Angola Hall Warden And Excos Clash Over DSTV Subscription

The TV Sets in the common room of the Angola Hall have gone on vacation for the past few days as the monthly subscription for the DSTV remains unpaid.

According to a Release by the Hall Warden, Mr Femi Kuku, on the 7th March, 2016, he claimed that the University had paid N14,000 for the first year's subscription and according to an agreement with the 2013/2014 Ibiyemi-led administration, the Executives were now responsible for the bill. He admonished the Executives to pay the bills from the N200 collected from the inhabitants of the Hall upon resumption and even further alleged the Hall Executive Council was owing the Hall a sum of N12,000 for the replacement of the Decoder.

Responding to this via same mode, the Chairman of the Hall, Adebayo Oluwatobi a.k.a Ekiti claimed that the damaged decoder had been faulty since before the onset of his administration and even though efforts had been made to repair it. He said he had spoken with the hall warden to cut it off to avoid the payment for service they did not enjoy. He further stated that on the debt of the replaced decoder that reverse was the case as even though the hall had asked for a loan for the replacement, the management eventually disbursed the funds for the decoder in time and hence, there was and still exists no need for the Hall Executive Council to release any fund again.

Ekiti further alleged that the Hall Warden had not even paid the HEC the 40% of the Hall's IGR, which he put at N114,000 was supposed to be used for the Hall Week.

As at the time of filing this report, efforts are still in place to reach both parties to get more details on the issue. However till the issue is resolved, the stale freshmen of Angola will continue to stare at empty screens in their common room.

OAU Dramatic Art Students Disrupt Event At Pit Theartre Again

In Obafemi Awolowo University, learning and culture is our general slogan but it is disappointing that recent happening regarding Dramatic Arts students is not looking that way as some of the students of this department threw caution to the wind.

I witnessed an event today and the conduct of these students has left  me thinking loud. In a venue where people have to pay to hold events, should they be subjected to embarrassment by students of the department? It was another disappointing display by these students at the 45th Anniversary of the Association of Campus Journalists as they showed lots of characters that depicted OAU in bad image, for an event that had scholars present. It was a big embarrassment as these students said "it is our department and we own the venue even after the venue has been paid for".

The students of this department led by one Femi  unapologetically disrupted the event today and kept on causing disturbance with their music and drums at the venue even when guests from all over the country were seated in the course of the programme. In spite of several appeal to these students for consideration and understanding, they did not stop their action but threatened to beat legal occupants of the venue leaving questions of 'where is the so much cherished culture and learning championed by the institution?' on my lips.

The deed has been done for today but my major concern is that even if these students are claiming they are practicing for examination, must it cause huge embarrassment to people who paid to use Pit Theatre? If the Department of Dramatic Arts feels her student will be in dire need of the venue (Pit Theatre) at a time like this, then it should be stated that it is not available but in a case like today that students of the department disrupted events and cause much havoc to extent of drawing Guests attention to such anomaly, then it is a slap on the department.

It is high time the Head of Department called these students to order as this is not the first, second or even third time this kind of thing will be happening at Pit Theartre. People cannot be constantly disgraced by students from this department and so much efforts put in place will almost be ruined due to their believe that they are students of the department and can trample on rights.

We implore the Head of Department to use his good office to address this deteriorating practice.

NASS OAU: Election Petition Tribunal Revalidates ATOM As President-elect

The Departmental Representative Council (DRC) of the Nigerian Association of Science Students (NASS), Obafemi Awolowo University has revalidated Olasunkanmi Elisha Olaoye a.k.a Atom as the genuinely elected president of the Association having polled the highest number of votes.

The Faculty of Science students' Association conducted her poll a fortnight ago where Olasukanmi Elisha a.k.a Atom was eventually announced winner having polled slightly higher votes against what was recorded by Ogunyonye John and Akoledowo Eniola a.k.a DaCaptain his co-aspirants.

One of the contestants, who is also the runner up, John obviously not satisfied with the election result last week petitioned the Electoral Commission over the number of void votes recorded for him and requested that the votes be recounted.

On conveying the parliamentary sitting, the honourables who were aggrieved over the unconstitutional step taken by John to seek for clarity on the election expressed their disapproval. John had earlier written to the Dean of the Faculty requesting for his intervention in the matter. Eventually, majority of the honourables following a voting process decided that the votes be recounted.

Following the recount, the integrity of the Odu Oluwafemi Daniel-led Electoral Commission was further strengthened as the petitioner still lost the election about same margin with what was earlier announced. The Tribunal however upheld the initial declaration of the Electoral Commission thereby revalidating Atom as the dully elected president of NASS.

