The coalition of students' Union Action Committee and Executives and parliamentary representatives from faculty and departmental associations has proceeded on the proposed rally despite stern warning by the management, OAUPeeps can affirmatively report.

It could be recalled, Prior to the rally, that OAU Peeps published that Student Leaders, management Spar Over Proposed Anti-Cultism Rally through different contrasting circulars.

As at the time of filing this report, Students are seen with different inscripted placards in various halls of Residence like "cultism can not thrive in OAU" " OAU says No to Cultism" "June 10, 1999 remains fresh" amongst others.

OAU student leaders, Management spar Over Proposed Anti-Cultism Rally

The management of obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife has today countered and refuted the proposed Anti-Cultism rally by some student leaders of  the institution.

This is coming barely 24hours after the communiqué of the meeting held between the students' Union Action Committee and Executives and parliamentary representatives from faculty and departmental associations was made public.

As received by OAUPeeps News Agency,  the communiqué stated that the meeting which was held by the student leaders at Social Sciences Lecture theatre II with more than 50 students in attendance resolved at having "temporal  leadership of a 7-man Ad-Hoc committee"

The meeting also agreed to "organize and mobilize for an anti-cultism march of all students in response to the live cult threat of June 1st on the 30th and 31st of May , 2019 at SUB by 4PM".

However, in a circular signed by the Dean of Division of students affairs of the institution has kicked against the proposed rally.

As contained in the circulated piece, the management noted not to go "against students' freedom of association but frowns at a situation where students will take law into their hands in the name of staging an unauthorized protest"

"Accordingly, the management calls on students that are planning this illegal protest to desist from such. Any student or a group of students caught organising any form of protest or participating in any form of protests would be deemed to have willingly violated his or her oat of matriculation and he university management may be compelled to view or review the studentship of such students in relations to the school rules and regulations", part of the circular reads

It could be recalled that this news Agency reported the "threat message" signed by one Mr Oju, sent around the OAU WhatsApp pages stating the invasion of the campus by the "Alora confraternity" confraternity.

This newspaper understand this move in retaliation of the knock down by the univeristy security after the disruption of the organized musical show which featured popular afro star artiste, Zlatan Ibile.

Since then, observations by OAUPeeps News Agency indicate security beef-up in all halls of residence and the main university gate by identification of students through the relevant medium.

Perhaps,  the most emotional  and spirited day on OAU campus is always the July 10 remembrance.

The scary times are when histories that beckon sorrow, shame, regrets and hatred tend to repeat themselves  not as fairy tales, not as narratives but as occurrences for the ears to hear and the eyes to see.

I had just gotten back from one of those clinical postings when my former roommate and classmate messaged me on account of the recent happenings that had happened while I had been offline for days. He sent me the popular screenshot that I later realized has been flying around of a particular threat written by a particular group to scare and kill a particular community. It was a breathtaking moment! Could this be happening in my school? As much as I quickly discarded the authenticity in my mind, the brain could not but give a second thought to the possibility of  it being true. Well, even if it is not true, I said, why will this kind of message generate such uproar in the first place? Something must have gone wrong somewhere. Something must have happened. I went to the website of popular news platform on campus to find out what had happened and I  found news enough to feed my ignorance to that satiety.

What have we done wrong? Oh yes, I know the school has always been porous and lackadaisical about security but I never for once thought such deeper concept could even surface. Cultists attack? How?

It will be a sacrilegious act  if we at this point pour the efforts of George Akinyemi Iwilade Afrika and others who we lost to the July 10, 1999 massacre into the pit of our own passiveness.

Many have faulted the onset of this crisis on the fact that we do not have a students' union. Maybe and maybe not. However, I agree with the argument that the bulk of the security of students is mostly being ensured by the students themselves. There is little to what the men in uniform have been doing to ensure that properties of students are not whisked away by the night workers of our realm and that the lives of people during the dark hours not only rest with how much cautious they are themselves. This is not to say that the  men in uniform don't do their best, but certainly this best could only be buffered and taken to the absolute maximum with the consciousness and cautiousness of the students themselves.

Like I said, we have an extremely porous university, one which only is strong at querying students for wearing a jean torn at the knee but fails to question the thugs who find their way into the school in the name of bus drivers and business owners. We have a system that conveniently harbors thieves from everywhere in Nigeria while chasing the shadows of bonafide students who merely squat with friends in the hostels. We live in a world where events and lecture theaters very often populated at night are left unsecured but a senate building with almost nobody in the building at late hours is fiercely guarded.

