Falconets Tear Korea DPR Apart To Reach FIFA U-20 World Cup FInal

Asisat Oshoala scored four times as Nigeria reached the final with a thumping 6-2 victory over Korea DPR in the highest-scoring semi-final ever seen at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. Oshoala also laid on two more goals in a win that leaves the Super Falconets to face either France or Germany on Sunday at Montreal's Olympic Stadium, and the North Koreans to play for third place at the same venue.

Nigeria have had a tendency to score quick goals during their time at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014, and Courtney Dike continued that trend with a goal barely more than a minute after kick-off. Oshoala set the tone by setting it up, releasing Dike in behind Korea DPR’s captain Choe Sol-Gyong before the No8 expertly picked her spot just inside the far post. At the half-way point of the first period, Oshoala doubled Nigeria’s lead, capitalising on a poor touch from centre-half Song Kyong-Hui before rounding the keeper and passing into an open goal.

Less than ten minutes later, Ri Un-Sim – arguably the North Koreans’ most dangerous attacker throughout the tournament – pulled one back with a great bit of individual skill after receiving a long ball from midfield. Ri beat two defenders on the cutback and finished past Sandra Chiichii with a powerful shot into the top corner. From there, Korea DPR looked inspired in search of an equaliser but the score remained 2-1 at half-time before Nigeria swiftly put the game out of reach within minutes of the restart.

In similar fashion to her appearance and goal in the quarter-finals against New Zealand, Uchechi Sunday came on as a substitute and within a minute scored to restore her team's two-goal lead. Oshoala then put the game out of reach on the hour mark when she hit a stunning shot from 20 yards out that left Kim with no chance as it flew into the top corner.

Korea DPR had one last glimmer of hope two minutes later when Ugo Njoku handled the ball in her own area, allowing Jon So-Yon to score from the penalty spot. However, Oshoala’s quality shone through yet again in the 68th minute when she completed her hat-trick, beating Song and winning a foot race with Kim to once more fire into an empty net.

Nigeria were not finished there, though, and with five minutes from time the No4 matched the number on her jersey. The goal came as a result of another North Korean defensive miscue less than six yards from goal, resulting in a simple tap-in.

Oshoala had taken the wind out of the Korean sails far earlier in the match and when the final whistle sounded, her Nigerian team-mates surrounded her in celebration, while Hwang Yong-Bong's side trudged off disconsolately.

Every System Of Government Will Work In Nigeria -Hon. Israel

Fagbemigun Israel is the newly inaugurated Senate President of the National Association of Ondo Students (NAOSS). In this interview with Campusbeats, the 400-Level student of the Department of Microbiology, Obafemi Awolowo University, speaks on national and domestic legislative issues. Excerpts

What is the role of the legislative arm in fostering unity among students?

As popularly known, we are law makers, but our roles go beyond making laws. We are to check the activities and official responsibilities of the executives and are also expected to offer support appropriately where necessary, especially in activities that strengthen our unity. All these responsibilities at the students’ arm of legislature is all in a bid to foster continued unity and development for the entire students’ populace.

Student unionism over time has become a means for some student leaders to access money from politicians. What is your take on this?

I totally disagree with that, but the act is conspicuously obvious and very abysmal. It is a product of lack of leadership orientation on the part of those in position. I as a student and the Senate president will always frown at such act. Though I agree that it exists, it is not universal.

Can politics among students be free of corruption?

Yes it can, with the proper mentality and that will only happen if we all search for, and get the correct orientation through periodic reading and review of our political activities. Students engaging in politics should embrace the spirit of sincerity of purpose.

Which would you recommend for Nigeria — the presidential or parliamentary system of government?

In my own view, neither is bad. It is not the system of government that matters, but the leadership charisma and the sincerity of purpose on the path of those at the helms of affairs. Nigeria will thrive well on any system of government if its citizens allow it.

What in your view is the solution to the unending rivalry and superiority clash between the executive and legislative arms of government?

The solution is actually not as complex as most people think. It only requires that a legislator recognises the office of an executive and respectfully carry out the function of check-mating his activities. On the other hand, an executive willingly presents himself with all respect for scrutiny. Whenever the law is respected and checks and balances observed, tension will be reduced within the polity.

How did you start student politics and which posts have you held before now?

I started by paying rapt attention to public discussions on OAU campus and in the country at large. In the long-run, my attention got shifted to political issues and that was how it started. I developed interest in changing things for better in public leadership by seeking political power.

In my first semester while in 100-Level, I contested for the post of the class representative and I lost. Also in the second semester, I contested for the office of the Assistant General Secretary of my faculty and lost again, but by the grace of God and the effort of men around me, I have contested for 16 other political offices after then and I have won all.

As regards the posts held before, I was the local government coordinator, ‘Ribadu For President’ campaign team in Ondo State in the 2011 electioneering campaign. I was the P.R.O of the National Union of Ikale Students, OAU chapter in 2012, I was also an honourable member of my faculty Student’s Association Parliament for three years, during which I served on several house committees like Chairman of the Project Monitoring Committee, secretary of the Audit Committee to mention but a few. I was also privileged to serve as the General Secretary of NAOSS in OAU and later became president in the 2012/2013 session.

Another OAU Shut Down Beckons: We May Return Home Soon

Another OAU Shut Down Beckons: We may return home soon

 Great Ife be warned!

As we prepare for resumption, we must all know that it is not impossible for us to return home quick. You are surprise? Oh! You want to ask why? Basically because of Ebola  Virus Disease amid other reasons.

If care is not taken we will be sent home not by the school management but by the Federal Government because of EVD. We have not resumed fully and students have started creating panic about Ebola on campus. Why? You must realise that any rumour about EVD on OAU campus can easily be believed by any one because of the massive presence of bats, which is believed to be one of the major carriers of EVD.

Most of us may think the federal government is not taking the issue serious but occurrences have shown that EVD is not a child's play. If FG can ask all primary and Secondary Schools not to resume because of EVD, what ll take it to indefinitely shut down OAU. It won't be easy to reopen if closed by FG at all..the conditions for reopening will definitely be stiffer.

Let us be very careful with the kind of jokes we crack, kind of things we post, confirm every rumour before spreading it; we need to graduate on time; the image of OAU must be our concern. Or how will you feel to read/listen/watch on national newspapers/Radio/TV that 'Federal Government closes OAU over Ebola'?... Please let us be careful.

Please use the SHARE button to Re-broadcast if you care about graduating on time and saving OAU's image
