OAU Set To Host Hult Prize

OAU set to Host Hult Prize
: The World’s Largest Student Competition for Social Enterprise.

On December 1, 2018, Obafemi Awolowo University will play host the world’s largest students’ competition- Hult Prize.

STUDENTS at Obafemi Awolowo University are gearing up to make it to the finals of the Hult Prize – one of the top 5 ideas in the world featured in Times Magazine and dubbed the Nobel Prize for Students.

With over 100,000 undergraduates and postgraduates from 150+ countries involved, the Hult Prize in partnership with the United Nations, the Clinton Global Initiative and the Hult International Business school is the world’s largest startup accelerator for the launch of for-good and for-profit business ideas emerging from universities around the world through pitching of business ideas. Starting with  each campuses hosting their respective Oncampus events.

The winner of the intra-campus event will automatically advance to compete in one of the 25 regional finals happening around the world. The goal is to reach the accelerator in New York where there is funding and mentorship throughout. Thereafter, 6 teams will finally be selected to pitch at the United Nations where the winning team gets $1 million dollars in seed funding capital.

The theme for the competition announced by Ex-President Bill Clinton on September 15, 2018 is “Youth Unemployment- Develop an idea to provide meaningful jobs for 10,000 young people by 2025”. The competition is opened to BSc, MSc and PhD students. Students from OAU are expected to form teams of 3-4 students each and to come up with their business ideas to pitch to top judges on the event day.

Johnson Ishola, the Campus Director who will be leading the Hult Prize at Obafemi Awolowo University On campus programme, was quoted in the statement as saying that he is “confident Obafemi Awolowo University can produce the next generation of business leaders who will drive the country’s economy.” He encouraged individuals to be part of the On Campus event as the aim of the Hult Prize isn’t only to get the best business ideas from students but also to instill an entrepreneurial/start-up culture across students, inspiring them to believe that by setting up businesses, they can solve some of Nigeria’s and world’s most pressing challenges.  He also stressed that the University can represent Nigeria at the Global and National stage, coming out victorious.

“The future of our economy depends on a new wave of entrepreneurs coming up with ideas, resolving to make them a reality and having a mission to create wealth and jobs. The theme for the competition is arguably the most pressing challenge we have in Nigeria and if we can solve this, a lot more other problems will be solved too” Johnson told.

Speaking on achievements made in the previous year, Johnson said, “In 2017/2018, our On campus winning team – Team Utility – developed a system that traps off solar radiation to purify and generate electricity simultaneously. They got an automatic entry to one of the regional finals. ”

This academic year 2018/19, the Hult Prize at OAU event is looking for the top 3 ideas or teams to award from the intra-campus event whilst the brightest team will automatically advance to compete in one of the 25 regionals happening around the world.

With over 10 rock star judges on the panel, 3 milestone breaking speakers on the pre-event workshops/sessions, volunteers and strategic partners, we will be leading a new wave of entrepreneurs to change the world.

Johnson finally ended saying that “the coming of the Hult Prize to Nigeria is really timely and that the government, school authorities and Business or Innovation hubs such as Co-creation hub, Civic Innovation Lab, Techpointafrica, African Youth Entrepreneurs, should support the event in every way they can so that students will be able to come up with better prototypes when up against students from other countries and to have better solutions implemented in Nigeria.

How They Toyed With Her Precious Life: An Account of My Ordeal At OAUTHC Yesterday

How They Toyed With Her Precious Life: An Account of My Ordeal At OAUTHC Yesterday

It was a pathetic event Yesterday. One of the students in my faculty suddenly collapsed and became unconscious. The school health centre had to refer us to the Accident & Emergency Unit of OAUTHC, Ile-Ife. I joined four other student executives in the ambulance as we sped of.

Barely, few minutes to the Emergency Unit, there was a huge traffic on the road. Incredibly, it was presumably a funeral party hosted by one high political chieftain in the community. Cars blocked the one-lane road on all sides. Even with the whirring of the siren, we spent over 20 minutes before we found a way amidst the heavy traffic. I wondered, how on earth would the hospital roads be blocked because of a party. I marveled. We had no option but to come down from the ambulance to ward the traffic.

The lady lying helpless in the ambulance was already looking lifeless as the drip passed into her vein was almost getting exhausted. We spent about 30 minutes on a route that shouldn't take more than 7 minutes. All because some persons were politically celebrating their dead.

On getting to the Emergency Ward, we spent another 10 minutes making a file for the unconscious lady. The 'abiku' personnel in charge insisted that without a file, no doctor will attend to her. We were also asked to proceed to the NHIS office to complete the registration. Unfortunately, the NHIS office was under lock and key. Maybe, they've closed for the day. Who knows?

