Last Year Reduction In OAU School Fees Effected In New Payment Structure

The N3,000 reduction in school fees of Obafemi Awolowo University students following a protest that greeted the astronomical increment in the same fees last year has finally been effected as promised by the university management.

Students of the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Environmental and Design Management and Faculty of Technology will now pay N24,700 as against the N30,700 they paid last year. The University management promised to shed the N3,000 deduction in the fees last year to the payment for the new session (2014/2015 academic session). So the supposed new fees structure payable this new session which is N27,700 eventually got reduced by the N3,000 deduction of last year. Now, the students are expected to pay N24,700.

Also supposed to be affected by this development are students of the College of Health Sciences and Faculty of Pharmacy. Just like the other faculties affected, their students should now pay N27,700 as against the N33,700 they paid the last time. As at the time of filing this report, we are yet to verify the reduction in their own fees.

In the meantime, the school e-portal is now opened for undergraduates to start paying for the 2014/2015 academic session.

It will be recalled that the Ibikunle-led 2013/2014 parliamentary session led the Students' Union to confront the increase in schools fees and in a Press Statement on Sunday, August 23, 2014 counted the further reduction of N3,000 as parts of the gains of the struggle against school fees hike.

Ondo Deputy Governor, Ali Olanusi, Impeached

The Ondo State Deputy Governor, Ali Olanusi, was impeached on Monday morning by members of the state House of Assembly.‎

Twenty two of the 26 members of the Assembly supported the impeachment of the Deputy Governor, who recently moved from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.

The motion for his impeachment was moved by the majority leader, Ifedayo Akinsoyinu, from Ondo West 11 and seconded by Olatunji Dauro from Owo 11‎.

The Speaker, Jumoke Akindele, subsequently ruled that all government property in the custody of the Deputy Governor be retrieved by the Permanent Secretary of the Deputy Governor’s office.

The Assembly had last Tuesday (April 22) served an impeachment notice on Mr. Olanusi.

The Assembly, in the notices signed by 20 of its 26 members, accused the deputy governor of alleged gross misconduct.
Some of the allegations levelled against him include financial misappropriation, absenteeism from official duties and causing disaffection in the state cabinet.

The Majority Leader, Ifedayo Akinsoyinu, representing Ondo West Constituency 2, moved the motion, which was seconded by Yinka Banso, representing Akoko North West Constituency.

The Speaker, Jumoke Akindele, presided over that sitting. The House said its action was in consonance with the 1999 Constitution.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Kunle Olujuigbe, said the process would be transparent. Mr. Olanusi had two days before the March 28 presidential election defected to the All Progressives Congress from the Peoples Democratic Party.

He, alongside his boss, Governor Segun Mimiko, had left the Labour Party, on which platform they were elected, for the PDP.

Only last week, apparently due to his defection to the APC, Mr. Olanusi was assaulted by suspected thugs who tried to stop him from entering the Government House.

Gov. Mimiko Appoints Lasisi Oluboyo As The New Deputy Governor Of Ondo State
