OAU: Senate Adjusts Examination TimeTable For Pre-NUGA Games

Following several rumours on the alleged postponement of examinations scheduled to hold between 4th to 7th April to the 10th to 13th April 2017, the University Senate has enacted this postponement.

The postponement which was officially approved on the Senate meeting held on Wednesday, 29th March 2017 would extend the examinations beyond its former ending date.

Several reactions have already started to trail the postponement as while some students gleefully accept the development, some others are not quite excited by it. Speaking to our correspondent, a student of the Faculty of Pharmacy who chose to remain anonymous stated, "...They should just allow us finish our exams and go, I don't think any student of Pharmacy is representing in the NUGA games so why delay us?"

Ogunjobi Abayomi Emerges As President NUNSA OAU

In what is described by many as an unusual kind of Election, Mr Ogunjobi 'Yomi has emerged as President of the Obafemi Awolowo University Chapter of the Nigerian Universities Nursing Students Association.

The Elections which had Mr Omolere 'Tobi, a 300L Level Student of the Department and Mr Ogunjobi Abayomi, a 400 Level Student of the Department has aspirants of the post of President ended with both aspirants each having 166 votes.

However, the tie was then broken by the Electoral Commission based on the power granted her members to vote in such scenarios. The Commission led by Miss Morolake Ayanlowo eventually voted 5 votes against 3 in favour of Mr Ogunjobi.

Mementoes: A Collection Of Poems On OAU To Be Unveiled This Saturday

Mementoes, an anthology of poems based on the Obafemi Awolowo University Community is set to be launched this Saturday, the 18th March, 2017 at Auditorium II, a lecture theatre based in the Humanities by 10.00am prompt.

This unique collection of poems was conceived by two time award winning poet and journalist, Olaoluwa Joseph, also known as Eminent, alongside other writers on OAU campus.

Mementoes is the third successor of poetic anthologies on OAU campus which was first birthed to life by antecedent works of “Sandstorms in June” and “Night Visions.”

Flavoured by 5 different poets in their uniquely differentiating styles, Mementoes has been able to cast a different lens of the spectrum on OAU in different ways.
The emblematic mementoes is a unique collage of Poetry, Photography and Art and it features celebrity artist, Pelumi Ponmile who painted the Mementoes back cover, Aniedi Utah, a seasoned writer and student of the Department of English, 400 level; Ojelabi Jesujoba, also known as Pope Jay, a writer and 300L Student of the Faculty of Pharmacy; Orode Elizabeth, a writer and also a 300 level student of the Department of Economics; and Adewunmi Mide Benedict, a graduate of the Literature in English, OAU.

The poems in the anthology number 50 in all as they touch on a wide array of issues that affect the average student of the OAU Community and it is a must possess by every conscious Great Ife Student. Some of the poems include a Dance of Shame, written against the unjust SMS Corporal punishment meted out to students caught in the act of theft; Anglomoz, a lover’s hide in OAU; Circumstances; The Water place inspired by another artwork drawn by Pelumi Ponmile; A is only for the gods; Learning and Culture alongside others.

For Olaoluwa Joseph, the Head-writer, He said: “Mementoes is for every student of OAU and it should be quickly grasped by all. It is insanely backed with lot of memories’ and as such, there is a poem directly relating to everyone.” 

Mathematics Department Provide Relief Package For Students As Exams Draw Closer

The Department of Mathematics of the Obafemi Awolowo University, more commonly referred to as Yellow house in description of her residential building, on Tuesday, 14th March 2017, set out to provide food stuff for her Students through the Students Association; National Association of Mathematics Science Students of Nigeria.

In what was described by many as a thoughtful initiative, the programme featured majorly a trade fair in which various raw food stuff were sold to Students of the Department at a 50% discount. Also from further interaction with the President of the Association, Mr AbdulKadri Agboola, known to many by the Pseudonym; Vision 2032, some food materials had been given to indigent Students who could not afford even the 50% cost free of charge. In his words, the President stated, "...The performance of Students during exam is always woeful because they don't feed well and thats why we have set out to help provide a cure to this... If one has eaten well, he is likely to perform better in exams"


Also, speaking with the Staff Adviser of the Association, Dr Fadodun, who was claimed to have greatly assisted in the facilitation of the scheme, he stated that the scheme was meant to assist students of the department in the examination period, especially those who could not particularly afford these foodstuff. He further divulged that most of the financial support for the project came from within the department; mostly staff and even the department itself.

From the expression of students observed at the fair, it was apparent as most of the students were pleased with the Project as a mere stroll through the corridors of the Yellow House on Tuesday 14th March exposed the delightful countenance of Students of the Department.

Chemical Engineering Students Hold Second Annual Lecture In Honour Of Professor Layokun

Second Ife Chemical Annual lecture in honour of Late Prof. SK Layokun at Ajose LT. organised by Nigeria Society of Chemical Engineers OAU students' chapter {NSChe OAU}


The program, which was held on Saturday, 10th March 2017 featured the presence of several eminent professors and lecturers as well as a representative of the Acting Vice Chancellor.

The speaker of the day, a Professor of Plant Breeding and Biotechnology, Prof. Benjamin Ewa Ubi, spoke on the potentials ofy Biotechnology in industrial development.
The learned professor took a long stretch in discussing the wrongs in the society that have been branded as right, thus, causing an increased rate of death and laying foundation for disease.

YHe continued by shedding light on those fuels that are favourable and those that are detrimental to our health, the fossil fuels that have negative effects and consequence on humans, affecting people in subtle ways. While analysing the importance of biofuel industry, he also stated that it is the only way to have sustainable energy in Nigeria.

Prof. Benjamin further stressed on the alarming rate of population increase at the expense of decrease in food production. He said, "by 2050, a 70% increase in food production is needed to solve the rampant famine. Fermented food which has greater impact and effect on humans are being left out, just as balance diet is equally being laid off out of human life."

