It was a great day in Ile-Ife on Saturday, July 29, 2017 as participants from all around the country gathered to discuss, learn and network at the OpenCon Ife 2017. The event which was held on the Obafemi Awolowo University campus had a lot of attendants from outside Ile-ife and was hosted by Tiamiyu Barakat.

The event which is a satellite event of the OpenCon international was staged to focus on three areas which are; Open Access, Open Education and Open Data. Speakers and professionals from the field of OpenData spoke on how students in Nigeria Tertiary institutions can gain access to data relevant to their research work for free.

One of the keynote speakers and a lecturer in Obafemi Awolowo University, Dr. Oluwole Daramola stressed the need for the presence of open access outlets around the world, which in turn will help students to conduct quality research works and disseminate cutting edge approaches to solving world problems. In his own words, Mr Oludotun Babayemi cofounder of "Follow-the-money" explained that people can always win with data and use it to solve problems which his organization has been doing since it was founded. Participants were also able to learn more about the Wikimedia foundation.

According to President, Wikimedia Foundation Nigeria, Mr Olaniyan, the vision of the foundation is to have a world in which every single human being can freely share in sum of all knowledge. The event also featured interactive sessions, trainings and exposure on open data and open street mapping training which gave the participants lots of opportunities.
