OAU Welcomes First Set Of e-Students

The Obafemi Awolowo University’s Center for Distance Learning (OAUCDL) today welcomed its pioneer set for the Online Distance Learning Programme. This was at the Matriculation Ceremony which held at the Oduduwa Hall of the OAU Main Campus.

The OAUCDL Online Distance Learning programme is accredited by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) and allows students to receive their lectures online using a customized study tablet (Vigitab).

The Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Bamitale Omole, whilst addressing the students, said: “you have the singular honor of being the first set of students in our eLearning programme, the first of its type in Nigeria. I congratulate you on being pioneers of the eLearning revolution in the country. I want to assure you that your distant learning mode of admission does not in any way imply inferiority in status, compared to our conventional students, either in terms of lecture delivery or the certificates you receive at the end of your programmes. Our university guards jealously the integrity of its degrees and diplomas whether obtained in the conventional or distance learning mode. Hence your various curricula have gone through the usual high standards of excellence of the University Senate for which Obafemi Awolowo University is well known.”

The Center for Distance Learning Director, Professor Bode Asubiojo, speaking also at the ceremony said: “This development is the first of its kind in Nigeria and we are pleased with it. We have replicated the classroom experience on a tablet device for students. For the first time, students can receive lectures, submit assignments, participate in forums, take quizzes, and even rewind their lecturers, all from the comfort of their homes, offices or wherever they may be in Nigeria or abroad.”

The eLearning solution is powered by a Learning Management System (VigiLearn) that allows students to receive lectures, submit assignments, relate with peers, participate in group discussions and get graded without being physically within the four walls of a lecture room. The Vigitab is specifically built for Nigeria and allow for users to continue to study and receive lectures with limited internet connection.

“Our primary charge at the Center for Distance Learning of Obafemi Awolowo University is to provide quality education to the teeming number of Nigerian youths who possess the prerequisite qualifications for entry to Nigerian Universities but are denied admission owing to inadequate facilities on campus and the working class who are desirous of pursuing undergraduate and post graduate programmes whilst still retaining their jobs; the Online Distance Learning programme allows us to deliver on this objective.” Professor Asubiojo highlighted.

Courses on offer for the Online Distance Learning Programme are B.Sc. Accounting and Bachelor of Nursing Science. The Center plans to include more courses in the future.

OAU Students Escape Death In Osun Communal Clash (Pictures)

Some pre-degree students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State, on Wednesday escaped being killed during the violence which erupted among the people of Ipetumodu and Ashipa communities.

Our correspondent gathered late on Wednesday that the violence was caused by a boundary dispute between the two communities.
It was not clear if there were casualties but it was gathered that some persons were injured in the clash.

A resident of Ipetumodu, who identified himself as Taiwo, told our correspondent on the telephone that residents of Ashipa community invaded their town and set buildings ablaze including students hostels, where some pre-degree students of the OAU lived.
Taiwo said, “Hoodlums from Ashipa community invaded out town and started shooting and destroying houses. They set some buildings on fire and people ran away.”
Another resident, who claimed to be from Ashipa community, however, accused residents of Ipetumodu of being the aggressors.

The Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mr. Ayo Olowe, confirmed the crisis to our correspondent on the telephone.

He said, “There was crisis and some houses were burnt especially in Ipetumodu. Some persons were said to have stormed the town, vandalised the students’ property and set buildings ablaze.

“They said they brought out the students belongings before setting the hostels ablaze.”

OAU CDL Spam Expredites With Online Degree Programme Admission Offers

The Centre for Distance Learning, Obafemi Awolowo University has created a short-lived happiness for some students seeking admission into the prestigious citadel, especially those that are yet to be admitted and were part of the 2013/2014 predegree academic session.

