OAU Vice Chancellor Speaks On The Five Arrested Students

By Farombi Oluwaseun

The Vice Chancellor Of Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede has finally reacted to the case of the five OAU students remanded in prison for alleged assault of Moremi Hall Warden.

In a telephone conversation with the Vice Chancellor, he said the students were arraigned by the police and not the university. He added that the male students were found at Moremi hall, a female hostel in the morning around 10am of which they should not be there, let alone assaulting the hall warden. He further added that the university is trying renovate hostels but it"s being opposed by some criminals.

Speaking further on their residence at Kosere prison, he said that the Judge did not ask the students to pay the sum of N500,000.

In his words, he said” why will a judge tell a student to bring N500, 000 each in order to secure their bail? All what they asked for was a level 11 grade officer and I think that is not hard enough to get”

“The school would not produce students who are not ready to obey the laws of the institution.  We did not arrest them but the Police did and they should be accountable for themselves while the school management would be accountable for everybody but as the management we are only accountable to responsible students,” he said.

“If they are remorseful we would make sure they are released but we don’t want a situation whereby they would be released, they will now start beating up everybody and cause chaos in the school environment because they have done it before,” he added.

However,Speaking with the Chief Security Officer Of Great Ife Students Union, Olanrewaju Opeyemi(Oprah), He said they aee already done with the release of three students out of the five arrested as they have secured sureties for them remaining the magistrate Court to append their signatures so as secure their release..He also assured that all hands are on deck to make sure all the five arrested are released as soon as possible.