He noted the unhygienic food that Nigerians eat and believe are nutritional which were detrimental to our health.

Noting Nigerian-made products, the department made a clear recognition of Godwin Oguta, an indigenous student of the department who majors in the production of hand washing and liquid soaps.

Prof. Ubi when answering questions on local food stated that the local foods were available, but people, out of civilization, had deviated from taking them and this shift to more 'modern' foods had caused untold risks such as reducing or impairing man's sight and other functional organs - risks that an adequate supply of some of these local foods like locust beans can help prevent.

The Ag. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Anthony Elujoba, was ably represented by Professor Fademileyin from Basic Medical Sciences who presented an award of meritorious service to awardees like Prof. B.O Solomon.

The wife of the late honoree, Mrs. Layokun, thanked the whole gathering in the name of the Layokun family. While making her speech, she acknowledged the love, passion and prowess her husband had for the department.

FASA Elections: A Case Of Incompetence, Fear, Or Agenda To Manipulate?

On the 13 of March 2017, news began to make rounds that ongoing elections into executive offices in the Faculty of Arts Student Association had been cancelled. Although there is yet to be another date, this will be the third time the election will be scheduled to hold and yet with no results. While the electoral commission is yet to give a cogent explanation at the time of compiling this report, there are certain issues this article seeks to examine.

To start with, frequent postponements, generally speaking, are an indication that the electoral commission had come upon challenges that could not be resolved at the moment – hence the postponement. If it had happened once, one could excuse it as normal occurrence. However, for such to occur thrice speaks loudly of how prepared the electoral body is.

There is no gainsaying that it reeks of unpreparedness and, if one may stretch it further, incompetence. It is disheartening that an election should take this long to conduct and conclude. One question that demands an answer is “Is the electoral commission willing and able to conduct a free and fair election?” to all appearances, the electoral body is not conscious of the sensitivity of the elections and the gravity of their constant vacillation (to put it mildly). In fact, in some quarters, there has to be an underlying influence around the elections.

This has led to suspicions in various quarters. Following disproportionate sizes in boxes between various aspirants on the ballot papers on Friday and the cancellation of the election on Monday, many are strongly of the opinion that the leadership of the electoral commission is inordinately biased to certain aspirants. As the story goes, a lot has been invested in a particular candidate from as far back as the beginning of the semester.

If the above is true, it will be that the electoral commission is only stalling until they can conduct an election in which the odds are in their best interests. This should not be so.

Furthermore, it is also alleged that there is an agenda to ‘clip’ the wings of a constituent department that is accused of always trying to be domineering over other departments in the faculty due to sheer number. This, as the story goes, is based on the fear that if the department in question were allowed to have its way, it would be a case of a faction ruling a majority.

To start with, the way to win elections, as far as free and fair elections are concerned, is by popular votes. If a candidate has the charisma and popularity to garner so much votes for himself, that should not be an impediment to conducting the elections. Rather, other candidates should see it as a challenge and try to rise up to the challenge through lawful means.

As regards fears that a certain department aspires to rule it all, it is obvious that those who express this fear are actually revealing what they would do in similar situations. This writer does not subscribe to one department fielding multiple candidates but if the law allows it, then the law must rule. The only way to prevent such is to put relevant legislation in place.

Furthermore, it is evident that aspirants have not been able to present a more unified appearance. If the base of each candidate’s success is on the strength of individual departments, then there will be problems of trust and cooperation regardless of who wins. This can only be solved if candidates and voters alike drop their departmental divides and see themselves as a whole.

This article will not end well if it does not hit on the indictment of the electoral body with emphasis on the electoral commissioner. It is disheartening that the commissioner will allow his personal integrity to be question thereby jeopardising the entire electoral process. From a lay’s man view, the electoral commissioner is gradually losing credibility with recent actions and inactions. As far as some people are concerned, that is enough reason to call for his resignation.

Faculty of Law, Arts To Hold Elections Today

Students of the Faculty of Law of the Obafemi Awolowo University, are set to hold their elections today, Monday 13th March 2016. This is coming after a severe campaigns on the social media from different quarters. The Students whom were known for their extravagance in campaigns in times past are alleged to have been compelled to step it down a notch consequential to a ban on the use of banners and posters in the Elections.
 
In a similar vein, the Faculty of Arts Students Association would also be going through the process of democratically selecting new leaders today after the postponement of her elections last week.

FASA Election To Hold Tomorrow, 13th March

The election that was slated to hold at the level of the Faculty of Arts Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife on the 10th of March was postponed after a few minutes of its commencement. This was due to the provision for 1 ballot box by the electoral commission for the whole of the department in the stead of 8 ballot boxes for each department in the faculty as recognised in its constitution. The names of candidates were misspelt and their pseudonyms were also not tagged alongside the ballot papers. There were also irregular sizes of boxes for voters to mark their choices on the provided ballot papers presented at the polling unit. Finally, there were no pictures of candidates on the ballot papers which would help identification when voters want to exercise their franchise.

An interview with one of the presidential candidates, Mr Afiz Gbadamosi on his reaction to the postponement of the election. He said
"Well I have no negative reaction to the postponement since it was done to ensure a credible election, just that I think the electoral commission should have perfected plans before the election day."
Miss Tofunmi, who is also vying for the post of the vice president of the faculty stated that it was the best decision to make.

The electoral commission has however promised to make necessary amendment as it has been rescheduled to 13th of March 2017.

Buhari Warns Nigerians Against Drug Self Administration

A medical expert, Professor Femi Williams, categorically said yesterday that President Muhammadu Buhari, was anaemic.

