OAU’s ASUU Pulls Out Of National Body

The local branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities of Obafemi Awolowo University (ASUU-OAU) has pulled out of the national body.

It also formed a new association, following prolonged faceoff between the national and local chapter of the union.

The OAU chapter’s decision to pull out of the national body was taken at a congress on February 12, which rejected the resolutions of ASUU’s National Executive Council (ASUU-NEC) meeting on the face-off between it and the parent body.

It was learnt that the congress decided “to constitute itself into a branch that is totally independent of NEC, adopt appropriate name and open a new branch account for the check-off dues of its members in this regards”.

This is contained in the local branch’s resolution signed by the chairman of its caretaker committee, Dr Niyi Sunmonu.

Last years, 732 of the 1,371 OAU academic workers wrote the university management to stop payment of their check-off dues to the national body in protest against the way the latter handled the branch’s crisis.

Other reasons given by OAU’s branch to form a new union include the alleged unilateral removal of the elected treasurer by ASUU national president and the alleged transfer of N11 million from OAU branch account to ASUU national account.

The congress noted that the removal of the duly elected treasurer and transfer of the money prompted majority of the members to request that the deduction of their check-off dues to ASUU national body be stopped.

Also, the decision of ASUU’s NEC to accept the suspended and contentious result of the vice chancellor selection and the rejection of the caretaker committee to run the affairs of the union, after the presiding officers had abandoned the congress midway on Thursday, October 20, 2016, which he conveyed, was another reason they pulled out.

ASUU’s OAU has been at loggerhead with the national body over the constitution of a caretaker committee, following the sack of the Dr. Caleb Aborisade-led executives by the congress.

This was the fallout of the cancelled vice chancellor selection by the Federal Government.

ASUU’s national body rejected the sack of Aborisade-led exco but the local branch insisted on Dr. Niyi Summonu-led caretaker committee and stopped the remittance of check-off dues to the national body.

Reacting to ASUU’s NEC meeting of February 3 and 4, which expelled three OAU branch caretaker committee members and the suspension of 13 others, the council rejected the sanctions and passed a vote of confidence on Dr. Summonu-led caretaker committee.

According to the congress resolutions, it reaffirmed its total, unalloyed and unflinching confidence in the caretaker committee and those sanctioned.

The aggrieved OAU academic workers also resolved to constitute an electoral committee to conduct the election of its executives within two weeks and appoint a five-member electoral committee.

Another major decision was the composition of a constitution-drafting committee for the branch for which three members were appointed.

The branch also decided to write the vice chancellor to stop the deduction of check-off dues for lecturers at OAU due to the information that the bursar failed to implement the written requests by some members that the deduction of their check-off dues be stopped.

It was also gathered that ASUU-NEC suspended Aborisade for six months for allegedly misrepresenting NEC, while the Akure zonal coordinator, Dr. Alex Odiyi, was issued a warning letter.

2018 UTME:JAMB to conduct Mock Test On Feb 26

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Sunday said the much anticipated conduct of the 2018 Mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) would now hold on Feb. 26

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin said this in an interview in Lagos.

According to him, a total of 245,753 of the 1,652,795 candidates that registered for this year’s UTME are expected to write the test.

“We are happy to announce to the public that the board has concluded arrangement for the conduct of the mock UTME, slated for Monday, February 26

“This is irrespective of the ongoing strike embarked upon by members of non-academic unions of federal universities nation wide.

“Candidates will soon be informed on when to print notifications for the examination and in addition, notifications will be sent through e-mails and text messages on the schedules of their examination,” Benjamin said.

He explained that the examination was expected to be hitch free because the board had successfully reduced incidences of malfunctioning of computers by electronically integrating the systems to see their functionality and effectiveness through link tests.

“What this means is that, at the end if the exercise, whatever system that is not seen will not be used for the mock examination
The 2018 exercise sold a total of 1, 966,918 candidate generating profiles.

“In previous examinations this number of candidates would have paid for the forms but through our efficient and effective system of ensuring that candidates do not waste resources, we decided to introduce the profile generating regime.

