Buhari's Acknowledgement Of Infrastructural Decadence In Our Universities Vindicates Our Agitation - OAU SU

Buhari's Acknowledgement Of Infrastructural Decadence In Our Universities Vindicates Our Agitation - OAU SU

President Buhari's assertions on the unpalatable living and learning infrastructures in our Universities vindicate our agitations as a moral one, the Obafemi Awolowo University Students' Union (SU) has said.

The OAU Students' Union leadership in her new year message signed by the President, Omotayo Akande and the Secretary General, Oketooto Oluwaseun to the university community has described the state of the students' struggle for improved welfare condition to have now attained a remarkable feat owning to the confession statement of the Nigerian President on the state of the tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

President Muhammadu Buhari had said during his maiden Presidential Media Chat on Thursday that he recognizes the extent to which infrastructures of the tertiary institutions in the country have gone bad. "The standard of tertiary institutions is really poor, I don't want students sitting on windows to take lectures." Buhari said

Buhari in his reaction to ways he plans to ameliorate the condition said he has earmarked N500b in the 2016 budget solely for infrastructural development in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The Students' Union has however declared her readiness to redirect agitation for better welfare conditions for students to a more national front and outside the four walls of the institutions. The Union leadership also called on the Minister of Education and the Finance Minister to ensure the Release of the earmarked N500b in the 2016 budget.

It will be recalled that the Management of Obafemi Awolowo University shut down the university on 5th December last year in the guise of a mid-semester break following students' demonstration for improved welfare conditions. The students have since taken to the social media displaying pictures of the worrisome state of living they are been subjected to. The media campaign has caught attention of many Nigerians including the President.