This, the certified physician in Anatomic Pathology from London and Ireland, told The Nation in an interview, could only have been responsible for the blood transfusion which the president got during his medical vacation in the United Kingdom.
Buhari admitted on his return home on Friday that he had transfusion in London.
“We now have a pretty good idea of diagnosis, which is now comprehensive or good enough to say that the diagnosis of President Buhari’s illness is anaemia,” Williams said.
“You cannot be transfused if you don’t have anaemia,” he explained.
He had, in a previous diagnosis based on the president’s photograph published in the newspapers, ruled out anaemia.
He also said that the anaemia could have been triggered by self –medication.

Buhari at a meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, members of the federal executive council and governors shortly on his arrival in Abuja spoke on self medication.
He called it “one of our terrible things.”
“We have to trust our doctors more and trust ourselves more because over there they only take drugs when it is absolutely necessary. They don’t just swallow everything,” he said.
In a separate analysis of the president’s health status yesterday, Professor Williams said it is imperative to know the possible causes of the anaemia.
He listed these as anaemia caused by self medication, anaemia associated with cancer or anaemia due to blood loss from self medication that “may affect the stomach and intestines as in aspirin toxicity.”
His words: “the negative clinical findings on the president that was published in The Nation on Feb 26, 2017 has been confirmed by the disclosure that the President was transfused with whole blood.
“In a previous photo of his hands prior to transfusion his nail beds were very pale indicative of clinical anaemia. The subsequent photograph of his hands that was analyzed showed that he was no longer clinically anaemic.
“The clinical history given by Mr. President that for the past 18 months he had been lethargic and feeling tired prior to his vacation is consistent with tiredness due to anaemia.
“Regaining his strength after transfusions that facilitated his return home suggests that the anaemia had been corrected successfully.
“There is therefore a preliminary diagnosis of anaemia meaning insufficient blood in the circulation.
“When this happens many organs including the brain, heart, liver, kidneys and lungs are starved of oxygen that is carried by blood to all parts of the body for efficient functioning of the person. “Sudden loss of blood as in road traffic accidents could be fatal. In this case the anaemia has been insidious and gradual over time.”
Continuing, Prof Williams said: “The question that arises in the absence of information, which is understandable, is the cause of the anaemia.
“The only information that can be gleaned from the Presidents history on arrival is his admonition against self medication. By so doing is he giving us some more relevant information that he had been told in London?
“This is the first time that a President advises that all citizens should trust their doctors and refrain from self medication. Is it possible that his anaemia is drug induced or drug related and that investigations in London revealed this? We do not know. If this is true common pain relieving drugs like Panadol may cause kidney damage and give rise to anaemia for which he received transfusions.
“Alternatively certain drugs also cause liver damage and anaemia but this is unlikely in his case since he was not jaundiced.”
But he also admitted that “there are so many other causes of anaemia that cannot be dealt with here.”
“Of relevance to our last observation is the possibility that this may be anaemia related to some type of cancer that must be ruled out. Looking at the photos on arrival there is one suspicious positive finding and that his loss of muscle mass on the face in the area of the zygomatic arch below the ears.
“This is either due to some cancer somewhere or due to aging.”
He said that the little snippets of information from the President’s history and disclosure on his health status may help millions of Nigerians damaging their vital organs from unbridled ingestion of over the counter (OTC) pain relieving and other drugs.”
He urged adequate publicity on the adverse effects of self medication and described the President’s view on the issue as a big public service to the health sector.
“Assuming this is the correct scenario the nation owes the president a debt of gratitude and if this is not correct the president has done a great service by highlighting the adverse events and dangers of self medication that is so rampant in the nation,” he said.

It is not surprising that end stage renal disease is relatively common in the country and these patients require dialysis.
But he also pointed out that the President has a constitutional right to privacy regarding his medical records and diagnosis of any ailment just like any other citizen in the world.

“Protection of privacy is an extremely important feature in a democracy,” he said, adding: “however we, the people, have elected the President and are paying his salary and upkeep.

“We are therefore entitled to be concerned and to know that he has a sound mind in a sound body to govern us appropriately and effectively.

“There is really no need for secrecy because we are all mortals destined for the departure lounge en route to the other side called Heaven.

“The unfortunate aspect of the Nigerian life and society is that any health challenge can be exploited for political reasons, and may be used and abused by aspirants to high office. This is an unhealthy trend that must be discouraged in our national polity.”
Buhari at a meeting with members of his cabinet and state governors shortly on his return home on Friday said he could not recollect being this ill in his 74 years on earth.

He had originally planned to be away for 18 days but ended up spending 36 days more, undergoing tests, receiving treatment and resting.

“I couldn’t recall being so sick since I was a young man, including the military with its ups and downs,” Buhari said.
He did not reveal the ailment he was treated for, but confirmed that he got blood transfusion during the vacation.
He hinted that he would be returning abroad in a few weeks for further medical attention.
“I couldn’t recall when last I had blood transfusion; I couldn’t recall honestly I can say in my 70 years. I couldn’t remember this drug that Nigerians take so much, very common.
“I think one of our terrible things is self drug administration. We have to trust our doctors more and trust ourselves more because over there they only take drugs when it is absolutely necessary. They don’t just swallow everything.”

Hausas Evacuate Sabo After Ile-Ife Communal Clash

Seventy-two hours after the communal clash in Ile -Ife, the last batch of Hausas residing in Sabo where the crisis took place have reportedly left the town.

This is in spite of the appeal from the Osun State Government and the Oni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

Traders in the area have also been counting their losses after the mayhem as commercial activities still remain grounded.

The relocation of the Hausas is as a result of the bloody clash which left seven persons dead with several others injured in the ancient city of the state in Southwest Nigeria.

Barely 24 hours after the incident, Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, imposed a two-day curfew in Ile Ife.

Spokesman for the Governor, Mr Semiu Okanlawon, said the decision was “compelled by the breach of the peace in the area which has led to avoidable destruction of lives and property”.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Aminu Koji, who confirmed the casualty figure to reporters, explained that the clash was caused by an altercation between a Yoruba woman and a Hausa man on Tuesday.

