Lectures Resume In Obafemi Awolowo University

Just after about 24 hours of students' resumption back to campus, academic activities have started in most faculties and departments of Obafemi Awolowo University.

Our correspondents visited some faculties today and the visits reflected the eagerness and readiness of both the students and lecturers to be back to the classroom after more than two months of school closure. In the Faculty of Science, students of the Department of Biochemistry were seen receiving BCH303 lecture but when we spoke to one of the students that attended the class, he said the expected attendance of that class was supposed to be more than that. He played than the rumour that students are yet to return back to school but he attributed the low attendance to the preparedness level of the students to start receiving lectures immediately.

Some students had to stay back in their various Halls of Residence in order to settle down as some of them even arrived thesame Monday morning. Full fledged academic activities are however expected to kick start next week Monday.

Security Committee Of The Students' Union Issues Security Alert

The Security Committee of the Students' Union welcomes both fresh and returning students back to the University. Following security investigations carried out on the campus, it is pertinent to inform all and sundry that some hoodlums and criminally minded individuals parading themselves as students have planted themselves on the campus premises with the aim of obtaining students at the early stage of resumption.

Google RISE Awards 2015 Application

Overview

We aspire for students to be creators and not just consumers of tomorrow’s technology, and that includes students of all backgrounds.
Google RISE Awards are grants for organizations across the globe that:

• Promote Computer Science (CS) education
• Run initiatives that reach girls, underrepresented minorities, and students facing socio-economic barriers under age 18 

Eligibility

RISE Award recipients receive:

• Funding: Grants range from $15,000 to $50,000 USD.
• Access to a global network of CS partners: This includes an invitation to the annual RISE Global Summit and participation in the Google+ online community.
• Consultancy with Google experts and volunteers: Learn about technical tools & organizational development over the course of 12 months.

In turn, RISE Award recipients are expected to:

• Report on progress: Demonstrate scale of CS program over one year and keep Google updated on progress by submitting midyear and end of year reports.
• Share resources across the community: Communicate ideas and expertise on CS outreach programs within the global RISE community.

Organizations are eligible to apply if they have a(n):

• Emphasis on CS programs: We fund CS organizations that currently run extracurricular computer science programs or STEM organizations looking to start a computer science outreach program.
• Focus on girls, minorities, low-income students: Programs must target girls and/or underrepresented minority students up to the age of 18. Awards are not open to programs targeting students already enrolled in university or above.
• Regional reach with potential to scale: Programs should have regional reach (city, county or state) with the potential to scale nationally and collaborate internationally with similarly focused organizations.
• New program: Previous RISE awardees may apply if adding a new dimension to former programs or launching a new CS program.

 FAQs

 

Q: Do you provide funding for programs outside of CS?
A: The focus of the RISE Awards program is to support Computer Science initiatives. We do not fund web literacy programs, IT troubleshooting, computer literacy programs or ITC training programs.
Q: Must programs have an explicit computer science component to be eligible? Might a math program which produces a lot of very avid computer scientists be considered a good fit?
A: While our focus is on Computer Science, one goal of the Google RISE awards is to promote interest and excitement in CS fields. If your organization runs STEM outreach programs and you would like to add a CS component, you are eligible.
Q: Are RISE applicants required to have a 501c3 status? Are there other formal requirements like being an established organization listed somewhere?
A: Outside of the US, RISE applicants do not need to have 501c3 status but do need to be a not-for-profit organization. In the US, if you are not 501c3, you must have a fiscal sponsor. If you do not have 501c3 status or a fiscal sponsor in the US, you are not eligible for a RISE grant.
Q: Can university student organizations apply for funding?
A: Yes, however you must have a computer science faculty or staff adviser participate in the application process and included as a contact if you have not had extensive involvement in CS/STEM outreach programs. Please include contact information in your written proposal. The program being run must be aimed at K-12/Primary or Secondary School students aged 7-18.
Q: Does receiving an award one year guarantee funding for the following year?
A: No. But applicants and selected partners are welcome to apply annually for a RISE Award.
Q: Can faculty apply as part of the institution if the institution is considered a tax-exempt, non-profit organization?
A: Yes, faculty can apply as long as they are applying on behalf of the non-profit organization.
Q: Is an institution allowed to submit more than one application at a time for a Google RISE grant?
A: No. An institution is currently allowed to submit one application per RISE cycle. However, if you have multiple organizations within the University, they can apply separately for the award should their strategies and goals vary.
Q: Is the program limited to applicants from the United States?
A: No, the program is open to most countries around the globe. For a full list of eligible countries, please see our eligibility criteria here.
Q: We are an elementary/middle/high school. Do we qualify for the Google RISE Awards?
A: Courses/programs targeting elementary/middle/high school students are eligible for funding if they have a reach wider than just one or two schools. Keep in mind that we do not fund courses or programs that are eligible for college credit.

