OAU Students Suffer Chronic Transportation Crisis

By Beloved John

Rising as an effect of the varsity new accommodation policy, students of the Obafemi Awolowo University suffers serious transport defects.

Shortly after resumption, transportation in and out of the school premises becomes daring for students as they  are often seen in large groups queuing while waiting for buses to convey them to their  destinations.

This means have been against the pleasure of students who blames the school authority for such an unfavorable decision.

While expressing his thoughts
Oluwasogo Isreal, a part 3 student of political science Education laments over troubles of movement in the school

In his words, he said "you need to be in school between the hours of 5 to 6 pm to witness things for yourself,
Long queues for  students who have to wait long hours before getting bus, you have to be smart as it is now the survival of the fittest.
Everyone is rushing while some persons after waiting for so long would not get  bus and then be forced to trek from the campus to the school gate"

Aside the sudden population sprout of student accommodated outside the campus

A law limiting the number of available buses allowed to function on campus have been allegedly set up by the school  administration.
This law stipulate that a restricted number of not more than 100buses are allowed to ply the campus road.

While some students blames school accommodation others claimed that  this is a reason for the deficiency in road movement.

Amidst this controversial struggle,
Balogun Oladimeji. I. From the department of
Electronics and Electrical Engineering
grouses over the effects of this poor state on the students.

"It has really not been favourable for students, Especially in situations where   students have to struggle everyday to get bus to their various destinations after having a stressful day on campus. This is really not a palatable thing because students needs a  comfortable conditions to ease learning.
This also wastes their time and keeping them behind schedule because they also have a lot of things to attend to in their various hostels after lectures on campus. Students who have early morning lectures now will have to compete for buses to convey to school, making them look untidy afterwards. While in some cases would either miss classes or be late for them"

Although there currently seems to be no change on the struggles and the tedious task of waiting for a fast means of transportation

Mr Ahmed, A campus bus driver  who spoke with an OAU peeps correspondent explained that the transport limitation is an effect of  the school new accomodation policy.
An increase in the rate of student living off school  campus has raised the numbers of daily bus users.

He however stated  that although there is a rumoured law that stipulates a regulated number of bus drivers per day but added that  regulation has no effect on the current transport crisis stating that it has  have not been properly implemented.

While students await the action of the management towards these movement disabilities.

Mr olarewaju, OAU Public relations officer  while speaking with OAU Peeps News Agency said the university has no relationship with whatever transportation difficulties faced by the students.

"It has nothing to do with the university and i'm not aware of any transportation problem in the school but if there is, it is not the duty of the school to provide transportation for anybody, so the students should individually find their way in and out the campus" he said.

He however added that there is no  policy that stipulates bus movements stating that he is ignorant of such policy because the management  has no affair with movement of students.

Why We Haven’t Issued ID Cards To Students – OAU

Why We Haven’t Issued ID Cards To Students – OAU

By Uthman Samad

As controversy rages in Obafemi Awolowo University(OAU) over the issuance of Identity cards by the University Management, the University in an exclusive chat through her Public Relations Officer, Olarewaju Abiodun spoke on why the University has not issued identity cards, the University image maker also denied that the varsity charged any money for identity cards stating that no amount was charged for the purpose in the last academic session of the University.

Media reports had accused the University of ’embezzling’ over 17million naira (amount collected for identity cards) from the over 35,000 students in the varsity, a claim Mr Olarewaju faulted.

Students had also lamented the restricted opportunities due to lack of identity cards .

A student who simply identified herself as Sarah said she missed a scholarship opportunity due to lack of identity card: “I couldn’t meet up with some scholarship opportunities due to lack of a valid identity card and it was really painful”.

Another Student who spoke under anonymity due to sensitivity of the issue said “The identity card opens us to lots of issues and anomalies,i have gone through harassment in town because i was not given identity card and the varsity is not saying anything about it”.

While speaking on the development with OAU Peeps News Agency, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Abiodun Olarewaju said the accusation is merely propaganda

“First and foremost, the university management never collected a dime from any body for ID card, so let us get that clear. So the idea of ‘they collected money from us and they didn’t give us ID card’ is exceptionally propaganda.

“Secondly, we had some logistics with icons and because we don’t want to commit any error because OAU is a brand on its own, there were two instances why we noticed some errors and such errors could pass if it were not to be OAU but because there’s a particular level of excellence below which we can be expected to fall, so we have decided that Instead of a man bringing is this and that, we have decided, we will bring everything together this session and that’s what’s going on here.

Actually, the issuance of ID card for this session and for the last session are in top gear.