He said the situation was consequently brought under control on the directive of Oba Ogunwusi.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STUDENTS' OF ENGLISH AND LITERARY STUDIES
ELECTORAL COMMISSION

According to the Sacrosanct Constitution of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STUDENTS' OF ENGLISH AND LITERARY STUDIES, Section 44 subsection 10 and 11 which states that:
10. All votes shall be counted immediately after the election and the result shall be announced thereafter...

Having conducted a free and fair election on the 9th of March, 2017 which started at exactly 10:00 am and ended at exactly 4.00pm of the same day, counting of the ballot papers started at 5pm, after an hour recess and ended at exactly 3:20am the following morning; the result was immediately pasted on the departmental notice board for all to see.

Owing to our Sacrosanct constitution, section 44 subsection 11, which states that:
11.The electoral commission, subject to sub-section (x) of this section, shall announce the election results, which after twenty-four hours; no formal protest shall uphold the results, declare both winners and losers and paste such on the Departmental notice board.

Kelvin Triumphs At Polls Following Intense Politicking In NASS

The students of the Faculty of Science, under the body of the Nigerian Association of Science Students (NASS), elected new leaders for the 2016/2017 session on Thursday, 9th March 2017.

Following several weeks of intense politicking, Mr Okoli Victor, popularly known as Kelvin, won the Presidential seat with 612 votes, emerging as winner with a margin of 69 votes between him and his contender, Mr Agbaje Sylvester, who garnered 543 votes.

The Vice President elect, Obisesan Oluwatosin, contested and won unopposed. The story is the same for the offices of the General Secretary, Treasurer, P.R.O and Director of Socials which were won by Erhonwo Godspower, Erogbon Anuoluwapo, Obi Samuel Michael and Ogunleye Damilola respectively.

Odemuyiwa Suliyat, who contested for the post of Assistant General Secretary, had 583 votes while her opponent, Akintayo Olanrewaju, had 558 votes, thereby winning by an interesting margin of 25 votes. Also, in the contest for the office of financial secretary, Owojori Emmanuel won by 640 votes leaving his other aspirant, Olagoke Oladayo with 491 votes.

Another interestingly contested office was that involving the Director of Socials elect, Oyafemi Olajide who had 606 votes and as against his opponent, Adedeji Israel, who had 505 votes, leaving a 101 vote count difference.

At the end of the process, the total number of valid votes were 1,225.

AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY AT THE INAUGURATION/SWEARING-IN-CEREMONY OF THE ELECTED STUDENTS’
UNION OFFICERS ON THE 6TH OF MARCH, 2016 AT ODUDUWA HALL, OAU, ILE-IFE, OSUN STATE, NIGERIA.

The Visitor, the Chancellor, the Pro-Chancellor, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, all principal officers, distinguished
guests, alumni associations, staff unions, members of staff, and members of the press, all pressure groups, comrades, colleagues, security officers, students and all other protocols duly observed.
I am here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust put on me and careful of our true values
as a union. Allow me begin by being grateful to Almighty God who has made us all gather here today peacefully to witness this great occasion which marks another watershed in the history of our union.
Each time we gather to inaugurate a President, we bear witness to the enduring strength of our Constitution
and we reaffirm the promise of our union. What brings us together as a union is not from the faculty we belong nor the department we come from but from the enduring spirit of achieving a common goal as intellectual fighters for emancipation. What makes us unique, what makes us intellectuals, what makes us
Great Ife is not in our numbers when we gather, rather, it is our allegiance to an idea of equality, an idea to intellectually fight for emancipation and an idea to always stand for what is right. Today, we move on towards ensuring that these ideas live on to future generations. Today, we affirm our unity, our strength and our intellectuality as a union.
In reaffirming the greatness of our union, we understand that greatness is never given, it is earned. Our history has never been one of settling-for-less, it has not been a journey for the weak. But it has been a story of the courageous, book of the bright, thoughts of the thinkers and insight of intellectuals. This is the journey we continue today as a union. What cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them, that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our union is too big or too small, but whether it works for us and serves us, whether it protects us, whether it assures us of the promises it holds. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, we find a solution – which has made us come together today. And those of us at the realm of affairs of our union will be held to account – to spend wisely, reform bad habits and do our duty in the light of the day – because only then can we restore the vital trust in our union.
Today’s inauguration is very special as we are not merely having new leaders but we are transferring authority form the Students’ Union Building and giving it back to the students. Over time, as a union, our strength has been limited in the Students’ Union Building because some selected few whose studentship cannot be ascertained have always seen themselves as cabals who can make decisions for us. But today, 6th of March, 2017 will be remembered as the day the students became the owners of their union again.
The hallmark of our campaign was “Rebranding the Students’ Union” and this shall remain the guiding principle of our administration. This administration’s rebranding agenda will focus on ensuring a stable academic calendar in a conducive environment by being proactive, working towards an improved academic; welfare of students, construction of students’ union hostel, establishment of students’ union health committee to improve health delivery, improving the transportation system on campus by incorporating campus shuttle into the university, being diplomatic about INTECU such that each student is allocated a specified amount of megabyte daily for academic purpose and ensuring the feasibility of work and study for students. The blueprint to achieve all these has been given in the manifesto. To bring about the expected result, we will work with the management and not for the management.