Q: Can I receive feedback on my application?
A: Unfortunately, the RISE team is unable to provide feedback on individual applications.
Q: When will you announce the awards?
A: We announce the 2015 Award recipients in December 2014.
Q: Is it mandatory for recipients to account for monies spent after being awarded funding?
A: Yes, it is mandatory for recipients to provide a written account for monies spent and impact had throughout the year.
Q: How many applications were received last year? And how many organizations were funded in prior years?
A: As you can imagine, we get several inquiries about RISE applications and to remain fair we do not consult or comment on the status of an organization. Also, due to both legal and privacy concerns we do not publish statistics regarding our awards publicly, however you may read about previously awarded organizations on the Award Recipient tab on this site.

OAU SU PRO Enjoins Students To Be On The Alert

Consequent upon demands from Great IFE students for an in-depth explanation of my last update and the reactions that trailed it. I decided to put this up to clear the air on all doubts and propaganda eversince raised through the letters of the update.

The most controversial statement being the last caption which reads "Great IFE BEWARE!!! was a call to maintain our alertness as the University management is trying to witch-hunt student leaders for fighting against the destruction of the destiny of vast majority of Nigerian children who have been left incapacitated by their poor condition.

The update has also been attacked through the statement that the updated development is an indication that the struggle has taken another dimension was to put students on the alert still that the University management has begun to raise tissues out of issues to distract both the Union and the studentry. It is therefore neccessary that we be on the alert and remain focused. The management that suspended and rusticated students today can tomorrow raise greater things and only our level of preparedness will help us to fight well against it. The struggle against increment in OAU fees was that which caught majority unawares and therefore rendered it a bit difficult to handle at its inception. It remains the duty of the Union especially the office of the PRO to put students on the alert.

I wish to state at this point that all media mischief makers and unrepentant propaganda peddlers should please desist from such acts as this will not be of any help to the struggle at any time or phase we find ourselves. The maintenance of peace with justice I believe should be our ultimate goal at this crucial period in history.

JAMB 2014/2015 Admission Status To Be Available Online Next Week

Jamb admission list/status verification for 2014 available from next week. The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Dibu Ojerinde have announced to the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates that they would know their 2014/2015 admission status by next week.

He urged them to check the jamb portal on the internet next week to confirm their proper placement in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

Ojerinde also said that no fewer than 700, 000 candidates would secure admission into tertiary institutions for the 2014/2015 academic session recalling that about 1.6 million candidates sat for the examination, comprising the Paper-Pencil Test (PPT), Dual Based Test (DBT) and the Computer-Based Test (CBT) last April and May.

According to him, the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the National Commission of Colleges of Education (NCCE) have this year increased the carrying capacity of the schools under their superintendence.

As a reminder, it has also become imperative to stress once more, that all admissions for the 2014/ 2015 academic session will end on Friday, October 31, 2014. All institutions are hereby enjoined to adhere to the stipulated date, as late submissions will not be entertained.

Life Returns To OAU Campus As Power And Water Supplies Are Restored

Life has finally returned to Obafemi Awolowo University campus after two months of closure by its Management. The Halls of Residence visited by our correspondents today showed the rate of students influx into the campus remains low since the past 48 hours which is very unusual whenever resumption is announced. The reason for this may not be unconnected to the lack of Power and Water supplies in the Halls of Residence before now.

Power was restored early this morning in the Halls at exactly 10:43am while Water supply was restored in Fajuyi Hall specifically some minutes before the Power restoration. However, before now, the academic area of the university community was not part of the black out experienced.

The University Management has earlier announced the 24th of August as the set date for resumption of academic activities.

This is to inform the general public that the PRESSID Implementation Committee invites application from suitably qualified members of the public to the third edition of the scholar ship award scheme (2015/2016 academic session).

About PRESSID

As part of efforts to achieve the goals of Vision 20:2020 and the Transformation Agenda, the Federal Government of Nigeria plans to develop a critical mass of professionals who would serve as catalysts of change and agents of scientific and technological advancement, as well as sustainable economic development. This would be achieved through the sponsorship of outstanding students for postgraduate studies in the top 28 universities in the world. To this end, the Federal Government has instituted the Presidential Special Scholarship Scheme for Innovation and Development.

Eligibility Criteria for PRESSID

Interested candidates should:

1. Be graduates from the 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 academic sessions, who would have completed their National Youth Service by October 2014;
2. Have obtained First Class Honours degree from any recognised and approved University in the following disciplines and aim at postgraduate degrees in the specified and allied disciplines:

Sciences: Nuclear Physics, Operations Research, Industrial Chemistry, Quantitative Genetics, etc
Basic Medical Sciences: Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Biochemistry, etc;
Special Aspects of Biology: Biometrics, Molecular Biology, etc;

Economics: Econometrics, Development Economics, etc;

Engineering and Technology: Aeronautical Engineering, Mechatronics, Metallurgy, Material Science and Production Engineering, Nanotechnology, Cyber-Security, Software Engineering, etc;

Medicine: Oncology, Human Genetics, Hepatology, Nuclear Medicine, Geriatrics, etc;

Exceptions

*In the case of Medicine, candidates must have a minimum of 2 Distinctions in their Part 3 and Part 4 MBBS examinations; In all cases, candidates must:
be below 30 years of age by October 2014;
be computer literate; and
be ready to be bonded and to work, preferably, as academic staff in any public university or research institute for a minimum period of five (5) years.
