Students To Face Panel Over Bed Space Racketeering

In what seems to be a clampdown on suspected students involved or trying to be involved in accommodation (bed space) racketeering, they will have to face an Investigative or Disciplinary Panel as the case may be once the school resumes next week over the matter.

The information reaching us has it that these students may have been linked with Bed Space illegality in one way or the other. Those affected include students that have in one time or the other posted on Social Media (Facebook, Twitter and others) requesting for sellable bedspaces or offering one for sale.

One of those affected by this development who pleaded anonymity lamented the clampdown and blamed his inability to secure a bed space as a Returning student in any of the Halls of Residence as the reason for his interest in buying any one available for sale. Another student who was already notified of his suspected involvement who reacted to it said he never had the intention to buy or sell bed space at any point in time. He described the accusation as an attempt by the Management to frustrate and indict some selected students that were actively involved in the recent struggle against the school fees hike.

In messages that have been posted to some of the suspected students by the Deputy Dean, Divisions of Students' Affairs(DSA), their names have been compiled and they would soon have their letters from the Registrar.

OAU Fee Hike Novella (Episode 11)

Tunde woke up two hours later and discovered that no one was left the room. He went to the bathroom to take his bathe and cooked out of the little rice he had left. After eating, he decied to leave the room and take a walk, how i wish Similoluwa was here,i would have been able to talk to her, he thought. While walking he saw guys still arguing and shouting on top of their voices, they were discussing about the increase in the stalites fee. We will fight this oppression to the end, the guys said. Tunde ignored the argument and still walked further, when Similoluwa called his Phone. Hey dear, how are you? Similoluwa asked. Am good, am just bothered, Tunde went ahead to explain what was going on to Similoluwa, I just hope they reduce the fee because right now am just fed up. Don't worry, I will help you the little way i can,we will make everything work,Similoluwa consoled Tunde. They talked for few more minutes before Similoluwa bade him goodbye.

Tunde felt very relaxed after receiving this call and soon after he was his jovial self,he got to Anglo-Moz car park and saw freshers lining in front of the Angola and Mozambique Halls of Residence still presenting their documents to the portals, so they could gain entrance into their respective rooms. He stayed at AngloMoz for a while before leaving for the Awolowo hall of residence. He got to his room and unlike what happened in the morning he was jovial, everybody who witnessed the behaviour he put up in the morning were surprised.

The next events happened during the orientation program organized by the OAU SU...

I Will Shake Nigeria After 2015 Elections – Oba Akiolu

The Oba of Lagos, Rilwanu Akiolu, on Monday vowed to make startling revelations that will shake the country after the 2015 general election.

Akiolu’s outburst at the public presentation of a book: “Corruption and Human Rights Law in Africa,” authored by Dr. Kolawole Olaniyan was in response to a statement credited to the Ooni of Ife, ‎Oba Okunade Sijuade, that only two out of the country’s renowned monarchs are free of corruption.

Akiolu said he would reveal top secrets that cannot be disputed by those who think their hands are clean, but refused to give further details when approached after the event.

He lambasted the monarch who alleged that he lifted oil and collected contract during the late Gen. Sani Abacha regime, noting that he was a serving policeman in that era.

On the issue of corruption, Akiolu said over 90 percent of Nigerians are corrupt, adding that the way out was for all hands to be on deck.

“I will shake this nation after the election in February. The man who made the statement that I lifted oil should cover his face in shame because I was still a serving police officer. Those who collected Abacha money know themselves and I will quote witnesses.

“Let us stop apportioning blames, forget the past and work towards a better future for this country.

“Do not put 100 percent blame on President Goodluck Jonathan because the person who caused the problem knows himself,” said Akiolu.

Continuing, the monarch reassured that elections cannot be rigged in Lagos, adding that Lagosians were fully prepared to ensure that their votes and good governance count‎.

“Nigeria’s problem is not caused by one person. We should be closer to God and make things better. We must assist the government to end the challenges of insurgency and Ebola,” he said.

Meanwhile, chairman of the occasion, Femi Falana (SAN) and All Progressives Congress’ (APC) spokesman, Lai Mohammed, accused President Jonathan of fuelling corruption by romancing his appointees accused of corrupt practices.

Falana while acknowledging that the present administration has recorded a milestone in recovering over $2.9 billion of Abacha’s loots, noted that the government was yet to account for the whereabouts of the funds.

‎Commending the author for a great job, Falana said corruption has crept into all facets of national life, noting that the government has not treated the issue of Ebola or insurgency in accordance with the law.

“The author ‎looked at the issues of corruption and human rights in Africa and wonderfully linked them. Human rights are not respected because of massive corruption on the continent.

“The government is not addressing the Ebola crisis under the law. There is a Quarantine Act‎ enacted in 1926, which says carriers of dreadful diseases should be fished out and quarantined.

“But at the moment, we do not know how many people are affected in the country.

“Also, Boko Haram is being fought in a corrupt way. All dead soldiers’ names are unknown, immediately a soldier dies, his family is ejected from the barracks within two weeks.

“Jonathan’s administration has killed the good works against corruption. It is only the Abacha family that has been harassed of all those accused of corruption and it is because he is no longer alive.

“No country has succeeded in receiving loot like Nigeria. We have done well in tracing the over 140 Abacha bank accounts across the world and we have recovered $2.9 billion although we cannot trace the recovered money,” said Falana

EPL: Arsenal, Chelsea, LIverpool Win Opener As United Looses

The English Premier League hardly starts a season without a stunner. Manchester United was at the receiving end as they suffered a 2-1 defeat in the hands of the low rated Swansea City in their first week game for the 2014/2015 league season. Rooney's equalizer later in the game was not sufficient to earn the Red Devil a point at least as a second goal from Swansea's Ki Yung-Seung was enough to give the visiting side the deserved win.

Timetable for ICT Training For Fresh Undergraduate Students

The pivotal role of the university in producing the levels of human capital required for countries to succeed in the globalised ‘information economy’ has been expressed in terms of higher education’s ability to provide the labour market with information-aware and information-adept graduates. Developments in multimedia, increased communications and other ICT innovations are obviously key components of the information economy. Thus, it is imperative for the Obafemi Awolowo University that prides itself as the leading ICT University in Nigeria to empower her students.

The ICT training for fresh undergraduate students aims to impart basic ICT skill into the students right from the onset of their educational career in OAU. New ICT initiatives are being introduced to the University. These include: student e-mail services, smart classrooms, multimedia driven lecture delivery, intra-university voice communication ‘Keedu’, increasing online engagement, course registration, TCC project, e-assessment, inter-university online collaboration (OAU and UNILAG) and techno-preneurship. These are in addition to various existing services such as online meetings and interviews via telepresence and videoconference, advanced search, e-library, internet access etc.

These services require basic ICT skill to navigate and derive maximum benefit. The purpose of this training is therefore to educate the newly admitted students on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as they will continue to apply the skills acquired from the training throughout their stay in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and after their first degree education. The training attracts its own ‘Certificate of Participation’ therefore eliminating the need for the students to patronise road side computer schools after graduation in desperate search for certificate of computer training which today is a pre-requisite for job placement in most organisations.

The first batch of the training commences this session. Fresh undergraduate students are advised to check below for the training timetable.