ON ACADEMIC CONDITION AND GENERAL WELFARE.
It is so sad and disheartening that in the latest World University Rankings 2017 by Times Higher Education, no Nigerian university is among the first 100. This is evident of the fact that our universities are not well funded by the government and the little fund given to the universities is being mis-managed by university authorities through corruption and misplaced priorities. Our lecture theatres are not sufficient such that lecturers now fight on who to use a lecture theatre and students now run like antelopes due to unnecessary change in venue because of inadequate lecture theatres.
The few lecture theatres we have lack Public Address System, projectors, good seats and adequate ventilation system. Students are now faced with the hardship of always contributing money in this period of economic recession to buy Public Address System and projectors because of the failures and laxities of the system we find ourselves. Students now stand in lecture theatres for lectures because of bad seats in lecture
theatres.
Laboratories are not well equipped, students now cram practical because they cannot perform it not because they do not have the intellectual ability to perform it but because the laboratories are not equipped with necessary apparatus and reagents, yet we say we are great. Our laboratories have now turned to museum whereby the only things you see there are old and non-functioning equipment of the last generation. Now we are now turning to the sad state of ‘’Alternative to Practical’’. An end must come to this insanity. Mass failure remains unabated, continuous assessment tests have been turned to examinations and wickedly made impromptu, lecturers now harass female students sexually, among other frustrating gestures.
Admission racketeering gradually is becoming the order of the day. Admission is now being determined by
‘’who you know’’. Majority of diploma students hardly get admitted, yet they pay heavily. Light remains epileptic despite over N40 Million reportedly spent on electrical bills monthly. Water is not regular, while the
elementary theory that water is colourless has been rendered useless. Roads are badly lit as such, the security of lives and property is hardly guaranteed in the night.
It is unfortunate that students now live like animals in halls of residence. A room of 8 is now a room of 18 yet the management keeps on increasing the number of students they admit without being mindful of where they will accommodate them. The saying that freshmen and finalists will always get bed spaces is now abolished such that students now sleep in lecture theatres, common rooms, TV rooms, butteries and corridors – posing a threat to the security, health status and academic performance of students.
Obafemi Awolowo University cannot continue this way. This worm that has eaten deep into the fabric of this
system must be removed and these anomalies be fixed to maintain the greatness of our university. We; hereby demand that the university management should embark on capital projects such as construction of more and modern lecture theatres, construction of new hostels to decongest the crowdedness in our hostels,
improving on the supply of electricity on campus, provision of street lights on all roads on campus, expansion of the university dam and digging of boreholes in all halls of residence for adequate and efficient supply of colourless, tasteless and odourless water.
We demand that the university management look deeply into cases of mass failure because it has always
been an act of victimization by some lecturers. We demand that the university management set up a well known disciplinary panel so that lecturers that harass female students can be reported and properly disciplined. We charge the department of works and maintenance to be proactive in their dealings with the supply of light and water for students’ use. As a union, we are ready to work with them.

INTERNAL TRANSPORTATION.
It is unfortunate that this great university of ours does not have her own transportation system. We have allowed ourselves to be at the mercy of these drivers. These drivers now determine when we move, how we move, where we move to and why we move. As a union, we have dialogued with them, no result. As a union, we have confronted them, no result. And now, we have come to the conclusion that these drivers are running a system of monopoly, and to break monopoly we need competition and effective regulation. The current
Students’ Union administration is ready to give them that competition and effective regulation they need.
The hardship students experience during rush hours on mobility to class during the day and back to their hostels at night can no longer be tolerated. This current Students’ Union administration has the quest to fix the foregoing. We demand that the management release all our Students’ Union buses in their possession to
us because it belongs to the students and not to the management. It is high time we stopped management from controlling and determining our limits under the disguise of ‘’proper management of buses’’. We are not saying that the university management should not provide such competition by starting their own
internal transportation system, but what we are saying is that we cannot leave it alone in their hands, the Students’ Union need to have her own internal transportation system because this current hardship affects us – the students and that is why we demand that all our Students Union buses be handed over to us totally
with no string attached.
We also request that alumni, Federal Government, State Government and notable personalities who have the means should graciously help these projects.

INDEPENDENCE OF OUR UNION.
The highest form of independence is financial independence. Over time, the management have always put
the Students’ Union under control and regulation by being in charge of our union dues. Prior to 2008, the Students’ Union used to collect her dues. It was in 2008 that the union wrote to the university management to help in collecting union dues from students so that all students will always pay. But the management has used this avenue against us over time. It is so sad that as a union we beg before our dues are released to us, and when the dues are released, they are released in accordance to the wish of the management such that whenever we are not on the same page with them, they frustrate us by not releasing our dues. This is a slap to us as a union when we have to beg before we get our rights.
For the period the union was suspended, students have continued to pay their union dues since such is part of their school fees. This fund running into millions has not been remitted to the union account; we demand that the fund with its accumulated interests be remitted immediately for we have projects such as internal transportation system, self-help accommodation projects to use the fund for.
For total independence of our union, we demand that all union dues should be remitted immediately into the union account after the collection of school fees from the students. And if this is not followed from now, the union is ready to stop the management from collecting our dues for us because we do not recognize the essence of management collecting our dues for us if they cannot remit it to the union account fully.
Anytime the Students’ Union is not on the same page with the management and we resort to protest and confrontation, the next thing management do is to proscribe our union or suspend our union unjustly. Let it be made clear that the Vice-chancellor is a member of ASUU, the Registrar is a member of NASU and the President of the Students’ Union is a member of the Students’ Union such that ASUU is not superior to NASU, NASU is not superior to ASUU, ASUU is not superior to Students’ Union, Students’ Union is not superior to NASU. None is superior to another. We are all sister unions and we are all answerable to the management.
Why is it that out of these unions, the one the management victimize always is the Students’ Union? Today, as a union we stand against victimization in any form. This union has come to stay and it will be forever as measures will be put in place by this current administration of Students’ Union to prevent the management from victimizing the Students’ Union and the students.
The Students’ Union Building belongs to students. We hereby demand that the university management stop
collecting any form of rent from those using our property for business activities. It is time the students took
total control of the Students’ Union Building.

THE UNIVERSITY HEALTH CENTRE.
The University Health Centre has not been serving students effectively in terms of health delivery. The crowdedness and long queues in the Health Centre is not encouraging. Most times, students are being misdiagnosed, sometimes students are not been attended to early and sometimes drugs are not available for students. As a union, we cannot allow this to continue.
We demand that the university management increase the number of staff at the university health centre and the pharmacy section should be well supplied with drugs so that health delivery will be effective. We also demand that staff of the university health centre should treat students with utmost care as we will not tolerate any form of laxity in the system.
As union, we shall establish the Students’ Union Health Committee that will be saddled with the responsibility
of monitoring the activities of the university health centre and getting complaints from students as regards the university health centre.

