Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, who have started to resume back to school following the end of the yuletide holidays, are currently lamenting the closure of majority of the butteries in the Halls of Residence.
Many have associated the closure of these butteries with a circular released last semester by the Security Unit banning the operation of butteries in the Halls of Residence. However, upon several visits to the various Halls of Residence, some of our correspondents were able to gather that the closure might not be not be as directly related with the Circular. For instance, in some Halls where the butteries are totally closed down, porters have claimed that it is only a temporary arrangement as they would be reopened in due course. However, in the Mozambique Hall of Residence, only one of the two butteries in the hall were operational and some workers in the hall claimed that the buttery attendants were only required to obtain a form to continue their operations and were not banned per say. However, this remains unconfirmed as at the time of compiling this report. There were also whispers that the management had plans to monopolise the buttery operations in the hall.
In most male Halls of Residence, the case is quite different as most of the buttery operators and artisans are closed up, leaving the residents of the hall to have to walk considerable distances out of the hall to purchase daily needs. Efforts are also being put in place to reach the welfare officer of the Students’ Union Electoral Commission for more details on the current situation.