The nurse who followed us from the University Health Centre suggested that we (faculty executives)should contribute money to buy drugs as nothing could be done to help her. This got us mad and we insisted that a First Aid treatment be given to her, seeing her critical state. Her heartbeat was getting slower. I couldn't believe my ears, when a nurse asked me, "Where is her glove?" Do I look like a doctor? How would you ask me for a glove? Oh! If there are no gloves available, she won't be treated? Is that the new NMA directives? Indeed, our doctors are sick.  The drama I witnessed today showed that apart from the theoretical university degrees, most of our health experts are as empty as the oxygen cylinders in OAUTHC.

Almost an hour that she went unconscious, all we witnessed was both traffic and professional insanity. Is that why the mortuary is located next to the Emergency Unit? Our health experts are fast becoming 'mico-buharis'. Probably, many precious lives have been lost due to this  topnotch madness in the hospital. Enough is enough! We cannot continue making lives more miserable for ourselves, yet praying for Nigeria.

NESA: Economics Students Suspend Financial Secretary

NESA: Economics Students Suspend Financial Secretary
By John Beloved

The Nigeria Economics student association (NESA) OAU chapter held its final semester congress last Thursday.

The Congress was staged as a means to check the state of the association and deal with the faults of her executives.

Graced with the presence of the NESANs, the Congress men  Audited financial statement for May, June and july 2018 by the Audit unit of the association.

On the verge by the Congress men, this statement revealed the frivolous activities of the executives  which led to the questioning of the President, Vice president and the financial secretary.

The financial secretary (Fadahunsi Oluwafemi) after much argument was found guilty by  the congressmen and was indefinitely suspended on 3 major grounds;

 1. The misplacement on the Receipt booklets 401-450 which has not been issued to NESANs from the total receipts booklet.
The discovery of 119 invalid receipts with issued out duplicates.

2. The overstatement of annual due which could not be validated due to non remittance in the receipt booklet.

3. These reason were summed up and seen by the congressmen as lack of accountability and failure in performance of his duties.

With the above , the financial secretary of the Association, Fadahunsi Oluwafemi was also suspended indefinitely.

The Congress was almost dissolved by an uproar  over the motion for the impeachment of the financial secretary.
The congress  however  provided an open floor for  the congressmen critically question the excesses of the executives who were found wanting.

According to one of the congressmen who spoke with OAU Peeps News Agency, the student questioned the effort of the unit report the uprisings to ESRC

"I remember vividly that some members of the ESRC are also member of the audit committee, Now my question my audit chairman, when all this issues were developing, was the ESRC aware?" He asked.

More so the  speaker, Honourable Adetunji also emphasised on the report stating  that no letter reporting the issue was  brought his notice.

"It is unfortunate  that the clerk is not is not present here in particular, but I can say that no letter was given to the ESRC in particular."

The embattled financial secretary when asked about the missing receipts and also invalid receipts narrated the ordeal , also trying to clarify what he felt were misconceptions

"Truth be told I misplaced receipt 401-450, it receipts were numbered 101-522 in 10 boxes with 50 in each and why it was 522 was because I was given extra but I was written down which made it 522, so out of the 10reciepts I misplaced 1 which is numbered 401-450 and when presenting to the audit committee I made mention that, it was carelessness on my part to have misplaced the receipts before submitting.

Concerning reciept 101-135, there was a lecturers forum, there were about 170 students at the forum who needed to collect their receipts, so I had to tear out the duplicates and sign immediately before giving it out to the students. It was a mistake on my part that I did not go back to my original copy to sign it that is why it was classified invalid ". He added.

Meanwhile , Students from the department of Economics who spoke with OAU Peeps News Agency expressed their total disappointment  in the financial secretary and the present  administration led by Ezekiel Gbolagun.

Speaking ,  a member of the association who is also the  director of programme, Honorable Ridwan, he angrily expressed total disappointment in the association.

"" I'm the programme director of this association but I will never conform to such an act, this is stupid.
I was chatted up by two former members of the  executives not to show up for this meeting but I did.
The president cannot even properly preside the congress.
The financial secretary of a 3month old association misplaced receipts, I'm highly disappointed in this association. I'm resigning, I'll send my letter of resignation to the ESRC tomorrow, whether there is a sitting or not, I don't care! "" He said.

Not forgetting the slack in other members of the executives which includes the president and Vice President, the congressmen after questionings  concluded that the audit committee conducts further investigations with a mandate to report at the next congress before deciding on the actions to be taken.