SECURITY.
The Great Ife Students’ Union has been known to always take a full stand against cultism, rape, physical assault and threat. This current administration of the Students’ Union will continue on that full stand against
these social vices.

We sound a great warning to all students who belong to any cult group to renounce their membership now and to those who plan to involve themselves in the act of rape, we say to you today to have a change of mind as this administration is battle-ready to wage full war against you.
To those who have taken physical assault and bullying as their hobby, we say to you today to stop it. And if you do not listen now and you continue in the act, this current students’ union administration will fight you, discipline you and return you back to your Great Ife Senses.

To students that drink and smoke in the academics area and halls of residence, we sound a great warning to you against such act. Anyone that wants to smoke and drink should go to the designated places for such.

To those that over-speed on all our campus roads, enough is enough. We are tired of your insanity. We are tired of your madness. No one is allowed to go beyond the speed limit on our campus roads, anyone caught
in the act of over-speeding will seriously pay for it. Because it is time the union took a full stand against over-speeding. We demand that the university management make speed breakers (bumps) available on all campus roads to reduce the rate of over-speeding on our roads.

I implore all students to be security conscious and always be at alert because our security lies in our hands.
Let us not play with it. Always report any strange face you see around on campus or any strange gathering in
strange places to the Students’ Union Security Committee and University Security.
To the management, we demand that the security network on our campus be improved and made less
porous. We charge members of the university security committee to be more proactive than ever and also
work effectively with members of the Students’ Union Security Committee. We also demand that members of
the university security committee should not harass students nor assault them as being reported in the past.
That era is gone.

INVOLVEMENT OF LEGITIMATE STUDENTS IN POLICY MAKING AND DECISION TAKING.
We strongly submit that legitimate students who are elected by students be involved in all decision and
policy making committees in the university. Decisions on campus, especially those relating to students should be made after consulting with elected student representatives. We demand our right of membership in university committees�

STUDENT-STAFF RELATIONSHIP.
Many students have continued to complain about how staff in various offices in the university treat them
with disrespect. We plead that all staff in all these offices have a good and friendly mind towards students or
else we will demand their removal. We respect you, we therefore demand respect in return.

TO ALL CORPORATE BODIES ON OUR CAMPUS.
All corporate bodies on campus (banks and telecommunication companies) should be ready to return to this
community what they have been getting from this community since they have been around here. We are not
going to listen to complaints of the current economic recession as an excuse for them to run away from their
corporate social responsibility because they did not just start here during this period, they have been around
here for more than 15 years and have done nothing for the student community. Now is the time they will
return back to this community.

OPEN MESSAGE TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
We demand that the Federal Government adequately fund education and direct the university management
to generate funds in an innovative manner without adding to the economic hardship of the poor parents
through request for tuition fee, or what our management calls charges. We demand that the Federal
Government openly come out and stand against any form of fee increment which is common to university
authorities in the country.
We demand that the Federal Government diversify the economy and make the nation depend less on crude
oil. The current economic state of the country is unbearable and lamentable. Our parents are being owed
salaries and this is affecting our academic performance on campus.
The rate of unemployment in the country is alarming. We demand that the Federal Government declare
unemployment a case of emergency that needs urgent solution so that youths will be gainfully employed.

DEMOCRACY AND INSECURITY IN THE WORLD.
We congratulate the Gambians on their new elections. We commend ECOWAS for ensuring that a new
Gambian President, Adama Barrow was brought into power peacefully even when the former president,
Yahya Jammeh decided to go against the election result.
We also congratulate Americans on their peaceful transition of power early this year. We implore the new
President, Donald Trump to work more on fostering unity in USA and with other countries, and review some
of his campaign statements which appeared divisional.
The war in Syria has gone on for over five years and has claimed the lives of more than a quarter of a million
people. The trouble began in 2011 in Deraa when after a peaceful protest by people, the government
responded angrily, and the army opened fire on protesters. The current war in Syria is being fought between
Soldiers who support the President of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, and a group of fighters known as rebels, who donot want him to be in power anymore. We call on powerful nations like US, Russia, Britain and France to work �out peace in Syria and we also demand that Federal Government of Nigeria should work with other World
Governments to ensuring peace in Syria.

CONCLUSION
Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon
which our success as a union depends – equality, honesty, courage, hard work, loyalty, patriotism and
intellectuality – these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress
throughout our history as a union. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us
now is a new era of responsibility – a recognition, on the part of every Great Ife Students, that we have duties
to ourselves, our union and our university – duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly,
firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving
our all to a difficult task. This is the price and promise of our studentship and membership. This is the source
of our confidence. The source of our strength. The source of our greatness. This is the meaning of our liberty.
So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled as a union. Let it be
said by future generations that when we were tested, we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn
back nor did we falter; and with our eyes fixed on the horizon and God’s grace upon us, we carried forth that
great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.
Greatest Ife! Articulate Ife!! You have given me this mandate to serve you for the next academic session. As
ever, I promise to always protect your interest and I will never disappoint you nor let you down. Greatest Ife!
Articulate Ife!! Let me use this medium to inform you that all existing standing committees stand dissolved, a
substantial security committee has been formed and will assume work with immediate effect. All union
documents should be handed over to the Secretary General of the union, Mr. Boluwajaiye Adeoluwa.

In conclusion, I appreciate all university officials, all CEC members, leadership and members of the SRC,
members of the HEC, leadership of all faculties, departments, religious groups and other associations, the
entire Great Ife Students, my lecturers within and outside the College of Health Sciences, my parents, friends,
critics and everyone present here to witness this great occasion.
Thank you for your rapt attention thus far. I wish you all journey mercies back to your various destinations.