The response of the University management to this threat remains unclear to me. First, because it never came in official and second, because it never came in early enough as supposed. A letter of threat is flying around that blood will be spilled, a letter reminding us of the bloody memories of July 10 and our management failed to respond with the iron teeth of the crocodile. If not for anything at all, at least for the sake of restoring peace and ensuring safety.

For whatever, this message might not be as true as painted because of my  personal experience with sponsored stories so as to appeal to consciences and circulate propagandas but what if and just what if it is true?.
 Another fact to be cognizant of is the opportunities this will provide evildoers who dwell amongst us. The ones who will see that day or the near days to it as a good time to perpetrate evil without an atom of suspicion pointing at them.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have only one message especially now that the ones arrested have been released back to the community into which they are a threat to its peace. It is not for us to fear but for us to remain cautious and alert, oriented and active to sense, smell and view anything around us that is suspicious and poses threats. It is now time for us to be as strong as those who fought for this zero tolerance for cultism and to uphold the legacy they left behind. Walk in groups, look around, stop the parties for now and we will get over it soonest.

OAU Management Reacts To "June 1 Threat"

Re: Alarm bells ringing as OAU goes under siege of Cultists threat.

This is to inform the general public that the Management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile - Ife, is aware of an open letter, trending online,  purportedly issued by a pseudonymous "Cultists of Aloha clan" threatening to invade our University campus on " June 1 to rain bullets of death, sorrow and grief on innocent students".

A release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that ordinarily, it is not ideal for the University to respond to such an open letter, detailing what the management is doing to nip the said attack in the bud, considering the implication of such action security wise; but we consider it expedient to inform the stakeholders in the education sector, particularly our students, their parents and, or guardians, alumni and those who place high premium on lives and sanctity of human existence that the university management is on top of the situation, having informed the agencies of government saddled with the responsibility of securing lives and property, in addition to the internal security mechanism that have been put in place.

We hereby assure all parents and, or guardians that the security of their children and wards is guaranteed and that the students are advised to go about their normal academic activities without any apprehension, but should be security conscious and quickly report any strange movement to the appropriate organ of the university.

Admission into the JUPEB Programme 2019/2020 Session

Applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) programme for 2019/2029 Session.
Eligibility

Eligible Candidates must possess minimum of 5 Credits at maximum of two sittings in at least 5 subjects (inclusive of English Language) relevant to the candidates desired course of study in the University.

The Programme leads to the award of JUPEB Certificate which enables candidate gain Direct Entry admissions into Obafemi Awolowo University and other Universities in Nigeria.

Fill the online Application Form and upload your recent passport photograph. The passport photograph must meet the following specifications:

The passport photograph must be coloured with white background (Black and white photograph is not acceptable).

Lecturers May Go On Strike Over Insecurity On Campus-- ASUU OAU

Academic Staff Union of Universities, Obafemi Awolowo University branch, on Thursday called on Inspector General of Police and Osun state Police Commissioner to address the rising incident of kidnapping in the country or risk industrial action by lecturers.

ASUU said since the abduction of one of its members, Prof Yinka Adegbehingbe in Apomu axis of Osun state on Sunday, May 5 by Fulani herdsmen, workers, students and other members of the university community had been carrying out their duties in fear and anxiety.

Reading resolutions of the union after its Congress to newsmen on the campus of the university, ASUU, OAU branch chairman, Dr. Adeola Egbetokun, said during physical contact with the victim and his wife after the incident, the group confirmed that ransom was paid to Adegbehingbe’s abductors before his release.

He said though the branch could not on its own declare strike over the matter, Egbetokun, however, said if the insecurity is not urgently addressed, the national leadership of the union may be forced to embark on industrial action to compel government to act on the matter.

Egbetokun said, “ASUU OAU, while unanimously condemning the criminal act of kidnapping not only as a crime against humanity and the state, also observed that it is a barbaric act violating the Constitution, laws and customary decency of Nigeria.

“ASUU OAU also sorrowfully acknowledged the degrees of fear, trepidation and anxiety pervading the atmosphere under which academic staff, students and other members of the university community are now going about their duties at the Obafemi Awolowo University.

“This is an unwelcome development capable of lowering the morale of workers and destroying academic, teaching and research activities. 

ASUU OAU equally observed that though the crime of kidnapping is not new in Nigeria, its upsurge and gradual incursion into Osun State, which is often celebrated as of one the most peaceful states in Nigeria, are issues seen as worrisome, and of serious concern to the governor of the state as the Chief Security Officer, state Commissioner of Police, all security agencies, obas and traditional authorities, local government, state authorities and the people of the state.”

The Union also called on the Inspector General of Police and the Director of State Security Services to continue to do everything in their powers to expose the Fulani herdsmen and other criminals who masterminded the kidnapping of Adegbehingbe and perpetrators of crimes across the country.
