Hon. Seun Has To Prove His Eligibility –Ibiyemi

The former Angola Hall Chairman and an aspirant to the post of the Secretary General of the Great Ife Students’ Union during the last elections, Comrade Ibiyemi Joseph has said the much embattled Secretary General-elect of the Union, Oketooto Oluwaseun a.k.a Hon. Seun has to come out to prove his eligibility so as to wash himself clean from the allegations levelled against him.

Ibiyemi who confessed to have had a prior knowledge of this allegation against Hon. Seun even during the election said he did not bring it up then because he had little or no evidence to raise any dust during that time so as not to tarnish his image.

“Though I have been aware of that matter even during the election but I couldn’t do anything due to the fact that I don’t have evidence and I won’t like to tarnish his personality nor challenge his victory”

“...but recently as I went online and I saw the result, I was so baffled and I would have been a coward to see such a thing and not asking questions”

However, Ibiyemi confirmed to us that he has written to the Election Petition Committee to ask Hon. Seun questions about his results for the sake of posterity and sanctity in our Union. Ibiyemi went further to say that despite his urge to know the real truth in the matter on ground; he holds no grudge against Hon. Seun in person because they are friends. He also said he has even accepted Hon. Seun as his Union’s Secretary General but he has to prove to us.

The former Angola Hall Chairman also played down propaganda from some quarters that the 2.5 CGPA minimum requirement was never a Union thing before now and no one should be crucified on that basis.

“A law will always be a law. When we got the form, it was clearly stated that we must meet up to 2.5 and if any candidate does not meet up with that, I am not sure the candidate is qualified. The candidacy is even wrong from the beginning.”

“I could see some people reporting that the 2.5 was forced on us by management, yes, let’s say that but why didn’t they challenge that from the beginning before the election. Why now that these things are coming up that some people are proving that it shouldn’t have been 2.5. No! I won’t support that. He should have known that if he has met up with the requirement, he could have gone for it and if he has not met it, I see no reason why he should not be disqualified.”

In a similar response, Hon. Captain who came second runner up after Ibiyemi for the Secretary General post during the election also said he has concluded plans to challenge Hon. Seun’s eligibility before the Election Petition Committee. This he said owning to nothing but to protect the image of our Union.

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday protested the kidnapping of its members in Ekiti State, and threatened to withdraw their services, if the victims were not rescued by Friday, May 22.

The body lamented that the captors were demanding N210 million as ransom for the release of three out of five members kidnapped at different locations, describing the scenario as frightening and disturbing.

ASUU members, led by Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti chapter chairman, Prof Olufayo Olu-Olu were protesting the kidnapping of Dr Femi Omisore , a lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Dr Folasade Alade of EKSU and Dr. Kikelomo Adegun , wife of the former Chief Medical Director of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti.

Armed with placards with inscriptions like,“ASUU says no to kidnapping,” “kidnapping is a crime against humanity,” “ASUU demands unconditional release of members,” “Ensure safety of lives and property’’, among others, the protesters marched from the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital in Ado Ekiti to the Ewi’s Palace, where they were addressed by Oba Rufus Adejugbe and members of his council.

Decrying the kidnap of his members and their colleagues in the health profession, he urged the government to do all within its powers to rescue the state from sliding into anarchy.

Prof Olufayo said, “This is the same way Boko Haram started in the North. It started like a child’s play, but today, a visit to the North would show the level of callousness and damage the sects have done to the system.

Hon. Seun's Saga: OAU SU PRO-elect Cautioned Over Threats To Journalists

PRESS RELEASE: HONOURABLE SEUN, THE FRAUD ALLEGATION AND IMMANUEL KANT'S THREATS TO JOURNALIST FROM INSIDER NEWS CREW

Exposing painful and hidden realities is our motto and will conthnue to be our motto. Evidence of electoral fraud by OAU SU Sec.Gen Elect reached our desk yesterday very early in the morning, the evidence accused Honourable Seun of having below 2.5 CGPA during the last OAU SU election, which would mean he did not meet one of the requirements for participation in the students' Union election. Anybody below 2.5 CGPA cannot participate in the election.

