With the rising rate of blackouts and incessant power failure, it is hard for one not to comment on this issue. One phrase any child truly Nigerian can not but say in the process of growing up is “Up NEPA”. As a matter of fact, it is a trademark of anybody truly Nigerian. NEPA stands for National Electric Power Authority and the phrase is used usually to express the joy that accompanies the restoration of power supply or as we often like to wrongly put it, “the bringing of light”. Anyone who has lived in this country would agree that the power supply in the Nigerian nation is nothing to be proud of and many individuals and organizations have commented and made several recommendations as regards how the deteriorating state of the power situation can be confronted but then again, talk is cheap.
Statistics have shown that Nigeria produces far below her consumption demand for electricity. According to Babatunde Raji Fashola led Ministry of Power, we produce about 2,464 Megawatts of power and at present we have a purported demand of about 12,800 Megawatts. Apparently, we are nowhere close to enjoying long term uninterrupted power supply anytime soon. Personally I think there are only two ways out this: We must try to reduce demand and at the same time consider other alternative sources of power. At present, Nigeria generates power majorly from Hydroelectric and some thermal and fossil fule power plants but it would be nothing but self deceit to slight the fact that Gasoline generators also take a huge chunk when accounting for power production in the country. In fact, there are notions that the not-so-serious attitude of the government to the improvement of power supply in the country is due to the strong politicking from stakeholders in the "Generator and Petrol" industry.
And there is also the Solar energy alternative which is rapidly gaining ground, however this option remains relatively expensive and in seasons like this when the sun doesn't shine so brightly, it may not be as reliable. So even with all these alternatives gaining ground, we may still have to shout Up NEPA a little longer...

Man O' War Club Member Beats Student, Club Bags Suspension
Following the drama that ensued on Wednesday, 17th August 2016 at the Fajuyi Hall of the Obafemi Awolowo University, where acting executives of the Hall were allegedly assaulted by a member of the Man O' War club of the institution, the executives of the hall have come out with a statement claiming that the club has been suspended indefinitely by the University Authorities.
The scuffle was said to have resulted from an attempt of the executives to help recover a soccer ball that was mistakenly kicked into the fenced training ground of the club behind the Hall of Residence. The intervention however was said to have gone violent when a member of the Club attacked the Chairman of the Hall. The incident, which lasted for several minutes, also led to some students demanding that cancellation of the club, citing the recent unruly behaviour of some members of the club as reasons.
However, considering the alleged claim that the Man O' War Club of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife which has produced many distinguished personalities over the years has been placed on a suspension, several individuals and bodies have continued to condemn the act of the members of the club involved in the incident.
NYSC 2016 Batch B Mobilization: OAU Graduating Students Required To Validate JAMB Reg. No
Graduating students of Obafemi Awolowo University – those that completed their studies during the 2014/2015 session are required to validate their JAMB registration number.
According to our impeccable sources at the Division of Student Affairs (DSA), those that were admitted through the Predegree programme or Direct Entry are required to put down their details at the DSA office. The details collected from those affected include their name, JAMB registration number, Date of Birth and Matric number.
The facility to validate the JAMB registration number was said to be available on JAMB website, but a check by OAU Peeps News Agency correspondents shows that it is defunct. None of the affected students have been able to do the validation themselves. As at Wednesday, August 17, many of the graduating students were at the DSA office for the purpose and those that are far away from Ife were able to still put down their details by proxy.
On whether or not those that finished last session will be mobilized in the Batch B likely for this November; there are strong indications that some graduating students will be mobilized as our source confirmed that the Division is already on the list submitted by departments that are ready.
As of now, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is yet to release an official time-table for the 2016 Batch B Youth Service.