“By this method, candidates will first have to generate personal profiles before proceeding to obtain pins, in between which they are open to deciding whether to go ahead to pay for the registration documents or otherwise,” Benjamin explained.

The main UTME is expected to hold nationwide from March 9 to March 17

OAU Education Students Lament Over The Crappy State Of NUESA SignPost Project

By John Beloved
Reacting to the signpost that has recently been installed  at the entrance of the faculty of education, several students have expressed themselves concerning  recent developments in the  faculty.

While some students appreciate  the effort of the  faculty president  for the signpost creation, others were not completely impressed with it complaining  on what they feel to be profane about the signpost .

As some  students have opined, a rationale for the uprising is the awful standard of a project budgeted with a sum of #160,000 .
Arbitrarily, from the  fund allocated to the project, it was highly anticipated by the students

Although a Committee of 7 was   set up by the president to carry out the project
but the beautiful initiated project could not be called a beautiful done job to the later.

They claimed that materials used in making the project were of low and inferior quality and this was never expected as the project had enough money allocated to it.

In an encounter with  chimdi, a  student of the faculty of Education. He complained bitterly over the awful state of the just completed project "This work is rough   and it has a really low quality, obviously the money spent on this cannot be summed to #50,000
it is funny how the president thinks he can fool the student by presenting such a ridiculous thing to them after getting funds that would sufficiently finance it".

In a release obtained by OAU Peeps News Agency and signed by the association"s  Financial secretary ;Ayoola Ojo Oswa and General secretary; Ayoola Adekunle Isaiah, they ascertained that although a committee was set up  for the project delivery, the President; Fatoyinbo Gafar popularly known as SOCRATES excluded the committee from the planning and execution of the project and further ascertained that Oyebanjo Oluwaseun SIEWEN (Assisitant  Secretary General, Great Ife Students" Union) addressed as his all time adviser was aware of all the bargains made during the project execution.

"""The message we are trying to convey here is that SOCRATES executed the project together with his adviser,SIEWEN and not the committee members and as a result, he only should accept responsibility for whatever discontent NUESITES have with the project. NUESITES  should hold SOCRATES responsible for any form of underestimation or overestimation of the project cost.""- the release stated.

On getting across to  President Fatoyinbo Gafar,  He however refused to comment on the matter.

Legendary Snakes: Nigerians, The Looters Of Their Own

By John Beloved

The astronomical level of corruption and greed in Nigeria has been proven since ancient times.

In recent times, it has been  shown that our long anticipated end to corruption is still a decade ahead of Nigeria.

Even as many Nigerians verbiage affirmatively to themselves as not part of Nigeria corruption, they still dine on a table with corruption depicting this from the occurrences recently dated in the educational sector. It is true when the Nigerian government is called to be corrupt but just to tag corruption with the Nigerian identity as a whole is a big dose.

Having laughed and mocked the beautiful and fascinating animal kingdom story of  a legend Nigeria snake that has stolen from humanity, Philomena  chieshe displayed her high intellectual level as the office clerk of the Joint Admission and matriculation board[JAMB] in makurdi with her story.

Having wondered how ridiculous it was for her to have thought of a folktale as a possibly acceptable pass for the missing money. An inspiring aspect of interest from every curious Nigeria is what in reality happened to the 36million naira.

Investigation following this criminal act has further exposed other fraudulent activities.
The embezzlement of another 23million In Nasarawa state.

As expected, this of course also came with its own tragic soap opera of been engaged  in a car accident which later resulted into a fire outbreak burning all the scratch card in the car on his way to Abuja.
In yobe state, the  JAMB coordinator accuses boko haram  for his inability to account for 613,000 and the kogi state JAMB coordination also blames poverty for the missing 7million in his office.

With all the fairy tales told by the distinct jamb officials  to support their action has revealed interestingly that while we all are crying over the infection of the Nigeria government from the incurable disease gotten from the sting of corruption even the Nigerian citizens have been soiled with impurity and greed.

It should be noted that although a declaration has been made by The Joint Admission Matriculation Board [JAMB]  to ensure that the human snake that swallowed 36milion would be caught and punished like we all are waiting for.

We are the looters of our own self for to use for our exclusive benefit what is not exclusively our is theft.