In similar messages sent to many of them reads

"Congrats! You have been offered admission into B.Sc. Accounting at OAU. Login to http://eportal.oaucdl.edu.ng Username: Your Pre-Degree No, Password..."
These students were very excited when they got the message on the phone thinking it is the long awaited normal admission to resume the 2014/2015 academic session in Ife. They later got to understand it is admission to undertake the newly introduced online degree programme after explanation by colleagues and friends.

Many of them have since showed their displeasure at what they regard as Spam messages as they only took advantage of their contact with the school to send them the promotional message. One Wale said 'I was so happy when I got the message, only to discover OAU CDL just deceived me. I did not apply for any online programme and I don't see any reason why I should be sent that fake message from an authentic source'

New OAU Pre-Degree Fee Is Extortionate And Unacceptable -ERC

Press Statement of the Education Rights Campaign(ERC) OAU Branch.

NEW OAU PRE-DEGREE FEE IS EXTORTIONATE AND UNACCEPTABLE

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife management recently announced a new, but outrageous fee regime for her pre-degree programme. Under this new fee arrangement, the male candidates admitted for the pre-degree programme are expected to pay N177, 500 while the female candidates pay N212, 500 before starting online registration as students. The female students are paying more as a result of hostel accommodation charge.

The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) totally condemns this fee regime and demands its immediate reversal. We call on the OAU Students’ Union, staff unions, civil society groups and Nigerian workers and parents to jointly reject this mass-scale extortion. This new fee was an inconsiderate leap from the exorbitant N152, 500, which students in this programme paid last session. There is no reason for this hike other than the quest by the university to make huge profit at the risk of impoverishing parents and pricing education out of the reach of the toiling masses.

The OAU Pre-degree programme runs for about a year as an equivalent of UTME for candidates seeking admission into undergraduate courses in the University. In recent period, tens of thousands of students always apply for the programme because of limited chances of getting admission through UTME. Parents are often enticed by the notion that preferences are given to candidates who have successfully completed the programmes over their UTME counterparts in the undergraduate admission system of the school. In fact, this is not true, because thousands usually get admitted into the Pre-degree programme, whereas the university has an admission capacity for only a tiny fraction of this huge population. But the OAU management simply preys on the thirst of candidates and parents for tertiary education to squeeze their pockets dry.

Aside the fact that running this programme does not guarantee admission for students, the conditions which students undergo for the period of the programme are inhumane and harsh. Erratic water and power supply is the order of the day at the Moro campus situated in Ipetu Modu, Osun State. Yearly, students in this programme always complain about high rate of insecurity, including burglary and rape. The programme has continued to serve as a business venture for the OAU management.

For us in the ERC, the idea of a pre-degree programme is an ill-result of the continuous underfunding of education by the government which has resulted in fewer admission spaces. If education has been appropriately funded, there would be no absurdity of limited admission spaces and university managements like OAU’s would not have been able to turn the thirst for literacy into a money-making machine.

With the recent increment in pre-degree fee, the Prof Tale Omole-led OAU management has only maintained its consistent record of pro-rich, anti-poor policies in the university. In reality, the only image that comes to mind after mentioning OAU is the slogan? POOR STUDENTS ARE NOT WELCOME HERE.? This new hike is coming at the heel of a similar increment in the undergraduate charges of the university, which was protested and still being resented by undergraduate and post- graduate students of the university. While the university had promised that the fee would improve the conditions of learning for the undergraduate students, the reality of conditions of learning on OAU campus today is abysmal and pathetic. Only last month, students on the Ile-Ife campus of the university protested an over 7-day power outage and erratic water supply. It follows to say that the new regime of charges on the Moro campus of the university, if not rejected swiftly by parents and Nigerians, would not mean any substantial improvement in the conditions of learning and living on that campus.

The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) demands a halt to the business-oriented education policy of the Prof. Tale Omole led administration, which has made poor parents to go out of their way to pay for the profit-first logic of the institution. We call on the OAU Students’ Union to reject this hike and organise actions against its implementation. If this current pattern of fee hikes continues, then education in coming period would be an exclusive right of the rich, and luxury for the poor majority.

