July 15 Deadline For Screening May No Longer Hold
Trailing the scrapping of the Post-UTME exercise by the Federal Government and the following comments on the proposed screening procedure by the University Registrar a few days back, there are strong indications that the July 15th deadline which was previously advertised by the University for it's Admissions Screening may no longer hold.
After a visit by our correspondent to the University's ICT centre, we were able to gather that the Screening procedure which is yet to commence, as the application portal has been offline, can no longer close on the 15th of July.
Our source, who decided to remain anonymous, stated that the Screening exercise may not even occur anytime soon as an acting Vice-Chancellor was needed to initiate the process. However, no official statements have been made in light of this and thus it may not be unwise to continue to check the University's Portal.
As always, we would continue to keep the Great Ife Community and society at large apprised of further developments as concerning this subject matter.

On Monday, we got reports that the leaderships of the OAU branch of Non Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) met with the Ooni, in a bid to resolve the institution's crisis.
The #ReOpenOAU campaign entered its 8th day today and neither President Muhammadu Buhari nor his Vice, Yemi Osinbajo has responded to any of the hundreds of tweets pleading for their intervention. Also, our observation of the Senate sittings since Tuesday, shows that the Senate President's promise that the Senate will discuss the issue is yet to happen.
OAU students have been condemned home for over 3 months now with no resumption date in view.
How Candidates May Be Screened For The 2016/2017 OAU Admissions
OAU Peeps News Agency brings to you what you need to know as it relates to Obafemi Awolowo University.
This year, admission quota for UTME candidates and Direct Entry (DE) students will be at ratio 90:10. This means if OAU will be admitting a maximum of 6,000 candidates this year, 5,400 of them will be UTME candidates and the remaining 600 will be DE candidates.
Note, there will be no Post-UTME this year and candidates seeking admission into OAU are not required to come to the campus for screening. OAU Peeps learnt that candidates will be solely recommended for admission by JAMB and the only criterion will be the candidate’s UTME score. Chances of admission may also be influenced by the State from which the candidate comes should he or she fail to meet up with the merit quota.
This year, the quota system is as follows;
Merit – 45%
Catchment area – 35%
Educationally Less Disadvantaged States (ELDS) – 20%
Before explaining what the above means, note that OAU has 6 catchment area states including; Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Oyo and Lagos. ELDS peculiar to OAU include Kogi, Kwara, Rivers, Edo, Benue and other states.
The quota system works this way. Let’s assume the Department of Medicine and Surgery will admit the maximum of 100 candidates. This means:
The total number of those that will be admitted using the merit quota will be 45/100 x maximum number of candidates the department will admit (in this case, 100) = 45 candidates.
For the catchment area state, it will be 35/100 x maximum number of candidates the department will admit (in this case, 100) = 35 candidates.
Using similar method above, 20 candidates will be admitted by ELDS quota.
How will the candidates be selected?
Like we stated earlier, admission is expected to be strictly by UTME scores. Candidates for various departments are arranged in a decreasing order based on their UTME score. For example, if 6 candidates apply to study English with the following scores; Tunde – 260, Kemi – 201, Idowu – 222, Bukola – 213, Abdullahi – 200 and Emmanuel – 302. They will be ranked as follows;
Emmanuel – 302
Tunde – 260
Idowu – 222
Bukola – 213
Kemi – 201
Abdullahi – 200
Then, the merit quota system is applied first. In that order, if we are to consider the previous example, the first 45 students are admitted automatically for Medicine. Then the rest are now ranked again in the same decreasing order but now based on the catchment area states.
Then using the 35% quota, each of the six states will have about 5.83%. This means the number of candidates to be admitted here will be shared equally. Still using Medicine where 35 people will be admitted, it will now be 6 candidates per state but the last state will only have 5 admitted since the quota is not up to 36. The 6 admitted candidates per state will be those with the highest UTME scores for that particular department after the merit people have been admitted.
Using the same logic, the ELDS with 20 candidate spaces will be selected.
After this, those admitted will now proceed for screening presenting their O’level results and other documents for verification.

EURO 2016 Final: Seven Football Lessons Picked

The 2016 UEFA European Championship, commonly referred to as UEFA EURO 2016 or simply EURO 2016 has come and gone. Yesterday night witnessed the final match of the tournament. The 120-minutes encounter, refereed by the highly revered English referee – Mark Clatenburg, saw the “A Selecao” army coming out winners, against all odds.
Here are the major football lessons learnt from the France vs Portugal match:
1. Defending is key
Football in today’s world is not always about attacking and scoring goals. As important as scoring may seem, a very good defensive setup is needed, so that the scored goals can count at the end. Moreover, in an encounter like yesterday’s final, where both teams are almost at par, the defensive play may eventually be the difference. This is evident as the Portugese team’s defensive resilience paid off, ending the match with an important clean sheet.
2. Right Substitutions influence big matches
With Ronaldo limping off in the early stages, it seemed all was over for Portugal. Then Fernando Santos threw on Quaresma in his place, bringing Nani back to the middle as a false striker. Portugal were resigned to playing without an arrow man for the better part of the game until the closing time when Santos again brought on Moutinho (to reshape the midfield) and Eder – the eventual match winner (to serve as a focal point. The French national team made substitutions too, but they were not as right and influential tactically as those of the Portugese team.
4. Possession is not everything
It’s well known that France enjoyed the better part of the ball, dominated all areas of the pitch but at the end had little or nothing to show for it. The same transpired in the Germany vs France semi-final tie where Germany had 66% possession but ended up losing 2-0 to France. Summarily, football these days is all about making the little possession you have count.
5. An “arrow head” is important
Portugal played far much better when Eder was brought on. The Portugal players started directing their attacking plays to their hit-man, this eventually paid off as the powerful striker scored the only goal of the match with a fine effort just outside the box. Eder was Portugal’s Vardy for the night. On the other hand, France played less good once Giroud was substituted and replaced with Gignac, who is a “false-9”.
6. Fluidity in formation plays a major role
The French National team apparently had no “plan B”. The team played the same formation from the start to the end and players stuck to their playing positions for most part of the game. This is in contrast to the Portugese team that constantly reshuffle formations, with the likes of Nani, Mario, Quaresma, Moutinho switching playing positions when necessary.
7. Star Players don’t always win matches, team spirit does
France had all the stars, with the likes of Payet, Pogba, Griezmann, Giroud and the rest, they were not able to assert their individual brilliance on the game. The Portugese National team, which lost its “only real” star at the early stages of the game, but picked out the positives in the incident as they played with arguably the greatest team spirit any team has shown in the competition thus far. They were attacking and defending massively with every player tracking back as soon as the team loses the ball. Though stars may bring individual brilliance, but this is not always enough to win games.
If the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal with all their stars can surrender the EPL title to Leicester City whom nobody knows any of their players until their rise to stardom, then today’s football can be said to be more of team understanding and less of star players.
Congratulations to Portugal as the world awaits their continued brilliance at the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.