The evidence revealed that honourable Seun had 2.39CGPA as at the time of the SU elections. Insider sought the reactions of the General Secretary elect and he denied all allegations, saying his political enemies are behind his ordeal,he went to label a top journalist a 'daft' for reporting the allegation. In a democratic setting, should journalists be in prisons, should not we have freedom of information?

The PRO of the union, Immanuel Kant who should know better also has threatened to deal with journalists who write a report about the issue without informing the Students' union, while we put no quantum of magnificence or lay no credence to the PRO threats, it is surprising and unfortunate that in a modernized world of ours,in the age of respect for journalists, the PRO who should be unbiased and even while trying to be the image maker of the union should understand objective reportage would threaten journalists for towing their line of duty.

While we will not condemn honourable Seun as we are not the election petition tribunal or judges of morality,we stand to condemn any form of electoral fraud, at a time when even Nigeria is improving in terms of electioneering processes, should not it be condemnable that OAU SU can't or is perceived to be embedded in allegation of fraud? In the year 1999 Afrika died in the fight for the better Union,we frown at the smallest electoral fraud and if found guilty no matter the height of the position, culprits must be brought to book.

OAU SU Shouldn't be mediocre.

We say no to threats against journalists and Insider will not hesitate to expose painful and hidden realities.

Electoral Commission Cannot Ascertain The Real CGPA Of Students -EC Chairman

The chairman of the Great Ife Students’ Union Electoral Commission, Ikudayisi Johnson Olawale a.k.a Ekiti who was in charge of the 2014/2015 Students’ Union election that gave Oketooto Oluwaseun a.k.a Hon. Seun the mandate to serve as the Union’s Secretary General has come out to say that it is not in the power of the Electoral Commission to ascertain the real CGPA of students during elections as this is the sole duty of the Division of Student Affairs(DSA) of the University.

In response to our questions on the widespread allegation against Hon. Seun’s eligibility to contest the last election, Ekiti insisted that the Commission which he led could not have known the real CGPA of Hon. Seun except if the Division of Students Affairs(DSA) verified that irrespective of the documents submitted by him to the Commission and their own results assessment.

“It is not in our power to determine the final eligibility, underline and capitalize final eligibility of any aspirant to contest any election. If anybody is raising any issue, it is because people lack the explicit knowledge of how the Electoral Commission operates or runs or works”

“It is part of our guidelines that people must contest election with their latest CGPA.”

“What the Electoral Commission does is that, students will be screened, students must obtain their forms and they must submit in conjunction with other documents we requested from them and we will now compile their list and send to the Division of Student Affairs(DSA) for final verification of CGPA.”

“ It is the power of Division of Students Affairs(DSA) to determine the final eligibility of students to contest based on CGPA”
He also explained that there is no way the Electoral Commission can confirm the veracity of result submitted to them except the Division of Student Affairs(DSA) help with it.

“It is even a criminal offence in the first instance to hack into your account to get your CGPA. It is the Division of Student Affairs(DSA) that is saddled with that responsibility and power”

Ikudayisi Johnson a.k.a Ekiti also laid emphasis on the prerogative of the Division of Students’ Affairs(DSA) by citing the instances where the Electoral Commission got letters from the DSA after sending the lists of aspirants vying for various positions in the Hall Executive Council(HEC) and Students Representative Council(SRC) elections that some of them did not meet up with the minimum required 2.5 CGPA and they did not contest as their names did not appear on the ballot papers.

He however said that it was not thesame case for the Central Executive Council(CEC) as the commission did not get any response as to the eligibility of any CEC aspirant based on CGPA from the Division of Student Affairs(DSA), hence, all the aspirants ran unhindered and were qualified.

“On CEC election, up to today, I asked the Secretary of the Commission just now, he told me that up till today that he has not gotten any letter or message as regards those that ran for the CEC election that none of them is ineligible. What that implies is that everybody that ran for CEC election was eligible”

Pressure Mounts On Obama To Attend Buhari’s Inauguration In Person

As the May 29 inauguration of Nigeria’s President-elect and the Vice President-elect draws closer, pressure is mounting on the White House on who to represent the United States at the event.

