OAU Final Year Students' Clearance Begins Today

OAU Final Year Students' Clearance Begins Today
One of the steps to be taken by a final year student of Obafemi Awolowo University upon completion of her programme is clearance. The clearance is however multifaceted requiring the final year brethen to move from one post to another.

OAU Peeps News Agency correspondents who visited the Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library was able able to gather that the library clearance has started today. Graduating students are expected to go to the library with a library clearance form (can be gotten from photocopying stands) including the four (4) borrowers' card and the library card itself. The process as at this morning (Monday) takes less than 10 minutes for each person.

As at the time of filing this report, it is not clear if all halls of residence have also started the hostel clearance.

OAU Pre-Degree Students Given 4 Days Holiday

The first contact of the 2015/2016 session of the Obafemi Awolowo University Pre-degree programme came to an end on Friday, 15th April 2015. The first contact of the programme which commenced last year December ended this past Friday upon the conclusion of the First Contact Examinations by the students of the programme.

However, the first contact holiday, which in times past was usually two weeks, has  been reduced this time around to just 4 days. The reduction in the break can be linked to the impromptu two weeks break earlier given to the students in March 2016 due to the collapse of a female hostel consequential to heavy Rains.

The management of the Pre-degree programme has hence announced Wednesday 20th April, 2016 as the resumption date for the second phase of the nine-month programme.

The Entirety of OAU Peeps News Agency hereby use this medium to wish all pre-degree students the best as they await their results and also happy resumption in advance.

Jenifa's Diary: My Candid Review - Pope Jay

Funke Akindele is one nollywood actress whose name is not strange to a high percentage of lovers and followers of the Nigerian Movie industry. However, I would like to believe she gained a lot of prominence with the movie; “Jenifa”. In fact, most people probably still do not know her name and still address her as “Jenifa”, the name of the character she played in the movie. At the time of its release and even till today, the “Jenifa” story was quite a very highly relevant story in the society. Jenifa was simply a story that described the depressing level of “wannabism”, discontent and vain competition that existed within the Nigerian System, most especially the tertiary education system. Students with humble backgrounds trying too desperately to be people they were not, perhaps because their environment did not expressly allowed them to express themselves. With a touch of relatable comedy, which the defective spoken english of the lead character provided, most Nigerians, including myself, had no choice but to give the Jenifa Story a thumbs up.

I personally feel, with no prejudice to the future, that Jenifa is perhaps the biggest creation of Funke Akindele. I have a hunch that even Funke and some other artistes in the industry recognise this fact as since the very first Jenifa movie, she and a number of artistes have either tried to reinvent or reportray the Jenifa story but then, only a few have been able to even try to match up on some relative standards and so when I heard of another of such attempts, this time from Funke Akindele herself, I was not as motivated to see the movie.

I simply wondered why we would be interested Jenifa’s diary about eight years after we we met Jenifa herself. So, in my mind, I had dismissed any intentions of watching another boring sequel of Jenifa. However, I got mixed reviews from friends and colleagues whom had seen the sitcom; while some were of the opinion that Funke Akindele was merely trying to hard to crawl back into the limelight, some others believed that Jenifa’s Diary was actually a sitcom worth viewing. For review’s sake and following a need for me to escape my stolid reality for a while, I saw Jenifa’s Diary. As was expected, the sad and sardonic use of the English Language by Jenifa remained constant in Jenifa’s Diary. However, I simply noticed that unlike the usual comical touch it usually added to the movie, Jenifa’s depressing Spoken English sometimes acted as a major buzz-kill. I simply found that she sometimes tried to hard to wrongly speak English. But then again, it could be simply because the idea of making jokes with bad English is not as totally strange again in the Nigerian system.

However, I believe, Funke Akindele has finally found a way to recreate the Jenifa Story in a workable continuum. With the introduction of new faces; Uba Micheal (Ogbolor), Folarin Falana (Falz), Omotunde Adebowale (Lolo) and a host of some other good actors, she has been able to evolve the Jenifa Character from the desperate wannabe with humble backgrounds to the repentant young adult who wants and now has to hustle her way to achieve education and consequentially success. But the again we can continue to write reviews all we want, Aunty Funke is making her money...

Resumption Date Remains Unannounced, As ASUU Confirms Commencement Of Leave

The social media community of the Obafemi Awolowo University has been flooded by the anxiety of resumption date and different news broadcast on resumption date for the 2015/2016 academic session. Students have remained in the dark regarding the new date of resumption which have been put to debate since the end of the 2014/2015 Rain semester exams due to several rumours and speculations going round on the 52 working days leave of ASUU.

In a radio broadcast on popular Orisun Fm in Ile-Ife, the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, OAU chapter, Dr Caleb Aborishade affirmed that they've started their leave since 6th of April 2016, and will end on the 24th of June. He said the leave is necessary for the lecturers to take care of themselves.

However, the University Management has not announced any date of resumption for both freshers and Stale students. Some students however believe that the silence of the Management means they still maintain their stand on the April 24th resumption date for freshers. However, online registration has not started which makes the possibility of resumption of the freshmen in April highly unlikely.

Also, it should be be recalled that May last year the university management granted the Academic Staff Union of University members leave which they rejected and this same union had reached a consensus in their last Congress to embark on the 52 working days leave and was made known to the university community through a communiqué, but it is rumoured that this time the university management disagree with the lecturers on this leave due to the disruption of the academic calendar.

As we await the Management's announcement and confirmation of a new date, students are enjoined to stay calm and debunk any unfounded information on resumption. As it stands now, there is no official date for resumption and efforts to reach both the School P. R. O, Mr Olanrewaju, and the ASUU Chairman have proven abortive. But you can trust OAU Peeps News Agency to continue to keep you updated as events unfold.
