The first time I browsed my e portal page during the sessional break and saw the then annoying clause, 'congratulations! You've been allocated a bed space in Alumni Hall,' it was appalling. I could not believe my eyes, so I came up with an excuse of false hope: I will be reallocated to another hall. I never dreamt of being allocated a bed space in alumni hall. I don't think I need to tell you my preference.
The decision to move to Alumni took me a month. In that month of indecision, my friends and I went to 'inspect' the hall. The beauty that heralds this hall is just the parking lot...and well, the common room. It is important that I take cognisance of my environment. The first thing I noticed on the walls of block 1 was...

" Avoid squatting.
       Enjoy your privacy."

Let's omit 'squatting'. The word that aroused my curiosity was 'privacy'. In Alumni?, seriously?, I wondered within me. Don't forget the fact that I've not stayed in alumni before and I've heard that Alumni is a 'Glorified Mozambique Hall'(for lots of reasons, bunk beds being the utmost). Unlike Moremi where a lady can have her corner all to herself, in Alumni, you have to share a bunk with another girl. So what's is this 'privacy' all about? Suddenly, a lady opened a door to one of the rooms, and what do I see? Curtains!,shielding each bunk and corner. My expression was 'oh!curtains?'. Then,it occurred to me that this is the 'PRIVACY' I am to enjoy.

Questions/opinions have been raised concerning 'the tying of curtains in Alumni Hall.

Obasanjo: Okonjo Iweala Derailed Under Jonathan

Obasanjo: Okonjo Iweala Derailed Under Jonathan

Ex-President speaks on Jonathan, IBB, Halliburton, others
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo hasgiven an insight into why former
Ministerof Finance Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was less effective under
the immediate past administration of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s tenure has turned out to be highly controversial, with the
former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Charles Soludo accusing
her of running the economy aground. Besides, Edo State Governor Adams
Oshiomhole insists the former Coordinating Minister for the Economy
should explain how $1.2billion Excess
Crude Account cash was spent.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala maintains that she did her best.
Obasanjo, in an interview with the online publication “Premium Times”
in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, spoke
on some of the key decisions he took while in office, his relationship with some
key political figures, his book My Watch and the Halliburton bribery
scandal. He said Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala performed better under him because
he understood
her weaknesses and managed them well. He said the former World Bank
president liked to always have her way, adding: “If I
am the one in charge, then it has to be what I see as what is in the
best interest of the nation”.
Obasanjo added: “Take Ngozi (Okonjo- Iweala), who worked for me. And
who worked competently for me. Because I know Ngozi’s weaknesses, but
I know
her strong points. Her strong point is technical competence. But Ngozi
needs to be led and to be supervised. Now will you
comment on Ngozi who worked for me as the same Ngozi who worked for
Jonathan? Will you? But it’s the same person.
“She derailed because…. when Jonathan even said he wanted her, I said
‘I hope you can manage her.’ And Ngozi herself sent me a text (and) I
told her times have
changed.” On what made him remove Mrs. Okonjo- Iweala as finance
minister, Obasanjo said:  ”I said I’ve touched reform. I’ve
touched almost everywhere except Ministry of Education and Ministry of
Foreign Affairs. So one day, I was in my office and the Head of
Service, Yayale (Ahmed), came in. He said ‘look, you are
looking not happy, what is the matter?’ I said I am worried about two
ministries and the ministers who can do the work I wanted to be done
there in these two
ministries are already doing good work where they are. And he said
‘talk let me see.’ I said education and foreign affairs. And he said
‘who are the ministers that
you think can do the job.’ I said Oby (Ezekwesili), Ngozi, and
El-Rufai. He said ‘what is Oby doing for you now?’ I said Oby is doing
Solid Minerals. He said ‘Sir, in
all sincerity, I know you don’t like to rank ministries, but will you
say Ministry of Solid Minerals is as important as Ministry of
Education?’ I said ‘yes, I don’t rank
ministries, they are all important. He said, ‘Can’t you take any of
these three to do education and then get somebody else to
do solid minerals?’ So I took Oby there. Now in the Ministry of
Finance we had got debt relief, so I could afford to take Ngozi to
Foreign Affairs. That’s all. And
then she had Nenadi (Usman) who was the minister of state. She’s not a buffoon.
And then, which is also part of her
weakness, she came to me and said, ‘look’, since it’s Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, she will like to take International Finance
along with it. I said talk to your sister with whom you are working
and I don’t see anything wrong with that provided you work out a
relationship. But she didn’t accord Nenadi the recognition and
the consideration that was necessary. I then said the International
finance should go back to Finance and that happened. She said she
couldn’t act. She put in a letter of resignation. And she had done
that before, and before she could comeand get people to come and beg,
I announced acceptance (of her resignation).” On why the refineries
are in a bad shape, Obasanjo said: ”Take, for instance, the decision
on privatising all refineries. I explained that what I met were
refineries that were not working, refineries that were given to an
amateur for repairs, for maintenance, what they call turn around
maintenance to the company of Emeka Offor – Chrome Group. Where has
Emeka Offor maintained refineries before? Where has he? That’s what we
met. So, the refineries were not working. I called Shell. I said ‘come
and help us, just run the refinery.’ Shell was frank with me. “It said
that ‘we make our money from upstream, downstream; is more of a
service. Two, your refineries are small. Port Harcourt is 60,000
barrels a day. Refineries now go 300,000 barrels a day. Three, your
refineries have not been maintained well. Four, we don’t want to go
into the corruption that is entailed in all these’. I said ‘ok, come
and help me run it’. They refused. Now when I then saw people who
agreed to take 51 per cent equity in two of the refineries; they did
not promise to pay, they paid $750 million, I was dancing and I said
‘look, this is God-sent.’ My successor came (and)
they cancelled it and paid them the
money back. Those refineries today – you won't get them because they have become scrap"