Abiodun olanrewaju, while commenting on whether the school Management is aware of the latest move by Students of the institution by tabling the issue to Economic and Financial crime control (EFCC) said “well, we are an institution, whether the Students have taken it to EFCC or not is not in the matter for us now. We have not received anything from EFCC, and I will like to tell you loud and clear that EFCC does not deal in frivolities. So if we don’t collect money for anything, and I want to also believe that anything you post on social media by now on what the Senate has passed, you must make sure that it’s correct.”

The Public Relations Officer of OAU also said that Students who according to him spread false rumors can be prosecuted

“Otherwise, don’t forget that these students are more than 18 of age, so they can be prosecuted too for spreading false alarm and anything related to rumours.
So there must be a clear demarcation between responsible citizenship and youthful brigandage, so that’s clear.

“So as am talking to you now, we haven’t seen anything from EFCC because EFCC will investigate first, then after that if we have a case to answer, EFCC will send on us, this is a free country. OAU is a brand that train Students to dominate its environment, but we still want our students to be very much conscious and careful on whatever they do, particularly the aspect of names or rumour in the social media because there’s a law now that says that if you spread anything false or rumour in the social media in the name of anything and is now found to be false, there are sanctions behind. So, our (OAU) Students should be careful, in as much as we believe in freedom of speech for them, because in OAU, we don’t guide our students. If OAU has given a free land for leadership for our Students, at the same time, we wouldn’t want to exhibit undue youthful exorbitance that can land them in trouble.”

Obafemi Awolowo University resumed for a new session on April 29, with returning students expected to be on campus from today (May 14), 2018.

SSANU, NASU, NAAT To Resume Indefinite Strike Next Week

SSANU, NASU, NAAT To Resume Indefinite Strike Next Week
NON-academic staff in the nation’s universities under the auspices of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), National Association of Academic Technologist (NATT) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) on Wednesday, threatened to resume indefinite strike action over the failure of the Federal Government to honour the agreement reached with the unions.
Speaking on the planned strike, the Chairman of Joint Action Committee (JAC), at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Mr Dele Durojaye, said the industrial action by the union may commence next week.

According to Durojaye, the strike action became imperative because of the failure of the Federal Government to honour its pact in the agreement reached with the unions five weeks ago.

The unions had embarked on strike action September last year in order to demand the implementation of the National Industrial Court judgment on the issue of university staff school teachers, payment of earned allowances, payment of shortfalls in salaries and funding of the university system.

The Federal Government through the Minister of Labour, Dr Chris Ngige signed a Memorandum of the term of a settlement between the representatives of the unions and the government which culminated in the suspension of the strike action.

But the unions said the federal government has failed to implement the terms of the agreement between the union and the government that made them suspend the strike action in March.
Durojaye said “I wish to inform the public that as at May 1, the Federal Government has not implemented the agreement freely entered into with the Unions.

“The National executive council of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), will be meeting next week where this issue will be exhaustively discussed and chart a way forward, NASU has taken a position last week at its National Executive Council meeting. ”

Durojaye however, called on the Federal Government to implement the agreement reached with the unions before the three unions embark on strike, saying, this is important before it leads to the total shut down of the nation’s universities.

Osun State Revenue Agency Seals OAU Over 1.8 Billion Tax Debt

By Farombi Oluwaseun

The Osun State Internal Revenue Service (OIRS) has shut down the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, over an alleged non payment of taxes worth  N1.844,770,939.45 to the agency.

The institution was shut by officials of the Revenue Task Force who arrived the campus at about 7:00 on Wednesday morning, May 2,2018

The team was led by Mr Oladipo Babatunde, sealed the Senate building, the administrative block and the bursary, the main gate and Road seven of Quarters but the lecture rooms and hostels were said to have been left untouched by the tax collectors.

The closure of OAU and other establishments in the state followed the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum issued to all affected establishments by the state government.

Mr Babatunde revealed  they had no choice than to seal  since the OAU  management   has refused to meet up with the deadline given to them.

He added that  the money owed is outstanding unremitted PAYE withholding taxes and developments levy which had become due and payable since year 2015 and 2016.

Meanwhile, the school management through the  Public Relations Officer has reacted to the development. Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju,OAU Public Relations Officer confirmed the debt and stated that the debt was inherited from the past administration of the institution.

In his words , "I must add this that the present university administration since 2017 has been paying consistently but the backlog of debt inherited from the past administration is what is causing this little problem.""

He however assured that  the issue will soon be sorted out with the state government.
