The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University through the office of the Director of works has come out with a public release stating that there would be power outage on campus on Saturday, 10th and Sunday, 11th September 2016.
According to the release, the outage is due to a maintenance service that would be carried out by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company at Osogbo. However, there are also speculations that the planned maintenance may also affect the generality of Ife as Osogbo is the general distributor of electricity of the town.

Maintaining In Maintenance: The Bodypreneurs And Entrepreneurs
Having known some basic truths about life in Maintainance, let us further dive into life at Maintenance and guess what? It is about the 'Entrepreneurs and Bodypreneurs.'
Alongside learning in a strenuous environment, the entrepreneurs are the students who earn money on the side by putting to practice acquired skills like make-up art, hairdressing, catering and the likes. Most of these ones in order to live in Maintenance, do all these to maintain themselves.
I can say only a few of these enterprising ladies do their businesses with zest, also meeting the demands of their academics while some engage in the businesses much to the detriment of their academics.
Now ' the Bodypreneurs!'
Hmmmmn...'The Bodypreneurs,' the ones who earn their living with what they "possess" their bodies! They are the queens of the night, especially the ones who uphold the 'T.G.I.F.' slogan. Dressed up the most on Friday nights, they attend parties, clubs, hotels, bars and restaurants attending to the trade of the moonlight, giving what they have in exchange for money and even sometimes, for grades.
'The Bodypreneurs' are the commodities which the 'big boys' in their big cars come to buy with the luxury of money and gifts. They take pride in what they do; selling themselves for the goods which the body can buy.
Seeing their cars and lifestyles, one will travel in thoughts and wonder how rich their parents must be, oblivious of the fact that "the bodypreneur" acquired everything by enjoining her body with that of a male acquaintance locked up in houses and closets.
'Bodypreneurs' sometimes travel to distant places. I heard from a very close friend of mine who had a roomate who once travelled to Abuja in order to engage in this business and did it well. They stop at no length to get what they want. Of course, majority of the people engaged in this business, do it to the detriment of their studies.
They see themselves as the most enlightened of all who stay in maintenance. People call them the 'big girls'. There is a price to pay in other to get them, all these involves wooing, coaxing, gifts, physical appearance, and to crown it all, Money.
Just like a proverb says that "Money is power, with it most things are possible", also do not forget that "somethings can be sweet but bitter". Consider the sweetness of honey and the sting of the honeybees.
Remember, everything boils down to our choices. Let's make the right choices. In the meantime, I will keep Maintaining in Maintenance... Much love.

Positive Reviews Trail IfeLaw's "Beyond The Bar"
It is no longer news that the Law Students Society one of the nation's foremost Law faculty, IfeLaw, in equipping its members organized a two day Conference between 2nd to 3rd September, 2016. The conference had in attendance the creme de la creme of the society.
The conference, tagged Legal Career Opportunities Conference LCOC and themed Beyond the bar, had in attendance representatives from the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Bayo Adaralegbe from Babalakin $ Co., Mr Adedeji Adeyinka and other hotshots, both in the legal and business world.
Contentious and vital topics such as Arbitration, Mortgage Business, Entrepreneurship, Impact of the ICT on the legal profession, Curriculum Vitae and Cover Letter Writing to mention but a few were expertly discussed by the truly competent speakers. Participants also seemed very much interested in the sessions as germaine questions were asked and answered during the course of the conference.
After a successful two days conference, Beyond the bar came to a close with an exquisite dinner. Dr. Orifowomo, a recently appointed judge of The Gambia's Court of Appeal who until his appointment was a senior lecturer at the Law Faculty was also honoured and celebrated at the dinner.

DSA Annuls All Faculty Elections, Orders Fresh Elections
The Division of Students Affairs, Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-ife has annulled the elections held by Faculties to select candidates who would represent them on the proposed committee by Division to assist in the process of reinstating the Students Union. The annulment was as a result of a number of irregularities noticed in the Electioneering processes of some Faculties.
In a communique also released by the Association of Campus Journalists, OAU, she has also come out to clear the air on the alleged misinformation that was said to have trailed the Association's communique on the first meeting. The association, which was also present at the meeting, was informed that there were some modifications to the proceedings of the meeting after it ended which led to the discrepancies in outcome of the Meeting by the several bodies in attendance especially as regards the representatives from the Faculties eventually becoming Election and Election Petition Committee members.
However, the Division of Students Affairs, has also stated that a new election would be carried out next Thursday across all Faculties which would be adequately supervised.

