"We Are Not A Transition Committee..." - OAU Students' Union Electoral Commission Speaks

Fadele Olusola (ShowBaba), Chairman of the Electoral Commission

During a Press Conference organised by the   recently elected leadership of the Obafemi Awolowo University Students' Union Electoral Commission on Sunday, 6th November 2016, the Electoral commission has openly cleared the air on certain misconceptions that may be surrounding the purpose of its establishment.

The Public Relations Officer of the Commission, Mr Durodola Lukmon, stated whilst briefing the gentlemen of the press that the primary objective of the commission is to organise the elections that would usher in a new set of leaders for the Union. He however further corroborated, quoting appropriate parts of the Students' Union Constitution, that till a new leadership was brought on board, the commission through its Chief Electoral Officer, which is the Chairman of the Commission, would act as an ad-hoc leadership structure. The PRO however stated emphatically that the committee was not a transition committee as its primary purpose was the organisation of the Union elections and every standing committee before the Friday elections stood dissolved, including the controversial Security committee.

Also commenting on the conduct of the elections, the Chairman of the Commission, Mr Fadele Olusola, stated that up to him, he would have preferred the conduct of the elections in the first semester, however, due to the present state of things, that was no longer a possibility. He then further reasserted the words of the Public Relations officer, that the elections would be conducted as early as possible in the second semester and according to him, "...the elections would be a model for other students' union elections and even for administrations to come".

On the sources of funds to conduct the elections, the Chairman stated that the commission would be working with the University Management to access the paid Students' Union dues for the conduct of the elections.

Meanwhile, clarifications were also made on the role of the Petition Committee in the ad-hoc leadership structure. According to the Public Relations Officer of the Electoral Commission, the Election Petition Committee would serve as a judicial check on the activities of the Commission.

"Youth Are Not The Leaders Of Tomorrow" - Professor Pat Utomi

During the 9th Faculty week of the prestigious Faculty of Agriculture, Obafemi Awolowo University, the chairperson of the day when giving his address stated that people should stop rating him so high, but should simply call him Pat Utomi - the teacher because he's always been a teacher.

He stated further that what the Nigeria government has always embarked on is "progressive degeneration", which is the cause of continuous reduction in value of the nation.

He said these in his speech titled "The Paradox of Progressive Degeneration" - a topic which he dissected to the pleasure and reasoning of students and Academicians at the Oduduwa Hall. Prof. Pat Utomi made it clear that the cause of Nigeria's present economic problems was, in his words; "Nigerians had been unlearning to degenerate."

He later flourished the hall by telling the students present that "You are not the Leaders of tomorrow but the leaders of now", in his conclusive words he said the youths are the ones who can liberate Nigeria.

Some other dignitaries present at the programme was the Ag. Vice Chancellor of the University - Prof Anthony Elujoba, the Chairman of Mutual Benefits Group - Akin Olubiyi (also the guest speaker of the day), Prof A. A Amusan - the Dean of the Faculty, Prof Dibu Ojerinde - Ex JAMB registrar.

Some important dignitaries were presented with awards for their excellence in Agribusiness and Educational lines, some of the awardees were - Prof. Bamire, Mr Henry Ojo, Animal Care Konsult Nigeria Limited and others.

On the lecture, the University's Ag.VC concluded that the University will endeavour to set the pace for Agricultural development in Nigeria.

OAU SU Electoral Commission's First Release Stirs Controversy

Following the elections of the leaders of the elected Faculty representatives serving as electoral commissioners and petitioners on Friday, 4th November, 2016. Controversies have started to tail the commission on the announcement of its first meeting.

The meeting notification which was published on the social media in the early hours of Saturday, 5th November, 2016 caused quite the uproar in the Great Ife online community due to its signatories. The notification was signed by the Secretary and chairman of the committee who in the release signed as Secretary General and Acting President of the Obafemi Awolowo University Students' Union respectively.

Several reactions and comments from various students and student bodies then accompanied the shocking act which was corrected some hours later by the Secretary of the commission. The Secretary, Mr Akande Paul, known popularly as Positive, when reached, claimed responsibility for the mistake, claiming that the mistake was from his end. However, efforts to reach the Chairman of the Commission as at the time of compiling this report prove abortive.
