OAU Staylites Anticipate Hostel Balloting Amid Accommodation Concerns

 By Ojelade Pipeloluwa

As Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, prepares for its hostel balloting scheduled for 6 p.m. today, October 27, staylites have expressed varying expectations about securing accommodation for the academic session.

While some students are optimistic about securing bed spaces, others have expressed concerns about their chances, the fairness of the allocation process and the cost of alternative accommodation. Meanwhile, some students say they do not intend to participate because they have other accommodation arrangements.

Semiat Jolaoso, a 200-level student in the Department of History expressed optimism ahead of the exercise, saying securing a hostel space would make accommodation arrangements easier for the academic session.

"I am looking forward to the balloting because I would really like to get a hostel space. Staying on campus would make things easier for me, especially when it comes to attending lectures and other academic activities," she said.

However, Precious Oseni, a student in the Department of Political Science expressed concern about the uncertainty surrounding the allocation process and the possibility of not securing a bed space.

"I am hoping to get a space, but I am also concerned about my chances. If I don't get one, I may have to look for accommodation outside the school, and that could mean additional expenses," she said.

Taiwo oyebanji,  a 300-level student, raised questions about the fairness and efficiency of the balloting process, emphasising the importance of transparency in allocating available spaces.

"I just hope the process is fair and works properly. Students who are eligible should have a fair opportunity to secure accommodation without unnecessary difficulties," he said.

Meanwhile, a 400-level student in the Department of Botany explained that having alternative accommodation had influenced the decision not to seek a hostel space.

"I don't think I will participate in the balloting because I already have other accommodation arrangements. I would rather leave the available spaces for students who need to stay on campus," the student said.

The differing perspectives reflect the varying accommodation needs and expectations of students ahead of the exercise, with securing a bed space remaining a priority for those seeking to live within the university community.

As the balloting approaches, students await the exercise, with their individual circumstances shaping their accommodation plans for the academic session.
