see any foul play involving his party-APC in the referenced two polls. In other words, it is only the PDP and others, excluding the APC that rigged in the 2015 polls. The fact that some INEC returning officers with pricking conscience have publicly revealed how they were forced by APC chieftains in places like Oru East LGA of Imo State to write results in favor of their candidates including Gov Rochas Okoroacha; does not mean anything to the President-Elect or constitute rigging. Mr. Buhari’s condemnation of poll rigging should have been made across board including riggers in his party. Till date, the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who once revealed that “election that brought him into office was rigged” is still seen in many quarters as a conscientious statesman and a major contributor to Nigeria’s anti poll rigging therapy.

To avoid disasters of leadership hovering around the President-Elect, which may explode during his Presidency, we pray his party – APC – and its foreign backers in USA and Europe to quickly ferry the President-Elect to the National Democratic Institute in USA to be drilled and mentored in democratic governance and principles.

Interestingly, till date, there are no records of the President-Elect attending any local or international workshop, seminar or fellowship on civil governance, democracy and rights related issues. All his records started and ended with the military. As closed as China is in its politics, its President, Mr. Xi Jinping (62), who was born on 15th June 1953; attended the United States’ Department sponsored International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) (on democracy, good governance & rule of law) 29 years ago at the age of 34.

Sifax Group Presents Bus To OAU Medical Students

A multinational firm, Sifax Group, has said that corporate social responsibility is at the core of the company’s business philosophy.

The group’s Marketing & Corporate Affairs, Mr. Oliver Omajuwa, stated this when the company presented new Toyota Hiace 18-seater bus to the medical students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State.

He said, “Sifax Group has a philosophy of positively impacting the society. The company is about not only profit making but also contributing its quota to the development of critical areas. One of such key areas for us is education. From primary school to the university level, it has been supporting institutions through various avenues, especially in the provision of infrastructure and equipment.

“This gesture is in furtherance of our belief that the private sector has an important role to play in the improvement of the quality of education in the country. We are particularly excited that this bus would of great help to the medical students, in particular and the university as a whole.”

The Provost, College of Health Sciences, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, in his remarks, noted that universities needed to build solid partnerships with various stakeholders in order to fulfil their objectives.

According to Fatusi, collaboration with such stakeholders as corporate organisations, alumni, parents, students, and staff is necessary in view of the inadequate allocations the universities receive from the governments.

He thanked the company for the gesture, which he described as “historic.”

Fatusi added, “This College of Health Sciences is 42 years old and I can confirm to you that this is the first time that a corporate organisation would be donating a bus to us. This donation is a demonstration of a different sense of thinking. We want to express our appreciation to Sifax Group for this benevolence and we believe it is a beginning of a lasting partnership between the university and the company.”

He urged other firms to emulate the company by supporting enduring and socially impactful initiatives in education.

According to him, education pays the biggest dividends and contributes greatly to the development of society.

The Ife University Medical Students Association, President, Dada Ayodele, said the bus would help in fulfilling the association’s objectives, especially in rural medical mission.
