The Next Senate Meeting And Underlying Conditions Towards School Re-opening

Dear Peeps,

Be informed that the last Senate's meeting was held on Wednesday,July 30th,2014 and the next one would be held on Wednesday,24th September,2014.This is,in no doubt, subject to the drafted academic calendar for the current 2013/2014 Academic Session.

Meanwhile, all new dates, in consideration of the school's closure, shall be decided by the Directorate of Academic Affairs(DAA), Senate Division. Having decided on the new academic calendar, at a special meeting of the senate, the resolution would, thereafter, be forwarded to the stakeholders for receipt and acknowledgments accordingly.

More importantly, the decision of the stakeholders/management would, therefore, be communicated to the Federal Ministry of Education, which would in turn act on the school's re-opening on the school's management recommendation(s).

Conclusively, I have to make this clear to us that our resumption is not feasible in this month and in the early weeks of September. This is, now,the reason why I say "Yesterday is a cancelled cheque, tomorrow is a promissory note, today is the only cash you have, so spend it wisely."

Regards,
BENTIGOL OPEYEMI OJEWALE

Ogun Reduces School Fees in Tertiary Schools

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has approved an across the board reduction in all State owned Tertiary Institutions.
In the new school fees regime, some students will pay 61 percent less than they are currently paying while some others will be paying as low as N29,700. The reduction was arrived at after extensive deliberation between government, leadership of the various Students’ Unions and heads of the institutions.

Also, the new school fees regime has abolished the indigene/non-indigene dichotomy as all students offering the same course and the same level will pay the same fees.

In a statement signed by Barrister Segun Odubela, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, the government stated that medical students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) who are paying N301,610 will now be paying N176,596, a 41.4 percent reduction. Also, students of the Faculty of Arts in the same university will be paying N81,112 instead of the current fee of N126,540, a 35.9 percent reduction.
In Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, the school fees has been reduced from N71,300 to N40,000 for Higher National Diploma (HND) while Ordinary National Diploma (OND) students will enjoying a reduction of N22,300, a reduction of between 31.1 and 9.6 percent respectively.
Students of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) will enjoy a reduction from N103,435 for the first year students to N75,000, representing 27.5 percent reduction, while returning students who are paying N93,465 will now be paying N65,000, representing 30.4 percent reduction.
Higher National Diploma (HND) students of Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa who are currently paying N118,000 will now be paying N46,000, a reduction of 61 percent.

The reduction of fees will also apply to the other three (3) Institutes of Technology owned by the State Government.
The reduction of fees will take effect from the 2014/2015 academic session.

The State Government has also donated thirteen (13) buses to the Student Unions of all State and Federal Institutions in the State. Also to benefit from this largesse is the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun State Chapter.

Government further stated that it will always protect the interest of the students as they are future leaders of the Nation.

267th Inaugural Lecture

The University’s 267th Inaugural lecture:“Man Minus Machines Equals A Labourer” by Prof. Lawson Olabosipo Adekoya, holds on Tuesday, 26th August, 2014 at the Oduduwa Hall, by 5:00pm.

Professor Lawson Olabosipo Adekoya is a professor of Mechanical Engineering, OAU.

Students' Union Meeting With Management Ends Inconclusive

FROM THE LEADERSHIP OF THE UNION(As at Tuesday,12th August,2014)

Today, 12th August, 2014, the leadership of NANS Zone D led by Comrade Sunday Asefon(Zone D Coordinator) and Comr Momodu Daniel(NANS National Secretary) met with the Dean, Division of Students Affairs(DSA) to discuss all issues relating to the struggle earlier today. The weight of matters raised necessitated another meeting with the Vice Chancellor who was represented by Prof. Abayomi Salami, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, including the leadership of the Students' Union, some honourables of SRC, representatives of the ACJ and some faculty presidents.

At the meeting the following demands were made:
• Immediate re-opening of the University
• Review of the fees
• Implementation of instalmental payment
• Introduction of work-study and scholarship for indigent students
• Non-implementation of late registration penalty
• Non-victimization
• Mobilization of final year students for NYSC in November this year.

The DVC Academics in response to the above demands first highlighted the discomfort of the University with the closure stating that it is not of benefit to either the management or the students. He however assured the meeting of the management's commitment to quick and soonest resumption but said he cannot at that moment state a particular date as this is an exclusive duty of the senate. Without leaving out the main issue that led to the closure of the varsity which is increment in fees, the DVC is ready to reduce and assured that the Senate will consider the review of the fees and subsequently communicate its decision in earnest stating that he cannot for now announce any figure.

On the implementation of instalmental payment, the DVC said there is consideration for that especially for some persons that may be found in extreme situations/cases. He also said the senate Relief Committee has presented its report to the Senate and that all plans & logistics to implement the work-study and scholarship for indigent students will be set to work.

He further promised to present the demand of NANS that late registration be addressed only after the University has been reopened to the Senate for the review of the session calendar.

The DVC did not fail to address the issue of timely mobilization of students for the NYSC programme by informing the meeting that the DSA, the Committee of Deans and his office have started putting up plans to ensure that the senate approves all final year results and they are mobilized for NYSC come November 2014.

The last issue addressed by the meeting was that of non-victimization of student-leaders and all other students as NANS zone D pleaded that the Management should avoid any planned victimization against any students involved in the protest as this will be an infringement on the rights of students to protest.

Greatest IFE! We remain committed to quick resumption of students back to the University and holistic resolution of all lingering matters. All available opportunities and options available to ensure these will be further utilized as all third party mediators have been kept abreast of the result of the meeting...La lucha sigue!

Signed