Faculty of Law Holds Lecture In Honour Of Dean, Hosts Atiku Abubakar.

In honor of the Dean, faculty of Law, Prof. Ademola Popoola, the maiden edition of the annual dean's lecture was used to launch the annual law week of the Law Students Society, with the theme -“Exploring the constitutional framework for restructuring Nigeria for sustained economic growth and National Unity.”

     This annual public lecture was graced by the presence of prestigious personalities in Nigeria. Among which are the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Anthony Elujoba, Emeritus Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, Dean of Student Affairs and a former vice president of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar GCON among others.

     The event was opened with the recitation of the national anthem and school anthem. This was followed by the recognition and introduction of guests. The Vice Chancellor of OAU, Prof. Anthony Elujoba gave the opening remark by welcoming everyone and commended the guest of honor for his graceful presence and he also spoke about the great future of OAU. After this was taking of the citation of the Honouree, Prof. Ademola Popoola and former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar (GCON).

Afterwards, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the guest speaker of the event, began his presentation. He spoke on the simple topic, "Restructuring Nigeria's federation". He began with stating the myths surrounding the call for a restructuring.  According to him, one of such myths was the fact that 'true federalism' is a myth as all federal systems are works-in-progress and vary from one according to their specific history, socioeconomic and political conditions. He also stated that the current constitution concentrates too much power and resources at the center which has impeded national development, security, peace and stability.

     He went on to give reasons why a restructure was necessary, mentioning that the federation should be restructured because it makes the country economically unproductive, indolent, unstable, disunited and politically weak. He regarded the present federation as that of a "unitary federalism". He concluded by mentioning the situation that led to the country's present stage i.e. their over-dependence on oil as a source of revenue and he listed panaceas for a better Nigerian federation.
  
  After he delivered his speech, there was a brief question and answer session that was followed by presentation of awards to honorable and deserving persons - Prof. Sola Eyinderun, Prof. Ademola Popoola, Prof. Anthony Elujoba and His Excellency, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Portrait drawings of Prof. Ademola Popoola and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar were presented to them as gifts from the Law Students’ society.
  
  The Faculty of Law Journal was launched and the Guest of Honour launched it with five million naira in cash and this marked the end of the event, this was after an earlier donation of a 25-seater bus to the Faculty.

Dòbálè: The Thing About Lying Lizards- Pope Jay

In my school, there is a funny tradition, I do not know how and when it started but I can assure you that it has been around for a while. Before you can successfully address a crowd, you must prostrate before the crowd. The nomenclature of the unusual tradition is unsurprisingly the Yoruba translation of the act; “Dòbálè”. This tradition is so entrenched in the Obafemi Awolowo University that as a performing artiste or Public speaker, your chances of succeeding with the audience drops exponentially if you do not perform this act before a Great Ife Students gathering and in contrast, performing this act can greatly improve the your chances of winning the audience when rightly done.

You might probably think that there are some people that are exempted from our funny tradition and indeed, this is the truth. Certain people, especially in the higher political class, who have managed to gain some “mouth” for themselves can be exempted from this tradition. However, most of the other classes are not. Star musicians who have come to perform on the soil of the Obafemi Awolowo University have willingly undergone the sacred tradition and have of course enjoyed the benefits thereof. Burnaboy, Sean Tizzle, Orezi, Olamide… are some names that come to mind in recent times.

The irony that often arises in the practice of this tradition can be quite comical. The ‘Ìdòbálè” is a way by which the Yoruba show respect; especially from the younger to the elderly. And as much I am uncertain of the circumstances of the creation of the tradition, I want to believe that it was about wanting to show the audience some reverence, and what better way is there to do this than in the most cultural way possible. But then again, persons who try to use the “Dòbálè” are not always the most morally justified; a fact acknowledged in the proverb; “The Ìdòbálè is not a measure of character”. This explains why a musician, drunk to stupor, would come to tender his idobale before performing or why men in starched shirts who have come to make vague promises would annoyingly spend half the time being a “well-trained Yoruba boy”.

But then again, all lizards are lying, we just don't know which ones are actually lying...

LSS Hosts Atiku Abubakar, To Host More Dignitaries Tomorrow

Sequel to today's visit by His Excellency, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, the LSS is set to host other dignitaries in celebration of their annual Law week.

The passage of the National Biosafety Agency Bill into law in 2005 by the Goodluck Jonathan administration had paved another way for diversification in the legal field. The Biosafety law Act is a domestication of the cartagena protocol (2003) which Nigeria is a signatory.The Biosafety Act has been fashioned to provide the legal framework to check the activities of modern biotechnology in the Nigeria, as well as the importation of genetically modified (GM) crops in Nigeria, including the provision of an avenue to engage Nigerian scientists/experts from different fields to identify and pursue solutions to  local challenges.

Globally, it has long been recognised that bioterrorism and accidental or uncontrolled release of harmful chemicals or genetically modified organisms into the environment are critical issues. Consequently, Nigeria has also deemed it appropriate to finally put in place regulatory framework.

On this note, the Law Students Society is inviting the general public to her; "NATIONAL BIOSAFETY LAW ROUNDTABLE"

The event is scheduled to hold at the New Mock and Moot Court of the Faculty of Law tomorrow, Tuesday, 7th March 2017.

ACJ OAU New Leaders Sworn In

The Newly elected leadership of the Association of Campus Journalists, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife officially received the mantle in the evening of Saturday, 4th March 2017 at the Pit Theatre.
The outgone Chairman Guild of Editors, Adeyeye Ifeoluwa, in his charge encouraged the new executives to remain United at all times as challenges would come.
The immediate past President in his handing over speech also appreciated the Association and her members for the support given him throughout the tenure and he further challenged the incoming administration to do more.