While the immediate past U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, Johnnie Carson, is asking President Barack Obama to send his deputy, Vice President Joe Biden, to lead the American delegation to the event, a pro-Africa U.S. lobby group in Washington DC and the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans, CANAN are requesting President Obama to attend the event himself.

In a press statement over the weekend Mr. Carson, who had advised Obama as the most senior government official on Africa (after the Secretary of State) until late 2013, however, requested that the U.S. President visit Nigeria in July while heading out to East Africa as already announced.

The U.S. President is not ready yet to announce a delegation to the Nigeria’s presidential swearing-in ceremony on May 29. according to Natalie Wozniak, a White House spokesperson.

But such an announcement is expected in the forthcoming week based on traditional practices by the White House. There has been news reports and claims that Mr. Obama is planning to send a high-powered, presidential scale delegation possibly led by his wife, the VP or the U.S. Secretary of State.
Specifically regarding the Buhari-Osinbajo inauguration, Ambassador Carson noted that “President Obama should send a high level delegation to President Buhari’s inauguration in Abuja on May 29.

According to him, “this delegation should be led by Vice President Joe Biden, who engaged with both President Jonathan and with president-elect Buhari in the run-up to the presidential election.”

Continuing, the former U.S. official said if Mr. Biden “is unable to go, Secretary of State John Kerry, National Security Advisor Susan Rice, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson or Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack should lead the delegation, which should include senior officials from several cabinets departments, including the Department of Defense.”

In a similar vein, CANAN and another leading U.S. group released separate statements outrightly asking the US President to be personally present at the May 29 event in Abuja.

The group-Constituency for Africa- is considered one of the leading organizations in the US “committed to educating and mobilizing the US public on matters pertaining to Africa.”

Its president, Melvin Foote, in the statement argued that “last month, Nigeria completed its election process in a peaceful and transparent manner. While the U.S. applauded this positive feat, our involvement cannot conclude just yet. In fact, in some ways, it is only just beginning — which is why I strongly urge President Barack Obama to attend the inauguration of President-Elect Mohammadu Buhari on May 29.”

He stated that “President Obama’s presence at this historic inauguration would send the right signal at the right time. This election was a landmark victory for democracy in Africa and for struggling people elsewhere around the world, and his participation would make a powerful statement of hope and renewal. Nigeria is in the balance. While it is dealing with a brutal terrorism campaign in the north, and multiple other development challenges elsewhere across the country — still it is the largest economy in a very important part of the world and – is poised to achieve much more in the years ahead.”

CANAN, in its own statement asked Mr. Obama to consider attending the Buhari-Osinbajo inauguration as a means of further spurring the democratic fervour and ferment which is currently at play in the country.

According to the National Secretariat of CANAN, “while with the help of the LORD, Nigerians take the lead in the credit for the successful elections, the role of the US President and government cannot be over-emphasized.

“We remember how President Barack Obama took time to personally record and send an official White House video message to Nigerians ahead of the presidential elections, saying all the right things.
By attending the inauguration personally, Obama will cap the whole affair graciously and end the controversial fallouts of the exclusion of Nigeria in his prior visits to Africa. CANAN wishes the President take a very deep reflection on this matter and add a great spur to the ferment of change that is ongoing in Nigeria by being personally present at the Buhari-Osinbajo inauguration on May 29. It will set a new tone not only in US-Nigeria relations, but in US relationship with Africa as a whole.”

In his statement urging Mr. Obama to visit Nigeria in July when he is scheduled to visit Kenya and Ethiopia, Mr, Carson said “it would be deeply troubling for many Nigerians to see Africa’s largest democracy snubbed at this important moment in its history.

Mr. Carson who advised Obama on Africa all through his first term in office and beyond conceded that “relations between Abuja and Washington have frayed over the past two years, largely over security issues and differences over the handling of Boko Haram.”

He suggested that by sending a high powered delegation to the presidential inauguration in Nigeria and then dropping by in Nigeria on his way to East Africa in July, President Obama can bring about a new beginning between Nigeria and the U.S. with the emergence of the Buhari-Osinbajo presidency.
