EPL: Arsenal, Chelsea, LIverpool Win Opener As United Looses

The English Premier League hardly starts a season without a stunner. Manchester United was at the receiving end as they suffered a 2-1 defeat in the hands of the low rated Swansea City in their first week game for the 2014/2015 league season. Rooney's equalizer later in the game was not sufficient to earn the Red Devil a point at least as a second goal from Swansea's Ki Yung-Seung was enough to give the visiting side the deserved win.

Elsewhere, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City all opened the season's campaign on a winning note.

Timetable for ICT Training For Fresh Undergraduate Students

The pivotal role of the university in producing the levels of human capital required for countries to succeed in the globalised ‘information economy’ has been expressed in terms of higher education’s ability to provide the labour market with information-aware and information-adept graduates. Developments in multimedia, increased communications and other ICT innovations are obviously key components of the information economy. Thus, it is imperative for the Obafemi Awolowo University that prides itself as the leading ICT University in Nigeria to empower her students.

The ICT training for fresh undergraduate students aims to impart basic ICT skill into the students right from the onset of their educational career in OAU. New ICT initiatives are being introduced to the University. These include: student e-mail services, smart classrooms, multimedia driven lecture delivery, intra-university voice communication ‘Keedu’, increasing online engagement, course registration, TCC project, e-assessment, inter-university online collaboration (OAU and UNILAG) and techno-preneurship. These are in addition to various existing services such as online meetings and interviews via telepresence and videoconference, advanced search, e-library, internet access etc.

These services require basic ICT skill to navigate and derive maximum benefit. The purpose of this training is therefore to educate the newly admitted students on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as they will continue to apply the skills acquired from the training throughout their stay in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and after their first degree education. The training attracts its own ‘Certificate of Participation’ therefore eliminating the need for the students to patronise road side computer schools after graduation in desperate search for certificate of computer training which today is a pre-requisite for job placement in most organisations.

The first batch of the training commences this session. Fresh undergraduate students are advised to check below for the training timetable.

OAU, UNILORIN Claim Nigerian Best University

The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State and the University of Ilorin, Kwara State have differed on which is the best university in Nigeria. While OAU is claiming to be the best, pointing to a ranking by Cybermetrics Lab-CSIC, based in Spain, UNILORIN is backing its position with a ranking carried out by the International Colleges and Universities Web Ranking.

According to OAU Public Relations Officer, Mr. Biodun Olarewaju, the university has been for fourth consecutive times ranked first in Nigeria.

Olarewaju said, “According to the latest ranking released in July, 2014 on its website: http//www.webometrics.info/en/africa/nigeria, OAU has been adjudged to have continuously recorded excellence in its area of research, academic, university governance and extensive deployment of ICT for its operations.

“This is the first time that any Nigerian university would be so ranked and rated the first and the best for four times running, bringing to rest any contention from any quarter.

But, a statement by the UNILORIN Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogu, said the university was adjudged best in Nigeria.

According to him, the university is also 20th best university in Africa and 1,842nd in the world in the 2014 University Web Ranking.

He said the result of the ranking conducted by International Colleges and Universities was released on July 29, 2014.

NYSC: Important Update For OAU 2014 Batch B Members

The Vice Dean of OAU Division of Students' Affairs, Dr Yinka Adesina said the "NYSC Exception Certificates for Batch B 2014 are ready for collection at DSA."

CBN Re-introduces ATM N65 Cash Withdrawal Charges

Banks customers will from September 1, 2014 pay a token for cash withdrawals made on other banks’ Automated Teller Machines, the Central Bank of Nigeria said in a directive released on Wednesday.

The re-introduction of the ATM charges came almost two years after the CBN and the Deposit Money Banks cancelled the N100 ATM charge in December 2012.

The new directive for the reintroduction of the charge was posted on the CBN website, but instead of N100 per withdrawal, customers using other banks’ ATMs will now pay N65.

According to the order, which was contained in the circular signed by the Director, Banking and Payment Systems Department, CBN, Mr. Dipo Fatokun, the central bank and the DMBs agreed to re-introduce the ATM charges because the cost of transaction was becoming too burdensome for the banks to continue to bear.

Fatokun also said the charge would become effective on the fourth ATM withdrawal in a month, thus making the first three withdrawals on other banks’ ATMs within the month free.

The circular dated August 13, 2014, read, “The CBN hereby issues the following directives: The re-introduction of ‘Remote-on-us’ ATM cash withdrawal transaction fee, which will now be N65 per transaction, to cover the remuneration of switches, ATM monitoring and fit-notes processing by acquiring banks; the new charge shall apply as from the fourth ‘Remote-on-us’ withdrawal (in a month) by a cardholder, thereby making the first three ‘Remote on us’ transaction free for the cardholder, but to the paid by the issuing bank.

“September 1, 2014 shall be the effective date for the implementation of the new charge; banks are expected to conduct adequate sensitisation to the customers on the introduction of the new fee; all ATM cash withdrawals on the ATM of issuing banks shall be at no cost to the cardholder.”

The CBN, in collaboration with the Bankers’ Committee, had in December 2012 transferred the payment of the N100 fee on ‘Remote-on-us’ ATM cash withdrawal transactions to the issuing banks.

The fee was shared between the acquiring bank, issuing bank and switch companies at the commencement of the arrangement.

However, Fatokun, in the latest circular, noted that issuing banks had during the commencement of the arrangement in 2012 decided to waive the issuer fee of N35, which should ordinarily have been an income to them.

He further said, “Consequently, banks only bore the cost of N65 each time their customers use another banks’ ATMs.

“However, as a result of the unintended consequences of the decision, which has resulted in substantial cost burden incurred by banks in defraying the cost of the service, the payment structure for card carrying bank customers is hereby reviewed in line with present realities.”