Tech Talk With Dammy - How To Save A Wet Phone

By Damilola Olarinre

You're walking in your area on a cold evening after a downpour. You're reading the message from your friend while walking, you know you shouldn't but the gist was just too good to wait till you get home. All of a sudden, you slip and fall into a puddle and after you finally gather yourself, you find your precious phone sitting at the bottom of the puddle. The glow of the screen catches your eyes from the water as your heart bleeds for your precious phone.
Now many of us have experienced something related to or different from this scenario, but it all ends with your phone sitting in water and you confused as to what to do. Well, it's time to know what to do and what not to do if your phone falls in water.
The first and probably most obvious thing to do is to remove the phone from as soon as possible. Well are you still wondering why? It's quite simple actually. The longer the phone spends in water, the lesser its chances of survival.
Next, you have to find a way to power the phone off if it isn't already powered off. Now there are some phones with removable batteries, if your phone is one of such, remove the battery immediately, don't even think about replying that last message, just remove the battery. If your phone is one of those new ones with non-removable battery, start the shutdown process as quickly as possible.
Your phone is now powered down, so what next? Well, the next thing to do is to remove the sim card or cards as the case may be and the memory card. This is necessary because water has the capacity to corrode the terminals of your sim and memory card.
This next step is only for those with a technical knowhow. If and only if you do have a technical knowhow, well this step is for you and that is to disassemble the phone. It is however to note that disassembling your phone may void your warranty, depending on the terms stated in it. So before you disassemble your device, check and familiarize yourself with the terms. If you do not have a warranty or according to the terms, disassembling your phone will not void your warranty or you don't care about the warranty and you know how to, then you may disassemble your phone so it can dry faster and more effectively. However, if you do not know how to disassemble your phone, I wouldn't advice you do because you may be causing more harm than good. But if you're willing to take the risk risk, I wish you the best. Besides there are tutorials online on how to disassemble different phones, you just have to search for them.
The last but not the least important step is finally drying the phone. Now there are a lot of mistakes and misconceptions that affect people who are trying to dry their phone. We'll try to weed them out now. First of all, do not attempt to dry the phone with an iron, cooker, microwave or anything with direct heat. You wanna know why? The circuitry of your phone is quite delicate and that amount of direct heat will most likely damage something in your phone which you may not be aware of till you try to turn it on. Secondly, do not attempt to use a hair dryer to dry your phone. This is because the hair dryer will create a small draft of wind which may blow the moisture deeper into the phone which may damage something that wasn't originally affected.
How do I properly dry my phone then you wonder. First of all, if you can lay your hands on a vacuum cleaner, you can place the phone in front of it and turn it on the highest setting. You're probably wondering why a vacuum cleaner is okay and a hair dryer is not. This is because while the hair dryer creates a draft which pushes the water further into the phone, a vacuum cleaner creates suction which draws the water out.
Another way you can dry your phone is by putting it in a container filled with silica. But in case you can't procure silica, a good substitute would be dry uncooked rice. Both silica and rice have absorbent capabilities which would help reduce your phone's moisture content.
Yet another method of drying your phone is to place it vertically about an arm's length from a working standing fan. Do not place it under a ceiling fan because gravity and the force of the breeze impacting the phone from above will just serve to drag the moisture deeper into the phone. If you're lucky and the sun happens to be shining, you can also sun-dry the phone.
Now you feel the phone is dry enough and you can't wait to turn the phone on. HOLD YOUR HORSES!!! It is advised to leave a phone that has come in contact with liquid off for at least 24hrs to eliminate the possibility of any moisture being left in the phone. So after 24hrs, you can turn on your phone and evaluate where you stand. If the phone doesn't come on, or it does but it has some tics it didn't have before, take the phone to an experienced and certified mobile phone technician explaining what happened and the steps you have taken. In fact, it is advised that if you follow all these steps and your phone functions normally, you still take the phone to a certified technician to rule out any negative scenarios.

OAU Students Rubbish TY's Agitated Trip To New York

The President of the Obafemi Awolowo University Students' Union, Omotayo Akande a.k.a TY has come under fire following his notification of the legislative arm of the Union, the Students' Representative Council on Wednesday of his intention to honour a supposed invitation to the New York, USA for a campus conference for students.

Some students have however drawn the SU President's attention to one of his paragraphs during his inauguration speech where he promised not to see his position as an avenue to get fame.

"It is indeed a life time opportunity to register a legacy and make mark of indelible impact. The orientation of leadership that we carry is that of service and not privilege, that of responsibility and not opportunity, that of learning and not looting, that of conscientisation and not connections. Unfortunately, this generation sees leadership as a privilege to harness, acquire, and accrue ephemeral wealth and fame. In our time we see it as a God-given privilege to serve, love, and to leave a legacy."