Reacting to the development, the petitioner expressed satisfaction as he declared contentment with the result. In his own reaction, the President-elect, Atom thanked everyone and said he is glad this came up which he sees as a confirmation of the mandate given him by the members of the Association.

The new executives are expected to be sworn-in by the Speaker of the Departmental Representative Council (DRC) after he must have been sworn-in by the Dean come next semester.

ACJ OAU Gets New Set Of Leaders

Mr Olanrewaju Oyedeji (a.k.a Larrysam) has emerged as the newly elected President of the Association of Campus Journalists, Obafemi  Awolowo University Chapter.

The recently held general elections of the Association, which took place at its Fajuyi Hall Secretariat produced LARRYSAM as the winner of the Presidency category - the only category contested by more than a candidate.  LARRYSAM, who is the immediate past Chairman of the Guild of Editors ACJ-OAU defeated his only opponent – Mr Omole Isaac (a.k.a O’ZIK), who is the immediate past Public Relations Officer of the Association, by a margin of fourteen (14) votes.

The elections also produced winners into other Executive positions of the Association.

The Electoral Committee chairman – Mr Akinbode Toluleke, while asserting the freeness and fairness of the elections, congratulated all newly elected members and also saluted the courage of those who lost out.  He also thanked the Electoral Committee members for a job well done.

Bloggers, Social Media Experts Condemn Shiite Extremism

A cross section of security experts and bloggers led by Jude Feranmi under the auspices of Nigerians Unite Against Terrorism at the launch of National awareness campaign against threat to Nigerias sovereignty (#NoToShiiteExtremism) held in Lagos yesterday.

A group, Nigerians Unite Against Terrorism has launched a hash tag #NoToShiiteExtremism to discourage extremism in the country. The National Coordinator of the group, Jude Feranmi, led other members of the group to launch the campaign. The organisation is birthed to ensure that as civilians, there is massive awareness against organised crimes against humanity, to ensure creation of a secured Nigeria that is not at the mercy of criminals and also to forestall every group of person that do not respect the sanctity of life.

Jude Feranmi said Nigerians must unite to defeat any form of extremism in the country, saying that experiences from the Boko Haram sect is a revelation of how extremism breeds violence.

He explained that the launch underscores the essence of Nigeria's unity and its supremacy over every form of terrorism stressing that as the war against Boko Haram insurgents is being won in the north east of the country, the consciousness Nigerians must be awaken to every form of extremism that might crop up again as opposed to 2009 when lack of vigilance allowed terrorism to gain roots in the North East of the country.

He said #NoToShiiteExtremism is a movement with a campaign to proactively act in manners that ensure extremism is no longer allowed to grow into full blown terrorism in our country.

"The campaign is driven by social media activists, bloggers and other well meaning Nigerians that are committed to a safe and united country. In addition to what we are doing today we have resolved to launch street rallies in other major cities against threats of terrorism to our country in the pursuit of our determination that Nigeria remains peaceful.

"We cannot afford to be insensitive to the emerging threats of extremism from the Islamic Movement of Nigeria which also goes by the name of Shiite Sect. We strongly believe that this should not be dismissed as an issue for the army alone to handle. The Federal Government needs to act NOW" The Group affirmed.

ACJ OAU: Larrysam, O'zik Head To Poll

If there are two names that took the Obafemi Awolowo University campus by storm within the last few hours, one is tempted not to go beyond Oyedeji Olanrewaju a.k.a Larrysam and Omole Isaac a.k.a O'zik; these personalities are contesting for the post of the President of the Association of Campus Journalists, OAU.

These two are arguably experienced campus journalists who even write for press outfits outside OAU. Larrysam and O'zik were forced to resign from the offices they occupy some hours before now owning to the set guideline of the Electoral Committee that mandated the resignature of any exco of ACJ with ambition in the poll. However, before this time, Olanrewaju Oyedeji was the Chairman, Guild of Editors, ACJ OAU while Omole Isaac was the Public Relations Officer of ACJ OAU.

Before this time, it will be recalled that the two engaged in a media face-off that almost polarized the campus pen pushers and even attracted criticisms from ordinary students of OAU. Was the face-off motivated by their ambition? A question no one has accurately provided an answer to.

In the mean time, these two and other aspirants for other positions head to the poll that will be decided strictly by recognized and registered ACJ OAU members tomorrow.