2016 Batch 'B' Pre-Mobilization Workshop Begins
In the mean time, NYSC has said its attention has been drawn to some dates being peddled around as the time for the start of registration for the 2016 Batch 'B' Corps.
"The attention of the Management of the National Youth Service Corps has been drawn to information circulating in the internet directing prospective corps members to commence online registration for the 2016, Batch 'B' orientation course on 8th September, 2016.
"Management wishes to inform all prospective corps members, parents, guardians and the general public, that no date has yet been fixed for the 2016 Batch 'B' orientation course.
"The information did not emanate from the NYSC website, but the handiwork of scammers, whose intention is most likely to defraud unsuspecting prospective corps members and the general public.
"As soon as Management comes up with the date for the forthcoming orientation course, this would be made known to all those concerned through our normal channels of communication.
"We enjoin all prospective corps members to disregard the announcement in question, and wait for the correct information on the next orientation course which will soon be made known from our official platforms. For further information, kindly check our portal and websites: www.nysc.gov.ng & www.nysc.org.ng" the Management of NYSC warned.

Buhari’s Reign: Dante’s Comedy or Marx’s Farce?
By Pope Jay with Gracious Egedegbe
Man has always been interested in predicting the future. Although this is entirely impossible, there are instances in which he still tries to predict as accurate as possible, expected events and turnouts. Weather forecasts, stock market predictions, scientific hypothesis and sport betting are instances in which man has continually depended on predictions and likely events to acquire knowledge that, in turn, inform choices and decisions.
One major approach in prediction is the studying of past trends and facts and comparing findings and results on any given issue with special focus on conditions and factors that may have changed over time. This essay will use that same approach to answer the question that doubles as the title of this article. To do that fully, we must understand the peculiarities of Buhari’s earlier reign, draw similarities and differences between that reign and his present, and draw conclusions from our findings.
Muhammadu Buhari is someone that needs no introduction in the context of the Nigerian political area. He served in both military and civilian governments. He actively participated in the countercoup of July 1976 that ousted General Aguiyi Ironsi and the July 30, 1975 coup that overthrew General Yakubu Gowon. In 1975, he was appointed Governor of the defunct North-Eastern State by the then Head of State General Murtala Muhammed; an office he occupied until the state was split into Bauchi, Borno and Gongola States in 1976.
In March 1976, General Olusegun Obasanjo, assigned him as the Federal Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources; sequel to that, he became the first Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). In 1984, he became Head of State after the military coup that overthrew President Shehu Shagari in December 1983.
His military tenure lasted for about a year and eight months; during which, according to reports, the socioeconomic state of the country was nothing to write home about. Corruption was rife in the country; inflation was as high as 17.82%; crude oil price, a major source of foreign exchange, was dwindling and a massive 77.2% of graduates were unemployed.
To deal with these issues, Buhari introduced policies to revamp the economy, stem the tide of corruption and reinstitute social ethics in the populace. Amongst the policies were cutbacks on national expenditure and reduction of imports. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) advised him to devalue the naira and he responded by severing ties with them. This move greatly reduced Nigeria’s access to loans. He also stopped capital projects, replaced the Nigerian currency and encouraged importation of raw materials need in the agriculture and related industries. To deal with widespread indiscipline, he launched the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) program. By the end of his tenure, about 500 politicians, office holders and businessmen had been jailed in his campaign against corruption.
However, his policies have often been a source of debate as regarding the effects on the Nigerian economy and the masses in particular. Amongst the negative effects are the astronomically rise in cost of living resulting in poor standard of living; mass retrenchment, particularly in the civil service; rampant reports of civil right violations and clampdown on the press. The coup plotters that overthrew him in August 1985 would later cite the aforementioned as justifications for their military action.
An alternative narrative will be that the coup plotters were spurred to action to prevent Buhari’s anti-graft campaign from exposing their illicit actions and resulting wealth. Notwithstanding, there is no gainsaying that by the end of Buhari’s military tenure, his policies fell short of revamping the Nigerian economy as far as the common man is concerned.
On May 29 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari was officially sworn into office with great optimism that he would be the much needed ‘messiah’. As it were, although Nigeria now operates a democratic government, the problems of corruption, inflation, rising cost of living, falling crude oil price and employment still linger. In addition, between the end of his military regime and his election as a democratic president, insecurity, terrorism and militancy added to the problems of the Nigerian society.
Nigerian ex-president, Olusegun Obasanjo, on the 11 of June 2015 according to News24, while addressing Southwestern women leaders, stated that current faults in the Nigerian system could not be amended in just four years. He admonished Nigerians to cultivate endurance and patience as it would take a while for the newly elected president to deliver on the much-expected (positive) change. Even now, loyalists and optimists have argued that the current hardship prevalent in the country is a necessary price to pay for good things to come.
From the foregoing, it would seem that, like Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, Nigeria will have to go through an inferno to be purged of her faults before she can become the paradise we all want her to be. Hopefully, that would be a true representation of the Nigerian situation.
However, on a second thought, Nigeria current travails could just be a repetition of the Buhari’s military regime; as in the words of Karl Marx: “History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce”