We demand adequate funding of education and democratic management of education to include elected representatives of education workers and students. We also demand improvement in the quality, facilities and conditions of existing tertiary institutions and the establishment of more schools to address the shortage of admission spaces.

Signed
Omole Ibukun
Secretary, ERC

Newly Admitted OAU Predegree Students To Pay N212,500

In Alero Idowu of Channels TV's voice; "There seems to be a raised-fee wind blowing across Nigeria universities right now. The latest one being the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife...", the Pre-Degree programme of the foremost varsity is also not left out in the wind erosion as the school fees has assumed a more expensive state.

Just immediately after the release of the results of the entrance examination of the aspirants for the 2014/2015 Predegree programme, the cut-off marks for various Subject Combinations were disclosed which obviously pointed to the fact that the performance this year was very poor(See the cut-off marks here). Those who are within the 'grace zone' have been told to start paying for the Programme and to the surprise of many, there was a substantial increment in the total fees. The school fees that has been stable for the past two sessions showed an increment from N162,500 to N212,500. These admitted students have less than two weeks to get the payment made in full else any student who is unable to get that amount may forfeit his/her admission.

Reactions have however started to come in from many of those admitted and even ex-predites. This is an excerpt of their comments on our page;
  • "like seriously. she we no fit price am nii"
  • "I knew dere was more 2 d devilish edifice dat was bn put up by ####### and his 'boys'......dis can b likened to professional extortion"
  • "OAU main campus fees has nothing to do with OAU cdl fees. I'm sure the hostel is very ok. Atleast you can be sure of WATER and ELECTRICITY, unlike those in the hostels outside the sch. Eventhough the school fees is much, I'm sure you you guys will enjoy it especially those inside the school"
  • "OAU u guys av really tried oo,, only God knws if d set for nxt decades wont pay upto 1 million naira for the programme"
  • "CDL wants to chop money, serious instuitions now do wat they like,It will amaze you some students will forfeit this pd admission,How can an average parent raise over 200k within 2weeks"

Students that meet up with the set cut-off mark of their Subject Combination have since been told to login to their account on the OAU CDL website(www.oaucdl.edu.ng) to download their admission letter and other registration packages.

Resumption for the 2014/2015 session has however been set for Tuesday 18th November, 2014 when the Screening/Registration of students commences.

An Ex-Predite Speaks As OAU Predegree Entrance Exam Commences

1. Please do not panic because you are going to see thousands of candidates coming to take the exam like you... But just believe in your self. To those that are not computer literate, do not think that "I don't think I will pass this exam because I do not know anything about computer", being a computer literate does not have anything to do with this exam.

2. Also, be time conscious but make sure you do not do 'over sabi' especially in the aspect of Use of English (English bad ehn! You go dey fail am but for your mind, you go dey apy say you go get am...lol).

3. Also, you would be given just an hour for the exam, please make sure your work, at least 3 minutes before the allotted time ends.
4. Make sure you eat before you go and also I will advice you not to leave IFE till the next day after your exam, why? Because, you might be sent a text message to come back and re-write your exam... (Last year when we had our entrance exam, a friend of mine left for Lagos immediately after the exam and was later sent an SMS to come and re-write his exam again the next day, but he could not make it...). NOTE- What might have caused this was the student's inability to submit before his/her time elapsed, or maybe the computer system he/she used. Should notice any fault on the system you want to use, please do not hesitate to inform the invigilators, do not be shy!

5. Please eat before you go to the hall o!. Now, I don't want you to go and write the exam, just go there and pass!!! Success is yours. May you all come out in flying colours (in sha allahu) (in Jesus name). Ah loff u all!!!!!

The adviser here is Adeyinka Hassan, an ex-predite and prospective student of the prestigious Africa's most beautiful campus, OAU.