The Electoral Commission led by Mr Lukmon Fasasi then administered the oath of office to the new executives and the new President, Mr Okeowo Olasunkanmi then gave his address, claiming that the occasion for him was a fulfilled dream and he was going to do what he could to elevate the Association in his tenure.

There is a time to everything , a time to start and a time to end , a time to be sworn-in and a time to handover .

I started as the chairman Guild of Editors and have handed as the President of ACJOAU, it has been the toughest 1year of my career and it has been that with lots of lessons , it has come with successes and disappointments but above all it has come with lessons meant for a lifetime.


It is with sincere Joy that I write this having spent the last few months as the President of Association of Campus Journalists,OAU. No doubt, when we came in, alot of expectations were awaiting and we had to build  on the already laid down foundation by Mr Benjamin Adebayo led administration.
In the last few months, we have faced several challenges, sometimes we almost give up but we have surmounted them all with your support and our collectivism as one big family.

Since we came in till now we have had some successes,some of which I would list below
.
👉� We spearheaded a Social Media Campaign called #ReopenOAU, to demand for the reopening of Obafemi Awolowo University, the campaign went as far as drawing attentions of personalities from out of the country and is the biggest successful social media protest in Nigerian Universities

👉�We were also able to renovate the Association Secretariat upon coming in

👉�We have been able to ensure more participation of the Association at the National level in Campus Journalism and also have been able to forge unity with top institutions in Nigeria.

👉�We were able to Launch the 1st correspondents' chapel on any Nigerian Campus (ACJOAU Correspondents Chapel)

👉�We were also able to float an E-Library for easy access of books

👉�We also were able to hold the Great Ife Students Summit which saw in Presence Mr Edmond Obilo

👉�We were able to hold an induction ceremony as stipulated by the Constitution

👉�We were able rebrand the Association with more social media presence on Facebook,Twitter ,Instagram and even WhatsApp

👉�We were able to give the Students Union Elections the biggest coverage any Union Election can get with massive social media presence

👉�We were able to organize the biggest ever and most coordinated Debate in the OAU Students Union Elections

👉�We were able to build a relationship with Nigerian Union of Journalists and Nigerian Guild of Editor's

👉�We were able to host the International Campus Journalism Conference that had a massive success of persons from wide and near with a success of over 8schools physically Present


👉�We were able to train over 20 Journalists to become Certified in Conflict Reporting and Public Relations,hereby becoming the first varsity to have her members trained in the act .

👉�We were able to ensure a brand new Amended Constitution before leaving the Association.


We have more successes to paint but the biggest success is leaving a mark in your mind.

I must say that whatever success we have achieved during the just concluded tenure was due to your support and believe in the Administration, we did not achieve anything alone but achieved little that we did due to the unity of purpose of all News Agencies and Journalists on Campus.

Let me state that the Association is bigger than a single man and the Association survives on our oneness and unity by the pen, we had shortcomings but we hope the new tenure will learn from our own mistakes and won't make same mistakes we made.

Let me charge all News Agencies to keep supporting the Association, as the ACJOAU isn't the Secretariat but rather people that make it up , I also admonish all members to continue to offer support to the New Executives.
I look forward to an ACJOAU where we would continue on the National Pedestal, an ACJOAU that would rule the world in Journalism , an ACJOAU that would surmount all Challenges, an ACJOAU that would be known the More for integrity and progress.
My charge to the New President is that he must make ACJOAU the hallmark of integrity it is known for, the Association must not be taken over by politicians, we must continue to retain our values.

I want to sincerely thank all Institutions around Nigeria that I enjoyed their support and advice, I cannot thank you enough for always been there, from University of Ibadan,UCJ,  LAUTECH, UNILAG, UNILORIN and all Institutions that supported my tenure .

I have lots to write but sometimes words may not be fully written but rather they will be written in hearts of men.

My special thanks to my Executive council , I must appreciate my team, we had our fair share of challenges but we remained strong, thank you family from Akinremi Rebecca, to Adebayo Faith to Adeyeye Ifeoluwa, Fadipe Olamide,Areo Fikayo, Kayode Emmanuel, Abegunde Cephas, Okeowo Olasunkanmi and Mr Abubakar Seun. I will continue to remember you all day and all time long.

My special thanks to Lukmon Fasasi led Electoral commission for holding an Election despite the issues that almost hindered it , posterity will never forget the issues and the players of them.

To all my critics,thank you, you made me better, even though sometimes I have been at the centre of wrong accusations ,they are sacrifices I have paid during my tenure, I however believe there is a place for reward for all our acts either good or bad and nemesis will definitely catch up.

I am handing over today and will say that , we have not been perfect but rather we have strived, i would correct some mistakes if hands of clock Can be drawn back but I leave the continuation of ACJOAU to the new Exco.

ACJ Hosts Fisayo Soyombo, Others At ICJC 2017

The Association of Campus Journalists, Obafemi Awolowo University, held her annual International Campus Journalism Conference on Saturday, 4th March 2016.

The event had in attendance, several schools several other students from other schools and other distinguished personalities. Delivering his Keynote address on the theme of the event, the award winning journalist, Mr Fisayo Soyombo, enlightened the audience on the latest developments in the world of journalism and why journalists needed to keep up as they would always be needed in the society.

Mr Dapo Oladipo, publisher of the Eagle Online, whilst commenting on the topic, also encouraged the students to be careful with the things they did with the social media, stating that there were a number of opportunities untapped by young journalists from the new media. He also spoke on the need to get facts right before any publication as news stories often went a long way.

The programme also featured a presentation from Mr Ogunjobi, a representative of the African Students for Liberty and he spoke on the need for Students to engage in volunteerism.

OAU Peeps News Agency Bags Best News Agency Award At ACJ Awards Night

OAU Peeps News Agency bagged on Saturday 4th March, the Best News Agency at the Dinner and Awards Night of the Association of Campus Journalists.

This was after some of her members had also clinched some awards in some other categories.
